Shares in Taiwan broke a two-session falling streak Wednesday, as artificial intelligence stocks were boosted by expectations about an Nvidia Corp. investor conference later in the day. Analysts say after the index fell to the day's low of around 130 points, some bargain hunters jumped into the trading floor to pick up AI stocks, helping the broader market return to positive territory, and buying continued into the end of the session. Toddler hurt in Taichung blast discharged A 2 year-old girl from Macau, who sustained severe head injuries in the deadly gas explosion at a Taichung Shin Kong Mitsukoshi on February 13 has been discharged from China Medical University Hospital. She will be transported to Macau via a medical charter flight, according to the hospital. The girl's vital signs have stabilized after having been admitted in critical condition and a deep coma, though intracranial (顱內的) pressure remains a concern. The family was visiting Taiwan as a group of 7 when the explosion occurred. Here's our 2024 Top 5 Award Winners. 2024 was an eventful year! Related Links: https://talkingtaiwan.com/talking-taiwan-2024-top-5-award-winners-end-of-year-end-of-year-review-ep-302/ In January we headed to Taiwan to cover the Presidential election, thanks to the generous support of donors. While we were there, we covered the election from Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung. We were also able to hold two in-person podcast events where we met several of our Taiwan-based podcast guests in person for the very first time. In May we were shortlisted in the International Women's Podcast Awards Moment of Visionary Leadership category.   Then in July we brought Talking Taiwan to the 53rd annual Taiwanese American Conference East Coast (TAC-EC) where we created an on-location podcast studio and conducted 12 interviews in 3 days. We are grateful to have interviewed many of TAC-EC's wonderful speakers. And it we had the honor of interviewing Taiwan's former Vice President Dr. Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁) who is best known for his excellent handling of the COVID pandemic in Taiwan. After speaking with him I came away thinking that the world would be a much better place if we had more politicians like Dr. Chen. We'll be giving first listening access to this and other select interviews to anyone donating $50 or more to Talking Taiwan.   We never know what episodes are going to make the top 5 of the year and in this episode you'll hear the story behind number 1 episode of 2024.   2024 marked a big change in the way we do things. Previously nearly all of our interviews were done remotely, but in 2024, we did a number of interviews in person, most notably the one with Dr. Linda Gail Arrigo that got shortlisted in the International Women's Podcast Awards Moment of Visionary Leadership category.   We will be incorporating more in person interviews in 2025, and Talking Taiwan will be embarking on a North American Tour taking the podcast to communities on the East Coast, West Coast and Canada. In July we will be returning to the Taiwanese American Conference East Coast, and then heading to the Taiwanese American Conference on the West Coast in San Francisco. Later on in the year we will also head north to Taiwanfest in Toronto, Canada.   Your donation can help make all of this happen. Right now It's a great time to make a contribution because all contributions made will be doubled. The first $11k we raise will be doubled thanks to our generous matching donors. To support Talking Taiwan you can make donation by PayPal or Zelle using our email address talkingtaiwanpodcast@gmail.com or Venmo @talkingtaiwan. You can also send us a check at our PO box that you'll find on our website talkingtaiwan.com/support.    Thank you for listening. How can architecture help us to address the escalating climate emergency? There are many ways it can do so: from ensuring that new buildings are designed to radically reduce carbon emissions during construction, to doing the same in terms of how they will function..The Swiss architect, Philippe Rahm, is at the forefront of this process through his experiments with what he calls climatic architecture, the theme – and title - of his latest book. In this episode of Design Emergency, Philippe tells our cofounder Alice Rawsthorn how he developed the concept of climatic architecture and is putting it into practice..Born in Switzerland, Philippe studied architecture there and in France, where he runs Philippe Rahm Architectes, which he founded ten years ago in Paris. His mission is to enable buildings to become more ecologically responsible by aligning them with their locations and climates to make the most of the light, humidity and other natural phenomena in order to minimise the use of fossil fuels in heating or cooling them..Philippe tells Alice how these principles have been applied to completed and ongoing projects including: Central Park in the Taiwanese city of Taichung, the entrance to Maison de la Radio et de la Musique in Paris, and, working in collaboration with OMA, the Scalo Farini project to redevelop two disused railway yards in Milan..We hope you'll enjoy this episode. Good afternoon, I'm _____ with today's episode of EZ News. Taiwan donates US$50,000 to flood-hit Brazil Taiwan's government recently donated 50 thousand NT to Brazil to help the country cope (應付) with devastating floods. The floods have wreaked havoc across nearly 90 percent of municipalities in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Over 300 thousand homes were damaged, as well as roads, bridges and a hydroelectric plant. Local media reports say the death toll has risen to 126, and 141 are missing. The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Sao Paulo said the overseas Taiwanese community in Brazil have delivered essential supplies to disaster areas. The office hopes all victims can return to normal life as soon as possible. Brazilian officials said they're very grateful to Taiwan for providing immediate assistance. They say the people of the state will not forget the good deed. Taichung government introduces pet-friendly taxi service The Taichung City government is announcing a pet-friendly taxi service, allowing owners to bring their pets along without any additional charge. It said pet-owning passengers can choose from 16 local service providers listed on the website of the City's Transportation Bureau. And many drivers are pet owners themselves. Transport officials said passengers are required to place their pets in a cage before boarding. They must also ensure taxi cleanliness throughout the journey to avoid incurring (招致、遭受) an additional cleaning fee. They said the taxi fare is metered as a regular yellow cab service. But officials caution that those who choose non-traditional ones with various sizes and functions should pay attention to how they charge. Afghanistan Flash Floods Leave Dead and Missing Flash floods in northern Afghanistan sweep away livelihoods (生計), leaving hundreds dead and missing AP correspodnent Karen Chammas reports on floods in Afghanistan. Russia Putin Proposes Removing Defense Minister Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed removing Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu from his post. Putin nominated First Deputy Prime Minister Andrey Belousov for the role. The change comes weeks after a Russian deputy defense minister in charge of military construction projects, was jailed pending an investigation and trial on charges of bribery (受賄). In line with Russian law, the entire Russian cabinet resigned on Tuesday when Putin began his fifth presidential term at a Kremlin inauguration. The announcement came as Ukrainian officials say thousands more civilians have fled Russia's renewed ground offensive in Ukraine's northeast. The attacks have targeted towns and villages with a barrage of artillery and mortar shelling. The intense battles have forced at least one Ukrainian unit to withdraw in the Kharkiv region. This is a loss of more land to Russian forces across less defended settlements in the so-called contested gray zone along the Russian border. Prince Harry Meghan Visit Nigeria Britain's Prince Harry and his wife Meghan are visiting Lagos, Nigeria. They are promoting mental health for soldiers and empowering young people. The couple visited a local charity using sports to empower young people. Shares in Taiwan took a beating Wednesday, tumbling nearly 300 points, as investors took their cue from heavy losses suffered by tech stocks on U.S. markets overnight by trimming holdings in large electronics stocks on the local main board. Contract chipmaker TSMC led the downtrend as it failed to withstand stiff selling and fell below the nearest technical support at around its 20-day moving average by the end of the trading session. Over 30% vegetables fail pesticide residue tests: Foundation Testing conducted by an NPO finds that over 30-percent of fresh vegetables failed checks for pesticide residue (殘留物). The Consumer's Foundation says it purchased 12 randomly chosen vegetables in August 2023 at wet markets and traditional night markets in Taipei, New Taipei and Taichung, and pesticide residue testing resulted in a failure of 33-percent. And 67 percent of produce labeled or advertised as "organic" were found to contain large amounts of pesticide residue. The foundation says it used a rapid pesticide screening method recommended by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. It noted that suppliers of farm produce incorrectly labeled as organic can face fines up to $300-thousand NT according to government regulations. The foundation urged consumers to check whether vendors selling organic vegetables have a certificate indicating they have been certified to sell such produce and that it contains the name of the certification body and a registration number. We've got some big news for you! Talking Taiwan is taking the show on the road, back to Taiwan. Kaju and I are planning to be back there during the upcoming presidential election on January 13th. We will be doing election coverage and in-person interviews with some of our most popular guests, and new guests who are based in Taiwan. In order to do all that we want to do, we are going to have to do some fundraising and crowdfunding. Hear what we have planned and to learn how you can support the Talking Taiwan Election Tour! Related Links: https://talkingtaiwan.com/talking-taiwan-election-tour-2024-taking-the-show-on-the-road-ep-263/ Help us get the show on the road as we take the Talking Taiwan podcast back to Taiwan just in time for the presidential election on January 13th. There's never been a better time for us to do this! The presidential election comes around once every 4 years. We want to take this opportunity to showcase Taiwan's young vibrant democracy and to do some in-person episodes with guests who are based in Taiwan.   We're calling it our “Talking Taiwan Election Tour” campaign. We plan to do several election coverage episodes with Courtney Donovan Smith, who is a seasoned political commentator, Taiwan News columnist, ICRT correspondent, and has frequently appeared on Taiwan Plus News, and on the Taiwan Plus Taiwan Talks show. We're planning to meet with Courtney in Taichung to do a live in-person episode there.    During this trip we are not only going to be in Taipei and Taichung but we plan to also travel down to Kaohsiung. We'll be doing coverage and meeting with special guests from northern, central and southern Taiwan. I'm looking forward to meeting some of our past guests in-person for the very first time. Speaking of meeting people in person…    While we are in Taiwan there will be two special in-person gatherings organized for Talking Taiwan, one at the Pic Collage Office, thanks to John Fan, and another gathering will be held at 4SC CrossFit's Xindian Branch, thanks to T.H. Schee.    PLEASE NOTE: GoFundMe donors will not be eligible to attend these in-person gatherings, due to GoFundMe's rules and regulations which state that 1) fundraisers that offer perks or rewards to donors aren't allowed and 2) no raffles, sweepstakes, giveaways, or promotions may be offered in exchange for any donations made to your GoFundMe.   If you'd like a special invitation to one of these in-person gatherings with us in Taipei, make sure you make your donation via Paypal: https://tinyurl.com/zn3zm9ux, Zelle, Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/talkingtaiwan, or personal check and provide us with your email address.   Our goal is to raise $25,000 to cover all expenses for the “Talking Taiwan Election Tour” like air fare, accommodations, travel within the island, transporting all of our equipment and other incidentals. We are setting a deadline of December 31st to raise money for this trip.    We're off to a great start because we are starting off with a Matching Donation Pledge of $5,000 offered by Patrick Huang. This means the first $5,000 we raise will be automatically doubled to $10,000 and we'll be nearly halfway to reaching our fundraising goal.    During this campaign we will be completely transparent in publicly listing the names of donors and the amounts donated, however if you'd like to be kept anonymous, you can indicate this when you donate on GoFundMe or inform us at the time of your donation via email at talkingtaiwanpodcast@gmail.com. The tally for “Talking Taiwan's Election Tour” will be shown on the Talking Taiwan website and on our GoFundMe page the count will begin after $19,129. So we will need to reach a total of $44,129 on GoFundMe.   There are some other ways that you can support us. You can donate/offer housing during our stay, or donate airline tickets, or hook us up with discounted airfares.     We'll be sure to share more exciting news and announcements as the campaign progresses. So stay tuned for more updates from us.    We are so grateful for our growing listenership and want to thank you to all of our listeners, past, present and future. It's thanks to you and all of our supporters and donors that make what we do possible.    So help us get this show on the road. And raise the money by December 31st!   Support Talking Taiwan: https://talkingtaiwan.com/support/   GoFundMe: https://www.gofundme.com/f/building-talking-taiwans-legacy/donate   PayPal: https://tinyurl.com/zn3zm9ux Zelle: talkingtaiwanpodcast@gmail.com   Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/talkingtaiwan Related Links: https://talkingtaiwan.com/talking-taiwan-election-tour-2024-taking-the-show-on-the-road-ep-263/

Sam Lin is the New York-based veteran bubble tea shop owner who you heard from in episode 238 about bubble tea featuring Kristin McCoy-Ward. If you're a bubble tea lover, that episode is definitely worth a listen, Kristen covered everything you'd ever want to know about bubble tea and more.   Related Links: https://talkingtaiwan.com/bubble-tea-sam-from-quickly-to-coco-running-bubble-tea-shops-for-20-years-in-nyc-ep-245/   Sam talked to me about how he grew up in Taiwan eating tapioca in desserts, before there was even this thing called bubble tea. Consequently, he has some interesting thoughts on who invented bubble tea.     He brought the Quickly bubble tea shop from Taiwan to New York in 2003, and looking back on his first year of running a bubble tea shop, he recalls the trials and tribulations and that he barely survived it. With perseverance and an improved understanding of how to run a bubble tea shop, Sam moved on from Quickly to opening and running Coco bubble tea shops. Sam now owns and operates 22 Coco bubble tea shops in New York, New Jersey and Boston.   Here's a little preview of what we talked about in this podcast episode:   ·      Sam's connection to Taiwan ·      How Sam grew up eating tapioca before there was bubble tea ·      How Sam brought the Quickly bubble tea brand from Taiwan to New York in 2003 ·      How Sam struggled during the first year of running his first Quickly bubble tea shop and later ran eight Quickly shops ·      Which tea shop in Taiwan invented bubble tea ·      The outcome of the 10-year lawsuit over who invented bubble tea Chun Shui Tang (tea shop in Taichung, Taiwan) or Hanlin (tea shop in Tainan, Taiwan) ·      How Sam got involved in opening and running Coco bubble tea shops and now runs 22 shops in New York, New Jersey and Boston ·      What affects the texture of tapioca balls (and makes them too hard or too soft) ·      How the bubble tea scene in New York has changed since Sam opened his firs bubble tea shop in 2003 ·      How bubble tea is a relatively easy business to run compared to other restaurant or food-related businesses ·      How tapioca balls only last for 4 hours after being cooked ·      How Sam believes that there is more opportunity for bubble tea shops to open up in the U.S., and that there should be a bubble tea shop in every college town ·      How it's important not to undercut the price of bubble tea to maintain the health of the bubble tea industry ·      Bubble Teak Kristen's YouTube channel ·      The need for a bubble tea business association ·      Important considerations for people who want to open up a bubble tea shop ·      How much capital is needed to start a bubble tea shop business ·      What is required to set up a bubble tea shop ·      What makes a bubble tea shop successful   Related Links: https://talkingtaiwan.com/bubble-tea-sam-from-quickly-to-coco-running-bubble-tea-shops-for-20-years-in-nyc-ep-245/

The Midday Show
Acuña cleared by Braves to play in World Baseball Classic

The Midday Show

The World Baseball classic may be the most underrated sports tournament in the world. Twenty international teams will clash in the WBC, initially split in to four pools in the cities of Taichung, Tokyo, Phoenix, and Miami. In 2017 USA took home the gold for the first time by beating Japan in the finals. In a 2017 semi-finals game, Baltimore Orioles star Adam Jones robbed a homerun from fellow Oriole Manny Machado, which was one of the most memorable moments in the tournament (for USA). If we get the same finals matchup this year as we did in 2017, we'll get to see Angels stars Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani oppose each other, possibly with Ohtani on the mound. The Braves' Ronald Acuña expressed interest in wanting to play in the tournament representing his native Venezuela earlier in the year, but because of the ongoing rehabilitation of his surgically repaired right knee he was advised against it, until now. After seeing Acuña on the knee in the early spring, the Braves have changed their mind, and this is a good thing. Acuña will spend two weeks at Braves spring training before he reports to Miami, so if anything doesn't look right, they can always reverse course. And, as was discussed on "The Midday Show w/ Andy and Randy", he won't have to travel from Miami for the entirety of the tournament. Not only does pool B, which includes Team Venezuela, play all of their games at LoanDepot Park in Miami, but the quarters, semis, and finals are in Miami as well. In the event of a Venezuela early departure from the tournament, Acuña simply joins the Braves in Venice for the rest of Spring Training. The World Baseball Classic kicks off on March 8.
