I grew up just outside of Manhattan, an idyllic suburb that I couldn't wait to move away from. I attended Manhattan College in Riverdale, NY and I studied psychology. In 2003, I got hit with the wanderlust arrow when I studied abroad in Granada, Spain. That experience changed my life. Sage Jaurequi of Hispanic descent received his BA at Arizona State University in Family Studies and Human Development and Masters Degree in Marital and Family Therapy from Alliant University in San Diego. Sage knew he was different and was ashamed of being different because he was met with so much disapproval. He had no interest in sports loved to play with dolls and received emotional and physical abuse from his older brother. Sage's mother decided to put him into therapy. This was the first time he admitted to the therapist or to anyone that he was gay. It took so much courage for him to do this but for the first time he felt he had owned who he was. Sage also later came out to his mother when he was 14 years old and she struggled with it, but came to accept it. When Sage finally got into high school he was able to find an accepting community of others who were gay. Because of the Hispanic community, it is harder to come out and Sage realized the importance of having a community; all races who accept you for who you are. When Sage became a flight attendant, he was able to meet others from the gay community who supported him. Sage found out that he need to find out the history of his hispanic ancestors because this is part of who you are. He encourages all individuals to find out the history of their ancestors. You will find out in this podcast the history of “marginalized “individuals and how they can have the strength and courage to get through it.

Mind Full of Everything
Reimagining environmentalism through the motherhood lens with Dr Allison Davis

Mind Full of Everything

Our modern dominant cultures for too long have trivialised motherhood experiences and practices, jeopardising the wellbeing and safety of mothers as they undergo various emotional, physical, social and mental challenges that come with transitioning to motherhood. As like any other social figure, and individual, mothers deserve respect, support and care by systems of power and society, but since most cultures assign the role of the primary care giver to mothers, the urgency to provide holistic maternal support is strengthening for a world which is becoming increasingly volatile. In this episode, we are joined by Dr Allison Davis to share with us her deepened understanding of the role that mothers play as environmental stewards, due to their standpoint in the world, and the need for mothers to reimagine motherhood for themselves for sustained personal and planetary health. Dr. Allison Davis is a researcher, writer, counselor, and educator of maternal mental health. With an ecofeminist-informed, strength-based developmental framework she helps mothers challenge and reenvision motherhood norms and practices in pursuit of personal and planetary wellness. Her upcoming book The 6 Initiations of Earth-Honoring Motherhood: A Nature-Guided Rite-of-Passage for New Mothers weaves together modern research and ancient wisdom to help new mothers root into who they are and who they are becoming. Allison is in private practice in New Mexico where she specializes in trauma resolution through nature-centered expressive therapies. She's also affiliate faculty at Alliant University where she teaches in the Masters of Clinical Counseling Program. As a writer Allison explores “mother praxis” the possibility of a dynamic interplay between the theory and practice of mothering as mothers can reflect on harmful structures while also finding liberatory ways to work with and through them. As a researcher she focuses on bringing an applied psychoecological lens to maternal mental health, investigating how mothering in a time where we're increasingly aware of humanity's ecocidal behavior has profound implications for maternal mental health andhow we can create structures to support mothers within this experience. Mothers outside of New Mexico can work with Allison through her support sessions to explore the growth and growing pains within motherhood as an ecological awakening. She also offers consultation to mother-supporting professionals and organizations who want to attune to ecological interactions in understanding maternal mental health as well as health care delivery. You can learn more by visiting her at www.motherpraxis.com and following her Instagram page @motherpraxis. Find the episode show notes, transcripts and resources at mindfullofeverything.com.

We may recognise, acknowledge, and seek to explore biological, psychological, and sociological dimensions that are involved in the transition to motherhood and experience of being a mother – but what about the ‘environmental'? Our environment and our relationship to the natural world is a critical lens through which we can interpret, explore, and understand our experience of Motherhood. This conversation is with Dr Allison Davis, a researcher, writer, counselor, and educator of maternal mental health. With an ecofeminist-informed, strength-based developmental framework she helps mothers challenge and reenvision motherhood norms and practices in pursuit of personal and planetary wellness. She's also affiliate faculty at Alliant University where she teaches in the Masters of Clinical Counseling Program. Allison explores ‘mother praxis', which is the possibility of a dynamic interplay between the THEORY and the PRACTICE of mothering, and in this conversation we explore what it means to bring in the environment through eco-therapy as a way of thinking about motherhood, and supporting Mothers. Allison invites us to consider a new way of thinking about the ‘motherwound' through our attachment to nature, and we reflect on the ways our children can open up possibility for our own ecological awakening. . . . I think mostly everyone wants to be fit and healthy--it's the hard work that goes into it that makes it tough. Being a former athlete and a married man, I like to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle for myself but also to still be attractive to my wife. Is she going to leave me if I let myself go and get out of shape? Probably not. But I'd be lying if I said it didn't make me feel good when my wife checks me out and compliments me when I'm standing around naked at home... which is about 97% of the time. Although my wife is a small motivating factor behind why I like to stay fit and healthy, I also do it for myself because I want to reach the latter years of my life and hopefully still be able to be mobile and do some of the things I love to do... and I've got a little vanity, too. I admit it. Do you like to stay fit? Eat healthy? Why? Do you do it for yourself or do you do it for someone else? Do you do it because our society says that you're supposed to look a certain way? Finding out the answer to this question can be just as important as finding out what workout routine or what nutrition plan is the best for you. So many of us fall into the trap of achieving that "perfect" body that has us doing things--whether physically, mentally or nutritionally--that are doing us much more harm than they are good. Join me as I sit down with Sandra Avila (SAvila@Alliant.edu)to discuss an issue that is a lot more prevalent than you may realize: men with eating disorders. Sandra is a Clinical Psychology Doctoral candidate at Alliant University where she recently penned and defended her dissertation project titled "Disordered Eating in Males: An Unrecognized Health Crisis" which we dive into and discuss thoroughly. In her dissertation, she discusses what eating disorders in men can look like and investigates the factors that may cause them, as well as the factors that keep men from seeking help. Her goal is to help healthcare providers be able to better identify disordered eating in men and to validate their experiences in hopes of normalizing their emotional suffer gin and motivate them to take that critical first step in their healing process. This one was very informative and eye opening.

EFT is a short-term and structured therapeutic approach, which teaches couples how to change negative communication patterns so they can feel closer and more connected to each other. The emerging research on neuroscience validates the importance of healthy attachments. When there is a breakdown in our relationships, our brains interpret this as danger, which leads to a fight-or-flight response. EFT seeks to help a couple bond and become a secure base for each other. Dr. Sue Johnson on Twitter: @Dr_SueJohnson
