Kodey Bogart, Retired Army Aviator, Educator, Entrepreneur, & Author: turning adversity into her superpower.   As many of us are familiar, adversity is a universal and inevitable part of life that most of us face through challenges like illness, loss, financial hardship, and the growing pains of life. Adversity is non-discriminatory, affecting all individuals regardless of gender, race, or socioeconomic status. No person is immune from it. While adversity introduces difficulties, it also plays a crucial role in personal growth and grit. Within society, we have witnessed how adversity drives innovation, strengthens community bonds, and enhances empathy. In the face of adversity, the history of women in aviation is a testament to resilience. Since the early days of flight, women like Élisabeth Thible, who flew in a hot air balloon in 1784, and Aida de Acosta, who in 1903 became the first woman to pilot a motorized aircraft, have been relentlessly reaching for the skies. The early 20th century saw women like Emma Lilian Todd designing successful airplanes and Georgia "Tiny" Broadwick performing parachute jumps, pushing the boundaries of what was considered possible for women at the time. Even with these successes, these pioneering women were often not considered serious aviators or contributors to the field. Despite their early involvement, women were also often restricted to working privately or in support roles in the aviation industry before 1970. Nonetheless, they were breaking records and competing in air races against men within the first two decades of powered flight. During World War II, while most female pilots were restricted from military flight, many served in auxiliary services and support roles. As time progressed, women continued to make progress, often in the background contributing greatly to our industry, with limited resources and a lack of community in their workplace.   The modern landscape for women in aviation is certainly improving with several organizations and initiatives dedicated to supporting women in the workforce, however, the data still reflects a significant gender gap. We learned from the FAA Women in Aviation Advisory Board report how women make up less than 20% of the aviation workforce, with even lower representation in pilot and maintenance roles. As of 2022, women account for just 9.57% of all pilots. When we exclude student licenses, the figure drops to 6.34% for non-student female pilots. The five-year trend leading up to 2022 does show growth in the number of female pilots, but the percentage increase is modest, sometimes being referred to a flatline growth.   Reflecting on the importance of gender equality in our industry and thinking about the conversations I have had with women in the industry, I've come to believe that a significant way to better support women is by actively listening to their stories, specifically on adversity. Hearing how they've transformed challenges, failures, and difficult moments into avenues for growth not only fosters equality but also empowers the next generation, who sometimes feel the pressure to be perfect. These storied provides practical guidance and perspective on resilience and perseverance, illustrating how to rise above obstacles and advance with determination. On a personal note, when I talk about adversity during keynote presentations, I find it to be healing as I share these experiences with others.  With this, we invited Kodey Bogart, Retired Army Aviator, Educator, Entrepreneur, and Author, to be our podcast guest this week and asked her to share her story. Kodey Bogart's career journey exemplifies the enduring spirit of women in aviation, demonstrating how resilience can turn adversity into triumph. Raised in Michigan with a love for the outdoors, art, and nature, Kodey faced an unfortunate challenge in her childhood that set her on a path of service rather than setbacks. She enlisted in the military after high school, where she discovered her passion for flight. As an Army Warrant Officer and Aviator, she was recognized with two Air Medals and a Sikorsky Rescue Award for her service during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Post-military, Kodey's aviation career continued as she flew over 2,500 hours of accident-free flight time, serving in air ambulance and aviation law enforcement roles. Her commitment to lifelong learning earned her a Master's in Aviation Safety from the Florida Institute of Technology and a Bachelor's from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, specializing in Helicopter Safety. Currently pursuing her Doctorate in Aviation with an emphasis on Safety and teaching part-time as an Adjunct Professor at FIT, Kodey balances her academic pursuits with motherhood, community engagement and authoring a series of books to educate and inspire the youth.

Less than one percent of the population is serving in the military at any given time, so a lot of people don't have those experiences and are interested in learning about them. Better known as "Tolly" reached the rank of Warrant Officer Class 2 both serving as a Paratrooper in the 3rd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment and Infantryman in the 6th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment. Tolly deployed on multiple deployments including two to Iraq, East Timor, Solomon Islands and Afghanistan twice. However during his first deployment to Afghanistan as a Platoon Sergeant with the famous Delta company in 6RAR they were involved in a battle that has been etched into Australian history in which the battalion had one Australian KIA and due to the efforts of some selected soldiers multiple honours were awarded for actions on the battlefield. One of those honours awarded was the highest in the Australian Honours and Awards system being the Victoria Cross and first one awarded to a regular infantry soldier since the Vietnam War. After an extensive career as a soldier Tolly noticed signs and symptoms of declining mental health and physical injuries sustained during service near the end of his tenure within the Defence Force which ultimately assisted in his decision to end his career within the Defence Force after 22 years. Listen in more for the incredible life story of Nathan Tolman. Let's Go.

We've reached the 40th episode of the Run The Race podcast, and hope you subscribe to it, if you haven't already. Our special guest this week is a yoga instructor and military spouse who is back home in Georgia after a 3,018 mile, 82 day bike ride across America! After I introduce her - and talk briefly about completing my first 50K alongside friends in Alabama - (5:33) you'll hear a great chat with Charlotte Gallagher, first about her solo bicycle journey from Portland, Oregon back to Columbus GA, raising more than $3,000 for several causes. She hopes this inspires you, others to go for your dreams! As someone fairly new to long distance biking and camping, (10:43) Charlotte opens up about the fears of this bike trip and fears in life, how she grew up with anxiety and panic attacks, resolved a lot through running and yoga. She also talks about the emotions through this 3 month bicycle adventure, experiencing a lot of kindness from strangers, screaming at continuous hills, crying. How was she able to keep going? How did she figure out where to sleep along the way? In the "Fast Four,"(17:00) we learn about this paddleboard yoga instructor living by "Change your thoughts, change your world," how she stays fit, and a carnival childhood. (20:29) Charlotte tackles the myths about yoga, like needing to be flexible before you do it, being able to touch you toes, ego issues for men and the military who end up enjoying yoga. She also tells us about the benefits of yoga, working all systems of your body, plus peace of mind, flexibility, releasing tension and anger on the mat, and fitness elements for athletes especially runners. Ever tried a tree pose on a paddleboard? And what's it like being a military spouse? (31:08) She runs and does yoga with her husband, an Army Warrant Officer on Fort Benning. He's gone on deployments and now she just got back from one via her bike. She talks more about one of the causes she raised money for, "Stop Soldier Suicide." We discuss the stigma and preventing suicide with the help of movement. (37:25) Charlotte has also spent parts of her life serving others overseas, telling us about teaching English in Mexico and helping with hurricane relief in the Caribbean. (40:41) Along with biking, she also loves running, her "moving meditation" to release energy that needs to get out because of anxiety. In the final segments, (46:15) our "Parting Gift" comes from the beginning of The Bible, "Food for Thought" deals with biking benefits and a teen's bike across America for clean water, then our closing prayer. Thanks for listening! Please share this with your friends using #RunTheRacePodcast. Also, write a quick review about it. For more info, go to www.wtvm.com/podcast/.

As our military brothers and sisters make the transition home to a nation that may genuinely support them, one’s sense of purpose is not always easy to find. As a country, we see that depression, post-traumatic stress or anxiety challenge many service members. At the same time, we see that barriers to thriving at home are not necessarily due to mental illness, rather to transitioning back to daily life. The irony is common: Community and connection can be found overseas within a unique culture of bonds, yet at times so hard to accomplish right in our own back yards. To dial in and learn more on service and the human connection, we sat with acclaimed author and director Sebastian Junger (The Perfect Storm, War, A Death In Belmont). As a combat journalist and work at ABC News and Vanity Fair, Sebastian is a non-military anthropologist who has much to teach us through personal and extensive engagements with our service members overseas. If there is one book you should read before or after listening to this episode, it is Sebastian's Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging, and while you are at it, see the documentary Restrepo. We enjoyed our visit and conversation with Sebastian at his home in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Greeted by Daisy, the docile Junger dog, we climbed to the second floor of an A-frame annex, with books dating back centuries lining the wall. Sebastian is genuine and easy going, and it was a true pleasure to talk with him, and take some notes...Following the conversation, join us for our first Diner Debrief, a time to meet at the local diner or coffee shop and chat.
