Born and raised in Houston, Texas during the oil boom years of the sixties and seventies, Bill Hawkins began working at age 12. Through his high school years, he worked as a machinist, painter, roofer, hardware store clerk, carpenter, sheet metal worker, and mechanic at a motorcycle salvage yard. He met interesting people, including drug dealers, bikers, a world-class physicist, a CIA field operative, a guy with a machete scar across his face, and an English teacher named Dell Gunter. When he wasn’t working, Bill was playing ball, working on cars, building things in his father’s shop, writing in the journal that Dell Gunter insisted he keep or reading Bradbury, Forsyth, Tolkien, Tolstoy, or Solzhenitsyn. Gunter nudged Bill to pursue his dream of writing, but his life took a different course when he accepted a scholarship to Texas A&M to study electrical engineering. After graduating with degrees in Broadcast Management and Anthropology, Bill picked up a camera to make a living as a freelance photographer. One thing led to another and with his natural drive to write and entertain Bill began to sell DIY articles with a humorous twist to Shutterbug and Handguns Magazine. Bill’s long and twisted path took him into the tech industry, and eventually back to his love of the written word where he insists that he will succeed or die trying. Bill has written five screenplays, six novels, and two novellas. ABOUT Armed To The Dentures Six heavily armed, elderly women, what could possibly go wrong? Swindled of their life savings by their retirement home manager, the ladies of the 4 o’clock poker club are destitute and off the grid. Violet, Marybeth, Mini, Doris, Ruby, and Bernice retire to an abandoned farm. How long can the fragile peace last, with all those years of experience demanding to be unleashed? Each with a full life of success and hardship behind them, the ladies are, to a woman, determined not to be a burden on anyone. But when the FBI fails to retrieve their savings, the reality of dying poor crashes in on them, and desperation and anger push them inexorably toward a life of crime. A direction that not all of them are strangers to. “What happens when five ‘golden years’ escapees set out with a hundred thousand dollars and a rental car on a tropical island? Great fun, that’s what! Hawkins’s tenderness for his characters enriches the wit and wisdom of these golden gals on their high-spirited adventure.” – Barbara Kyle, bestselling author of the Thornleigh Saga novels. I've dubbed this interview and series, Microsoft's Season of Change and Transformation. This is the first interview in a series to help the partner community best engage with the technology giant as it evolves it's partner business to better serve partners and customers. As most of you know, Microsoft announced a major reorganization to it's customer and partner - facing business in early July which included the formation of a "One Commercial Partner" or OCP organization. This included three key elements - "Build With", "Go to Market", and "Sell With"*. *In an earlier episode, Bill Hawkins helped decode the announcements for our listeners in greater detail and you can listen to this Episode 18 as a primer. With Microsoft summer and implementation still underway, I thought it would be good to walk our partners down the hallways of Bellevue and Redmond and "peel back" through interviews with partner leaders on how to best align and engage with Microsoft at this critical season. My guest for this interview episode is Eric Loper. Eric leads a "Build With" organization of partner business development managers focused on growing competencies, capabilities and capacity with Microsoft's top partners in the United States. This is a second or " encore" interview episode with for Eric. If you listened to Episode 2 of the Ultimate Guide to Partnering you will remember Eric as my very first interview guest. At the time Eric and I had a great discussion and he shared with partner listeners the essential elements of partnering, his observations on technology trends and recommendations on how to best engage with the technology giant. You can listen to that episode here. For this interview episode, Eric updates us on how the changes are positively impacting his organization, the renewed excitement and energy around partners, how both partners and partner sellers now need to think and act, and the increased investments in growing the business with and through partners. A full transcript of the interview is below in the show notes. If you have not listened to the podcast, now is your chance by going to iTunes , Google Play, Player FM, other Android podcast players or by going to my website “Ultimate Guide to Partnering“. You can also review this podcast by going to iTunes and searching “Ultimate Guide to Partnering” and clicking on the album art and hitting the ratings tab. This helps others find the podcast. You can also follow and like on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn. Thank you for following and listening. Vince Menzione Transcript of our interview. Eric, welcome back to the podcast. It is so great to have you back for this encore episode and to update our listeners on you and the business. You were my very first interview guest about 25 episodes ago. Boy, have we come a long way since then. At the time, you had a fairly small team, focused strictly on the National Solution Provider Program, and your organization was nested in the US business underneath the S&S&P team. Flash forward six months now, all of that is changed, and I'm super excited to have you here, and hear from you about the changes. The charge in the energy in Bellevue and RedMon right now. So, tell our listeners a little bit about what's happening. Eric Loper:                       Awesome. Well, first of all, thanks for having me. It's always good to have a chance to catch up. By the way, I listened to some of your conversation with Bill Hawkins the other day. I thought that he did a great job. I took away some things from that and excited that you continue to deliver something that's pretty cool for our partner community. Vince Menzione:             Thank you. So tell us, how is the charge in energy in Bellevue right now? Eric Loper:                       I think there's a ton of excitement. We're in a place right now where we are seeing great investment. Some of that is really recognizing the opportunity this year in the US.

I recently returned from an amazing week in Washington DC where I had the opportunity to present to partners on "how to take their Microsoft relationship to the next level", visit many old friends and meet new friends. I also received some amazing feedback on Ultimate Guide to Partnering. This is an important time at Microsoft and partners need to better understand how the changes will impact their business and engagement with the tech giant. I asked a voice of the Microsoft partner field to help me take our listeners through the changes - what it means to partners and how this ultimately translates into action in the days ahead. In this latest episode of the podcast I was joined by Bill Hawkins from Microsoft's One Commercial Partner or OCP organization to share his thoughts on the changes, how they will impact partners and how partner sellers will engage to drive partner success in FY18. In the discussion Bill pointed to an overarching theme - the right resource, engaging with the right partner, at the right time. We discuss exactly what has changed. The slide below provides an overview of the roles and motions and we go through each element in more detail on the podcast. We touch on the shift in compensation to better align sellers to the consumption model versus the transaction. Everyone in the field will be pivoting harder in this regard. More details on incentives plans will follow as changes roll out to the segments. They have not been released as of the date of this podcast to individuals in the Microsoft organization. Toni Townes Whitley discussed the shift to "industry focused - partner powered" which is fundamental and allow for da eeper and more focused engagement by Microsoft sellers with partners into a given customer's business. The 6 verticals are: 1. Financial Services 2. Manufacturing 3. Retail 4. Education 5. Health - 430 accounts, roughly $2B. 6. Government We conclude here that it's a great time to be a partner! Satya's announced 4 key solution areas for the business during his Monday keynote - its important to note that these are not stove-piped business silos, but interdependent solution sets: 1. Modern Workplace & introduced MICROSOFT 365 2. Business Applications - including DYNAMICS 365 3. Applications & Infrastructure - 4. Data and AI In the days ahead, I'll be asking leaders from Redmond and elsewhere to join the podcast and share more details on how these changes translate into success for partners. Now more than any time - its important that Redmond have a persistent channel and message to partners and field sellers on how to drive the change to effect mutual success. I'm happy to be a conduit at scale through Ultimate Guide to Partnering. I hope you enjoy this episode. I've really enjoyed the experience of setting up and doing a podcast. It has allowed me to develop new skills like learning to build and host a website using WordPress and I've had the opportunity to reconnect with some old friends. This week marks the 10th episode and I appreciate the listeners and followers who supported my concept and passion for disruptive technology and partnering. Technology is advancing so quickly today. Gone are the days of the 3-year product release cycle as technology giants like Microsoft, Amazon, Google release products and services weekly across a myriad of technologies associated with cloud computing, productivity, mobility, artificial intelligence, machine learning, IoT and the like...its all advancing so quickly. As I’ve spoken with technology leaders, former colleagues and industry partners – I’ve learned two critical things about the current state of the “art and science of partnering”. First, technology giants like Microsoft, AWS and Google - despite the size of their organizations struggle to scale their compelling technologies "broadly" to what they hope is a growing set of partners. Secondly, partners that sell, deploy or build upon these technologies feel they need to stay in greater “lock step” and aligned with the technology and the organizations. Existing readiness models - industry newsletters, blog posts, webinars, partner conferences and technology briefings are all still incredibly valuable. What I’ve tried to achieve through this podcast format and interviews is easy access to useful and actionable information – that you can listen to when you want and where you want. It's like walking the hallways of Microsoft and other tech giants - to connect, innovate and align for success – on your terms. I ask questions that don't normally get asked and bring a behind the scenes viewpoint to each episode. I deconstruct strategies through questions. I’m also a connector at heart and have always believed in the business principle of "one plus one equals three or more" – which is something I learned over 20 years ago from Steven Covey's 7 habits of Highly Effective People. This podcast is what I refer to as "Connection at Scale" and in the coming weeks and months I hope to continue to evolve the format to bring a broader range of business leaders to the podcast. I’ve really enjoyed listening again to the previous interviews on how to best engage with various aspects of Microsoft's US Partner business*. Eric Loper was the first interview guest and discussed the National Solution Provider Program - Microsoft's premier and elite program for the top 35 partners in the US. William Lewallen who leads Cloud Solution Providers in the US talked about this rapidly growing program and how partners can ramp up. Stephanie Martin joined recently to outline the Partner Seller Program and how to engage with the Microsoft field. I’ve also been fortunate to be joined by my old team - Tom O'Neil, Bill Hawkins and Mike Batt each shared the incredible opportunities for partners working in Education, Healthcare and Government. Helping partners to grow by learning from other partners success is also a goal, and my first partner guest Tony Safoian tells an incredible story of how he took a small family run IT shop and grew it to a premier partner to Microsoft, Google and Facebook - all while minimizing business and sales conflicts one might expect from competing business practices. I've also stepped outside the traditional partner bounds and featured Microsoft’s Government team - with Jonathan Friebert's call to partners to help shape and drive government policies supporting digital privacy and computer literacy. Key themes from the first interview episodes are: Transformation is happening fast and advanced partners have found new models and are evolving their business models quickly - other partners need to get on board. Partner often struggle and fight the business transformation and moving their ...

The "Digital Transformation" is having a profound effect across healthcare. Companies like Microsoft are advancing their investments in the Healthcare IT market to meet the growing demand. Specific areas of focus include: patient care, empowering care teams, optimizing operational effectiveness and transforming the care continuum. Gartner reports, "digital healthcare is propelling spending in enhancing core automation systems such as various health information systems and other associated technologies such as information exchanges and analytics that help derive meaningful use from these core systems." The opportunity in healthcare for partners is immense,  so I asked a former colleague Bill Hawkins to guide our audience of listeners through it. Bill Hawkins is Microsoft's Partner Lead for US Healthcare, where he is responsible for setting the strategy for partners engaging with Microsoft's field sales organization focused on US Healthcare. His work is focused on the company's Core Priorities and driving mutually beneficial outcomes. Bill works closely with partners across the healthcare ecosystem to accelerate their growth, solve for customer's business needs, and continuously search for innovative solutions. In the first portion of the interview Bill outlines the transformation going on in the Healthcare business and the role of IT Solution Partners in solving for these issues and areas. Specifically we discuss the shift from "healthcare enterprise" to a "consumer-focus" and "outcomes focused" model. This shift creates massive amounts of data. Managing, securing, sharing and protecting the data is key to improving and ensuring the best possible patient outcomes. This is the new reality. As the conversation advances, we peel back on the opportunity for partners and focus on Microsoft's technologies and properties that help drive these outcomes. Listeners can go to Microsoft's Healthcare page here to learn more about Microsoft's Health Vision and focus areas, view case studies and read timely blog posts. The Healthcare team will also be engaging with partners at Microsoft's Annual Partner Conference, formerly know as Worldwide Partner Conference and now call Microsoft Inspire - July 9th - 13th in Washington, DC. As I do with each of the podcasts, I focused the last segment of our interview on Bill's career and professional journey. Bill shared some of his philosophy and we had a great discussion about one of his role models, John Wooden. One of Bill's favorite books on Wooden is Wooden by Coach John Wooden with Steve Jamison. And Bill talked about John Wooden's Pyramid of Success, which you can download in PDF format here. After the interview Bill recommended another book for our listeners David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell. Bill can be reached at: billhawk@microsoft.com. I hope you enjoy this episode and please “like” this Podcast on iTunes and Facebook . To rate and review this podcast, this link shows you how to do it. LINK

In 1948, Bill Hawkins became Cleveland’s first black disc jockey. He had a jiving, rhyming style. People gathered on the street to watch him broadcast from a glass booth at the front of his record store. His popularity grew rapidly. Over the next decade Hawkins was heard on up to four different stations on the same day. He had plenty of imitators and influenced a whole generation of DJs. Hawkins also had something else – a son he never knew. William Allen Taylor didn’t find out Hawkins was his father until he graduated from college. The two met once when Taylor was a teenager. At the time, Hawkins never hinted at who he was. And Taylor had no idea that he had met his father. Hawkins died before his son got to know him. There are no known tapes of Hawkins. Taylor became an actor and playwright. He lives in San Francisco. But he’s always wished he had a recording of his father’s radio program or even just a snippet of his voice.
