Russ Ballard gave me chills every night on Rock Meets Classic when I heard him sing “You Can Do Magic”. It has have to be his version, no one else's version of song. “ Paul Shortino's response when asked “what is your favourite song of all time?”

Interview by Kris PetersWhen it comes to drummers they don't come more top shelf than Carmine Appice. After leaving Ozzy Osbourne in the early 1980s, Appice decided he was done with working for other musicians and decided instead to forge his own path, with his own band. That band became King Kobra who burst onto the music scene in 1985 with their debut album Ready To Strike. With a sound that nestled somewhere between heavy metal and glam metal, King Kobra have undergone several line-up changes over the years, as well as taking more than one gestation periods off, but one thing has remained constant throughout.Carmine Appice. Now, with a renewed line-up featuring Quiet Riot guitarist Carlos Cavazo and former Dio member Rowan Robertson, King Kobra are back with their seventh and arguably best album to date titled We Are Warriors. It is a typically hard hitting album from the band and one which Appice promises will be the start of another fresh era of metal from one of the greats.HEAVY sat down with Appice to find out more."I've always tried to stay within the limits of whatever band's I'm working with," he began. "We Are Warriors started out with me and Paul (Shortino, vocals) and sometimes Rowan and sometimes Carlos putting some ideas down because we all have studios. The whole album was done by everyone in their home studio, because the kind of budgets you get today and everybody lives in different places... it doesn't pay to fly everybody in and get hotels and sit around and write songs and then go into a studio. You might as well throw your money out the window that you're getting. Me and Paul probably made 5c an hour making that album because we spent a lot of time on it. A lot of time writing the songs. But we did it all by the internet. As you can see I have my studio behind me and I engineer my own drums. We did everything that way."In the full interview Carmine goes deeper into the writing and recording process, what he was going for musically with We Are Warriors, what the new members bring to the sound, how much King Kobra's sound has changed from their debut album to this one, working with Ozzy Osbourne and being sacked by Sharon, changing with the times and more.

Tony Palmucci se unió a Baton Rouge en 1991 y lanzó el álbum Lights Out on The Playground.

Rough Cutt is one of the original Sunset Strip heyday bands, playing with, and often trading members between, Ratt, Dio, and other bands of the era, though Rough Cutt never quite achieved the same level of success as some of their peers. In 2019, they were still around, though in the process of merging into a group called Rough Riot with members of Quiet Riot. When Rough Riot finalized its lineup change in the summer of 2019, now called Carlos Cavazo's Rough Riot, it was with Paul Shortino, singer of Rough Cutt, Amir Derakh, one of two Rough Cutt guitarists, White Lion's Greg D'Angelo on drums, Sean McNabb from Quiet Riot on bass, and guitarist Carlos Cavazo, also from Quiet Riot. Rough Cutt's Rockin' Dave Alford and Chris Hager, not a part of Rough Riot, decided to continue on with a new lineup of Rough Cutt. Alford, along with Shortino, was a founding member of the band, and Hager and Derakh, though not strictly founders, joined very early on, before the band recorded its first album. Alford and Hager auditioned and eventually hired musicians to fill in the missing three band positions. They publicly debuted their new lineup in November of 2019 during a live show in Portland, Oregon, which is the first time Pariah Burke interviewed the band. Leading up to, and in the year and a half since, that new lineup debut, Rough Cutt has aggressively marketed themselves, letting the world know about the new Rough Cutt, now including Steven St. James (Sarge, Cagny and the Dirty Rats) on vocals, second guitarist Darren Housholder (Shrapnel Records recording artist, Love/Hate), and bassist Jeff Buehner (The Loyal Order). Slowed by the pandemic, they spent most of 2020 using social media to connect with Rough Cutt fans, while not able to finish and release their first single together until March 2021, when they simultaneously dropped the single and music video for it with plenty of pre-release press and fanfare. According to the Alford and Hager, they never heard from their former Rough Cutt and Rough Riot bandmates; in fact, Alford's and Hager's attempts to contact them went unanswered. Which is why they were so surprised when, yesterday (June 8th, 2021), their former bandmates released their own album as Rough Cutt, including their own version of the single Alford's and Hager's lineup put out in March. The new album, titled Rough Cutt 3, because, other than a best of anthology, it's only the third studio LP released under the Rough Cutt band name since 1985. The release of the album, which had no pre-release announcement or marketing, was accompanied by a press release asserting that the trio calling itself Rough Cutt--Paul Shortino, Matt Thorne (aka Matt Thorr), and Amir Derakh--are "the three main men of Rough Cutt" and are "arguably the three most important members of Rough Cutt." Further, without naming them, Alford and Hager were accused of making "false accusations" and lies about [the others]]. Within minutes of the release of the album by DDR Music Group, formerly Demon Doll Records, I reached out for comment from both versions of the band. My message directly to Paul Shortino went unreturned, though the owner of DDR and producer of Rough Cutt 3, Lance V, said he would pass along my request for an interview to Shortino. Hager immediately agreed to an interview, and brought along Alford. This is my conversation with Rough Cutt founding members and apparent torchbearers Rockin' Dave Alford and Chris Hager the day after Shortino, Thorn, Derakh, and DDR Music Group issued Rough Cutt 3 and its accompanying incendiary press release. Frustrado, DuBrow empieza a mandar cartas a bandas metaleras nuevas en Los Ángeles sabiendo que su éxito era en parte debido a su éxito "ennow that their success was in part owed to the past successes of Quiet Riot". La banda lanzó Down to the Bone ese mismo año. Guns / Brides of Destruction.

After a full month of celebrating KISS, we're back to celebrating all things that rock. KISSMAS in JULY was a huge success and we're ready to now turn you on to some stuff you aren't getting on the radio. For the new listeners, the Radio Sucks Radio Show's premise is simple. We expose you to some great quality music (old and new) that rock radio is just not giving you. We do this as a service to you, the listener, to encourage you to go out and purchase this great music and support the artist. Check the Amazon links for each artist played at the bottom of these show notes to hook yourself up with great tunes! We start off volume 13 of this series with a palate cleanser for the non-KISS fans in our audience that endured a full month of us extolling the virtues of how much KISS rocks. Teenage Bottlerocket, from Wyoming, released an album in 2009 that featured a tongue-in-cheek punk ditty pronouncing the band as being 'Bigger Than KISS' with lots of jabs thrown at the band. We want to play this for the non-KISS fans and those of you that have a sense of humor. We love KISS, you know that. We think it's good to laugh at things you love once in a while. Supagroup Supagroup, from New Orleans, started up in 1996. In this episode, we take a listen to a rock track that's sure to get you in trouble if you take it too seriously. Have a seat over there... One of the benefits of rock/metal podcasts are the fact that you can get turned on to music that you certainly can't find on the airwaves. Such is the case with The Wildhearts. Fronted by the enigmatic Ginger, the band has gone through numerous lineup changes but due to Ginger's amazing songwriting, has continued to put out some of the catchiest rock songs you've never hears. We listen to a track from their self-titled debut that's easy to love. Dick Wagner One of our favorite interviews was with former Alice Cooper guitarist Dick Wagner. Dick has an amazing musical history with his connections to Alice, KISS, and Aerosmith among others. His solo output is also very good. We take a listen to Dick's take on a rock and roll classic that inspired him. This track comes from his autobiography 'Not Only Women Bleed' which is available HERE. Highly recommended! We return from the first break to listen to a track from a modern-day power trio. Richie Kotzen, Mike Portnoy, and Billy Sheehan combine their chops to form The Winery Dogs. Their new release has already become one of the biggest rock albums of 2013; charting high despite limited airplay. We try to do our part in supporting this awesome release with a track that will leave you wanting more. Another recently-released album that's getting critical praise yet not nearly enough attention on radio is ...Like Clockwork, the latest offering from Queens of the Stone Age. Picked up on Aaron Camaro's recent excursion to Los Angeles, the album has been in constant rotation on his playlist. We take a listen to to a sampling of this new album. 2013 has proven to be a good year for rock and metal as Chris' next pick proves. With one of the more surprising releases of the year, King Kobra returns with a sophomore effort for their new lineup featuring Paul Shortino on vocals. King Kobra II has a full slate of solid material and we take a listen to the lead-off track that will run right over you. Heading into the next break, we hear from longtime Chicago doom metal legends Trouble with a track from their new release 'The Distortion Field.' Hailed by some as one of their stronger albums, we take a listen to a great track that will have you headbanging in no time. For those familiar with the Decibel Geek podcast, it's no mystery that Chris has become a Thin Lizzy fan over the show's history. This is due to many listeners pushing him to check out their catalog. Now rebranded, The Black Star Riders, have released a new album with 'All Hell Breaks Loose,' an album full of dual-guitar leads and swagger; hallmarks of the Thin Lizzy sound. While Phil Lynott can never be fully replaced, it's hard to argue with Ricky Warwick's channeling of the gone-too-soon frontman/bassist on this new track. Closing out the show is a band that's long been a go-to pick for our Radio Sucks Radio Shows. LA Guns, with their ever-changing lineup, have released a massive amount of good tunes over the years. We couldn't think of a better way to close out this new installment than with this edgy track from the Shrinking Violet sessions. Buy Music!
