Ferragosto, Italy's national summer holiday, is upon us. In this episode, we're joined by Puglia travel planner Luca of Puglia With Locals to explain why August can be such a busy (and sometimes surprising) time to visit Puglia and Italy. At the centre of the month is Ferragosto on 15 August. For Italians, it's a time for family, barbecues and days at the beach. For visitors, however, it can come as a surprise. Some businesses close for their annual holidays, restaurants may operate reduced hours or be fully booked well in advance, and much of the country seems to pause as locals head to the coast. August, sondern der Höhepunkt des Sommers in Italien – die Ferien des Augustus eben.Wir brechen heute auf. In die entgegengesetzte Richtung. Der Hitze entfliehen. Eine Woche Nordsee, dann ans Nordkap. Klar, wir sind urlaubsreif. Eine turbulente Zeit liegt hinter uns. Wir haben hohe Erwartungen an diesen Urlaub. Aber wir sind nicht unter Leistungsdruck. Freizeitstress. Nein, wir wollen in erster Linie entspannen. Lassen sogar die Fahrräder zu Hause, und das will bei uns etwas heißen.Heute erst mal 800 Kilometer nach Norden bis an den Strand nördlich von Kiel. Auch nicht mit dem Wohnwagen. Wir haben auf dem Campingplatz ein Mobilhome gebucht. Wir freuen uns auf Strandspaziergänge, schwimmen, in der Sonne liegen, lesen, Fischbrötchen. Und dann geht's weiter mit dem Schiff nach Oslo. Mit der Bahn an die Westküste Norwegens nach Bergen. Und dann die Küste hinauf bis ans Nordkap. Zurück über die Lofoten. Die eine oder andere Fjord-Wanderung ist dabei. La parola "Ferragosto" viene dal latino Feriae Augusti, che significa "il riposo di Augusto" o, se preferisci, "le vacanze di Augusto". Piccola chicca linguistica: la parola latina feriae indicava i giorni di riposo, ed è la stessa parola da cui deriva l'italiano moderno "ferie", cioè i giorni di vacanza dal lavoro. Quindi, la prossima volta che dirai "sono in ferie", sappi che stai usando una parola vecchia di più di duemila anni. L'Imperatore Augusto e le Origini della Festa Ma chi era questo Augusto? Era il primo imperatore romano, e fu proprio lui, nel 18 a.C., a istituire questo periodo di riposo. Dopo mesi di lavoro nei campi, i contadini avevano finalmente il diritto di fermarsi, festeggiare e tirare il fiato. In fondo, gli italiani prendono la pausa di agosto molto sul serio da sempre. Augusto era un personaggio così importante che, qualche anno dopo, il mese che prima si chiamava sextilis venne ribattezzato augustus in suo onore. Sì, hai indovinato: è da lì che arriva la parola "agosto". Questo imperatore ha dato quindi il suo nome sia alla festa sia al mese intero. All'inizio, però, il Ferragosto non si festeggiava il 15, ma il 1° agosto, e non durava un solo giorno: era un lungo periodo di feste, che si univa ad altre celebrazioni romane come i Consualia, le feste dedicate a Conso, il dio della terra e della fertilità. Si mangiava, si beveva e ci si riposava: un rituale che ancora oggi non ci è del tutto estraneo. Perché il 15 Agosto? La Doppia Anima della Festa Ma allora perché oggi il Ferragosto è il 15 agosto e non il 1°? La risposta arriva molti secoli dopo, con la Chiesa cattolica. La Chiesa spostò la festa al 15 agosto per farla coincidere con una celebrazione religiosa molto importante: l'Assunzione di Maria. Secondo la tradizione cristiana, in questo giorno la Madonna venne "assunta", cioè portata in cielo in anima e corpo. Ecco perché il Ferragosto ha una doppia anima: da una parte le sue origini pagane e romane, dall'altra la festa cristiana. Due mondi diversi che si incontrano nello stesso giorno. Perché a Ferragosto Tutti Vanno al Mare? Come mai nella testa di ogni italiano "Ferragosto" fa subito rima con "mare", "montagna" e "gita"? Questa tradizione è molto più recente di quello che si potrebbe pensare. Facciamo un salto negli anni '30 del Novecento, e più precisamente nel 1931. In quell'anno, in Italia, il regime fascista inaugurò i cosiddetti "Treni Popolari di Ferragosto": biglietti a prezzi ridottissimi che permettevano anche alle famiglie meno ricche di fare una gita e vedere, magari per la prima volta nella vita, il mare o la montagna. C'erano due possibilità: La gita di un solo giorno, in un raggio di circa 50-100 chilometri. La gita di tre giorni, entro circa 100-200 chilometri. C'era però un piccolo dettaglio: in questi viaggi i pasti non erano inclusi. E quindi cosa facevano gli italiani? Si portavano il cibo da casa. È proprio da qui che nasce una delle tradizioni più amate di questa giornata: il famoso pranzo al sacco, la grigliata all'aperto, il picnic con la famiglia. A Roma, questi turisti "fai da te" che si portavano il cibo da casa avvolto in un fagotto venivano chiamati "fagottari": una parola simpatica da tirare fuori al momento giusto. Se oggi a Ferragosto ti ritrovi a mangiare un panino seduto su un prato o davanti al mare, sappi che stai portando avanti una tradizione con quasi cento anni di storia. Tradizioni e Curiosità del Ferragosto di Oggi Come si festeggia oggi il Ferragosto in Italia? Ecco qualche immagine tipica: La grigliata è la grande protagonista. Ferragosto è l'unico giorno dell'anno in cui ogni italiano si sente, all'improvviso, un maestro della griglia — o almeno ci prova. Il mare, con le spiagge affollatissime, i fuochi d'artificio la sera e, in tantissimi paesi, le sagre, cioè le feste popolari dove si mangiano i piatti tipici del posto. Ce ne sono altre, molto conosciute, dietro le quali si nasconde un pezzo di storia vecchio di duemila anni. Facciamo un piccolo viaggio nel tempo. Il Natale e la Nascita del Sole Partiamo dalla festa più amata di tutte: il Natale. I Romani, intorno al solstizio d'inverno, festeggiavano due ricorrenze molto importanti. La prima erano i Saturnali, in onore del dio Saturno, che si celebravano più o meno dal 17 al 23 dicembre: erano giorni di banchetti, di regali e di allegria in cui i ruoli si rovesciavano, e persino i padroni servivano a tavola i loro schiavi. La seconda festa era il Dies Natalis Solis Invicti, cioè il "giorno di nascita del Sole Invitto", celebrato il 25 dicembre. In quel periodo, dopo la notte più lunga dell'anno, le giornate ricominciavano ad allungarsi, e i Romani festeggiavano la "rinascita" del Sole. Con il passare dei secoli, la Chiesa fissò la nascita di Gesù proprio il 25 dicembre, facendola coincidere con queste antichissime feste. Attenzione, però: anche su questo legame gli storici discutono. Non ci sono prove definitive che il Natale sia nato "sopra" la festa del Sole, e c'è persino chi pensa che il 25 dicembre derivi da un calcolo religioso, cioè nove mesi dopo il 25 marzo. Chicca linguistica: la parola "Natale" viene dal latino natalis, che significa proprio "relativo alla nascita", "compleanno". Quando scambi i regali sotto l'albero, stai quindi ripetendo un gesto che i Romani facevano già duemila anni fa. Il Capodanno e il Dio con Due Facce Andiamo avanti di qualche giorno e arriviamo al Capodanno. Perché si festeggia l'inizio dell'anno proprio il 1° gennaio? Anche qui la risposta è romana. Furono i Romani a fissare il primo giorno dell'anno al 1° gennaio, e a renderlo ufficiale fu Giulio Cesare con il suo nuovo calendario, nel 46 a.C. E perché proprio gennaio? Perché il mese era dedicato a Giano, il dio degli inizi, rappresentato con due facce: una che guarda al passato e una che guarda al futuro. Un simbolo perfetto per iniziare un anno nuovo. Le tre chicche linguistiche del Capodanno: La parola "gennaio" viene proprio da Ianuarius, cioè dal nome del dio Giano. Giano era il dio delle porte, e "porta" in latino si dice ianua: Giano è letteralmente il dio che apre le porte del nuovo anno. I Romani si scambiavano dei regali beneauguranti, tra cui dei fichi chiamati strenae: da lì arriva la parola "strenna", che ancora oggi si usa per i regali di Natale e Capodanno. Persino la parola "calendario" viene dal latino calendae, il primo giorno del mese romano. San Valentino e una Festa un Po' Incerta Andiamo avanti e arriviamo a febbraio, con la festa degli innamorati: San Valentino. Qui la storia è affascinante ma anche un pochino incerta. C'è una versione molto popolare che collega San Valentino a un'antica festa romana chiamata Lupercalia, che si celebrava intorno al 15 febbraio: erano feste di purificazione e di fertilità, piuttosto vivaci, dedicate al dio Fauno. Secondo questa versione, la Chiesa avrebbe sostituito i Lupercalia con la festa di San Valentino, il 14 febbraio. Molti storici oggi sono però scettici su questo collegamento diretto, e fanno notare che l'idea di San Valentino come "festa degli innamorati" è in realtà molto più recente, nata nel Medioevo. La verità è quindi meno lineare di quanto si racconti in giro. Chicca linguistica: il nome del mese "febbraio" viene dal latino februa, le strisce di pelle che i sacerdoti romani usavano proprio durante quei riti di purificazione. Il Carnevale e il Mondo alla Rovescia Chiudiamo con una festa allegra e colorata: il Carnevale. Anche in questo caso si può tornare ai Saturnali. Ricordi che, durante quei giorni, i ruoli si rovesciavano e quasi tutto era permesso? Quel "mondo alla rovescia", con le maschere, gli scherzi e l'allegria sfrenata, è lo stesso spirito che ritroviamo ancora oggi nel Carnevale italiano: un'eredità romana che, ogni inverno, riempie di coriandoli le piazze del Paese. ...

Welcome to Vatican Insider on a weekend of scorching temperatures in much of the northern hemisphere of the world, with big time heatwaves in Europe and the United States! And welcome to a special I've prepared for what is normally the interview segment of VI – I call it the lazy, hazy summer days of ferragosto – life in Italy in August which, of course, starts this weekend. You learn the origin of the name August and the meaning of a very important word in the Italian language – Ferragosto! August is not just a month in Italy. It is THE month and life in Italy in August is very different from so many other countries from stores, offices, pharmacies, movie theatres, cafes and restaurants, and many more spots closing for a holiday period – chiuso per ferie. If that's not enough, doctors and other medical personnel can take weeks, maybe even a month, off at ferragosto…situations we'd never think of finding in the US, for example. Not to mention the annual snowfall in Rome on August 5! It's a fun special so stay tuned after the news segment.
