In this installment, Jordan sits down with Brandi Collins-Dexter, author of Black Skinhead and host of the Bring Receipts podcast, for a riveting conversation about Ye, feminism, and the relationship between the Democratic party and Black Americans.
It takes a powerful amalgam of dynamics to produce a groundbreaking book. This is what Brandi Collins Dexter, lawyer, researcher, activist, and stand-out nonprofit advocate has achieved with the publication of Black Skinhead: Reflections on Blackness and Our Political Future. She takes on, with curiosity, deep personal investment, and an openness to views she may not share, the reasons for and consequences of the disillusionment of Black voters with the Democratic Party. This sensibility mirrors the rise of a multiracial skinhead movement in England, post-World War II that eventually devolved into racially divisive factions. Her interviews with 50 voters from 18-108, reveal an increasing unease with how the party represents Black interests and whether government can generate solutions to the impacts of the racial wealth gap, student debt and the toll of unlivable wages. Brandi explores how social media, rather than encouraging shared cultural and political aspirations, splinters community and fosters alienation. And she points to the danger of losing a belief in linked fate, as personified by Kanye West, whose identification with white nationalism poses a literal threat to democracy. Let's make this required reading for the nonprofit social change sector.
This episode features a discussion with Brandi Collins-Dexter, the author of the new book BLACK SKINHEAD: Reflections on Blackness and Our Political Future. Brandi is both an academic and a civil rights activist in the fight for media and tech justice, and her book is a rollercoaster ride through those issues through culture and music and politics. Part media and cultural criticism, part memoir, and part warning, the book takes us to the fringes of Black communities and tries to make sense of our political moment.
Also, hybrid work models show strain. While Ye (née Kanye West) continues to bring new meaning to his song Black Skinhead with a flurry of antisemitic remarks, Biglaw firms are being Heartless and leaving his stable of representation a Ghost Town. But are they Stronger for making the move? Meanwhile, work from home policies remain in their infancy, but firms are already frustrating associates with tweaks. Cravath's originally announced policy has added a wrinkle and Ropes & Gray has folks positively grumpy. How long will the growing pains last? We also discuss Slaughter & May's new late night policy, the challenges facing Magic Circle firms.

Author Brandi Collins-Dexter joins Zerlina on the show to discuss her new book BLACK SKINHEAD, out now!For fans of Bad Feminist and The Sum of Us, Black Skinhead sparks a radical conversation about Black America and political identity. In Black Skinhead, Brandi Collins-Dexter, former senior campaign manager for Color Of Change, explores the fragile alliance between Black voters and the Democratic Party. Through sharp, timely essays that span the political, cultural, and personal, Collins-Dexter reveals decades of simmering disaffection in Black America, told as much through voter statistics as through music, film, sports, and the baffling mind of Kanye West. While Black Skinhead is an outward look at Black votership and electoral politics, it is also a funny, deeply personal, and introspective look at the fragility of Black culture and identity, ultimately revealing a Black America that has become deeply disillusioned with the failed promises of its country.
In this bonus episode of Bring Receipts we give you a special preview of Brandi's upcoming book "Black Skinhead: Reflections on Blackness and our Political Future". We also discuss Kanye West's Katrina moment, Joe Biden's "You Aint Black" gaffe on The Breakfast Club, as well as the future of the Black vote. Live in New York City? The Century is 22 and our episode number is 22, featuring 2 of the usual 4 hosts! A rather laid-back episode, so take it easy with the boys on this one!In this episode, John and Paolo cover the recent endeavours of Pop Culture icons Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott, the Kardashians in general and the excellency of modern hip hop leaders. They then move into usual Aftermath Podcast film theorycrafting and analysis. Thought Kylie and Travis were still together? They've got a new kid on the way though right? What's going on? John has all the answers as Paolo asks the hard questions. The conversation then takes a rather insightful turn, we ask the question if Kim Kardashian devised the ultimate modern celebrity blueprint. Is part of that blueprint to deliver an actual product, or to deliver an aesthetic or vibe? Or are those two things part of one essential package the modern entertainment sphere demands? Perhaps Kanye knows… because one thing's for sure “Black Skinhead” went hard and changed the game. One game yet to change is America's juridical system that favours one of the parents during a split, if anyone's seen Noah Baumbach's Marriage Story, you'll know about this. It's one of the reasons we couldn't find ourselves supporting Kim alongside Kanye during the split, we even tried watching Keeping Up With The Kardashians to see if we could understand! In the end, the children suffer a lot from these splits, as if modern teens didn't have enough problems of their own. A viewing of HBO MAX and BINGE's Euphoria delivers that message in a surreal yet vivid way. What have you been watching? Do these issues cross your mind? Before Gesaffelstein would become one of the biggest names in electronic music, first in Europe, then the US, helped in large part by his extremely memorable performance at Coachella in 2019. Before Gesaffelstein would work with artists like Kanye West and The Weeknd on some of their biggest hit songs like “Black Skinhead” and “I Was Never There”. Before Gesaffelstein would remain largely a mysterious presence on social media has deleted his Twitter and Instagram profiles years ago and only maintaining his YouTube channel which has over 311K subscribers at the time of this recording. Gesaffelstein is a French DJ and electronic musician who produces industrial techno and electro music under a moniker that's meant to combine his passion for art with his fandom for science. That's right his name is a portmanteau of the German word “Gesamtkunstwerk”, which means “a total work of art”, along with the name of the world-famous scientist, Albert Einstein. Heavily influenced by early EBM acts like Nitzer Ebb and Front 242 as well as house producers like Green Velvet and Laurent Garnier, Gesaffelstein began injecting clubs in France with his sinister dose of darkness during the late 2000s. Over time, the man who would come to be known as the Dark Prince of Techno has built up a cult following that exploded in 2018. But throughout his career, Gesaffelstein's life has been shrouded in mystery.
We continue our track by track analysis of Yeezus with “Black Skinhead.” Produced by Daft Punk, “Black Skinhead” is our first indication that Yeezus has ambitions outside of his celebrity lifestyle of sex and money. He channels the spirit of Malcolm X to rally his troops to rebel against the systemic injustice he sees in society. But is anyone listening? The legendary dance duo has called it quits 28 years after forming in Paris Daft Punk, the Parisian duo responsible for some of the most popular dance and pop songs ever made, have split. They broke the news with an 8-minute video titled “Epilogue,” excerpted from their 2006 film Electroma. Asked if Daft Punk were no more, their longtime publicist Kathryn Frazier confirmed the news to Pitchfork but gave no reason for the breakup. Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo formed Daft Punk in Paris in 1993, helping to define the French touch style of house music. Their debut album, 1997's Homework, was a dance music landmark, featuring classic singles “Around the World” and “Da Funk.” By the release of its follow-up, Discovery, in 2001, the duo had taken to making public appearances in the robot outfits that became their trademark. The singles “One More Time” and “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” cemented them as global superstars. Their imprint in the popular imagination continued to deepen in subsequent years, with records including third album Human After All, live LP Alive 2007, and the Tron: Legacy soundtrack album. Twenty years into their career, Daft Punk blew up once more with “Get Lucky,” the lead single of their 2013 album Random Access Memories. The ubiquitous track sold millions of copies around the world and won two Grammys for the duo and guests Nile Rodgers and Pharrell Williams, both of whom also featured on follow-up single “Lose Yourself to Dance.” Random Access Memories earned Daft Punk a further three Grammys, including Album of the Year, and the ceremony hosted one of the last stagings of their spectacular live show. “When you know how a magic trick is done, it's so depressing,” Bangalter told Pitchfork in a 2013 Cover Story. “We focus on the illusion because giving away how it's done instantly shuts down the sense of excitement and innocence.” The year of Random Access Memories' release, Daft Punk were also credited with co-production on several tracks from Kanye West's Yeezus, including the formidable opening trio of “On Sight,” “Black Skinhead,” and “I Am a God.” They would go on to collaborate with the Weeknd on the 2016 single “Starboy”—Daft Punk's first Billboard singles chart topper—as well as a second hit, “I Feel It Coming.”Beyond the singles, their visual identity, interstellar mystique, and party-music ethos inspired generations of artists across genres. LCD Soundsystem's breakout song, “Daft Punk Is Playing at My House,” captured the duo's paradoxical embodiment of hipster cool even as their singles dominated airwaves. They released several batches of incredible holiday merch. They were sampled by R&B greats Janet Jackson and Jazmine Sullivan, parodied in Family Guy and Powerpuff Girls, and celebrated in art galleries around the world.
