Metal Debate Album Review - Chasing Euphoria (Lutharo)

The Great Metal Debate Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 15, 2024 7:57

Welcome to Metal Debate podcast. In March 2024 Canadian metal clan Lutharo returns with their sophomore full-length album “Chasing Euphoria.” Lutharo kick things off with “Reaper's Call,” an agreeable track that keeps it pretty close-to-the-vest musically. Lutharo are excellent at creating an aesthetic of anger and aggression but also positivity and hope. This one sets a high bar for my expectations for the rest of the album. The next track is “Ruthless Bloodline,” a song front loaded with extreme and fast paced riff-craft and screams, but also with a choral melody that is incredibly catchy. I love the aggression displayed by vocalist Krista Shipperbottom. It's a killer track and one that was a true headbanger when I saw them play live last year. “Time To Rise” is one of my favorite songs from the album and a true gem. Here Shipperbottom flips her standard gameplan with soft, melodic versing transitioning into a harsher – yet still pleasingly melodic – chorus. This one just flows wonderfully with each musical element fitting snuggly alongside the other. Next is “Born To Ride.” This is such a fun track, and one which has also been released as a tongue-in-cheek concept video. Musically, this is another uptempo melodic winner with great riffs, solid singing, and some 80s metal feels. Things go in a more classic heavy/thrash direction instrumentally on “Bonded To The Blade.” I'm not sure the vocal mix on the pre-break bridge exactly worked, but I do appreciate they did something different there and made the effort. Toward the end of the track I enjoyed the whispered lyrics and symphonic elements which further differentiated this one. More great melody and plenty of aggression on the chorus. #6 in the listing is the title track “Chasing Euphoria.” I like the overall song structure and especially the tasteful solo from Bucur makes it worth the cost of admission. Somewhat different than any other song they've released before, again representing that the band are continuing to evolve and push the boundaries of their sound. “Creating A King” sounds a bit like contemporary Flotsam And Jetsam to my ears in how it melds the thrash and power metal feel. It's another example of some outstanding song construction by this band taking the listener through a number of tempos and colorations while still successfully maintaining tight song cohesion. The next song, “Strong Enough To Fall,” does a fine job delivering a divine guitar melody and one of Shipperbottom's best vocal expressions on the album. The guitar, bass and drum work together at a groovy pace crafting a captivating energy. Super catchy and upbeat; there's nothing not to like here. The tenth track “Paradise or Parasite” gives us another excellent lead break augmented by a helping of superb orchestral backing that really solidifies the overall sound. I love what Shippenbottom does toward the end giving kind of a falsetto prior to her more agonized screaming. The song's orchestral outro is glorious! “Chasing Euphoria” closes out the tracklisting with “Freedom Of The Night” which starts softly and then evinces a grand feel. Coming in at 7 minutes it's the longest song on the album. There's plenty of time changes throughout and some gentle parts here and there, though still more than enough of aggression. There's also more orchestral flourishes. Not a bad track, but not one of my favs. I'm giving this album a rating of 9 ½ out of ten. "Chasing Euphoria" is released March 15th through Atomic Fire Records. Preorder it now – it'll put a smile on your face and then will proceed to rip your face off!

On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to Mr. Lordi, an amazing musician and artist known for his music, visuals, cinema, and artistry. Pipeman is impressed by Lordi's latest music video, Dead Again Jayne, and asks him about it. Lordi explains that the video is meant to look like an 80s cable TV horror show showcasing a 1930s old Universal horror movie. He directed and edited the video himself, and he had fun doing two different styles, the 80s cheap cable TV style and the 1930s black and white film style. Lordi reveals that young people today do not understand the concept of television and the old cable TV show since they have never experienced it before. Lordi shares that he has never been on social media and still lives in the 80s and 90s, and he acknowledges that these decades were the greatest. Pipeman agrees, and they discuss how technology has changed the artistry of music videos. Lordi believes that the magic of the videos is gone now that anyone can do it, and the charm is lost. Lordi also talks about one little detail from the video shoot where he noticed that younger film crew members did not know how to use a film camera since everything is now digital. Pipeman and Lordi continue to chat about various topics such as how Lordi likes to scare people and how he sees himself as an entertainer rather than a musician. Lordi also reveals that he is currently working on his autobiography, which he hopes to release soon. Pipeman and Lordi continue to chat about various topics such as how Lordi likes to scare people and how he sees himself as an entertainer rather than a musician. Lordi also reveals that he is currently working on his autobiography, which he hopes to release soon. Overall, Pipeman and Lordi have a fun and insightful conversation about Lordi's latest music video, the evolution of technology and artistry, and Lordi's upcoming projects. Screem Writers Guild, a new beast of an album by the beloved Finnish hard rock monster squad, is out TODAY on Atomic Fire Records. Its title — a “LORDIfied” play on words — is a reference to the “Screen Writers Guild,” an association of Hollywood screenplay writers (1920s to 1950s), yet there is no doubt that LORDI‘s musical version is much louder and fiercer. “The record itself isn't a real concept album, but it obviously plays with the overall cinematic theme,” says Mr. Lordi. Screem Writers Guild was produced by Mr. Lordi with Mana and Janne Halmkrona as executive producers. Ilkka Herkman took care of mixing and Pauli Saastamoinen mastered the record. The artwork was also designed by Mr. Lordi himself who has made a name as director for the band's vision since the early '90s. Screem Writers Guild will be available in the following formats: Limited Collector's Box Set – Includes alternative cover artwork, CD-digipak, 2xLP in gatefold, exclusive Live At Masters Of Rock DVD featuring five live songs, five band member portrait art prints plus LORDI notebook. The box set will be available in three color variants: – Red/Black Splatter vinyl @ Atomic Fire Records Mailorder – Green Marbled vinyl @ EMP – Purple/Black Marbled vinyl @ Atomic Fire Records US Mailorder, Nuclear Blast, and Levykauppa Äx Other configurations: – CD-digipak – 2xLP gatefold (Transparent/Blue Marbled) – 2xLP gatefold (Red/Black Splatter; only available in Europe) – 2xLP gatefold (Green Marbled; only available @ EMP) – 2xLP gatefold (Purple/Black Marbled; only available @ Atomic Fire Records US Mailorder, Nuclear Blast, and Levykauppa Äx) – digital Order the album, pre-save it on your favorite DSP, or preorder it digitally at THIS LOCATION. Founded in 1992 by singer, songwriter, and designer Mr. Lordi, LORDI are one of the major Finnish rock/heavy metal acts of our time. Originally rooted in Rovaniemi (Northern Lapland, Finland), the band achieved their international breakthrough after winning the Eurovision Song Contest with their hit song “Hard Rock Hallelujah” in 2006. Since then, the unconventional troop has rocked their way into the spotlight of Europe with charm, unforgettable tunes, and elaborate monster costumes, and have become an integral part of the lineups of globally recognized festivals such as Wacken Open Air (DE) and Masters of Rock (CZ) among others. “A concept album of sorts, Screem Writers Guild plays out like a twisted musical, with numerous faux-macabre spoken word interludes and lashings of cinematic ambience amidst nods to '70s and '80s horror flicks. In between, LORDI dish out some of their sharpest songs in years.” — Blabbermouth “Screem Writers Guild, has everything it needs for the haunted motif, from the dark lyrics to the spooky key-laden hard rock and undead monster visuals. At the same time, the band also delivers the hard chops to back it up, drawing from greats like Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and Alice Cooper.” — Riff Magazine “…a wonderfully promising starting point in the band's new beginning.” – Chaos Zine “Delivering LORDI‘s typically mocking and sarcastic style, this is a jubilation featuring enjoyably choruses and intriguing harmonies which are impossible to withstand!” — Rock Hard Italy “They've absolutely nailed the message they want to put across, and they do it in a very entertaining way.” – Metal Talk LORDI: Mr. Lordi – vocals Kone – guitars Hiisi – bass Hella – keyboard Mana – drumsPipeman in the Pit is a music and interview segment of The Adventures of Pipeman Radio Show (#pipemanradio) and from The King of All Festivals while on The Pipeman Radio Tour. Adventurers, heed the call of Icelandic newcomers POWER PALADIN as they have finally unleash their debut album With The Magic Of Windfyre Steel via Atomic Fire Records! The six-piece kick-start their journey of conquering the hearts of power metal fanatics globally today with a record that delivers nine highly infectious anthems. As if this wasn't enough, the band has prepared a brand new animated music video for another new track in cooperation with students of well-known Melbourne, Australia based RMIT University who previously collaborated with acts such as Helloween, Children Of Bodom, Tankard, Korpiklaani, Alestorm, and more. Comments the band on these festive happenings, “We still remember that moment after we just finished recording our first album with our no-name band on an island with a total number of inhabitants of less than 375,00, not that far from the North pole and suddenly got hit with a record deal and started to hear that people were actually anticipating the record. It was a kind of a weird situation to be in. We were also joking about how fun it would be to create an animated video for one of our songs and laughed at the idea because we only know a tiny fraction of the work that is involved in creating such a video, and it is a lot. That's why we were even more surprised when RMIT University signalized their interest in making an animated video for our song ‘Creatures Of The Night' as they usually choose from a ‘highly classified' list of bands that they work with. The whole process was very enjoyable, and it was very fun to watch how the sketches slowly turned into form. We would like to thank RMIT University, Simon Norton, his students and all those who helped make this video become reality. It blew all our expectations out of the water and we think it could not have turned out better. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.” http://www.powerpaladin.is http://www.facebook.com/powerpaladinice http://www.instagram.com/powerpaladinice http://www.youtube.com/powerpaladinofficial The Dark Side Of Music | Facebook https://www.facebook.com/thedarksideof_music The Dark Of Music (@thedarksideof_music) • Instagram photos and videos https://www.instagram.com/thedarksideof_music/ Black Rose Media (theblackrosemedia.com) https://www.theblackrosemedia.com/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thedarksideofmusic/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thedarksideofmusic/support
