Last year the (16-7) Cam Cougars Girls Basketball team ended their season in the Class 1A Region 5 Quarterfinal against Tri-Center. That same team had a solid showing in the 2022-23 season going 11-5 in conference play and finishing third in the Rolling Valley Conference. Even with the season ending shorter than expected, Cougars Head Coach Joe Wollum is looking forward to bringing a majority of that team back. https://www.kjan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/CAM-Girls-16-7-Squad.mp3 This past offseason has been dedicated to increasing tempo and speed for the Cougars. Coach Wollum wants to make sure that CAM stays sharp and speedy. He's been training his team that even when you have a basket scored on you. Respond without hesitation and try to match it as quickly as you can. https://www.kjan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/CAM-Girls-Offseason.mp3 When it comes to speed and quick responses, one of the key players for the Cougars this year is senior Eva Steffensen. Steffensen is coming off a dominant junior year as she was the only player in the Rolling Valley Conference with over 70 assists, 50 blocks, and 50 steals. https://www.kjan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/CAM-Girls-Eva.mp3 Steffensen is not the only contributor returning to the Cougars. Senior Meredith Rich comes into the season scoring over 250 points last year and 29 made threes. Emma Follmann is another player who adds experience for CAM with playing in all 23 games. Follmann also helped with rebounds having 98 last year. The talent and experience are there for CAM this year. So, Coach Wollum's main focus is to play fast and with intensity. He believes that with the veteran core taking the floor this year and how swift the Cougars will be it will create a high level of basketball. https://www.kjan.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/CAM-Girls-Expectations-on-the-season.mp3 The Cougars first game of the season starts at home, on Tuesday November 21st against AHSTW at 7:30pm.

For the landscape and the people (9.00)Ado thrives on the cultural exchange that takes place between Nations as part of his work now, something colonization deprived his community of. He is passionate about helping children access culture freely. Work that heals (14.40)Victor notes that working with the country helps liberate Aboriginal peoples from stereotypes that they are not hardworking. Work that heals the land for the future inspires youth to do the right thing to enhance their connection with the land. “Climate change is mother nature telling us to change” (19.17)Victor laments that the negative messaging in the media makes us feel helpless against climate change. He brings attention to the disasters humans have lived through, and that this can also be salvaged by “doing the good work”. When you care for the country, it cares back (28.23)Ado reassures that cultural burning is safe, which is why many go barefoot for a cultural burn. He feels a sense of oneness with all inhabitants of the land, and disagrees with preferential protective equipment for humans but not for the other animals. Fire, language and country (33.11)Ado narrates how Victor demonstrated to Ado's Nation, his knowledge of the land that applies across different territories. Victor adds that landscapes have many similarities in values, and bringing the country back is the missing piece in reviving cultural knowledge. Let us do it our way (38.48)Ado speaks about the National Indigenous Fire Workshop they conducted for nations across Australia, where they did a cultural burn which lasted 13 days. Not having burned due to colonization has changed the landscape, and is causing sickness in the forests. The whole world gets affected (47.33)Ado says that knowledge opens up minds with the truth but it makes it more difficult to tolerate the wrong things being done. Everyone was impacted by the large bushfires in Australia, and he feels strongly about people experiencing the benefits of cultural burning.

Are you a yoga convert like me? Maybe you've fleetingly considered some yoga classes to improve your flexibility, and maybe you've decided that you just don't have time with all the swim, bike and run you're already doing. That was me, but I am now a yoga disciple! What I didn't realise until I started to invest some time in this aspect of my wellness is that yoga is so much more than just a “bit of stretching”. That's what we're exploring with today's High Performance Human podcast guest, Kirsten Steffensen. Kirsten is the life partner of my former business partner, Jack Maitland. What do you get when you have a best mate who you get to pick his brain about the legends he got to share the diamond with before you get to interview that legend, over coffee in the kitchen?... A surprise Episode 25 of Beyond the Dugout with very special guest Chris Steffensen. Chrispy to most has won all but one club title in NZ Softball, a Two Time NFC Champion, One time Club National Champion (as he likes to say the last time PK won the Clubs) he has played the game at most levels with some of the best to ever play the game. From early days in Totara Park to Hutt City United before getting tapped on the shoulder by the great one Mark Sorenson to play for Cardinals and then being part of a new era of PK Softball plus a couple of stints in the ISCs to be full circle back to Totara Park. Should he have been mentioned in with some of the greats after a very promising young career, YES! But life gets in the way and Chris gets very honest about how a young talents attitude & mind can change in the game & what he has learned looking back. Now a Deputy Principal, Chris has a gift to communicate with a teaching nature and that's why Damian is so proud that he got him back into Softball after some time away from the game, going back to their junior club. Now he is combining his new love of softball with his skills of teaching & it truly is something special to see. This week what it's about, just mates talking some ball, sharing thoughts & journey's, easy to do when you're in each other's bubble.   So, sit back and enjoy Beyond The Dugout with hosts Jason Gerbes aka Chopper & Damian Collins bringing weekly guests from the best that Fastpitch Softball has ever seen. Summary: This episode covers a lot of ground!  As Taruno says “trauma & addiction” are two sides of the same coin and in order for successful treatment both have to be addressed in the individual. Taruno speaks in depth about how trauma is an incomplete cycle of energy that resides in the body and needs to be discharged for the person in need to not be driven by the primal trauma responses of “fight or flight” or shut down ”immobilization” response. He says “all addiction is an attempt to regulate the nervous system” and this is at the root of why addiction occurs. He shares practical tools and tips as well shares many other modalities that one can begin to implement to not be at the mercy of trauma symptoms and live happily in your body.    More about Taruno Steffensen:  Taruno Steffensen has personally been in recovery for over 28 years and made it his life's work to help others in recovery to experience healing from the root cause of addiction— trauma. Taruno is a licensed alcohol and drug counselor, certified sex addiction therapist and Somatic Experiencing (SE) practitioner. Taruno has personally studied and learned from the of the best doctors, researchers, practitioners and healers such as Peter Levine, Bessel van der Kolk, Pia Melody and many more. Taruno worked for The Meadows, a world renowned facility in Arizona for the treatment of addiction and trauma.
