Welcome to the final episode of the "Technically Human" season! We're ending the season with an episode of the 22 lessons on ethics and technology series, with a conversation featuring Dr. John Williams about the global imagination of tech. Dr. John Williams is a professor of English Literature at Yale University. His work is focused on international histories of technological/media innovation and the perceived difference of racial and cultural otherness. His book, The Buddha in the Machine: Art, Technology, and The Meeting of East and West (Yale University Press, 2014), examines the role of technological discourse in representations of Asian/American aesthetics in late-nineteenth and twentieth-century film and literature.  The book won the 2015 Harry Levin Prize from the American Comparative Literature Association. In the conversation, we explore the diverse international histories of technological innovation and how otherness and differences have been constructed across contexts and time. The “22 Lessons in Ethical Technology” series is co-sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the Cal Poly Strategic Research Initiative Grant Award. The show is written, hosted, and produced by me, Deb Donig, with production support from Matthew Harsh and Elise St. John. Thanks to Jake Garner and Emma Zumbro for production coordination. This week, we continue our “22 Lessons on Ethics and Technology series” with a conversation with Dr. John Basl about how our relationship with tech is changing what he calls an “ethic of life, an ethical perspective on which all living things deserve some level of moral concern. Professor Basl is an associate professor of philosophy in the department of philosophy & religion at Northeastern University and a faculty associate at the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics and the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University. He works primarily in moral philosophy and applied ethics, especially on issues related to emerging technologies. He is an editorial board member for the new journal AI and Ethics. His most recent book, The Death of the Ethic of Life, is available from Oxford University Press.  And that's all for this season! We are staying off our technologies for the winter break—we'll be back with more episodes of the Technically Human podcast in 2023. Hey Technically Human listeners! We're very excited to introduce a special series of episodes that we'll run throughout the year—“22 Lessons on Ethical Technology for the 21st Century.” The series features 22 of the most important thinkers at the intersection of tech, ethics, and human values, from around the world. Jason Lewis and I talk about indigenous knowledge and technology. And more! Over the series of these 22 interviews, we hope to bring you a panoramic picture of how technology is changing what it means to be human—and how essential features of human society--like art, culture, philosophy, politics, and justice are entangled with tech culture and production. Do you feel like you're stuck in a rut as a podcast editor? Does it seem like you're never able to land a new client? Or worse, that you're attracting the wrong clients? Maybe you feel like you're spinning your wheels, or you know you're getting some traction on social media or traffic to your website, but it never seems to convert. It doesn't turn into anything. If that's the case, it's possible that you need to look at your branding - to make sure that it's speaking directly to that ideal client you want to meet. Sure, it can be scary (and humbling) to think about blowing up the brand you spent months or years building. But if that's what's keeping you from getting some traction, it might be time to take a look at that. Listen to discover what's leading a couple of our beloved Yetis to step into the process of rebranding, hear what they're thinking about (and afraid of), and discover some keys that might help you avoid the same mistakes we've made. What we discussedWhat is branding, really? What are some indications that it might be time to rebrand? What should we watch out for? How important is a mission statement in branding? But the downside of Survivor Bias is that it's possible we might toil for years on the faulty assumption that something's possible. Or that the way it's always been done is the right way to do it. “Creativity is thinking up new things. Innovation is doing new things.“― Theodore LevittPivot is a popular word in the start-up world. A pivot means fundamentally changing the direction of a business when you realize the current products or services aren't meeting the needs of the market. It's a fact that most entrepreneurial firms fail. For an entrepreneur, the idea that you can pivot and survive is critically important.  Since most podcasts https://squadcast.fm/blog/overcoming-podfade (podfade), we'd better pivot too. This week, I read Carrie Caulfield Arick's piece entitled, “https://carrie-25561.medium.com/why-the-podcasting-industry-creates-podfade-ii-the-creative-7f26b814fae6 (F*ck Consistency. I'll take quality over it any day of the week. Fight me.)” It was good to get a different perspective on the 3C's of podcasting: content, consistency, and community. Carrie says the podcast industry is too rigid in putting consistency first. It got me thinking. Publishing for the sake of consistency may make us less likely to listen to our audience and less willing to pivot.  How often have you made significant changes to your show? Probably not often enough. I've been publishing weekly for 4.5 years without taking a break. Seasonal breaks would provide time to listen, reflect, and refresh. I admit that my weekly production schedule does not give me much time to think or act strategically. Consistency is meeting expectations in the present. We are told that listeners come to expect a new episode on a regular schedule. They thrive on consistency and predictability so it's essential that you deliver it if you want to grow your audience. But has your growth stalled? Have your downloads plateaued? Here is the problem. If you are only consistent and not innovating, you will get the same results. Another thing we tend to do as podcasters is emulate bigger podcasts. What if like some big corporations, big podcasters are too content with where they are and at risk of losing touch with their rapidly changing environment. Think Blockbuster, Radio Shack, Toys R Us – retail leaders that collapsed in the last decade. Indie podcasters have a tendency to follow established behaviors that may have at one time brought success. What if they now result in failure? Our time is too short to be another me-too, water-downed podcast. We must be nimble podcasters who are willing to push boundaries and disrupt ourselves. Innovation is meeting expectations in the future. For an example of a podcast pivot, I present my friends Steve and Veronica. After publishing 108 episodes of https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/pod-sound-school/id1452753789 (Pod Sound School), they've done the unthinkable and said goodbye to their beloved podcast. As full-time content creators and business owners, they explain that they've grown out of their podcast. They realized that their thing is not only podcasting – it's just one skill set among many. Case in point, their https://www.youtube.com/podsoundschool (YouTube channel) currently has 55.6K subscribers. They're fabulous video creators. They will soon rebrand their podcast as “Content Jefe Podcast by the Pod Sound School.” This innovation is worth emulating! Analyze your audience and your strengths. Decide where you want to go together. Pivot! You'd be wrong to think that prices are based on a simple equation. You'd also be wrong if you think podcasters want the packages you're selling right now. The joy of a new, dynamic industry like ours is also it's curse: We are constantly having to adapt creative minds and their new ideas.   So what strategies do you use to determine what to provide clients and what that service is worth?    Mailbag: Do you have a system for creating packages and prices? We'd love to hear from you. (because Carrie really wants to do a mailbag/AMA episode)   We learned a few things throughout this episode, but one of them was how much strategies vary from editor to editor.  That editors are constantly re-evaluating and refining offerings and rates. And that packages rarely seem to suit podcasters (which is something to explore on its own in a future episode).    When you quoted your first client, did you pull a number out of the air?    If you did it's normal. We aren't MBAs. We're editors– part artists, part techies– who had this wild idea to invent a job that is challenging, flexible and rewarding. That's why we started this show: to work through these sorts of things with our community… to mastermind with you. We asked our live audience what models they used and shared our own. Here were the answers...  Hourly  Per Episode  Day Rates  Project-based Value-based   We also covered the pros and cons of various billing cycles. Surprisingly, some of are moving away from monthly billing.    Scope Creep and a la carte packages   It was pretty well agreed that no one package is right for the majority of podcasters. There's always something that's not quite right. Or a podcaster wants more than agreed to without, ahem, wanting to pay for it. A la carte and a clear contract may be your best bet for staving off scope creep. If you're like us, you have things to say about what we talked about in this episode. Do you ever find yourself wondering if you're good enough as a podcast editor? Or maybe struggling to raise your rates even though you know you need to? We all do. Or at least most of us do. And for one reason… Fear. You thought I was going to say “imposter syndrome” and you're right. But at the root, it's fear. Fear that you're not good enough. Fear that you'll be judged. Fear that a potential client may turn you down. Fear that… What does that mean little bully of a voice say to you? Here's the point, though. If we all face it, then we shouldn't face it alone. We should be honest with ourselves and others when we find safe spaces to share what's going on between our ears. This week Heather Wester joins us to share her journey as a podcast producer at https://www.ironedoutmedia.com/ (Ironed Out Media). She shares some ups and some downs as well. And, as you'll learn, she struggles with imposter syndrome too. Listen to discover:  How Impostor Syndrome has affected each of us. How Impostor Syndrome will even bring fear into what is clearly a success. How Heather's background gave her a head-start with podcast production. How a dare led to Heather being an Affiliate Producer for a popular radio program. How discovering nuances within podcasting forced her to grow. How a dose of humility is vastly different from tearing yourself down. The value of taking things one step at a time. A question you can ask yourself to reframe whether you'll listen to that evil little voice in your head. As you listen, you're sure to find something powerful in Heather's story - whether you're trying to make sense out of your journey as a podcast editor, just getting started, or trying to figure out how to break through a limiting belief that's holding you back. This was a truly wonderful conversation, and we're so happy that Heather was willing to share her journey, her successes, and her struggles with us. Podcast editors: Do you want more clients? If you're like most of us, you're almost always on the lookout for new clients and new ways to attract and connect with them so that we can grow our businesses. But what happens when we attract the WRONG clients? Well, it's not good. It can ruin our businesses and our lives. Literally. But it doesn't have to be that way. Listen as Britany Felix of https://podcastingforcoaches.com (Podcasting for Coaches) joins us to share what she's learned about attracting the right clients (for her), how she manages relationships with professionalism but keeps the boundaries clear, how she screens clients (hint...it can start well before your first conversation), and how she knows when it's time to make a drastic change. Listen to discover: The story of a client who was such a bad fit, one error ruined a vacation, damaged trust irreparably, and sometimes still has her looking for a place to hide. That you really CAN set your own rules for how you'd like to work with your clients. Not only WHO you'd like to work with but also how quickly you'll turn around their edits, and even what happens if they are late with their files. One change that Britany made to ensure she never gets a bad-fit client again. The red flags Britany looks for when she's on an initial call. How Britany stands out from the crowd when she's responding to a prospective client. Her uncommon approach to pricing her editing services. How Britany now often has people paying her LONG BEFORE she ever considers working with them as an editor. How she manages https://www.wrike.com/project-management-guide/faq/what-is-scope-creep-in-project-management/ (scope creep) and resets expectations when needed. And much, much more. Carrie and I discuss having a child with autism, being raised in a family with older kids, a mom from Denmark and the devastating diagnosis of her husband. http://yayapodcasting.com/ (http://yayapodcasting.com) https://www.instagram.com/carriearick/ (https://www.instagram.com/carriearick/) https://www.facebook.com/yayapodcasting/ (https://www.facebook.com/yayapodcasting/) https://www.linkedin.com/in/carrie-caulfield-arick/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/carrie-caulfield-arick/) In her words: I'm a mom to an autism kiddo (now 18) and my husband who received a devastating diagnosis in 2010 that required the removal of part of his skill, dead brain tissue and part of the cervical spine. This meant we went from being comfortable financially to dirt poor. My hubby now suffers from chronic pain and cognitive issues. I had to step up, so I began picking up gigs teaching scrapbook page design and started a memory keeping podcast that paid for itself and helped me establish my authority in the niche. Then, in 2016 my son began his struggle with strep throat. He peaked at 3 strep infections a month. At the same time, his school was absolutely awful, restraining him for any reason at all. so every day I was literally at school for something. They reclassified him as emotionally disturbed without any evaluation (totally against IDEA laws). So, I had to drop everything to advocate and fight the system for him. I ended up getting him placed in special private school for special needs kids. By then, we were eking out a living on my hubby's disability and my child support. When my son was settled and there was no more AND I finally stopped waiting for the other shoe to drop, I went back to work... and honestly, a fight with my hubby kicked me in the butt because I realized that I had no out if needed (and I left my first marriage pregnant with the clothes on my back, so I wasn't doing that ever again). I started picking up graphic design jobs on Upwork... and I tested the waters to see if I could get paid for my podcasting knowledge... turns out, I could. I started my business, Ya Ya Podcasting, officially in 2018. I produce, edit, coach and provide copywriting services for podcasters. I've grown it to include 4 team members to serve our clients in under a year and now I do speaking and training and advocacy for the podcast editors and the podcasting community. Just Breathe! That’s actually the name of the talk today’s guest gave at Podcast Movement in 2019. One of the biggest mistakes new podcasters make is over-editing -- taking out every um and deleting all the breaths.    Carrie Caulfield Arick, owner of Ya-Ya Podcasting editing services; founder of the Just Busters Facebook Group for female podcast editors; and host of the podcast Just Podcasting wants us to take a deep breath and relax.   In this episode, we discuss some common audio problems and how to prevent and fix them. We’ll also share some tips and tricks to make your podcast editing go faster.     Visit sarahmikutel.com for more articles on how to podcast. Ready to start your own show? You’ll learn how they did it and get their best insider food and culture tips.    Thank you so much for listening to Podcasting Step by Step. “My clients think I’m a wizard. I don’t think they know entirely what I do. They just know that I do it…. What I actually do is polish people’s podcasts interviews to save everybody time.” ~Carrie Caulfield Arick, YaYa Podcasting Four podcast editors walk into a bar… Nah, that’s not what happened at all. We got together where you’d expect us to - on a podcast, of course!  Wait! Before you go all “Meh. I’m not an editor so why should I listen?” on this episode, hear me out. You will become a better client and a better podcaster after listening to Carrie Caulfield Arick of YaYa Podcasting, Jennifer Longworth of Bourbon Barrel Podcasting, and Podcasting For Coaches’ Britany Felix. There’s room for everyone at this podcast editors roundtable!  My guests agree that it’s difficult to make family and friends - let alone clients - understand what an editor does. Other aspects of their work are more familiar: consulting, producing, networking, teaching… there’s more; my guests are busy!  But it’s the role of editor that seems to mystify most. People have no idea what we do to make someone’s raw audio file audience-ready. In their minds, an editor either does nothing (grumble, grumble) or performs magic (thanks, but...there’s no fairy dust here).  Maybe it’s because, as humans, we’ve been talking all our lives that people think, how hard can it be to record what we say and have it come out the other end sounding intelligent and natural? If you’re not an editor, you’d be surprised. Whether you’re an intrepid DIY podcaster, a turn-key client, or just a faithful listener, you’ll want to listen in as four editor ladies get together on a podcast. Mother's Quest Podcast
Ep 50: Weaving our Ancestral Threads with Genealogist Nicka Smith

Mother's Quest Podcast

Welcome to another new episode of the Mother’s Quest Podcast, one I’m sharing after a short break, so I could focus on transitioning my children into the new academic year, welcoming in the Jewish New Year and supporting my parents as my father recovers from bypass heart surgery (he is doing much better and already plotting to get back on the golf course!) During this time of reflection and connection to family, it feels right to bring forward this episode on ancestry with Nicka Smith, a professional photographer, speaker, host, and documentarian with more than 19 years of experience as a genealogist.  I learned about Nicka through my friend and previous podcast guest Jenjii Hysten, one of Nicka’s biggest cheerleaders, who regularly acknowledges Nicka’s expertise in African ancestored genealogy and her ability to connect young people to their ancestry. Nicka’s experience and accomplishments are vast: she has edited and designed volumes of family history that include narratives, photos, and genealogical information and is the host of BlackProGen LIVE, an innovative web show focused on people of color genealogy and family history. Using Nicka’s life experience, this episode goes deep in how to give ourselves permission to step into becoming our own family historians, the importance of connecting the threads of our ancestors to who we are today, the challenges and emotions involved in tracing genealogy for African American people whose ancestors were enslaved, and the idea that we can become today the ancestors we aspire to be for our descendants by taking the political and social action our times demand.  With Nicka’s guidance, I’ve started the process of connecting the threads of my ancestors. To be honest, I was a little skeptical that I would find anything particularly interesting. But, while visiting my parents in Los Angeles, my mother and I stayed up late on the couch looking on ancestry.com at documents connected to her mother, my grandmother, Ruth.  My mother shared details about Ruth’s life in a previous episode’s dedication, that I’ll link in the show notes. We knew that her mother had married (what we say in Yiddush) a “nogoodnick” who left my grandmother destitute with three young girls to raise on her own.  That night on the couch, we found a strange named document connected to my grandmother’s records titled Hebrew Orphan Asylum of New York City. We clicked on the link and soon saw evidence that my grandmother and her youngest sister had been left in the care of an orphanage. But that some time after, my great grandmother, came back to get them. My grandmother, who was only 2 at the time, never spoke of this to us and may not have known.  But now my mother and I know that our ancestor, against the odds, found a way to reunited with her children. Had she not, my grandmother’s fate would surely have been different, and my mother and I might not have been here today.  I know now that my discoveries as my family historian are just beginning. I hope this episode and what I uncovered about my great grandmother give you permission to step into becoming your family historian, to explore the untold stories of your ancestors, and to weave the threads between yourself, your ancestors and your descendants, that will help you more fully live your E.P.I.C. life.  Much appreciation, Julie Neale In This Episode We Talk About: How a simple hobby back in college turned out to be Nicka’s passion and purpose in life. The diverse community and landscape that shaped Nicka’s worldview The layers to Nicka’s “genealogical cake” including revelations she learned about her family ancestry: the Native American blood in her family, the fact that her great great grandfather was legally married to a white woman in the late 1800’s, and that her ancestors were enslaved on the same plantation for more than 30 years by a slave-owner from western Massachusetts. Nicka’s ancestor who took great risks to advocate for his birthright as a Cherokee Freedmen to the Committee on Indian Affairs and the impact that had on Nicka. How Nicka’s 3 year old son teaches her to experiment and to explore new experiences How we can use tools like ancestry.com and a database of documents to help us explore our lineage.. The life-long trauma experienced still by Nicka’s grandmother’s grandmother, in her 90’s,  from being forcibly separated from your parents during their enslavement and how that connects to the children separated at the border today. The case of Plessy vs. Ferguson and how the descendants of slaves and slave owners now unite to fight for civil rights  The threads that connect us to who we are across generations and the ways that Nicka’s ancestors activism have shaped her own. Nicka’s challenge for me and for you to step into the role of family historian  Resources and Topics Mentioned: Nicka’s Website Black ProGenLive  – Nicka’s YouTube show with twice monthly broadcasts feature a panel from BlackProGen and friends discussing a myriad of topics in the world of genealogy. She’s spent over ten years putting together her own family tree and assists her father, historian at Seabreeze Park in Rochester, NY piece together the stories of notable park guests and employees through genealogical research. You can connect with Carrie on Facebook,  Instagram or through her website. This Week’s Challenge: Nicka challenges everyone to give yourself permission to step into the role of family historian. Sign up for an account with ancestry.com and begin with yourself to trace your family tree backward. Investigate to trace your own lineage and see how history repeats itself. Take a deep dive, and ask yourself these questions: How did we get here? Who immigrated? Why? And apply that to your present.
