Joe Root's side will need to take eight wickets to win the Test and series. Due to the washout Simon Mann took the opportunity to chat with summariser Carlos Brathwaite and asked him to answer some of our listeners' questions. Inevitably much of the discussion surrounded the World T20 Final in 2016 when he hit four successive sixes in the final over to lead West Indies to victory against England. Jonathan Agnew presents from Old Trafford where England are on the verge of a series win over West Indies following the third day of the deciding Test. Stuart Broad’s six wickets across two innings have not only brought Joe Root’s side close to victory but also left the bowler just one away from 500 career Test wickets. His four in four overs had the tourists 197 all out, 172 behind. England later declared on 226-2 with Rory Burns hitting 90 and Dom Sibley and Root scoring 56 and 68 respectively to set Jason Holder’s side a target of 399. But thanks to Broad's efforts with the ball, the tourists finished on 10-2 in their second innings at the close. Aggers, Michael Vaughan and Carlos Brathwaite discuss the action while Simon Mann gets the thoughts of Burns and Roston Chase. “What story are we telling about America?” – Washington’s NFL team agree to change their name. We discuss the Washington Redskins decision to change their controversial name and logo following years of opposition from Native American communities and recent pressure from major club sponsors. Mark Trahant - who is a member of Idaho’s Shoshone-Bannock Tribe and editor of Indian Country Today - tells us the name was offensive because “it came from the era when natives were sold by body parts”. He also recalls being told by his father as a six year old boy not to use the ‘R word’ and he believes all teams that use Native American words and symbols will eventually have to change their names. The “Washington Red Tails” is among the favourites to be the team’s next name and we’re joined by Martin McCauley, who owns the trademark to that name along with a host of others. The Washington fan tells us all about his unusual hobby of trademarking potential team names, how he won’t stand in Washington’s way if they want to use one of his names and he explains why he’s hired a lawyer this week. The former NBA player calling for the current season to be abandoned - Etan Thomas played for the Washington Wizards, Oklahoma City Thunder and Atlanta Hawks during his professional career. He's now calling on NBA commissioner Adam Silver to cancel the current season due to the risks associated with playing during the Covid-19 pandemic. Thomas says of Silver "Valuing the lives of human beings over economic motivations is a concept that is absent from Donald Trump. You are not him." He also tells us it’s “tragic” that Elena Delle Donne, who suffers from chronic Lyme Disease, was denied the opportunity to opt out of the upcoming WNBA season. 2082 miles on an exercise bike while shielding from coronavirus and battling stage 4 bowel cancer - Keith Farquharson recently completed the 2018 Tour de France course on an exercise bike to raise money for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation. He chose the 2018 course as that was the year he was first off work with cancer and he watched the race live on TV. He says he juggled the virtual race, with working full-time, a young family and having cancer treatment. We check in on the second test between England and West Indies. Former West Indies T20 captain Carlos Brathwaite joins us to discuss the latest action in the test, the series so far and living in a bio-secure bubble in order to be at the ground. Following a big week off the pitch for Manchester City we’re joined by broadcaster Natalie Paweleck to discuss the club’s FA Cup semi-final against Arsenal, the clubs hopes of ending this season with three trophies and if their victory at CAS could see Pep Guardiola extend his stay as manager. And this week’s Sporting Witness tells the story of David Beckham signing for LA Galaxy in Major League Soccer back in 2007. Remember the name, remember the game. On a hot, steamy evening in Kolkata, West Indies and England provided a finish that was made for television, made for drama and will be replayed in minds for some time to come. The sight of Carlos Brathwaite standing tall and launching Ben Stokes, and with him England, to defeat, was something else. But the game was not just about that big finish. The West Indies team were deservedly favourites in the tournament. Packed with the kind of players who excel in Twenty20 cricket the team had all the resources to go all the way. But, with a sub-par total in the final, there was every chance they would falter at the final hurdle. Fortunately for them, Samuels was in a mood to drag his team over the line with sheer willpower. But he could not have gone all the way. For that, the West Indies needed Brathwaite's cheerful fury. The excitement on the field did threaten to boil over into something less savoury however. The manner in which the West Indies players gave every England batsman a send off with the Champions song and dance routine, irked a few. But, what really changed things was Samuels's anger. Even in victory there seemed to be little joy to be had, and even after the game was done, Samuels was seething. Eventually the International Cricket Council would step in with sanctions. And this episode of the podcast brings out those contrasting perspectives. While Anand Vasu had little time for the antics of Samuels and some of the others, Bharat Sundaresan tries to explain the thought process that led to the eventual outburst. Where do you stand? With the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 entering its third week, equations have started changing, thanks to some strong performances, a few upsets, and also some heartbreaks. Bangladesh chased down a massive 322-run target against Windies on Shakib Al Hasan's century. Later, they repeated the show against Australia, even more emphatically, but fell short of the target by 49 runs. England scored a mountain of runs against Afghanistan — only three runs shy of the 400-mark — and won easily. But the same side failed to chase a not-so-great target of 233 runs against Sri Lanka, as Lasith Malinga scalped four wickets. Surprisingly, a formidable Indian batting line-up, with greats like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and M S Dhoni faced a reality check, with minnows Afghanistan first restricting them to just 224 runs and then nearly chasing the target. If India were able to save their blushes, they had Jasprit Bumrah’s precision and Mohammed Shami’s last-minute havoc to thank for it. Meanwhile, New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson calmly took his team to victory in crucial matches against South Africa and West Indies, with a century in each match.
