Well, divas, today's episode is a much-needed herstory lesson. We have noticed an epidemic in the trans community as of late: the girls know who Natalie Mars is, but not Amanda Lepore, Mimi Marks, or April Ashley. We've brought trans herstory expert Victoria Alejandra on the pod today for a kiki and a lesson! Take notes, there will be a quiz later. And we don't even get to the main topic until 30 mins in. This is a longer-than-usual episode; Victoria will be back in the future to catch us up to the modern day. For 15 months after he was released from prison, Michael Alig, also known as the Party Monster, lived with David Maurici. Sour Candy & Chaos chronicles the crazy situations that swirled around Michael Alig during his post-prison return to New York City. This is the story of his new book; SOUR CANDY and CHAOS; My Life with the Party Monster - the aftermath of a True Crime. To watch on YouTubehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=przpvpS56qwMichael Alig was a notorious figure in the New York City nightlife scene of the late 1980s and early 1990s, known as the "King of the Club Kids." These Club Kids included Susanne Bartsch, Ernie Glam (David's husband and Michael's former flatmate), Amanda Lepore, and RuPaul, and created a movement that influenced fashion, art and popular culture. Alig's flamboyant personality and outrageous parties made him a central figure in the city's club culture, characterized by its extravagant costumes and hedonistic atmosphere. However, his fame took a dark turn in 1996 when he was convicted of the m-rder of fellow club kid Andre "Angel" Melendez. Alig and his roommate, Robert "Freeze" Riggs, k-ll-d Melendez in a brutal altercation fueled by drugs. The crime and its subsequent media coverage shocked the public, revealing a dark underside of the seemingly glamorous club scene. After serving 17 years in prison, Alig was released in 2014, but he struggled to reclaim his former notoriety and died of a h-r-in overdose in 2020. Hosted on Acast. Help! Far across the Alaskan sea, a plastic pangea encroaches on humanity. Luckily, there's a burlesque performer with plenty of resourcefulness and even more eyelash glue to elevate it into art. I chatted with Seattle's most effervescent outsider, The Luminous Pariah, about being the Bjork of Burlesque, the joys of lesbian acoustic rock, performing for the gays vs. performing for your peers, safety tips for biking with lashes, looking like trash and feeling fierce, serving salmon to the coastguard of Alaska, how the eyes are the windows to Jackie Beat, introducing interns to an advanced curriculum in rhinestoning, and why small town folks are not only less scary than you think, they might actually need you more than you can know. [REBROADCAST FROM September 15, 2022] As a photographer, David LaChapelle's images have defined pop culture since the 90's, whether through the classic image of Tupac in a bathtub, the official album cover for Travis Scott's Astroworld, or photos of models such as Amanda Lepore and Angelina Jolie. While he is known for his iconic celebrity portraits, his art also makes social commentary on capitalism and celebrity, sometimes described as "kitsch pop surrealism." The photographer's largest retrospective ever is now on view in a museum-wide exhibition at Fotografiska New York. LaChapelle joins us alongside Amanda Hajjar, founding director of exhibitions for Fotografiska, to discuss the show. The exhibition ends January 15.
We chat a bit about downtown NYC doyennes from our era, especially Amanda Lepore and her distinctive lewks. You have found your corner of the internet. As a former candy raver, I was all about PLUR - Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect so when I learned about the tragic murder of Angel Melendez at the hands of Micahel Alig, I was so upset and also so obsessed. Like how did this happen? Well, friends, the answer was easy, fame, power, and mental illness exacerbated by serious drug abuse. However, the club kid scene did have its highlights, mainly thanking the drag queen heavens for giving us all RuPaul, but other famous folks, including Lady Bunny, Amanda Lepore, James St. James, Superstar DJ Keoki, and Richie Rich. Michael Alig, or you may know him better as Party Monster, was crowned king of the Club Kids back in the late 80's/early 90's. You may have heard of the club kids, some famous examples today are Bjork, Amanda Lepore, and Ru Paul. They ruled the streets of Manhattan when the streetlights came on and partied the night away. Michael would throw these elaborate parties with crazy performers, wild themes and loads of drugs but it wouldn't take long for the Club Kid scene to come crashing down to the ground. By the end two club kids would become murderers and one of their own, Angel Melendez would be the one killed.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

We're back with a packed episode! Also, our bff EDIE is back on the pod today, woohoo! We start out in New York City 1996 with Kevin's True Crime Story. He tells us all about the tragic killing of Angel Melendez, one of the iconic Club Kids of the New York party scene. Before this gruesome death, The Club Kids were a brash, in-your-face, fabulous, party machine full of misfits, weirdos, and queers, including RuPaul, James St. James, Angel Melendez, Amanda Lepore and Lady Bunny. Anyone else who didn't fit in during the daytime was invited to the party. Unfortunately, drugs, an excess of debauchery, and Rudy Giuliani led to the downfall of queer nightlife. But the gruesome killing of Angel by Club Kid impresario Michael Alig and his friend Freeze Riggs shocked everyone. It's not for the faint of heart. Then, for the Spoopy Story, Miss takes us to 1848 Hydesville, NY to tell us about the Fox Sisters and their spiritualist abilities. Well, they weren't so much 'abilities' as scams, but for a long while, they made their money. Source notes found at www.creepyinqueeriespod.com. Follow us on Instagram @CreepyInQueeriesPod. We had the pleasure of interviewing Ariana and the Rose over Zoom video! Ariana and the Rose returns with “Every Body”, her first new music since pre-lockdown and the first glimmer of a sonic evolution steeped in personal perseverance and unbridled joy. In the past, Billboard has called Ariana and the Rose a “musical project specializing in lyrically sincere, sonically enveloping synth-pop”, and with “Every Body” she is fortifying her place in a pop world that desperately needs to dance again.Written and produced alongside longtime collaborator Andy Highmore (his credits include AlunaGeorge & The Knocks), “Every Body” uses its unrelenting beat and hypnotic soundscape to deliver a message of unity & inclusivity to the dance floor. The video (filmed at House of Yes in Brooklyn and directed by the Emmy-winning Jason Sherwood) conjures up pre-COVID memories of dancefloors, late night clubs, and freedom, finding Ariana and the Rose dancing amidst a crowd of nightlife & NYC/LA art world legends, in alphabetical order: Amanda Lepore, Bex, Cakes Da Killa, CT Hedden, The Dragon Sisters, Kandy Muse, Laith Ashley, Love Bailey, Madison Rose, Marizol, Merlot, Rhea Litre, Rify Royalty, Ryan Burke, Spencer Ludwig, Zero Waste DanielIn early spring 2020, Ariana had a whole album of songs ready to release throughout the summer - effervescent, hopeful and carefree. But when COVID-19 shook the world and sent us all inside, she found herself disconnected from the material and ended up scrapping all of it, not thinking it appropriate to celebrate amongst the pandemic and social unrest of the country. As quarantine continued, she started from scratch, writing, composing and recording the music she wanted to hear once the world opened up again and we could once again unite on the dancefloor. “Every Body” is the first taste. The release of “Every Body” follows recent skyrocketing success on TikTok, when a video of a piano-assisted spoken word piece she posted earned an astounding 8 million views on the social media platform in less than a week. The video gained extra exposure when it was shared by the likes of Betches (via Instagram), NYT best-selling author Meena Harris & Tony-nominated actress Laura Benanti. She will also hit the road with Torres this September & October, as well as take the stage at the Treefort Music Festival & Austin City Limits Live (full dates below & here). In the past, Ariana and the Rose has been called “a refreshing burst of authenticity” by LadyGunn, and she has earned acclaim from Consequence of Sound, Paper Magazine, Vice, Time Magazine, Refinery 29, LOGO, and more. She is also the curator of the immersive music and art party “light + space” which has had numerous events across Manhattan & Brooklyn (including a residency at House Of Yes), as well as one-off performances in LA and London. We want to hear from you!
New York City goddess Amanda Lepore joins Laura for a fun and candid conversation about her adventures and the glitz, glamour & grunge of the City in its prime.
In late March of 1996 a box containing the mutilated remains of an unidentified man washed up on the shores of Miller Field in Staten Island. Little did authorities know that this discovery was indelibly linked to the who's who of New York City Nightlife, and the king of the club kids himself, Michael Alig. Join WWBD as we take an ultra deep dive into the world in 1980's and 90's New York City night life. We trace the road to the concept of being famous for being famous and explore the rise of the elusive, colorful, living works of art and influence that were known simply as the club kids. This counter cultural phenomenon would change the landscape of art, music, and night life in a way no one knew was possible, and sadly, it culminated in one of the most shocking and grizzly murders of it's time. *There were a great many sources this week, most of which you can find below, but we will post more of the talk show appearances in our social media this week. It is our 26th episode of Drag Time with Heklina and it is all about Cazwell. Let's just say it. He's sexy and he is a rapper. Cazwell joins us from Los Angeles where we get the latest about his new YouTube series MOISTURIZING WITH THE EXTRATERRESTRIALS, all about a good skincare routine and, yes, stories of alien abduction. Cazwell even gives us a little lesson in oil cleansers, moisturizing, and Retin-A treatment. We asked Cazwell all about making the wildly popular videos for Cakes, All Over Your Face, Ice Cream Truck, and I love You. He tells us how he casts his videos and his favorite collaborators for clothing and costume. Speaking of fashion, we have an Amanda LePore update! Hear a little about the Cazwell process that goes into writing and recording with artist-collaborators such as Richie Beretta (Major Lazer, Jillionaire), Justin de Nobrega (Die Antwoord), Nicky da B (Diplo), Peaches, Jesse Novak (M.I.A., Santigold), Big Dipper, RedTop (Beyoncé, Goldfrapp), Manila Luzon, DJ Fresh Direct, to name a few. We're so glad you're tuning in! We love Cazwell! "Loose Wrists" song is featured with permission by Cazwell. The green-eyed monster takes center stage this week as Azealia Banks takes unnecessary potshots at Queen Bey, 45's itchy Twitter fingers strike again in a racist rant that reveals more about him than it does about the targets of his ire and Travis Scott (or Kanye maybe...) removes the legendary Amanda Lepore from the cover of Astroland due to less than clear motives. Então Tom conheceu Paula Ajala King e a convidou para gravar o single I Believe Again.

Her collaborations with merchandisers have found extraordinary success, including the best selling Time Tranny watch with Swatch, which remains the fastest selling limited edition Swatch watch; a set of three sold-out limited edition dolls with fashion designer Jason Wu (one of which is infused with the Amanda fragrance); and her most recent line of personalized CAMP Cosmetics entitled, The Lepore Collection. In December, Ms. Lepore released Amanda, her first fragrance, custom-designed by Christophe Laudamiel, an award-winning perfumer.
