Episode 269 features former Major League Baseball pitcher, Bill Pulsipher, telling his story to help others, Bubb'n Mutha's founder, John Fuhrman dishing out barbecue and baseball talk, Leonard rants, and we celebrate our show's seven year anniversary. Bill Pulsipher is one third of what New York Mets fans once knew as "Generation K." It was a moniker he shared with his two other teammates, Jason Isringhausen and Paul Wilson. The media dubbed them as the members and the fans, desperate for players to help their team, bought into the hype. The amount of pressure this placed on Bill and the other two Generation K members was extreme and Bill tells all, including a career derailed by injuries and severe depression. Bill spent parts of six Major League Baseball seasons with the New York Mets, Milwaukee Brewers, Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox, and St. Louis Cardinals. We tend to put these talented athletes on pedestals and revere them as heroes, but pulling back the curtain reveals they are as human as everyone else and, after listening to Bill's story you may have a new appreciation for what some of them deal with. John Fuhrman is the founder of Bubb'n Mutha's which manufactures premium spice rub blends. After serving in the United States Navy, John, worked in the auto industry and ended up in North Carolina. While there he fell in love with barbecue and learned how to cook it and experimented with different spices and rubs. John returned to Maine and started this company, making his products with special real Maine ingredients like organic blueberry powder, maple crystals and even Raye's Mustard which is the oldest mustard company in America. John loves baseball and barbecue and we delve deeply into both topics. For more information on John or to order his products go to https://www.bubnmuthas.com We conclude the show with the song, Baseball Always Brings You Home from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky. Matt Abdoo from Pig Beach BBQ, Ray Negron from the New York Yankees, and John Fuhrman, founder of Bubb'n Mutha's makes this another huge triple episode. Matt Abdoo is the executive chef and partner of Pig Beach BBQ and he joins us to discuss the 4th annual Jeff Michner Foundation BBQ Benefit taking place at Pig Beach in Queens, New York on Saturday, April 27, 2024. Jeff Michner was Matt's brother-in-law and he passed away at the age of 36, leaving behind his wife Sara, and his 16-month-old daughter Hayes. A foundation was created in Jeff's honor to keep his memory alive. The organization embraces the things he loved best: family, friends, and great food. The Jeff Michner Foundation supports families managing loss and grief and provides scholarships to graduating high school students with a love for cooking and golf, two of Jeff's biggest passions in life. The Jeff Michner BBQ Benefit celebrates Jeff with an epic barbecue featuring some of the countries greatest pitmasters. Go to https://www.pigbeachnyc.com/events/ for more information. Ray Negron is an executive in the New York Yankees organization. His position with the Yankees is impressive, but the story of how he achieved all of his success is incredible. It is a story based on someone taking a chance on Ray when he was behaving badly and could have ended up in jail, but instead this person offered Ray a job as the Yankees batboy. That moment changed not only Ray's life, but possibly, as you will hear Ray tell, the lives of many other people. The someone who took the chance on Ray was George Steinbrenner AKA "The Boss" and the storis Ray tells about Mr. Steinbrenner and the entire Yankees organization, which he has been a part of for the last 50 years, is fascinating and heart-warming. For more information on Ray Negron go to https://theraynegronstory.com/index.html John Fuhrman is the founder of Bubb'n Mutha's which manufactures premium spice rub blends. Sir Stephen Bubbs remarkable journey from a union representative to a leading advocate for charity CEOs and their organisation's is a testament to his unwavering commitment to positive change and the sector. We explore his decades-long advocacy for the 'Third Sector,' his influential role in shaping government policies, and his latest mission to establish the world's first-ever Research Institute dedicated to charity at New College Oxford. Championing the 'Third Sector': For decades, Sir Stephen fearlessly challenged authority and championed the cause of the charity sector. He shares anecdotes of standing up to the UK Prime Minister via a Minister when he believed that the government's actions were a smokescreen for funding cuts. With unwavering support from his board and the sector, Sir Stephen refused to back down from his criticisms, firmly believing in defending the sector's interests. Sir Stephen's tenure as the Chief Executive of ACEVO (Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations) spanned fifteen influential years until 2016. In this role, he wielded significant influence in shaping government policies related to the third sector's involvement in delivering public services. During his time at ACEVO, one significant challenge Sir Stephen faced was battling misconceptions about overhead costs in the charity sector. He emphasised the importance of core costs and reserves, underlining those successful charities, like any other organisations, require resources for effective governance and leadership. Sir Stephen's mission extends beyond financial matters; he aims to change perceptions about charities. The stereotype of charities as small-scale, volunteer-driven entities is being challenged. Charities play a vital role in society, deserving serious academic attention. Leaving ACEVO, Sir Stephen embarked on a new mission to launch a research institute for charity, what has become the Gradel Institute of Charity at New College Oxford, named after the investment leader Chris Gradel, co-founder of the successful Pacific Investment Group. The Gradel Institute of Charity is set to be a pioneering institution on a global scale. Unlike many research centres focused primarily on philanthropy and giving, this institute places a unique emphasis on charities as organisations. It prioritises leadership, governance, and impact assessment—often overlooked but crucial elements for an organization's success. Beyond Research: They aim to bridge the education gap by offering graduate and postgraduate programs, filling a void in academia. Sir Stephen believes that despite people's enthusiasm for charity work, there has been a lack of structured education to support their aspirations. Sir Stephen's commitment to philanthropy and compassionate leadership shines through his diverse portfolio of roles. He chaired the Social Investment Business, the UK's largest social investor, and served as a trustee at the Helen and Douglas House Hospice, recognized as the world's first children's hospice. National Influence: Sir Stephen's influence extends beyond the charitable sector. He played a pivotal role in shaping national policies, including reporting on choice and competition in the NHS for the Prime Minister in 2011. In 2014, his major report titled 'Winterbourne View – Time for Action' advocated for radical reforms in the care of individuals with learning disabilities. His national roles at TGWU, NUT, AMA, and his founding role at the National Lottery Charities Board further underscore his dedication to public service and advocacy. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mark-longbottom2/message

In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we talked with Mary Gehring from MIT about her work on transgenerational inheritance and epigenetic imprinting in plants. Mary Gehring and her team are focusing on plant epigenetics and genetic imprinting in plants, studying DNA methylation in Arabidopsis. They have found significant differences in DNA methylation between the embryo and endosperm of plants, particularly in relation to imprinted genes. She also discusses their work on hydroxymethylcytosine (5-hmC) in Arabidopsis and the challenges of detecting and studying this epigenetic modification. Next, we discuss the regulatory circuit involving ROS1, a DNA glycosylase involved in demethylation, and its role in maintaining epigenetic homeostasis. The interview concludes with a discussion of CUT&RUN, which the lab has adapted for use in plants. Due to its low input requirements this method has been valuable in studying various plant tissues and has influenced Mary Gehring's research on imprinting in Arabidopsis endosperm. Timestamps: 1:39 - The freedom of entrepreneurship 11:25 - Getting access to deals in the 00s 17:15 - Borrowing money to invest in startups 34:12 - Team and timing 43:43 - The Swiss tendency to miss out About Philippe Bubb & Martin Altorfer: Philippe Bubb and Martin Altorfer are the co-founders of session.vc, a fund investing in early stage companies in the software and consumer space. Philippe has an MBA in Business Administration and Finance from HSG and previously worked as a financial analyst. He also co-founded several companies, namely the wealth management boutique IFS, BCAP AG and Focus Capital. Martin is a serial entrepreneur, with companies like Celeris AG, replica GmbH, BCAP AG and Active-Net under his belt. Philippe and Martin have been angel investors for over two decades. Back in the 00s, there was hardly a structured approach to finding and securing deals: you just had to keep your eyes open, speak with lots of people, and take opportunities as they came. In the case of the ON founders, whom they invested in, there existed already a previous friendship. As for the money they invested, Martin made use of the money he made when selling his first company Active-Net at 29, whereas Philippe took out a loan from his parents (this is a setup he definitely does not recommend). Philippe and Martin pride themselves on being active investors, but they also make a point of showing that an active investor does not equal a founder. In the past, they made the mistake of accruing too much responsibility on the operational side, which shielded the actual founders from the true hardship of entrepreneurship. Nowadays Martin and Philippe make an effort to preserve some distance. In 2019 they founded Session VC. Their fund focuses on the software and consumer space because these are the industries that Martin and Philippe understand best, and it focuses on early stage companies because this is the phase they find most fascinating and in which they believe they can contribute the most. Together they've also created Session Lab, where they discuss interesting topics and later either find a founder who will pick that project up or a founder who is already doing something similar, whom they can invest in. When investing, Martin and Philippe look for a good team and the right timing. They don't think the idea is crucial — just look at ON, a running shoe company. They consider it a red flag if the founders have day jobs or if their cap tables look a mess (50 angels, 7 convertibles, etc…). On the last episode of the season, Dr. Daniel Bubb shares a very personal account of what it was like to lose his father to stage 4 pancreatic cancer. He addresses some of the reasons why the "Death with Dignity" bill should have been passed here in Nevada. It is a bill that would allow competent adults with a terminal illness to request a prescription that would allow them to end their life at the place and time of their choosing. Dr. Bubb also shares some backlash the bill faced from religious groups/organizations, and we compare human euthanasia to animal euthanasia. This episode is in loving memory of Ken Bubb.
