Episode 361: On October 4, 1957, as the world's eyes turned skyward to witness the launch of Sputnik 1, another technological marvel was about to be unveiled in a hangar in Malton, Ontario. The Avro Arrow, Canada's ambitious supersonic interceptor, was poised to revolutionize aviation. But within two years, it would vanish without a trace, leaving behind a legacy of controversy and conspiracy. When the Avro Arrow debuted, it was a revolutionary aircraft that broke records almost immediately. Then, as soon as it took to the air, it was mothballed and scrapped, changing the aerospace industry of Canada, the United States and United Kingdom forever. Witness to Yesterday (The Champlain Society Podcast on Canadian History)
Larry Ostola talks to Palmiro Campagna about his book, The Avro Arrow: For the Record. The controversial cancellation of the Avro Arrow — an extraordinary achievement of Canadian military aviation — continues to inspire debate today. When the program was scrapped in 1959, all completed aircraft and those awaiting assembly were destroyed, along with tooling and technical information. Was abandoning the program the right decision? Did Canada lose more than it gained? Brimming with information to fill the gaps in the Arrow's troubled history, Campagna's new edition also brings to light recently discovered documents that answer whether the United States government wished Canada to continue the development of what was considered the world's most advanced interceptor aircraft. Palmiro Campagna is the author of Storms of Controversy: The Secret Avro Arrow Files Revealed, Requiem for A Giant: A.V. Roe Canada and the Avro Arrow, and The UFO Files: The Canadian Connection Exposed. He lives in Ottawa. Becca rejoins the show for the first time since we moved to Calgary, and tells us about some very strange DMs she got about her ex that were connected to a profile that had some very weird posts about her ex. It no longer exists, but is one of the weirder blocks we've ever seen on the show. The episode gets weird too, as we reminisce on our old apartment and talk toilet seats, new video games, cycling in the snow, and chess. In the social media updates, Becca brings back a very popular segment in the show's history: unearthing old social media posts of John's for the listener's enjoyment (and his embarrassment). This time, she goes to Facebook, and there are some doozies. And finally, Stefan finds a weird Bandy video and John watches a guy sprain his ankle. You know what's better than spraining your ankle? Becoming a donor to the show! For just $5/month, you'll get access to THREE bonus episodes every month over at patreon.com/blockedparty. Last week, Lance St. Laurent returned to discuss the Avro Arrow, and this week, our friend and sports analyst Blake Murphy joins us for a Heck/Cullen episode where we get the lowdown on how to get into covering sports professionally. Lee and Leah celebrate episode 300 of the podcast by looking at a Canadian-made martial arts/sci-fi/comedy indie short, starring Leah herself! It's 2019's "Ghost Beaver Kick", written and directed by Stefan Phillips. Of course, Leah has a lot to say about this one, providing a lot of background info on the production and the experience of working on the film. Maple syrup, pancakes, cyborgs, ninjas, mutants, scale models of the Avro Arrow, and ski-doo action scenes are just a few of the things talked about in this one. Lee also talks about what he's watched recently, and responds to listener comments. It's cold out there, folks, and there's ninjas looking to do us harm, so put on your toque, and grab some pancakes to go. We've got a world to save! In this episode I am interviewing a fellow supporter of nuclear energy who, although not a Canadian, she posted an article on Canada Day singing the praises of the CANDU reactor. I think CANDU is an underappreciated technological wonder, similar to the Avro Arrow. It is also at risk of going down that same path unless Canadians rise up and tell their MPs and MPPs that we need more of them. The Avro Arrow was designed and tested before the advent of computer test simulating. So, instead, the Arrow team at A. V. Roe made a bunch of scale models, attached them to rockets, and launched them (with varying degrees of success) over Lake Ontario. The Avro Canada CF-105 Arrow was a delta-winged interceptor aircraft designed and built by Avro Canada. The CF-105 held the promise of Mach 2 speeds at altitudes exceeding 50,000 feet and was intended to serve as the Royal Canadian Air Force's primary interceptor into the 1960s and beyond. But a host of political and financial issues grounded this extraordinary plane before it had a chance to take to the skies. This week, Grace and Linnea explore the strange history of the Arrow and ask "Why are people so nostalgic for it?" Hunter Scholey of the North of Normal Podcast contributed to this episode by providing a history of the Arrow miniseries (1997) that the Heritage Minute was pulled from. North of Normal invites a different guest bi-weekly to come and discuss Canadian films, their impact, and what they say about Canada. Check it out here!Avro Arrow Heritage MinuteMinute Women

The Avro Arrow was a revolutionary aircraft that was faster than any other aircraft in the world. Before it could go into full production, and after $400 million had been spent, the program was scrapped by the Diefenbaker government.

With the creation of the A.V. Roe Canada company following the Second World War, Canada became a leader in the aerospace industry. The company developed the C-102 jetliner and the CF-100 Canuck, the first Canadian-designed military fighter aircraft. In 1953, at the height of the Cold War, the Royal Canadian Air Force (the RCAF) commissioned A.V. Roe to design a new plane: a supersonic jet that could engage and destroy enemy interceptors before they reached their targets in North America. That supersonic jet was the Avro Arrow. It was intended to serve as the RCAF’s primary interceptor, and was one of the most advanced aircraft of its era with the potential to establish Canada as a world leader in scientific research and development. Unfortunately, the project was ultimately cancelled. In part one of this two-part episode, we talk with Palmiro Campagna and two LAC employees about the Avro Arrow and the documents held at LAC.

A correction to last week, Andrew said Canadians were in Afghanistan training Iraqis, that clearly makes no sense, the article in the Ottawa Citizen said Iraq and Iraqis and I said Afghanistan in error. Second correction, my mistake, I mistakenly called Hezbollah, Suni when they are in fact Shia. Email from Todd; Subject: Assassination Andrew: I was having a good time with all the memes about that douche that went on to a well deserved dirt nap until you approached the subject last night. You made me realize a lot of our values and morals were seriously bent doing this. I did some more reading and research away from the two extremes and it supports your stance. I am the first guy to enjoy seeing these bastards die, but this broke laws and is a huge strategic risk. To the point I would have to ask why was it done ? Possibilities; 1) Simple wag the dog move. Trump thinks it will play well with his base for the election. The evidence against this is that he did not react to the oil tanker nonsense, the shooting down of the drone and other fuckery the Mullahs are up to. 2) Trump is doing it take the focus away from the impeachment. I think this is a reach as it is putting more heat on his opposition than him. 3) The neocons got his ear and he has decided to continue the PNAC doctrine and finish off North Korea and Iran. They are the only two left standing. If so very bad news as this means at best another decade of war or a real short world war if you know what I mean. Also it shows that not much has changed. Time will tell. 4) He got played by the neocons and over-reacted about the embassy and made a tactical error with the best of intentions. If so poor judgement. 5) Israel did it and it was decided that the US took the credit in order to avert a direct and immediate Middle East war. Israel has had to deal with that asshole for some time and have everything to gain from this. If it was found that they did it they would be attacked on all sides. 6) This one is the scariest. One theory being proposed is what if Trump didn’t order it? If true or revealed it would show a rogue deep state that would risk world war. And Trump can’t be public about it or he looks inept and weak. Anyways my two cents and we certainly live in interesting times. Todd Email From Dean:Subject: Last Week’s EpisodeI can't tell you how disappointed I am and I'm only halfway through last week's episode. I expect to hear this on the CBC but I never expected to hear this from you. Calling President Trump an a******? Whining about them killing a terrorist that is organized militias in five different countries to kill either Americans or other Muslims. The same guy that organized militias in Iraq taught them to make IEDs that resulted in the killing of over six hundred Americans. In just the week prior they killed an American and organized an attack on the US embassy. They finally get this guy out in the open with nobody around, in Iraq mind you, and pull the trigger to take him out and you guys whine because you're so afraid there might be retaliation from the largest state sponsor of terrorism in the world. How many punches do you take in the face before you punch back? Maybe you think the Obama doctrine was working. Maybe send them more pallets of cash? Or maybe the US should have retaliated by hitting a couple of refineries and killing the guys that are sweeping the floor on night shift. And now that there isn't going to be a war, and the strategy worked, are you guys going to talk on your show this week about how wrong you were? I'm only so disappointed because I like you guys so much. I never expected you to side with the shrill left and start talking about how assassinations are just wrong. A strong deterrence is a way to stay out of war not a way to start wars and it worked this time. Sort yourselves out and be better. All the best, Dean Patreon and fan of the show Subject: Holy Shit Part Two Still listening to last week's episode. You actually sound like an Iranian sympathizer. I quote, "Iran is rightfully pissed?! I quote they throw gays off of buildings maybe that's right or wrong but at least there is serious country?! Did you get dropped on your head? hopefully this was just a bad night, because honestly this shity conversation is going to be on the internet forever. BTW- hizbollah is Shia. Without the US we'd all be speaking either Russian or German. Actually most likely Russian. They are our best friends and they would do anything for us. I'm so sick of listening to people bash the United States. Once again grip yourself, you're wrong. I don't know where you come from but where I come from we support our friends. you all sound like a bunch of scared school girls. PS now you're talking about how you're supporting the NDP. Dude, the wheels fell off the wagon. Best regards, Dean Fan and Patreon Outro Taccom TACCOM Canada 2020 - Sept 11-13. The Canadian Pro-Gun Podcasters Network will be in attendance at TACCOM 2020. But then, the most technologically advanced aircraft of its time was shut down by the government of the day, and the completed planes and equipment were ordered destroyed. Conspiracy theories abound but the repercussions of the move are still felt by many today. Now a group of Avro enthusiasts are bringing the jet, or a version of it, back to life. He also established Canada's first undergraduate and graduate courses in computing, and he worked on the design of the Avro Arrow and the St. Lawrence Seaway. This episode of Planet Artsci is an excerpt from an interview with Gotlieb from 2015.
