Naturally, for the craziest movie of the year so far, we had to get the craziest panel yet. Dom is joined by two of his oldest friends, Dustin "The Duster" Mason & Dontre "Tarantino" James to break down easily one of the most ridiculous ideas for a movie in a long time, one that stretches the "based on a true story" concept so far the term is practically meaningless at this point, and somehow the best thing that Elizabeth Banks has directed, Cocaine Bear. Based loosely on a 1985 story about a bag of cocaine that got dropped in the woods in Georgia, was ingested by a bear and subsequently caused it to die, this non-stop coke-fueled movie is one part slapstick comedy, one part gruesome creature feature. With an ensemble cast sporting the likes of Ray Liotta, O'Shea Jackson, Jr,. Alden Ehrenreich, Keri Russell, Brooklyn Prince, Christian Covery, Kristofer Hivju, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Margo Martindale & Isiah Whitlock, Jr., this movie truly is a wild ride and one for the ages, as the titular bear goes on a rampage after eating cocaine. Dom, Dustin & Dontre break down everything about the movie before going on a few rants of their own about the Oscars, the SAG awards, The Whale, Avatar: The Way of Water, etc. It's a crazy time. Don't be fooled by the ominous title, this show is as family friendly as it gets. It follows Hilde Lisko and her friends, a trio of young investigative journalists, in their pursuit to uncover the truth behind the contamination of Erie Harbor lake. The show boasts a big cast (Jim Sturgess, Brooklyn Prince, Abby Miller...) but its most impressive feature is that it is based on the actual life of Hilde Lysiak, a girl who broke a murder news story at 9 years old, and is currently the youngest member of the Society of Professional Journalists. In Today's Episode we discuss "Dark Rooms," the fourth episode of the second season. Hope you tune in!

Everyday Rockstar (0:00:00)Lisa and Richie feature this week's Everyday Rockstar. We want to feature you! You can nominate yourself or someone you love by emailing thelisashow@byu.edu with “Everyday Rockstar” in the subject line. How our Diets Affect the Environment (0:04:31)We Americans can sometimes be wasteful with our food. According to the USDA, it's been estimated that we waste about 40% of our national food supply every year, which equals out to about 133 billion pounds of food. You may be thinking, so what if some of my food goes to waste? I eat most of it! But it can have some serious environmental impacts. Joining us today is Kathryn Kellogg, founder of lifestyle website Going Zero Waste, to discuss how we can be more eco-friendly in our food consumption. Turning the Tide on Ocean Loss (0:14:10)One place has recently become home to over five trillion pieces of plastic, but it's not a recycling plant, or even a landfill. It's the ocean. Our oceans hold some of our most valuable resources, and yet, each year they get a little closer to destruction due to pollution, overfishing, and the extinction of marine life. It's hard to feel like you're able to make a difference when you're just one person and the ocean is thousands of miles wide and thousands of feet deep. So we invited Cristina Mittermeier, a conservation photographer, often featured on National Geographic, and one of the founders of SeaLegacy. She joins us to share her insights into how we can help save our oceans. Fighting for Forests (0:26:19)The rate of deforestation is shocking—we're losing approximately 27 soccer fields of forest per minute, which adds up to 18.7 MILLION acres of forested land lost each year. I feel like the importance of our planet's forests is something we all kinda get, but it's a hard concept for me to fully wrap my brain around. This is an important discussion for us to have, because if we don't truly understand a problem that's this big, why would we feel motivated to help? To help, we've invited Kerry Cesareo onto the show to answer our questions today. Kerry is the Senior Vice President of the World Wildlife Fund's Forest department . The Science of Climate Change (0:34:57)Whenever you hear someone talk about “Climate Change” you might wonder if it's actually as dire as they say. You've heard people argue both sides on YouTube and the news. You've heard multiple opinions about how severe the problem is. And you've always heard people reference “scientific experts”, but who are these so-called climate experts and what do they really have to say about all of this? Well, allow us to introduce you to one. Dr. Michael Mann is a distinguished Professor of Atmospheric Science at Penn State and the author of several books on climate change. His work has been a vital part in proving the severity of the earth's rising temperature to people and politicians since 2001. Enjoying the Environment (0:44:33)We all care about climate change in different degrees. Maybe you're doing everything you can to help preserve our planet but are struggling to get your friends on board. Or maybe you love the earth but have never felt motivated to get off the sideline and actually make changes. So, if the science and facts we read about aren't enough to change anyone's behavior towards the environment, what will? Maybe the key is to spend more time in the nature we are trying to save. Joining us today is Michael Brune, the executive director for the Sierra Club . The Sierra Club is the most influential grassroots, environmental organization in the United States, and they motivate people to get outside and enjoy the benefits of nature. Helping Animal Shelters (0:50:38)While our pets are enjoying the extra attention from everyone being home so often right now, there are many pets that don't have a home that are requiring some extra attention. Many animal shelters have had to close their doors right now, but that doesn't mean that the animals they're housing have stopped needing help. So, what can we do to help out our furry friends? Here to share some of her tips with us, is Holly Sizemore, Chief Mission Officer of the Best Friends Animal Society. Finances in Marriage (1:09:26)One of the top stressors that contributes to divorce today is finances. Dealing with debt and other financial difficulties puts a strain on marriages and leads to a lot of blaming rather than problem-solving. With this looming fact in the air, we wanted go get some expert advice on what couples can do better when handling money so they can eliminate stress and keep their marriages together. Our next guest, Rachel Cruze, is a #1 New York Times best-selling author and host of The Rachel Cruze Show where she helps people learn the proper ways to handle money and stay out of debt. She joins us today to talk about how we can improve our finances for the sake of our marriages. Home Before Dark (1:28:37)As we continue to be encouraged to social distance, it feels like we are in constant need of new shows to binge. Finding appropriate and uplifting programs that the whole family can sit down and enjoy together can be challenging. Luckily, Apple TV+ just released a family-friendly mystery thriller called “ Home Before Dark ” that we can stream now. Here to tell us all about this new show is Brooklyn Prince and Jim Sturgess. You can see 9-year-oldBrooklyn as Hilde and Jim as her father in the series.

Please note, we recorded this episode before the Globes & Critics Choice Awards, where Willem Dafoe went from Oscar favorite to an underdog to Sam Rockwell. We begin by naming that good ole’ indie film feeling, we warn good parents about watching it, and then we handle some obligatory State of the Pod information to bring you up to date on our plans. Our OSP takes off with a Cast & Crew overview including a bio/filmography of Willem Dafoe, and then we chronicle how the co-writer and director, Baker decided upon the film and how he discovered their cast. Hint, they found one of the actresses on something that rhymes with schminstagram. Did you guess FaceBook? It wasn’t FaceBook. The production profile continues with some real history on the issue at the center of the film and discuss how you can help one of the charitable organizations. Do visit the link to donate. http://hope192.com/ We also chronicle stories from behind the scenes, including serendipitous visits by the local wildlife and a crew-wide standing ovation after one particular scene. The Non-Spoiler review raves over the talents of the filmmaker, but we debate whether it’s indie film charms should equate to oscar recognition at the end of the day, or if it’s just a great use of the micro budget by the auteur, Sean Baker. The Willem Dafoe performance sparks some intense consideration of whether it should be an Oscar favorite, and we do hit on some of the pros and cons of the rest of the inexperienced cast. Finally, we begin a debate about the nature of parental abuse that we’ll flush out in the spoiler section. We finish our debate on the parental abuse involved here, and this unlocks some of our review in the spoiler section. The mother/daughter relationship is at the core of the story, and we recap the highs, lows, and WTF moments of that emotional roller coaster. Then it’s Best & Worst scene time, where we highlight some of the best Willem Dafoe, Bria Vinaite, and Brooklyn Prince have to offer. Finally, it’s time to discuss THAT ending, we have another fun debate, and we grade the film. Do contact us on social media. Do please help us spread the word on our podcast. We thank you for all your cooperation and support over these past few weeks, and we’re proud of the jump in our listening numbers. We’ll continue to finish these Oscar Sprint Profiles, update you on Hollywood news including the announcements of the Oscar Noms on 1/23, and then we’ll use the month of February to prepare you for the big show in early March. When reality sucks, watch movies with us. We’re Mike, Mike, and Oscar!
Critic's Choice Award; Brooklyn Prince award speech; Mark Wahlberg negotiated well with his agent. Old cereal test
This week we had the absolute pleasure of talking to both Willem Dafoe and Sean Baker, the star and the director of The Florida Project, one of the year's most unexpected cinematic delights. Baker's direction flirts with fantasy and realism to create a potent mix of heart-warming and heart-breaking scenes that introduce at least two previously unseen acting talents in Dafoe's co-stars, Brooklyn Prince and Bria Vinaite. Autumn is well and truly here in the UK, but The Florida Project brings a little of that Sunshine State warmth to November. On today's show: Film director Sean Baker and film critic Piers Marchant. First, a very recent conversation I had with filmmaker Sean Baker. I was so taken with Sean Baker's 2015 film TANGERINE, famously and beautifully shot from an Apple iPhone, that I started tracking down his earlier work, four fascinating films, including two brilliantly-executed micro-budget indies, 2004's TAKE OUT set in the world of NYC Chinese food delivery, and 2008's PRINCE OF BROADWAY, about an African immigrant selling knock-off designer bags who is unexpectedly left alone with a baby that might be his son. Baker's 2012 film STARLET centered around a friendship between an elderly widow and a sweet up-and-coming adult film star, played by Muriel Hemingway's daughter, Dree. But it was the 2015 film TANGERINE that was Baker's breakthrough, hitting the zeitgeist right as transgender issues were making big news and following two streetwalkers on a wild and unapologetic 24-hour tour through the Hollywood strip, and featuring incredible performances from first-time actresses Mya Taylor and Kitana Kiki Rodriguez. The pair were later part of the first Academy Award campaigns for openly transgender actresses. Now Baker follows-up TANGERINE with THE FLORIDA PROJECT, a fascinating ramble around the world of budget motels in Kissimmee, Florida. The film is mostly seen from the perspective of six year old Moonee, played by newcomer Brooklyn Prince and through her eyes, the rundown, kitschy motels and gaudy tourist traps seem just as enchanted as Disney's Magic Kingdom one town over. Her mother is played by Bria Vinaite who gives a downright feral performance as Moonee's loving but distracted mom and Willem Defoe exercises his compassionate side as the diplomatic motel manager Bobby. It's a film that vibrates with real life and its episodic quality allows the tightening dynamics of the plot to escape notice until its emotionally-tumultuous finale. It's also a film that captures childhood more vividly than any film in recent history as well as further exploring the themes of work, morality and people on society's fringes that is the hallmark of Baker's ever-more impressive filmography. I was given a chance to talk to Baker just before THE FLORIDA PROJECT screened at the Philadelphia Film Festival and when I saw the schedule I realized I was given 20 minutes just before Baker was due to walk on the festival's red carpet for a Saturday evening featured screening. I found Baker to be completely direct and unpretentious and would have loved to have him on for a more leisurely interview but as it was I was able to squeeze a few more minutes out of him for a half-hour of conversation. We talk about Baker's New Jersey roots, discovering Cassavetes, Ken Loach and the Dardenne Brothers, working with first-time actors, 70s Hollywood film, The Our Gang series, shooting on video and film and knowing how the movie is going to end. After the interview we'll go to an even more recent discussion with film critic Piers Marchant from PHILADELPHIA MAGAZINE and The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. Piers and I get into a much more leisurely conversation, discussing Baker and THE FLORIDA PROJECT but also, BLADE RUNNER 2049, The Coen Brothers, George Lucas, the state of modern Hollywood and some of our favorite films of the 2017.
