In this episode of The Compendium, we unravel the twisted tale of Michael Alig: The Club Kid King Who Killed for Fame. At the height of New York nightlife, Alig built an empire of excess, flamboyance, and infamy, transforming the Limelight nightclub into a hedonistic playground where anything—and everything—was possible. But behind the glitter and glamour lurked a dark undercurrent of drug-fueled chaos, manipulation, and ultimately, murder. We dive deep into the rise and fall of Michael Alig and the Club Kids, the role of Peter Gatien, the shocking Angel Melendez murder, and how a scene built on rebellion spiraled into true crime history. From the neon-drenched dance floors of the 1990s to the gritty reality of New York crime stories, this is the cautionary tale of a subculture that burned too bright—and paid the ultimate price. Multiply that by ten, throw in every drug known to NYC in the ‘80s and ‘90s and you've got an average Wednesday night for Michael Alig. This week on the show, we discuss the infamous case of Michael Alig, the 90's NYC club promoter known for his flamboyant pageantry and prankish antics that eventually murdered one of his friends, chopped them up in a bathtub and dumbed them in the Hudson River. Not only that, but it all quickly escalated into a full-on media circus as police failed to investigate, rumors ran rampant in the clubs and newspapers, and Alig himself joked about murdering Angel Melendez in public and in interviews. And this was all while Alig was hanging out with legendary icons like Ru Paul, and other zany characters like "James St. James", "Jenny Talia", and "Waltpaper". As grisly and flashy as this case simultaneously was, it's little wonder it was turned into a movie released in 2003 entitled "Party Monster", starring Macaulay Culkin and Seth Green (and receiving pretty bad reviews overall.) Dressing up in a punkish, sometimes-androgynous aesthetic in the vein of David Bowie, Boy George, Lady Gaga, or the aforementioned Ru Paul, this brash and artistic youth movement of the "Club Kids" began as a jabby satire of the club scene that artist Andy Warhol had produced, but quickly became its own cliche. What began as a vibrant and mostly-positive NYC club scene of alt-kids -- self-proclaimed "Freaks" that were minorities of all kinds (particularly of the LGBTQ+ variety) -- that weren't even doing drugs, eventually descended into an absolute drug-fueled rampage-of-sorts through the NY club scene that led to murder, hubris, blood-soaked club parties, lots of drugs, and a whole lot of regret for a lot of people. This story is absolutely bonkers on every level: to the incubation of a unique sub-culture, to the mind of a deeply flawed and troubled misfit murderer, the circus-like club antics, the proto-LGBTQ+ history, and the absolute abject failure of the NYPD to bring proper justice to the situation in due time. Hopefully you dig it! This week's featured music: don't forget to support that black hoodie rap and all your favorite independent artists! Red Tops - Rothstein Another Saturday Night - M.U.T.T. Gia and our hosts discuss the art of collecting vinyl records, how her love for salsa came to be as a kid living in Hong Kong and her mission to bring forgotten music from the 70s and 80s to the younger generations. During the pandemic Gia teamed up with producer, Angel Meléndez, to create one of the most talked about salsa albums of 2021. Get your favorite dancing shoes ready and tune in to this fun episode of The Accutron Show.Episode Highlights5:07 My fascination with salsa music started in Hong Kong when I was 15. I had been dancing since very little. One day I went to see a dance competition with my friends and some of the dance teams used salsa music. We were so mesmerized because even though we didn't know the lyrics, everyone was taken by the beat. In that moment I realized the power of music that can bring together people with many different backgrounds.18:12 During the pandemic I was looking for a song, I had been looking for it for months. I sent it to my mentor who is based in Chicago and it turned out that he was friends with the artist, Angel Melendez. So I met him over Zoom and spoke about my passion for old salsa music. The conversation led to having him propose to do a record together.26:00 We initially started with two songs only which were very well received from the community, we ended up recording an album. We first released it on CD, but today people are buying more and more records so we pressed on vinyl.Learn more about the Accutron watch here, and follow @AccutronWatch:InstagramTwitterFacebookSubscribe to this podcast on Apple Podcasts and Spotify to hear new episodes as soon as they're released.Follow our hosts on social media:Bill McCuddy: Facebook  / TwitterDavid Graver: Instagram  / TwitterGia Fu: Instagram

Michael Musto steps Behind The Rope. Michael chats about the full trajectory of his career none the least of which was his ahead of its time legendary Village Voice column which included dish, tabloid fodder, celeb accolades and interviews with anyone who was and is everyone. Michael breaks down the process of “outing” Gay Hollywood, the hate he received for it over the years, Rosie, Ellen, Jodie Foster, where Hollywood is today on the subject, the obvious celebs who are still in the closet - oh hey there Missy Elliott and Queen Latifah and why and just who may be slipping under our radar. Did we mention, tabloid fodder? Michael also breaks down his ahead of its time blind item, how he was not only the original blogger but also an ahead of his time influencer who picked some of today's A list names out of obscurity and what he thinks of today's social media culture, famous for being famous, reality tv (did someone say Real Housewives and Kardashians) and the Queen or King of blind items, Deux Moi. Michael also opens up about how one of his blind items led to the investigation and ultimate arrest of now infamous club kid Michael Alig for the death and dismemberment of Angel Melendez. Michael discusses which celebs were the nicest, rudest, most upset at his hold nothing back snarky opinion in print and what current day celeb scandals keep him up at night. As all roads often do, Michael deep dives Madonna - how she, then unknown, prevented him from sound checking with his band, how he predicted she will “never amount to anything” - a statement which still gets him screamed at by M fans globally, Madonna's current social media behavior and whether she is “trying too hard” or once again is just ahead of us all. Finally, we chat about how his friend Andy Warhol would approve of Andy Cohen being deemed the modern day Andy Warhol, how he would have wanted to appear on RHONY and be spending his days doing portraits of our good friend, Countess Luann!! @musto184 @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef BONUS & AD FREE EPISODES Available at - www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope BROUGHT TO YOU BY: LULULEMON - lululemon.com (This Holiday Season Shop The Best Gifts at Lululemon) TALKSPACE - talkspace.com/velvet ($100 Off Your First Month) RAKUTEN - rakuten.com (Or Get The Rakuten App to Start Earning Cash Back Today When You Shop Over 3,500 Stores!) Michael Alig, or you may know him better as Party Monster, was crowned king of the Club Kids back in the late 80's/early 90's. You may have heard of the club kids, some famous examples today are Bjork, Amanda Lepore, and Ru Paul. They ruled the streets of Manhattan when the streetlights came on and partied the night away. Michael would throw these elaborate parties with crazy performers, wild themes and loads of drugs but it wouldn't take long for the Club Kid scene to come crashing down to the ground. By the end two club kids would become murderers and one of their own, Angel Melendez would be the one killed.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

We're back with a packed episode! Also, our bff EDIE is back on the pod today, woohoo! We start out in New York City 1996 with Kevin's True Crime Story. He tells us all about the tragic killing of Angel Melendez, one of the iconic Club Kids of the New York party scene. Before this gruesome death, The Club Kids were a brash, in-your-face, fabulous, party machine full of misfits, weirdos, and queers, including RuPaul, James St. James, Angel Melendez, Amanda Lepore and Lady Bunny. Anyone else who didn't fit in during the daytime was invited to the party. Unfortunately, drugs, an excess of debauchery, and Rudy Giuliani led to the downfall of queer nightlife. But the gruesome killing of Angel by Club Kid impresario Michael Alig and his friend Freeze Riggs shocked everyone. It's not for the faint of heart. Then, for the Spoopy Story, Miss takes us to 1848 Hydesville, NY to tell us about the Fox Sisters and their spiritualist abilities. Well, they weren't so much 'abilities' as scams, but for a long while, they made their money. Source notes found at www.creepyinqueeriespod.com. Follow us on Instagram @CreepyInQueeriesPod. As the drug use got heavier, coupled with hard drugs, possible personality disorders, and/or mental illnesses, things got dark really fast.Podcast Promo: Cherishing ChildhoodSOURCES:https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/26/style/michael-alig-dead.htmlhttps://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jun/21/michael-alig-interviewhttps://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/02/style/peter-gatien-limelight-tunnel-club-kid.htmlhttps://forever80sblog.com/2017/06/28/club-kid-gitsie-what-happened/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Alighttps://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/peter-gatien-club-king-new-york-nightlife-976251/https://morbidnmacabre.com/2020/01/19/michael-alig-the-killer-club-kid/https://pleasekillme.com/limelight-nyc-nightlife-90s/https://uinterview.com/news/peter-gatien-on-michael-aligs-murder-of-angel-melendez-he-was-the-last-person-i-thought-could-commit-murder/https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-news/michael-alig-dead-club-kid-party-monster-1107737/https://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/nyc-crime/ny-michael-alig-dies-heroin-overdose-20201225-ndj3zbezgndtzg4qycljballoi-story.htmlhttps://www.thedailybeast.com/the-michael-alig-i-knew-club-kid-killer-and-mysteryhttps://pagesix.com/2021/01/04/club-kid-killer-michael-alig-thought-death-was-near/https://www.vanityfair.com/style/2021/01/michael-alig-club-kid-ashes-fight-indiana-green-wood-cemetaryhttps://www.thecut.com/article/michael-alig-2006-new-york-profile.htmlhttps://www.villagevoice.com/2020/12/28/the-devil-and-michael-alig/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Club_Kidshttps://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4851054/Where-New-York-s-Club-Kids-80s-90s-now.htmlhttps://filmdaily.co/news/michael-alig-pictures/https://forever80sblog.com/2017/06/13/what-happened-to-robert-freeze-riggs/https://expressdigest.com/where-are-new-yorks-club-kids-of-the-80s-and-90s-now/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Riggshttps://www.thesmokinggun.com/file/club-kids-kill-angelhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andre_Melendezhttps://murderpedia.org/male.A/a/alig-michael.htmhttps://torontosun.com/news/world/hunter-club-kid-killer-michael-aligs-fab-life-and-gruesome-deathhttps://newyork.cbslocal.com/2015/06/19/club-kid-michael-alig/https://www.grunge.com/305919/the-messed-up-true-story-behind-party-monster/https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-030-41909-7_7https://granvarones.com/angel-melendez/https://newyork.cbslocal.com/tag/angel-melendez/https://www.nytimes.com/1996/12/07/nyregion/police-give-details-in-killing-of-flamboyant-club-denizen.htmlhttps://gothamist.com/news/party-monster-michael-alig-describes-killing-angel-melendezhttps://gothamist.com/tags/angel-melendezhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DJ_Keokihttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_St._Jameshttps://www.vice.com/en/article/mgm8vy/party-monster-james-st-james-looks-back-on-drugs-murder-and-dancehttps://www.laweekly.com/superstar-dj-keoki-arrested-after-man-fatally-overdosed-in-his-nyc-apartment/https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/michael-alig-did-his-time-for-murder-now-he-wants-to-party-111586/

It makes sense to me that Michael Alig, the notorious Party Monster, King of the Club Kids has passed away on Christmas. When I woke up to this news a million different feelings washed over my body...but mostly it was deep sadness. Addiction is a thing that claims lives every second and something that has blackened many parts of my life. Goodbye MIchael. I will never forget you. This is a re-post of a live show I did with him in 2017.  I met Michael shortly after he was released from Prison for his 1996 murder of Angel Melendez. For some background, this is the same man whose life that the 2003 movie Party Monster  was based off of. He was a brilliant Pied Piper who was able to create a social movement that swept over the nation calling small town rejects and societal misfits to join he's legion of worshipers called the "Club Kids." Reviled by some, worshiped by others, he's like the trump of 90's. As someone who intimately knows the New York Party scene, let me tell you the kind of charisma and raw unique creative chutzpah this takes. It can only happen with a brilliant, ruthless visionary with a calculator brain. Every single person I know whose above 35 got their party flippers wet at Limelight, or Tunnel. HE wasn't a to start monster, he was a God, for years. Then he fell, like Icarus, into the abyss not be be seen or heard for 17 years. He was in solitary confinement for years, and managed to stay on heroin, due to the prison guards slipping him heroin into his sell with his food.  So in 2017, I was able to host a live show at the Marcy North and interview him about his life, speak with his family and friends, and provide some light into what a world soaked in heroin and solitary confinement would be like. We spoke endlessly, about life, prison, addiction, redemption, his art, he's dreams and his nightmares.  Michael is a rainbow of colors. He has a kind of brutal honesty through his humor that can be sharp and cutting, while being dull and blunt. He reminded me constantly of the Cheshire cat from Alice and Wonderland, both hands pointed in opposite directions whenever I would try to ask him about difficult subjects. We are all chasing a different white rabbit that is represented in our different addictions, whether helpful or harmful. We are all playing hide and seek with the ultimately elusive meta concept of "happiness." We are all constantly scraping up and crashing against each other, harming ourselves and others to varying degrees. The question becomes not if we will harm others it's merely when? Subsequently, how can you ever atone, when the repercussions of your mistakes leave lasting scars on the ones your love, your community, and the world. Furthermore what's really tricky is even if you’re absolved judicially, how do you forgive yourself? I don't claim to answer any of these questions. All i can do is ask them, and when I make mistakes try to put one foot in front of the other, find news ways to live my life, as my mother always says, with gentle loving kindness. Throughout this journey I kept two quotes in mind: From My Neck So Free The Albatross fell off, and Sank Like Lead Into The Sea Dorthy: OZ we're you frightened? Oz: Frightened? Child you're talking to a man who's laughed in the face of death, sneered at doom, and chuckled at catastrophe, I was petrified Thank you to Zev and Gadi for allowing me to do the live show at their beautiful Marcy North Hotel in Williamsburg. Thank you to David Herman, and Emily Brodtman who helped me weave this story together. Songs: Neil Diamond: Damage Done

Holly’s case is the mass shooting in a Florida nightclub, carried out by a terrible man called Omar Mateen. Gemma thanks Jared for suggesting her case, the murder of Angel Melendez by Michael Alig. Holly stressed out about how much Gemma’s recent illness effects her, Gemma claims youth as a reason to not know things and the girls laugh about an escape attempt, to a place only 1 hour away. Gemma edited this week, complaints sent to Producer Craig who will take them and shred them, he does love to shred things. Today we're delighted to bring legendary NYC nightclub performer (or club-kid) James St. James on the show to talk about his new book "Freak Show," a semi-fictional story about the struggles and triumphs of a fabulous gay teenager living in a conservative Southern town in Florida. I say semi-fictional because in many ways the story is loosely based on his own life experiences growing up gay."Freak Show" attempts to create a healthier atmosphere as he tells the story of Billy Bloom and his struggles to fit in at his High School and how he tries to get the class hunk. It may sound like a departure from his better known autobiographical novel "Disco Bloodbath" (later re-named "Party Monster") where he tells the dark and grim story on how NYC nightclub promoter/club-kid Michael Alig killed his drug dealer Angel Melendez. We're making a special announcement today. The word "reinventing" needs to be dis-invented. We're tired of seeing everyone everywhere "re-invent themselves" when they are really just putting on a new wig and going shopping at H&M. Save the word for when it means something, like "they just re-invented the combustion engine to run on hugs and kisses."Join Marc Felion and me, Fausto Fernós as we talk to James St. James about his book and his celebrity gossip. You’ll come to understand why. In hunting for another gay murderer for LGBTQIA+ Pride month, Stephanie came across an old familiar story and stumbled upon a fun new one. Her first true crime story is the murder of Angel Melendez by club kid party promoter, Michael Alig. What exactly happened between the two on the night of Melendez’s death is still unclear. How his body was disposed of, however, became very clear. But wait, there’s more! Stephanie has a second story about the infamous Philadelphia Poison Ring. Lead by two cousins in the late 1930’s, their gang amassed a large web of Italian immigrants in South Philadelphia. Insurance scams, counterfeit bills, and more mischief finally came to an end when the cops took their eye off of the pair’s petty crimes to discover their more insidious grand scheme.

Michael Alig, the beautiful party promoter who took took over NYC's party scene in the 90's has been released from Prison for his 1996 murder of Angel Melendez. For some background, this is the same man whose life that the 2003 movie Party Monster (Staring Seth Green and McCauley Caulkin) was based off of. He was a brilliant Pied Piper who was able to create a social movement that swept over the nation calling small town rejects and societal misfits to join he's legion of worshippers called the "Club Kids." Reviled by some, worshiped by others, he's like the trump of 90's. . As someone who itimately knows the New York Party scene, let me tell you the kind of charisma and raw unique creative chutzpah this takes happens with only a very brilliant, visionary with a calculator brain. Every single person I know whose above 35 got their party flippers wet at Limelight, or Tunnel. HE wasn't a monster, he was God, for years. Then he fell, like Icarus, into the abyss not be be seen or heard for 17 years. Well he's back, and we've been spending time together. He's been out of prison for two years he's off drugs, and ready to find way to pick up the humpty dumpty pieces of his life and try to hot glue them back together again but shockingly that hasn't been easy.... He was gracious enough to let me into his life, speak with his family and friends, and provide some light into what a world soaked in heroin and solitary confinement would be like. We spoke endlessly, about life, prison, addiction, redemption, his art, he's dreams and his nightmares. I realized what I was trying to do in speaking to him was take an issue that seemed black and white and show the prism of colors that surrounded it. Thank you Michael for sharing your story with me. Thank you to Jordan Reisman my trusty sound engineer Thank you to David Herman, and Emily Brodtman who helped me weave this story together. Songs: Neil Diamond: Damage Done Go to www.adamandevetoys.com and put in my name "Zoe" to get discounts and free shipping on any of their online store.
