Chicago lawmakers have scrapped plans to build a migrant camp in Morgan Park a week after the state stopped a potential camp in Brighton Park. Meanwhile, conservative Democrats on the council are asking for the resignation of seven officials from the Johnson Administration for greenlighting construction on toxic land in Brighton Park. Reset learns the latest about housing for migrants and other news from Chicago's City Council from WBEZ city government and politics reporter Tessa Weinberg.
This week, Gov. JB Pritzker paused and then officially shut down construction of a tent camp for new arrivals in Brighton Park citing environmental concerns. City Hall must now propose a new location to house thousands of migrants. Both offices blamed the other with the Johnson administration blaming unclear state environmental standards and Pritzker's office arguing city officials failed to engage the state's environmental protection agency. South Side Weekly's Chima "Naira" Ikoro and the Tribune's Jake Sheridan are here to talk about the fallout. Plus, we discuss Mayor Brandon Johnson's plan to reopen two city-run mental health clinics and preview next week's pilgrimage to the Our Lady of Guadalupe shrine in Des Plaines. Gov. J.B. Pritzker's administration moved to officially scrap Mayor Brandon Johnson's plan to build a migrant camp on a controversial Southwest Side lot Tuesday, in a scathing rebuke of the city's evaluation of the land's potential environmental hazards. In a statement, Pritzker's office said an Illinois Environmental Protection Agency review of the city's environmental report — which was released late Friday evening — indicates “concerns related to insufficient soil sampling and remediation” at the Brighton Park site selected by Johnson's team. And because the time required for additional testing and remediation would be extensive, the state “will not proceed” with the base camp, Pritzker said.Support the show
Gov. JB Pritzker temporarily paused construction Monday on a migrant base camp in Brighton Park following an environmental assessment that showed mercury and other contaminants in the area. On the evening of December 28, 1956, fifteen-year-old Barbara Grimes and her thirteen-year-old sister, Patricia, left their home in Chicago, Illinois headed for a movie theater in Brighton Park to see the latest Elvis Presley film. When the girls failed to return home that evening as expected, their mother sent the two other siblings to wait for them at the closest bus station, but when they returned later without Barbara and Patricia, she became anxious and began calling their friends, before eventually phoning the police. Three weeks later, Barbara and Patricia's bodies were discovered on the side of a rural road by a construction worker in Willow Springs, about an hour outside Chicago. The murder of the Grimes sisters and the investigation that followed remains one of Chicago's most notorious cold cases and one of the most costly and labor-intensive searches in the state's history. Gina Ramirez learned she was pregnant in the fall of 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic. Unable to practice social distancing due to her job, she came down with the virus when she was just two months pregnant. Like many Latinos in her neighborhood of Brighton Park in southwest Chicago, she had to navigate the anxiety and insecurity of not knowing how her job would support her while sick or pregnant, or how the virus would impact her pregnancy. In this episode, reporter Francesca Mathewes revisits the crucial months that Latinos learned about the Covid-19 vaccine through the lens of Gina and her family. Local activists in Chicago shed light on the real fears and obstacles that fueled vaccine hesitancy, and illustrate how their focus on community health safeguarded the health and wellness of neighborhood residents and families like Gina's. If you go to the Porty Market in Brighton Park today, look out for a stand selling bottles of a drink called Pochle. It's the name chosen by the man who's making Scottish Calvados or cider brandy or eau d vie from our excess apples. Rather than see them go to waste, Chris Miles will collect and store them until he can turn them into apple juice which he then sends off to be fermented and then distilled into a clear, and very strong, spirit. And Pochle? It's an old Scots word meaning to have something without quite having permission.https://pochle.co.uk/

It’s Friday the 5th of February. Welcome to the 6th bulletin from Porty News You may have seen the posts from Portobello Community Council (PCC) about the two “expressions of interest” in Portobello Town Hall. As we’ve reported before, one of these comes from a community group (Portobello Central) and another from a ballet school (Peter Schaufuss). Both groups have now submitted outline proposals to be considered by the city council’s Finance & Resources Committee in March. However, before then the Community Council would like feedback on both of these two options. You can find links to both proposals in the transcript of this bulletin, as well as a link to the Community Council’s page where you can make your comments. However, the PCC suggests that you might want to delay responding until after the 14th of February. That’s the date when both organisations should have responded to the collated questions asked by you, The Porty Public. The Community Council says it will update the information on their website and link to the responses when they get them. Portobello Central https://bit.ly/39vsxIWPeter Schaufuss proposal: https://bit.ly/3r3axLEPCC Comments: https://bit.ly/2YNq8Tq The Portobello Farmers’ Market will take place in Brighton Park tomorrow from 9:30 to 1:30. 15 traders will be there but, in keeping with current restrictions, only stalls selling food retail and takeaway coffee will be available. I think some people were disappointed when there wasn’t any apple juice available for the online wassail last weekend – but you will be able to buy some of it at the market. The organisers insist that all the safety measures will be in in place, with sanitising stations at the entrances and the stalls set back from the edge of the pavement to make social distancing easier. By contrast, we noticed recently that the Little Green Van had decided not to open up again on the Prom We were reminded by Portobello Rugby Club that Scotland play England on the first day of this year’s Six Nations. Understandably, the club is disappointed that they can’t be in the stands at Twickenham or, (at least) be cheering on the team with a beer up at the club. However, that official line remains stay at home, avoid crowded places & only undertake essential trips. But, as they make clear, here’s hoping Scotland go one better than our last visit there! And tomorrow will see local singer-songwriter Rosie Nimmo feature in the latest full episode of the Porty Podcast. Rosie released her latest album, Where Time Suspends, today which you can buy through her website or through a service called BandCamp. It’s already been album of the week in Scotland On Sunday and various parts of BBC radio have already featured some of the tracks…like this, Keyboard Warriors.Rosie's Website: https://www.rosienimmo.com/Bandcamp page: https://rosienimmo.bandcamp.com/Album Review: tinyurl.com/6ufwfd9b That’s it for this week. There are renewed calls for cameras to go up at a New Brighton Park after two children were attacked.Emma Duggan’s 12-year-old son and his friend were in Thomson Park, in New Brighton, on Sunday when they were punched repeatedly. The friend was taken to hospital and Duggan's son still has headaches. She told Chris Lynch she's since heard the community and local police had called for cameras there - but they never went up.“If there were cameras installed there, we could’ve figured this out already.”A Christchurch City Council spokesperson says there is no provision for security cameras in parks - and says safety was addressed when the park was upgraded.LISTEN ABOVE

Reset’s architecture brings you to the Brighton Park neighborhood to explore Esperanza Health Center. GUEST: Dennis Rodkin, Reset's "What's That Building?" contributor
In late October, the Pilsen-based organization Gads Hill Center opened a new $7 million facility in Brighton park to better serve immigrant communities in the southwest neighborhood. The new center, located at 4255 S. Archer Ave., will offer early education, mental health services and comprehensive family support in addition to its usual after-school programs. Aimee Casares, a 25-year-old receptionist working the center’s Pilsen location, said the new building is necessary for the younger demographic in Brighton park in need of childcare services and early development programs.
Anyone who’s been to the monthly market in Brighton Park will have seen the stall run by the Greengrocer Project. Yes, they have fruit and veg to sell – but their main reason for being there is to keep up the profile for their longer-term ambition – to set up a shop. Their model is across on the other side of town, in Bruntsfield. It’s a community greengrocer called ‘Dig In’ which is now running successfully, although it took some time to become established. By a curious turn of fate, Karen Mackay, owner of ‘Cahoots’ on Porty High Street, had been involved in the development of that and wondered if a similar project could work here. She felt there was a need after both ‘Banana Republic’ and ‘Earthy’ closed in quick succession. The idea for a Portobello Community Greengrocer caught on – but it’s not progressed as fast as many had hoped. David Calder spoke to its spokesman Charlie Cavaye about the project and its objectives.http://portobellocg.org.uk/

The Portobello branch of Amnesty International was founded a little over 40 years ago, about seven years after the creation of the organisation. You may have seen their stall at the regular market in Brighton Park or at the annual Village Fair. When lawyer Peter Benenson first set up Amnesty back in 1961, the idea was to win an amnesty for prisoners of conscience all over the world. What he and his colleagues may have underestimated was the sheer size of the problem - the number of prisoners of conscience was and remains enormous. And there were other international issues for them to address – the ‘forgotten prisoners’ and capital punishment. Although it’s an international organisation, it depends on local groups around the country – indeed around the world – to get its messages out – and that’s where the Portobello Group comes in.https://www.facebook.com/amnestyportobello/or contact: crawfordcathy@hotmail.com or Jaap.Prins@blueyonder.co.uk
Yadira Vieyra Alvarez preaches for Christmas, offering a reflection on living Christmas joy, even in difficult times: "We must remember, however, that receiving this child is a decision. If we do not accept and embrace the presence of Jesus in our daily lives, of what use is his peaceful dominion? If we do not have peace in our families, our homes, our marriages, our communities, of what use is God’s offering to us?" Yadira Vieyra Alvarez was appointed as an auditor at the 2018 Synod of Bishops on Young People, the Faith, and Vocational Discernment and represented the immigrant community in the United States. Yadira Vieyra Alvarez is Research Specialist at the School of Social Service Administration at The University of Chicago, where she works on evaluating the effectiveness of doula home visiting services being provided to adolescent mothers. Yadira is also collaborating with the University of Chicago at Illinois and Immaculate Conception Parish in Brighton Park through “Fortaleciendo mi familia” – a series of sessions aimed at bringing low-intensity cognitive behavioral therapy and psychosocial support to Mexican immigrant families experiencing distress, anxiety, and depression due to exposure to community violence, financial challenges, and migration-related worries. She attended Cristo Rey Jesuit High School and later moved to Washington D.C. where she completed her bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Theology from Georgetown University. She received her Masters of Science from Erikson Institute in Chicago, a premier graduate school in early child development. As part of her commitment to urban Catholic Education, Yadira has also served in a variety of ministerial and catechetical roles including the Leadership Advisory Council at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School. We celebrate Booth One's 50th! episode with guest co-host, Jim Reho. For the past several years, Jim has resided in the Brighton Park neighborhood on the South Side and joins us to give a great tour. Learn more facts about Chicago's South Side. Jim reports on some of the highlights in his part of Chicago. For starters, check out some of the best thin crust pizza anywhere at Vito & Nick's, 84th & Pulaski. They have been around for 90 years! Another Reho favorite is a place that serves Korean/Polish cuisine. We are planning a "Roscoe at Large" visit to check out this great concept at Kimski! Read a 4 star review here. For excellent musical programming in a beautiful setting, hear a concert at Thalia Hall. Built in the 1890's as a replica of the Prague Opera House, it was one of the most ornate theaters of its time. Located in the Pilsen neighborhood, it has wonderful acoustics and you can even rent part of the balcony. Talk about Booth One! Check out the fascinating history. We are planning to see a show there and will report back. Between Christmas and New Years was the highest grossing week in Broadway history. 359,495 people saw a Broadway show that week. Jim talks about his favorite classic American musicals, including Carousel, a Booth One favorite. Listening to the original cast album the other night, Jim says there are 4 indelible songs he can list off the top of his head. He asks Gary if there are any songs in Hamilton that will live throughout history. Gary's response is there are probably half a dozen. Jim reveals that while he majored in English, his undergraduate minor was in - get this, the History of the American Musical Theatre! Gary reports on his trip to Writers Theatre to see East Texas Hot Links and says, "You will not see better acting anywhere...It is a powerful, bold and troubling statement. I couldn't recommend it more highly." Read one of the many rave reviews here. This Pulitzer Prize finalist was written by Eugene Lee and directed splendidly by Ron OJ Parson. Speaking of Ron, he's directed a production of Blues for An Alabama Sky, running now at the Court Theatre in Hyde Park. We are looking forward to a featuring the marvelous Court Theatre on an upcoming episode. Gary talks about the Kennedy Center Honors, which featured a stunning tribute to Mavis Staples by Bonnie Raitt and Andra Day, backed by a gospel choir. Read details here. And watch President Obama's introduction here. Jim and Gary discuss Bonnie Raitt's lovely relationship with her father, John, who was the original Billy Bigalow in Carousel in 1945! See John and Bonnie sing a gorgeous duet of Hey There with the Boston Pops when he was 85. Another highlight of our winter theater season on Booth One was seeing The Christians at Steppenwolf. Gary and Jim talk about the fascinating questions the show raises about faith, death and forgiveness. Again, with crazy good acting - across the board! Chris Jones' review for the Chicago Tribune gives you a great sense of the play. Try to see it in person. Unforgettable! Gary calls for a sequel. Kiss of Death: Learn about Sister Francis Ann Carr, a powerful member of the Shaker community. Read full obituary. From the Times Union obit, "The Shakers are a Christian religious group founded in 18th century in England. They practice a celibate and communal lifestyle, pacifism, and their model of equality of the sexes, which they institutionalized in their society in the 1780s, the group's website explains...They are also known for their simple living, architecture, and furniture." The Shakers offered homes to children or families who had nowhere else to go. Sister Francis was one of the last three practicing Shakers in her communal village.
