* Email from Spencer: Getting back into Earthdawn and thanks for the podcast! * Email from Rob: Clarifying earlier comment about recorded actual play. * Any plans for the EDSG to talk about the connections with 1879? * Rob will be doing an Earthdawn one-shot for an actual play podcast and will let us know! * Josh’s Soapbox: Metaplot * Focus of the Iopos book on the city and people in it rather than the Deep Lore. * Elven Nations did not go into ancient immortal elf secrets. * The story of the immortals and powerful beings is interesting. * Focus on kings, dragons, and immortals can result in not leaving room for the player characters. * Word of the day: Deprotagonization * Sourcebooks should be gameable, not a novel focused on favored NPCs. * Potential pitfalls of a living setting. * Can’t assume that every game has the same interest in the Deep Lore. * Josh avoids a rant on the obsession with continuity, canonicity, and trivial minutiae. * Only so much space in the book, so choices must be made. * Elves! * Lots of information to take in about them in Earthdawn. * The trouble with elves in RPGs and related backlash. * Elves are people. * The Elven Court and a twist on the cliche. * Tension between Blood Elves and Unprotected Elves. * Lest you forget, Alachia is awesome, but also a garbage person. * Philosophy of the Wheel of Life. * Weaknesses of the Wheel as presented. * Lots of detailed rituals described in the Denizens essay. * Descriptive, not prescriptive. * Elven crafts form as much as function. * Family size and the realities of population sustainability. * The stereotype of long-lived races, patience, and relationship with time. * Number crunching the elf player character. * Combat-type elves should probably focus on defensive talents that lean on their high Dexterity * Good Troubadours and magicians * Fast, agile, middling karma, fragile. Topic: World of Warcraft This week, we start the process of learning about one of my favorite games of the last decade, and Mom gets to come and journey with me on it. We’re learning about World of Warcraft, and while we can’t talk about everything, we’ll certainly give you a good idea of what it’s all about! Tutorial MMORPG – Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game Developed and Created by Blizzard Entertainment, now Activision Blizzard Interactive. Based on previous MMOs, like Runescape, Ultima Online, Everquest, Star Wars Galaxies, and many other game. Personal Favorite were Phantasy Star Online and Ragnarok Online Blizzard knows how to distill the core, fun elements of a game, rebuild it in their own image and what is fun about it, and then paint a rich narrative over the entire game to bring it to life. Blizzard is well known for their Warcraft, Starcraft, and Diablo franchises. A good studio that puts out quality games. History Beginning development in 1999-2000 around the same time as development on Warcraft 3. Elements from Warcraft 3 helped shape the story, character, world, and races of the upcoming World of Warcraft. Announced in 2001, released in late fall of 2004. Immediate success based of studio’s previous work and franchise of Warcraft a few years earlier. The game was a worldwide success, and quickly became the most popular and largest game in history. Additional expansion are released every two years to provide new mechanics, character classes and/or races, new locations to visit, and new stories/lore. Vanilla/Classic (2004) Initial incarnation of the game. Story takes place on Azeroth, a fictional, fantasy world with two major factions trying to bide for control over the world: The Alliance(Humans, Dwarfs, Gnomes, & Night Elves) The Horde (Orcs, Trolls, Tauren, &Undead(Forsaken)) Each control major areas of two continents and war against each other in an eternal struggle. Original story focused on a Dragon lord trying to come to power. Blood gods of the Trolls seeking to corrupt the world. Ancient bugs awakening from their slumber. And the Undead returning to finish the job. Classic versions of the original game were recently released in August of 2019 to allow players to play the original version of the game. The Burning Crusade (2006) Set in the world of Outland, the former home of Orcs. Alliance recruits the Dranaei. Horde recruits the Blood Elves. Story has us fighting against the Burning Legion, the universal evil bad guys set on destroying all life. Eventually to fight a big bad named Illidan Introduction of Flying in game Wrath of the Lich King (2008) Set on the continent of Northrend Introduced a new player class (Death Knights) for all races Story follows forcing trying to subdue the big bad Lich King from Warcraft 3 Marked what many feel is the high point of the game. 12 Million Subscribers high. Cataclysm (2010) Revamped the 1-60 game world, drastically altering the landscape of the game to allow flying and new game effects. Alliance recruits the Worgen. Horde recruit a faction of Goblins Some class/race combinations rebalanced for more options. Story follows heroes trying to stop the dragon ‘Deathwing’ from destroying the world. He’s the one that caused the world to sunder, otherwise known in game as ‘The Cataclysm’. New world also introduced a more dynamic story that would begin to play out over multiple expansions and lead in to the next one over time. Mists of Pandaria (2012) Set in the land of Pandaria, a place hidden in mist until the Cataclysm revealed it. Alliance and Horde recruit Panderians, New class known as the monk introduced. Story follows the Alliance and Horde bring war to a new place that hadn’t seen it and causing a mess. Eventually capped off with the Leader of the Horde trying to start a genocide of his own faction and his eventual downturn. Warlords of Draenor (2014) Returned to Outland before it became Outland, and even went back in time. Introduction of Garrisons as a major feature. Story followed form warchief going back in time to before the orcs were corrupted, and trying to build the Horde he always wish it would be. We would stop the new horde from advancing in to our world and taking it over. Game quickly begins to slow down, with the game being less than well received and considered lackluster. Entire raid content/patch was dropped. Legion (2016) Set in the Broken Isle, a lost location where the Burning Legion has returned thanks to Gul’dan from last expansion being sent to our world. Introduced the Demon Hunters to the game. Revamp of all Classes and specs to create dynamic, individual game play, and Order Halls. Story follows us trying to stop the burning Legion of returning and putting an end to their campaign once and for all. Many people happy about this expansion and considered a new high point. Battle for Azeroth (2018) Current expansion. Set on islands of Kul Tiras and Zandalar, forgotten lands in wow lore. We recruit new allied races to assist: Alliance gets Light Forged Dranaei, Void Elves, Dark Iron Dwarfs, Mechagon Gnomes, and Kul Tirans Horde get High Mountain Tauren, Nightborne, Mag’har Orcs, Vulpera, and Zandalari Trolls. Story initially starts as a continuation of the Horde vs Alliance, but quickly find the new WarchiefSylvanas trying to kill everyone for a secret agenda. Continued on success of Legion in story and gameplay. Shadowlands (2020) New expansion set in the land of the dead. Revamp of Order Halls and revamp of character abilities. Changing leveling process back to 60 cap level, making each expansion the 10-50 experience. Story revolves around Sylvanas opening up a portal/hole to the shadowlands, but for unknown reasons. Planned for 3rd quarter of 2020. Classes: Warriors – Heavy Plate soldiers, good at all weapons, great at tanking. Paladins – Holy Warriors, can do close combat, plus tanking, and Healing. Death Knights – Unholy knights, good at tanking, but channeling unholy skills to do damage Shamans – Nature warriors that call upon the raw elements to attack and heal. Hunters – Similar to rangers, good with all long range combat Rogues – Typical thief, can hide in stealth and strike enemies with ease. Druids – Shape-shifter that rely on nature magic to transform in to either healers, tanks, melee or ranged damage Monks – Barehanded warriors who are drunk tanks, quick melee fighters, or mystical healers. Demon Hunters – Similar to Illidan, these are warriors infused with demonic energy that can also be tanks Mage – Typical wizard channeling the fire, ice, or arcane magic Warlocks – Dark wizards that use fel and shadow to summon demons to do their bidding. Priests – Holy wizards that excel at healing, but have an unholy damage. Things to do in game: Leveling/Alts – Common is to level your character until max level, or start a new character and level up all over again Dungeons – 5 man groups tackling various smaller issues, usually relating/theming to current events/expansion Raids – 10-25 man groups tackling bigger dungeons, almost always related to the current events/story Player Vs Player – various areas, themed objectives, and open world fights between the Horde and Alliance. Pet Battles – Introduced in Cataclysm, think Pokemon with your in game pets Dailies – series of objectives that can be completed daily for various rewards Transmog – Hunting Gear or looks from various sources/objectives Role Playing – Popular amongst roleplay servers, allowing character to act out stories with their characters.

Convert to Raid Presents: The podcast for World of Warcraft and other Blizzard Games!
This week, Blizzard announced something that surprised no one: the Alliance bike from Azeroth Choppers will be available in game as well as the one from the Horde! But the Alliance bike will be available for purchase from a vendor, and no specific price tag was mentioned. While at Blizzcon, developers said that not all races would be reworked by the time Warlords was released, but they will manage to rework every race except for Blood Elves. With all of the artwork that is new and improved for WoD, can anyone blame them? (If you read the forums, the answer is yes.) Speaking of forums, one post got a lot of attention this week on the World of Warcraft forums that contained a lot of bad information. The CtR crew gives its own unique take on this to help set the record straight with a little reenactment with a special guest! The gang will also give you the synopsis of the dungeons available right now on the Warlords of Draenor beta as well as a brief look at some of the raid testing that’s been going on this week along with all of your questions!
The rivers run red as Hathorr (Low Pop Wow) joins us to discuss those ever-controversial wielders of magic, the Blood Elves.
Grinding Rep and Helping alts and silly transfers. Closing tag contest extended 1 more week. Silly things I did this week Transfer an alt from one account to another just to see if the Netherwelp from the Collector's Edition would transfer. It did Log into my toons on the Baelgun server and take everything of value from most characters and put everything on Sherrinna the Level 14 Priest so I can transfer her to ER. Great things I did this week Make it to Winterspring on my level 56 Hunter Auntrillia Grinding Rep is time consuming. To explain Grinding Rep - Some quests require you to "make nice" with a certain group. For instance I needed to get to Winterspring. The only way to get to Winterspring is through a tunnel that is full of Timbermaw Furbolgs but if I kill of a bunch of their enemies, Deadwood and Winterfall Furbolgs they will like me and eventually I can at least run through their tunnels without them killing me. But there's another quest I need to actually be able to talk to these guys and they won't do that It's Alt Relative - I wanted to go over the relationships between my alts Main Alts - Ardrion and Aprillian Aunt Rillia - Ardrion and Aprillan's Mother's Younger Sister (Rillia, a Troll, was actually adopted by the Blood Elves) Veyle (Level 36 Troll Rogue) and Iwari (Level 44 Orc Warloc) - Used to fight with A & A's parents in the Old Days. Each were summoned on behalf of their parents to help the younger Blood Elves
Alright, Here we go with this weeks show notes. In the news we discuss the new WoW armory. Is it a blessing for the lost and confused? Ctrl Alt WoW Episode 006 – Were you prepared January 20, 2007 Segment I. What's Going On A. Can I have your attention please - B. Installing and running Burning Crusade – success C. My train was late into Chicago, Amtrak was nice, they put us up in a hotel, but that meant I wouldn't be getting home on Monday night as I planned. I would have had just enough time to get in line at Ebgames and pick up the 2 copies I had reserved. So Sunday night I'm stuck in Chicago trying to figure out how to get my copies of BC. I would be on the train for almost 24 hours once I left Chicago Monday night, so there would be no way to get it. Could I ask my husband to go to Ebgames Monday night and stand in line? I don't think so. No. 1. Very very painless. The installation took went pretty fast. Four disks, a 163 mb patch, then a 4.3 mb patch and then that opening screen No. 2. I started a blood elf and of course the starting area was jam packed. But there was no lag and it was like Time Square on New Year's Eve. People were dancing and flirting and laughing to try out all the new emotes. D. I was able to mail items to my Burning Crusade character and invite her to the guild from a character on the non updated side. E. I don't have an alt over 55, so no Outlands for me. I was excited about getting my 47 Hunter Leatherworker over 300. I went to the Tribal Leatherworker trainer in Strangethorn Vale and picked up some new recipes but it turns out to go over 300, she has to go to Outland and find a Grand Master Trainer in, yep you guessed it, Outland F. Burning Crusade – A success in my bookSegment II. WoW News A. Topping the 8 million mark B. nSegment III. Alt Round Up – A. Who's Doing what No. 1. I've been mostly busy with the twins, Zee and Pril, brother and sister Blood Elves, same coloring and hair. Zee male rogue and Pril female hunter. They've been leveling mostly in Eversong Woods. One thing I like to do is sometimes grab the first profession handy. This way they can begin to make stuff and then unlearn it and learn the ones they really want. So Pril got alchemy from that alchemist at the party at Saltheril's Haven and Zee got herbalism there as well. So he was able to pick up some bloodthistle. He had already gotten Jewelcrafting from the trainer in the inn in Falconwing Square in the Ruins of Silvermoon. I got them both up to 10 and Pril got pet taming, there's a quest at Farstrider Retreat, not to be confused with Farstrider Square, which is in Silvermoon. No. 2. Prilfire got the guild and turned it over to Aprillian (was able to get Aprillian again on Alleria) and she designed the new tabard, an octopus representing the many alts. No. 3. Prilfire made a couple of things, ironfeather No. 4. Pryl in Westfall No. 5. Illia making money – No. 6. Sent a 3 storage alts to Silvermoon City via the Translocator in UC – Aranxcha, Miasha and Theeo (actually Theeo's a level 17 but he also had all the cooking supplies for leveling cooking) . They were able to help better leather pants and shirts, some weapons and supplies. No. 7. Sent Rillia my level 36 Rogue Blacksmith/Enchanter to give a couple of boosts. Particularly speed to boots. But it's kind of tricky with two accounts. Rillia is on the account with Zee so she could enchant Pril's stuff, but not Zee. Zee's stuff had to be traded to Pril, echanted by Rillia and then traded back to Zee. Ooh and Rillia had over 30 bars of silver so she gave a bunch to Pril to give to Zee and now Zee No. 8. So now Zee and Pril are pretty set up, nothing to special but a few enchants and nice gear and they are out questing heading towards Ghostland, a few quests in Tranquillium and then back to Silvermoon City when I decided Pril needs Ressan the Needler as a pet. So they both went through the Translocater and out into Trisfal Glades where they picked up some quests in Brill and headed into the forest. The first time Pril died trying to tame Ressan and Zee ran away so they wouldn't have to kill him. Then when she came back, she tamed him the second time and now she's been hunting with them doing the Brill quests. I've got pix on the web site http://ctrlaltwow.blogspot.com B. Ideas/Discussion No. 1. If you can't have two accounts, just be sure to send anything you might need enchanted to your enchanter before you equipped it if it's bind on equip No. 2. I was able to get an alt from sunstrider Isle to Fairbreeze Village at level 1 without her coming in to contact with any mobs. Of course a lot of this had to do with all of the activity. So right now might be a good time to get a bank in Silvermoon city. Also, with the translocater from UC to Silvermoon City, an undead bank might work as well. No. 3. Create follow macro and place in the same number slot for every following character. Have the following alt complete the no. of collection quest first, that way the leading one can still identify the quest drops Segment IV. Server Shout out A. Alleria No. 1. To Kokoh B. Silverhand No. 1. Server splitup Segment V. In The House – Discussing what is going on in our real lives that has been affected by playing World of Warcraft A. Lots of people taking off from work and school B. I almost panicked when I realized my train was going to be delayed in to Chicago. I was constantly watching the times we arrived and I had to hold back on pestering the train crew. Then I started calculating taking the bus to New York, which would have been about a 24 hour bus ride and then catching a train from there, just to get home by Mon night. Segment VI. Favorite Places/Things about WoW A. Eversong Woods No. 1. It's really pretty, I love two sides to Silvermoon City Segment VII. Email – A. See below. B. Still looking for some No. 1. Ctrlaltwow@gmail.com - email No. 2. http://ctrlaltwow.blogspot.com - website/blog No. 3. http://Ctrlaltwow.podcastspot.com - podcast site Segment VIII. Closing Thoughts A. Burning Crusade No. 1. A couple of good reviews on iTunes No. 2. Trying to stay focus but would like some more feedback Hi, i like the show a lot. I have been playing WoW for about 7 months and have gotten hooked on it just like everyone else, but it had become kind of a vice for me because it eats in to my free time so much. I was on the verge of deleting my level 60 and all of my alts and leaving the game for good. But on the day that i was going to do it i met a level 18 warlock, named Yosie, in west fall while playing on my priest alt for the last time (or so i thought). She sent me a random group invite and asked me if i would like to quest together, so i decided to use my 60 for one last good deed before it got deleted and got on Nidus (my 60 main). I helped her finish her quests in west fall, since I am a fire mage this was an easy task for me (AoE FTW). We had fun and chatted about our real lives and about WoW, it turned out that she had only been playing for 2 weeks. In return for my good deed she gave me a guild invite to , which is the guild I am in now and its the best guild i have ever been in, and i was very grateful. The next day we grouped again and had even more fun together, I helped her get her Sucubis quest done and had fun joking around and talking in the party chat. Sadly Yosei deleted her character, but the fun that i had those 2 days made me realize that WoW is more then a video game its a social experiment and that i was part of a global community. So i made a New Years resolution to keep playing WoW but in moderation, so instead of deleting my 60 i just deleted my alts. I enjoy your podcast and i hope you don't get discouraged, your part of a global community too and you should make sure your voice is heard even if its not the loudest.
