Mike Batt is probably best known as the singer/songwriter/producer of The Wombles music, having written the theme tune plus eight hit singles and four gold albums. Mike moved on to work with various artists as a songwriter and producer, most successfully with Steeleye Span and their most successful single and album All Around My Hat in 1975. He wrote the song "Bright Eyes" for the film Watership Down, sung by Art Garfunkel, which reached number 1 in the UK Singles Chart and five other countries. Mike wrote and produced three more UK Top Ten hits, "Please Don't Fall in Love" (for Cliff Richard), "A Winter's Tale" (for David Essex, with lyrics co-written by Tim Rice) and "I Feel Like Buddy Holly" (for Alvin Stardust). Mike composed and produced the four million-selling album, The Violin Player, which launched classical violinist Vanessa-Mae, and he discovered Katie Melua in 2002. Her album Call Off The Search (containing six of Mike's songs including "The Closest Thing to Crazy") was released in November 2003. It spent six weeks at number one in the UK Albums Chart, sold over 1.8 million copies, in the UK and three million copies in total, making Melua the biggest selling UK female artist of 2004. Mike Batt in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.mikebatt.com/ https://www.amazon.co.uk/Closest-Thing-Crazy-Musical-Adventures/dp/1785120840 Described variously as a 'polymath', a 'renaissance man' and 'one of the most colourful characters in the music business', Mike Batt has led an extraordinarily vibrant and challenging life that has been full of both glorious victories and bitter failures. For better or for worse, he is a man who has always lived life on his own terms. Idiosyncratic but mainstream, complicated but compassionate, steadfastly maverick in spirit but avowedly commercial in outlook. He is a man of great contradictions, but even greater talent. After starting out in the music business as a teenager, Batt shot to fame in the early 1970s for his part in the creation of the Wombles pop group. But this success proved to be just the beginning as he then went on to work with various artists as a songwriter, composer and producer, including Art Garfunkel, George Harrison, Cliff Richard, Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Katie Melua. Featuring cameos from some of the biggest stars in the business from Paul McCartney to Prince, The Closest Thing to Crazy takes us not only on the rocky (and classical) journey of Mike Batt's life but also on a tour around the inside of his mind.
Mike Batt still wrestles with the emotional legacy of the Wombles, the act that simultaneously made him and cast a shadow over the rest of his career, not least his early days as a songwriter at Liberty Records, discussed here, hired after he'd answered the same ad as Elton John and Bernie Taupin, a time when A&R men wore kipper ties and had Picassos on their wall. He forged a path through psychedelia and into TV and films, taking huge financial risks with musicals, orchestral works and big-selling acts like Katie Melua, his Art Garfunkel hit ‘Bright Eyes' eventually promoting him from the Haves to the Have-Yachts. All sorts discussed here including ... … his brief satin-jacketed tenure in Hapshash & the Coloured Coat. … parallels between record producers and traffic cops. … Happy Jack and songs about outsiders. … being in Savile Row when the Beatles played the Apple roof. … life as “a square” during psychedelia. … a snatch of abandoned teenage composition ‘The Man With The Purple Hand'. … John D. Laudermilk and the magic of writing credits. … how Bright Eyes “got me into the Officers' Mess of Songwriters”. … his publishers insisting there was a Womble on the book jacket. … “circumcising” the world in a seven-crew yacht. ... and feeling simultaneously smug and guilty when driving a Roller. Watership Down is an adventure novel by English author Richard Adams, published by Rex Collings Ltd of London in 1972. Set in Hampshire in southern England, the story features a small group of rabbits. Although they live in their natural wild environment, with burrows, they are anthropomorphised, possessing their own culture, language, proverbs, poetry, and mythology. Evoking epic themes, the novel follows the rabbits as they escape the destruction of their warren and seek a place to establish a new home (the hill of Watership Down), encountering perils and temptations along the way. Watership Down was Richard Adams' debut novel. It was rejected by several publishers before Collings accepted the manuscript; the published book then won the annual Carnegie Medal (UK), annual Guardian Prize (UK), and other book awards. The novel was adapted into an animated feature film in 1978 and, from 1999 to 2001, an animated children's television series. In 2018, a drama of the story was made, which both aired in the UK and was made available on Netflix. Adams completed a sequel almost 25 years later, in 1996, Tales from Watership Down, constructed as a collection of 19 short stories about El-ahrairah and the rabbits of the Watership Down warren. Watership Down is a 1978 British animated adventure-drama film, written, produced and directed by Martin Rosen and based on the 1972 novel by Richard Adams. It was financed by a consortium of British financial institutions and was distributed by Cinema International Corporation in the United Kingdom. Released on 19 October 1978, the film was an immediate success and it became the sixth-most popular film of 1979 at the UK box office. It features the voices of John Hurt, Richard Briers, Harry Andrews, Simon Cadell, Nigel Hawthorne and Roy Kinnear, among others, and was the last film work of Zero Mostel, as the voice of Kehaar the gull. The musical score was by Angela Morley and Malcolm Williamson. Art Garfunkel's hit song "Bright Eyes" was written by songwriter Mike Batt. It has garnered a cult following. Our eighteenth episode is a chat with Mike Batt - singer, songwriter, composer, arranger, you name it... We talk Art Garfunkel, Harry Nillson, Katie Melua - and we even get an impromptu performance from the man himself.
Guitarist/Singer/Songwriter Chris Spedding has been a mainstay of the British session scene since the late 60s, playing with just about everyone from Nucleus, Jack Bruce, John Cale, Elton John, Mike Batt, to Paul McCartney & The Bay City Rollers (anonymously!). In 1975 Spedding had a hit record called "Motorbikin'". In the late 70s he moved to the States and worked with Robert Gordon, Jerry Harrison, Dick Rivers and Johnny Hallyday. Since 2001, Spedding has been playing live with Roxy Music/Bryan Ferry, The War Of The World and R.Gordon / D.Rivers, Herbie Flowers, Charlotte Glasson among others. In 2011, put out solo album "Pearls" and formed a legendary band called King Mob with Steve Parsons, Sixteen, Glen Matlock and Martin Chamnbers, but was short-lived unfortunately. In 2015, he released his 13th original studio album "Joyland". On 29th June 2018, he had the 50th Anniversary Concert in London and this show came out. Still he is playing with Bryan Ferry, Robert Gordon and The War Of The World worldwide. Today he gets the SMOKE EM IF YOU GOT EM treatment. YT VIDEO PLAYLIST
Bonnie Tyler, born Gaynor Hopkins, was brought up in Skewen, a small village near Swansea. She grew up to become one of Wales' best known performers, achieving chart success all over the world. She is recognised for her distinctive husky voice, and a long list of hit singles including Total Eclipse of the Heart, It's a Heartache, Holding Out for a Hero, Lost in France, More Than a Lover, Bitterblue and If I Sing You a Love Song. In her 50-year career, Bonnie has performed for audiences in countries across the world, and she has enjoyed critical acclaim for her recent albums Rocks and Honey and Between The Earth and the Stars. Her latest album The Best Is Yet to Come – due for release on 26 February 2021 – is a contemporary approach to the sounds and styles of 80s pop rock. As a teenager, Bonnie was influenced by the biggest female voices of the 60s, especially Tina Turner and Janis Joplin. After spending several years performing in local pubs and clubs around South Wales, first with Bobbie Wayne & the Dixies and later with her own band, Imagination, Bonnie was discovered by talent scout Roger Bell in 1974. RCA Records launched Bonnie's recording career two years later with her debut single My! My! Honeycomb. Her breakthrough hit was Lost in France, written by her managers Ronnie Scott and Steve Wolfe. The single peaked at no. 9 in the UK, and spent six months in the German charts. After enjoying further success with subsequent singles More Than a Lover and Heaven, Bonnie finally broke into the Billboard charts with It's a Heartache, which reached no. 3 in the United States. Of the four albums that Bonnie recorded for RCA, Natural Force was the most successful, selling over half a million copies in the United States. Ready to embrace the new decade, Bonnie moved to CBS Records to work with Jim Steinman in the early 80s. Their fateful collaboration resulted in the groundbreaking international hit Total Eclipse of the Heart, a multi-platinum selling single that still enjoys cultural relevance in the 21st century. It is lifted from her fifth album, Faster Than the Speed of Night, which saw Tyler become to first British female artist to make her debut appearance on the UK Albums Chart at no. 1. During the 80s, she recorded several songs for movie soundtracks, including the UK no. 2 hit Holding Out for a Hero for Footloose, and the Grammy-nominated single Here She Comes for a restoration of Metropolis. Hide Your Heart became Bonnie's third album for CBS, produced by Desmond Child. It features several songs that became hits for other artists, including The Best for Tina Turner and Save Up All Your Tears for Cher. In the 90s, Bonnie signed with German label Hansa Records for three albums. The first, Bitterblue, rivaled the success of her career-defining album Faster Than the Speed of Night in some European countries, earning 4x Platinum status in Norway. Her follow-up albums Angel Heart and Silhouette in Red also became Platinum records in parts of Europe. Bonnie reunited with Jim Steinman in 1995 after signing with EastWest Records. She recorded epic cover versions of Making Love (Out of Nothing At All) and Two Out of Three Ain't Bad for her album Free Spirit, which featured the work of top producers including Humberto Gatica, Christopher Neil and David Foster. Her second record with EastWest, titled All in One Voice, arrived shortly before the new milennium. The celtic-influenced pop album was recorded in Dublin and Hamburg, and features a haunting cover of “I Put a Spell on You”, produced by Mike Batt. In the early 2000s, Bonnie signed a one-off deal with EMI to record Heart Strings, an album of classic rock covers featuring her touring band and the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. Bonnie recorded her next two pop-rock albums, Simply Believe and Wings, with producers Jean Lahcene and Stuart Emerson. Bonnie received an ECHO Music Prize for ‘Best International Pop/Rock Female Artist' in 1994. She has also received three Goldene Europa awards, three Grammy and BRIT nominations, two AMA nominations and one ACM nomination. She is the recipient of an honorary degree from Swansea University, and she was presented with a Gold Badge from BASCA (now The Ivors Academy) in 2013. Bonnie has represented the United Kingdom at two international music contests. In 1979, she won the Yamaha World Popular Song Festival with her song ‘Sitting On the Edge of the Ocean'. After competing in the Eurovision Song Contest with ‘Believe in Me' in 2013, Bonnie picked up two ESC Radio Awards for ‘Best Song' and ‘Best Singer'. Over and above the timeless tracks that made her a household name, Bonnie has proven her versatility by enjoying a bilingual number one album in France, and performing duets – past collaborators include Vince Gill, Cher, Fabio Jr., Shakin' Stevens and Todd Rundgren. In 2013, she released her country-influenced album Rocks and Honey, recorded at the legendary Blackbird Studios in Nashville with David Huff. In 2019, she released Between the Earth and the Stars, another contemporary record with nods to past moments from her 50-year career. She recorded it with David Mackay, who produced her first two albums back in the 70s. Songwriters include long-time collaborators Kevin Dunne, Brian Cadd and Stuart Emerson, with new contributions from Sir Barry Gibb and Amy Wadge. The album also boasts three exciting duets with Rod Stewart, Cliff Richard and Francis Rossi. Her follow-up album The Best Is Yet to Come will arrive in February 2021. The release was pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but now Bonnie feels ready to celebrate: “I hope these new songs will lift your spirits. I am so happy and proud of this new album. It simply rocks and brings a smile to my face every time I put it on. The moment we can get back on stage and see your smiling faces will be extra special. I promise the best IS yet to come.“

Welcome to The Head Ballet podcast! Paul Abbott invites guests to discuss their favourite novelty songs. To round out the Christmas Novelty Offerings for this year, voice-actor, musician and impressionist Darrell Maclaine treats us to a No.2 hit from 1974 that's emerged from a burrow on Wimbledon Common and realised by producer/songwriter supremo Mike Batt - it's Wombling Merry Christmas! This will be the last episode until Season 2 comes along some time in the new year, so until then, thank you for your support! Happy New Year!
It's getting close to the big day on the podcast this week, as we examine the UK charts of 15 December 1983, and somehow manage to end up taking about racist comedians, the naked balloon dance and Mike Batt's AC/DC tribute band.
I believe in being highly topical and globally relevant, and my this week’s MARY GOSTELOW GIRLAHEAD PODCAST chat is just that. As boss of New York-based Internova, Mike Batt represents over 50,000 top travel advisors. He is one of the main movers in the new verification, for suppliers worldwide, to give consumers confidence in today’s travel.
Singer-songwriter Katie Melua talks with Simon and Brian about the writing of her absorbing new record Album No. 8. During the conversation, Katie also reflects on her collaborations with the likes of Mike Batt, Guy Chambers, Don Black and Sam Dixon, and explains why she has been on a mission to research lyric writing.
We had the pleasure of interviewing Katie Melua over Zoom! One remarkable Georgian-British singer-songwriter defines who Ketevan Melua, also known as Katie Melua, really is in the scene of music. As early as the age of eight, she moved to the United Kingdom then, later on, moved to London. To pursue her passion for music, she was initially signed by Dramatico, a small record label handled and managed by the famous composer, Mike Batt. It was the year 2003 when she first recorded and released her music. Three years later, she garnered the title of Europe’s highest-selling female artist and United Kingdom’s best selling female artist. A lot of opportunities surely swept Katie Melua off of her feet but with the talent she possesses, she deserved every award and every record released. When Katie Melua was 19, it was when she had the chance to release her first album entitled Call Off the Search selling over 1.8 million copies from the first five months since the day it was released. In 2005, Piece by Piece, her second album, was released and went platinum. Considering her flourishing fame, she kept on feeding her fans with new music in which in 2007, she released her third album, Pictures, and was successful in terms of sales and reviews. Being coined as one of Britain’s most successful artists is beyond reasonable for Katie Melua. With 56 platinum awards received since the age of 19, it only explains her innate talent and creativity in making and performing music. https://open.spotify.com/artist/5uCXJWo3WoXgqv3T1RlAbhhttps://twitter.com/katiemeluaKatiemelua.comhttps://www.facebook.com/katiemeluamusic/https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeZI3rELje_CcLaZmXnsrwgWe want to hear from you! I've really enjoyed the experience of setting up and doing a podcast. It has allowed me to develop new skills like learning to build and host a website using WordPress and I've had the opportunity to reconnect with some old friends. This week marks the 10th episode and I appreciate the listeners and followers who supported my concept and passion for disruptive technology and partnering. Technology is advancing so quickly today. Gone are the days of the 3-year product release cycle as technology giants like Microsoft, Amazon, Google release products and services weekly across a myriad of technologies associated with cloud computing, productivity, mobility, artificial intelligence, machine learning, IoT and the like...its all advancing so quickly. As I’ve spoken with technology leaders, former colleagues and industry partners – I’ve learned two critical things about the current state of the “art and science of partnering”. First, technology giants like Microsoft, AWS and Google - despite the size of their organizations struggle to scale their compelling technologies "broadly" to what they hope is a growing set of partners. Secondly, partners that sell, deploy or build upon these technologies feel they need to stay in greater “lock step” and aligned with the technology and the organizations. Existing readiness models - industry newsletters, blog posts, webinars, partner conferences and technology briefings are all still incredibly valuable. What I’ve tried to achieve through this podcast format and interviews is easy access to useful and actionable information – that you can listen to when you want and where you want. It's like walking the hallways of Microsoft and other tech giants - to connect, innovate and align for success – on your terms. I ask questions that don't normally get asked and bring a behind the scenes viewpoint to each episode. I deconstruct strategies through questions. I’m also a connector at heart and have always believed in the business principle of "one plus one equals three or more" – which is something I learned over 20 years ago from Steven Covey's 7 habits of Highly Effective People. This podcast is what I refer to as "Connection at Scale" and in the coming weeks and months I hope to continue to evolve the format to bring a broader range of business leaders to the podcast. I’ve really enjoyed listening again to the previous interviews on how to best engage with various aspects of Microsoft's US Partner business*. Eric Loper was the first interview guest and discussed the National Solution Provider Program - Microsoft's premier and elite program for the top 35 partners in the US. William Lewallen who leads Cloud Solution Providers in the US talked about this rapidly growing program and how partners can ramp up. Stephanie Martin joined recently to outline the Partner Seller Program and how to engage with the Microsoft field. I’ve also been fortunate to be joined by my old team - Tom O'Neil, Bill Hawkins and Mike Batt each shared the incredible opportunities for partners working in Education, Healthcare and Government. Helping partners to grow by learning from other partners success is also a goal, and my first partner guest Tony Safoian tells an incredible story of how he took a small family run IT shop and grew it to a premier partner to Microsoft, Google and Facebook - all while minimizing business and sales conflicts one might expect from competing business practices. I've also stepped outside the traditional partner bounds and featured Microsoft’s Government team - with Jonathan Friebert's call to partners to help shape and drive government policies supporting digital privacy and computer literacy. Key themes from the first interview episodes are: Transformation is happening fast and advanced partners have found new models and are evolving their business models quickly - other partners need to get on board. Partner often struggle and fight the business transformation and moving their ...
Flashback three years to when a new CEO Satya Nadella is on stage making a commitment to invest hundreds of millions of dollars to build out a "Government Cloud" – Amazon has a head start and Microsoft was playing catch up. Fast forward to today, "what progress has the organization made to catch up and surpass the competition and what specific opportunities exist for partners in Government Cloud?" Michael Batt, Director of Government Partner Programs and a 21 year veteran of the company joined a recent episode of my podcast to discuss the important role partners play to growing Microsoft’s Government Cloud business. In my interview we discussed what differentiates Microsoft’s Government Cloud versus AWS, the attributes of partners that “got it right” working in the Government business at Microsoft, the opportunity that is being created by emerging Alliance partnerships with companies like Adobe and Citrix, and use case scenarios for partners to leverage IoT and Advanced Analytics to create new applications in government. Partners that are new to government procurement vehicles can best leverage other Microsoft partners that have opened up their contracts to allow other partners to sell a Microsoft cloud solution. Mike references a contracting vehicle that makes it easy for partners with little to no previous government contracting experience to engage. This contract US Communities Contract, is held by another Microsoft partner Insight. Partners looking to connect and partner in Government Cloud can reach Mike Batt at: mbatt@microsoft.com. As in each of my interviews, I devote a portion of our time to discuss my guests professional journey and useful information they can share. Mike recommended a book that he likes with our listners: This Used To Be Us: How America Fell Behind in the World It Invented and How We Can Come Back, by Thomas Friedman. If you have not listened to the podcast, now is your chance by going to iTunes , Google Play, Player FM, other Android podcast players or by going to my website “Ultimate Guide to Partnering“.
