Welcome to the first full episode of the new season of the People Impact Podcast! We are so excited to start taking this deep dive into exploring toxicity in the workplace.  We are even more excited to welcome our new co-host Ann Betz!! Please join us in welcoming Ann to the podcast and share your thoughts on this new episode in the comments below.  In this episode Ann and Lisa share their personal experiences with toxic workplaces and toxic leadership. We also discuss the impact of toxicity on individuals, organizations, and the NERVOUS SYSTEM.  Most importantly we dive into paradox of how toxicity has become so ubiquitous in the workplace, and the importance of unraveling and understanding it in roder to start reversing its impact. Understanding Toxicity and Toxic Traits Using Dr. Ramani's CRAVED model we explain the constellation of traits associated with toxic behavior. One of the most difficult things in dealing with toxicity in the workplace is being able to discern what is actually toxic vs what is ”just an off day”. When you can better understand the constellation of the traits of toxicity you can better recognize the patterns of behavior that are having a toxic impact in the workplace. The Personality Trait vs Diagnosis We also highlight the significance of understanding toxic behavior as a constellation of personality traits, rather than a clinical diagnosis. It's easy to believe that what we're pointing at is a clinical diagnosis, but don't be fooled! What we are pointing to is actually much more subtel and insidious, and this is one of the many reasons why it's become to prevalent in modern workplaces. Toxicity doesn't need to be at a clinical level in order for it to be a problem and cause harm - to both you and your organization!  Impact on Workplace The presence of these toxic traits can lead to a negative impact on workplace dynamics, communication, and overall productivity. The impact and loss associated is huge - high turn over, quiet quitting, low motivation and engagement, and stagnation.  Addressing Toxic Behavior Some key strategies for recognizing and addressing toxic behavior: Creating Awareness: Educating employees about toxic behavior and its impact can create a more conscious and supportive work environment. Self-Reflection: Employees need time to reflect on their experiences and feelings in the workplace to identify any signs of toxic behavior. Open Communication: Encouraging communication and feedback to safe channels can help in identifying and addressing toxic behavior within the organization. But these feelings and experience must be taken seriously. We'll dive into more on this in a future episode.   Stay tuned for more insightful discussions on toxicity in the workplace and how to address these challenges effectively. Join us in the next episode as we delve deeper into the impact of toxic behavior on organizational culture and strategies for creating a more positive work environment. A certified professional coach with more than twenty years in the industry, a published author and poet, and a researcher, Ann integrates her passion for the brain and consciousness with her interest in spirituality. Clients and students alike laud her for making the complexities of the brain come to life with depth, humor, and clarity. In our recent interview Ann describes how to identify a work environment that lacks psychological safety. She says, “What is the pattern? The pattern will tell you a lot, and then your body will tell you a lot. But you've got to map it to the pattern.” Ann talks about the negative impact of a psychologically unsafe work environment on performance. She says, “We're not designed to think carefully when we're in a fight-or-flight and/or freeze situation. We're designed to move. We're designed to do what is necessary to survive. So, by design, our brains get blocked a bit so that we can do what's critically necessary for survival and not higher-level thinking. You lose the ability to think abstractly, and so you get less creativity. You get less empathic. You get less of the ability to make good decisions. That's the brain impact. In the body, you're draining your adrenal glands. Cortisol is shutting down your immune function. There are all sorts of things like that that basically say you're making yourself sick. And so, in organizations that have a high level of stress and a toxic culture what you will find is 1) more absenteeism, 2) more presenteeism—because when people can't think they don't work as effectively—and 3) higher healthcare costs.” Ann describes how to identify narcissistic behaviors by using the acronym CRAVED. She says that one way to assess if someone has those characteristics is by asking yourself the following questions: “Are they typically and habitually (C)onflictual. Are they (R)igid? Are they (A)ntagonistic? Do they pick fights? Are they (V)indictive? Do they act like a victim? Are they (E)ntitled? Are they (D)ysregulated? So, can they not regulate their own emotions?”Ann closes by giving us one way to positively impact a work culture. She says, “Really celebrate the integrated leader. Celebrate the leader that understands both how to get results, but also how to care for their people and really celebrate both and really keep focusing on that.” To learn more about Mindful Warrior and Mindful Warrior Radio please follow us on Instagram @therealmindfulwarrior and check out our website at www.mindfulwarrior.com

Ann Betz is an expert on evidence-based neuroscience, human development and coaching, and she's here to talk about toxic workplace culture and toxic personalities. On the one hand, when coaches work with a coachee sitting in front of us, we focus on that person and what they want do differently in their lives. On the other hand, sometimes people are in systems where it is not up to them at all to get better at something, it's the situation and work relationships that are toxic. Being in a toxic environment can be like having someone smoking next to you: the solution is not to have a more patient, constructive, zen perspective about the smoke. You really just want to get rid of the smoke. Toxicity often comes from someone with power in the organisation, with toxic traits and behaviours that are unregulated. Ann states that, in toxic workplaces, we tend to overlook that some people will not change. They will continue going from organisation to organisation, from role to role within an organisation, creating mental and physical health issues in their wake. Toxic people rise to certain levels. A part of it is because so much of what we believe leadership to be has been rooted in very toxic behaviours. Another part is that these people want to get to that level, badly. We need to address this more and get rid of the smoker, rather than offering air filters, or face masks. The great myth is that these toxic people are so valuable to the organisation that their bad behaviour is excused. What gets overlooked, Ann notices, is the value that gets destroyed because people are yelled at, shut down, creativity is gone. For the individual, the best solution is often to leave and find another job. “I think, what was lost?” Regulation is an important factor, and for that it is essential to spot the difference between a person who is having a bad day and someone who genuinely lacks self-regulation and self-awareness. Someone who isn't going to change. The distinction is in seeing patterns. Ann shares clear patterns and red flags to consider, from the ‘fauxpology' to ‘this is just who I am' and even the ‘poor me'. She elaborates on the CRAVED model (developed by Dr Ramani Durvasula) for patterns of behaviour. And she recommends effective actions to take when you encounter highly powerful toxic people. Do share this information, widely. It helps. Learn the ways to discern – and of flipping the script on someone who is genuinely toxic. Then we have the opportunity to say: “The buck stops here.” More about Ann Betz: LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/ann-betz-a6b31018/ But Now I Know Your Name Ann's blog about narcissism, neuroscience, and the transformative power of knowledge https://butnowiknowyourname.wordpress.com/https://butnowiknowyourname.wordpress.com/ BeAbove Leadership https://www.beaboveleadership.com/faculty-and-staff/ Ann's blog on the brain https://yourcoachingbrain.wordpress.com/https://yourcoachingbrain.wordpress.com/ More about us: Lisa Dempsey – https://www.linkedin.com/in/lisakdempsey/ and https://www.leadershiplabs.eu Marjolijn Vlug – https://www.linkedin.com/in/marjolijnvlug/ and https://www.marjolijnvlug.nl Reach us both at PeopleImpactPodcast@gmail.com

Ann has been an early adopter of neuroscience in the coaching industry since 2010, so Coaching.com CEO Alex Pascal takes this opportunity to find out how she believes this knowledge can be best used to enhance the profession. In this conversation, Ann explains why she believes neuroscience has an expansionist effect on her coaching practice. She provides examples of how it has brought inspiration to her work and opened up new creative opportunities. One of the concerns coaches have about integrating neuroscience into their practice is that they don't want sessions to become academic lectures. Ann addresses this concern in this episode, giving practical guidance on how to find a balance between sharing the “why” and overwhelming clients with unnecessary information.Recognizing that there are now many neuroscience programs for coaches to choose from, Ann also gives advice on choosing the correct course - one that's both accurate and easy to apply. One red flag would be a program leader that focuses on the “typical brain,” for example, as Ann believes we are all (to some extent) neurotypical. From Ann's perspective, neuroscience has helped take her coaching from “just a thought” to a true exploration of reality. We had Ann Betz, an expert on the intersection of neuroscience, coaching, and relational trauma on The Porch. She joined us to talk about recognizing toxic traits in the workplace and what to do about it. So many of our guests felt seen and heard by what she shared, one attendee even called it “balm for the soul”. This is one of those conversations that can permanently change your perspective on toxicity in the workplace. If you don't have time to listen to the whole thing, here are some major key points: 1. It's the good, flexible, hard-working, intelligent souls that get worn to the bone by toxic relationships. In fact, having high empathy can make you a target for narcissism. 2. The FIRST sign of a toxic relationship is surprising because it feels good. It's called LOVE BOMBING and it's the initiation into a toxic dynamic. If someone is admiring you, lavishing praise on you, idealizing you, and it sounds too good to be true, it probably is! The irony is after being LOVE BOMBED for weeks or months, the individual is quickly DEVALUED and DISCARDED. All of a sudden, you aren't being asked to those meetings, and you aren't asked for your input. You may even feel accused of things you haven't done. This roller coaster of admiration and then accusation can be very disorienting. The individual with "super traits" like extremely high empathy will give more to try to fix this pattern. The average person won't tolerate and flex that far and will leave before the dynamic continues further. 3. One of the best things you can do is listen to your body after you leave a meeting. Your body is telling you the truth. If it seems too good to be true, or you feel very disoriented, this is a sign that you are walking into a toxic situation. 4. If you recognize that you are in a toxic dynamic, don't engage. You will not win. Do whatever it takes to get away (yes this may mean quitting your job). Ann said it best: "don't wrestle with a pig in the mud. You'll get dirty and the pig likes it..." Want to learn more about toxic relationship patterns? Coaching can feel like a black box!  Why does it work?  How can asking questions help someone change the way they think and behave?  Exploring the neuroscience behind transformation and effectiveness is important not only for coaches, but also for leaders who are embarking on coaching to make the most of a coaching programme and even take it further for themselves. My guest today is the leader of the Advanced Diploma that I'm studying right now: Ann Betz.   Ann explains why she was drawn to neuroscience and how she has  used it to take her coaching to a different level, understanding what we need to be truly effective and creative: an appropriate amount of stimulation, an ability to regulate emotions and to allow our brains to function with flexibility and adaptability by understanding the different components of the brain.  The best leaders are those who  use those parts of their brains to be flexible to communicate the big picture with empathy and to provide detail and structure: to zoom in and out, using both sides of the brain effectively to communicate well.   References: Daniel Siegel, Mindsight: The Science of Personal Transformation 2011About Ann Betz:Ann Betz, CPCC, PCC, MNTC, is the co-founder of BEabove Leadership and an international speaker and trainer on the intersection of neuroscience, coaching and human transformation.  In 2011, Ann studied neuroscience at the graduate level, and using this fascinating research, in 2012 co-developed (and is senior leader for) BEabove Leadership's popular training program for advanced coaches: Neuroscience, Consciousness and Transformational Coaching. “Hey, wait a minute. Maybe one the reasons why I'm exhausted all of the time is because I'm doing things that are out of alignment with my values.” Spend the time to find out what your values are and make decisions that are aligned with them. Values are about understanding your own internal compass: what are the things that you as an individual find important? What are the things that bring you energy and take energy away from you? Everyone has their own top-# list in their own particular order. This is why you make your decisions and other people make completely different ones. Figuring out more clearly what your values are, helps you make decisions that make sense in light of who you are. Unless there are values that are competing for priority in a certain situation. What do you do when two of your values are pulling against one another? Like valuing results *or* relationships. Or spending time on your own learning *or* on being kind to other people. That's where knowing your values is an even more significant part of your personal leadership. While seeing the paradox, knowing both of those conflicting values are true for you, right then and there you can still make decisions. Because you have the capability and the resourcefulness to be with that. Learn about a great way to focus on how they can actually help each other and integrate them together. Building your own unique foundation of personal leadership. In today's podcast, I talk with teacher and trainer, Ann Betz. We discuss the importance of being true to who you are, speaking your truth and expressing your emotions. We first start off with the famous question I ask in every podcast: How do you live authentically everyday? Ann Betz shares with us an important phrase that immediately comes to mind when she hears this question. As she answers this question, she talks about using the idea of consciousness and neuroscience to be a better person. We then get into discussing our ego and how its crucial that we recognize and celebrate it. We also go deeper into the importance of vulnerability and speaking your truth, even if it means taking a risk. We must trust that it will be the step closer to alignment and authenticity. Ann even talks about understanding your chakras and how it ties in with that. She also gets into how you can strengthen your ability to be an observer and look at things from a different perspective. Later in the podcast, we talk about toxicity and how we must distance ourselves from it and the people that carry it. We then touch brief on the education system, and the lack of more essential-to-life subjects that should be taught in school. We talk about how our mindset, and understanding it, is an important thing to learn and how it should be taught in the educational system. As parents, it's important that we teach our children this ourselves, so that they start learning it early on in life. Towards the end of this podcast, we talk deeply about emotions and the importance of expressing them. Ann shares with us a deep and personal experience that shows just how crucial it is to find ways to let our emotions out in an approach that's okay and can be honored. Ann says that this, rather than shutting our emotions down, is the road to healing. As we close up, Ann kindly offers us her amazing programs for all you professional coaches out there who would like to further improve your skills. She also mentions her neuroscience program where they look at how neuroscience relates to different levels of consciousness. I had an incredible time with Ann on the Porch this week. We talked about the importance of having a Chief People Officer with the sole focus of paying attention to and caring for humans in an organization. Here are a few take-aways: 1. Safe relationships help us moderate the stress that we encounter every day at work and in the world. 2. We are designed to neural regulate with each other then community at work. 3. One of the most stressful experiences for humans is feeling out of control and unable to predict the future. 4. Be as rooted as you can be as a leader, make promises you can keep, keep people informed. 5. Talk to your team and find out where you all can have some novelty, creativity, growth (anyone else stuck in groundhogs day right now?) 6. When we are bored OR overwhelmed, our brains don't work well. It's hard to fully wrap this conversation in a few bullets. So, if you're a Chief People Officer, if you just love humans and want to see them flourish, listen to this episode!

And that`s exactly what we`ll talk about today: How to become more integrated human beings, build better brains, and take our consciousness to the next level! Max Out Insights: Effectiveness is about less effort and more results As you become more integrated, you stop focusing too much on yourself Mine your past for gold - what did I learn and how does it help me now? If you want to manifest your dreams, visualize the feeling you`re after Decide the feeling you`re after and select people and situations aligned with that One key belief: I am good enough Find a circle that forces you to level up, with standards to uphold and expectations to meet We all set external goals, but what about internal ones: How honest and authentic can you be? How supportive and kind? How joyful and fun? The simplest, and yet hardest question you can ask yourself: What do you really want? Max Out Quotes: “We`re emotional beings, and then our brain comes along and rationalizes things.” “Keep dreaming and remembering in the helpful places.” “If you can`t have compassion for yourself, forget having it for someone else. It all starts inside.” “Who do I want to experience myself as?” “We evolve at the rate of the tribe we`re plugged into.” Connect with Ann: BEaboveLeadership
