Get ready to virtually experience the working world of IKEA on Roblox as the doors to the virtual store have opened. The opening of IKEA on Roblox follows a recruitment campaign launched on 3rd June, which offered people the opportunity to apply for one of 10 paid roles in the virtual store. Over 178,000 applications were received across Ireland and the UK, with 18,087 coming from Ireland. Two of the 10 successful applicants live in Ireland, in counties Dublin and Kerry. The lucky 10 applicants have now been selected and will kick off their virtual IKEA roles from today. Michael from Dublin, said, "I'm very excited and extremely happy to be chosen to be part of this new and innovative project and I can't wait to see where it goes in the long run and I hope I can be part of future projects. This current project has been fun and interesting throughout my whole experience so far." Alongside the paid players the broader Roblox community, gamers and IKEA fans are invited to explore a virtual IKEA store, wander around the home furnishings showroom and visit the famous Swedish Food Market and Bistro. Players can also venture into the IKEA world of work and take on a role as a virtual co-worker, serving up endless amounts of hotdogs and flexing their interior design skills to level-up and get promoted. All with the chance to win exclusive IKEA UGCs. Much like IKEA co-workers in real life, players in the game have the ability to develop their own unique career journey at their own pace and in any direction. Whether that be by taking on a more senior role, a move sideways into a different function developing new skills, or continuing to expand their experience in the same role. There's no set path to how you can grow your career at IKEA, where career progression is focused on helping co-workers develop their careers in their own way, and not just in a linear direction. Roles available in 'The Co-Worker' game are inspired by real-life jobs and have been curated to offer a glimpse into the opportunities available at IKEA while showcasing the brand's unique approach to careers. Roles include: 1. Sales Co-Worker - where players guide customers to products they are interested in, as well as keep the Showroom up to the IKEA standard. 2. Interior Design Co-Worker - where players are required to put together a room-set, following a design brief and pick the correct items of furniture and place them in the right places. 3. Sales Team Leader - where players recommend products to NPC customers based on their specific requirements. 4. Food Team Leader - where players will man the famous Swedish Bistro, serving food and drink to customers - meatballs anyone? Darren Taylor, Country People and Culture Manager, IKEA UK, and Ireland: "Today has been a long time coming and we're extremely excited to launch IKEA on Roblox. We are always looking for new ways to attract and inspire the next generation of co-workers to imagine a career at IKEA. 'The Co-Worker' game is a fantastic way to give players a taste of our culture and insight into what makes the world of work at IKEA so special." The 'Co-Worker' game is available now on Roblox and can be accessed using the following link:roblox.com/games/17254019855/IKEA-The-Co-Worker. See more stories here.

A ThoughtThe English Grand National was on last Saturday and I usually have a punt on a rank outsider. I’m not otherwise into betting, but the Grand National is a bit of a spectacle so it’s fun to have a stake with the rest of the family. Although my wife holds an entirely counter view, you could take the entire horse racing industry and send it to the moon for all I really care.Pundits talk about odds, and it’s supposed to be an accurate assessment of the horse’s chance of winning, but it’s really “just” the bookies’ opinion. Sure, there is the matter of recent form, the trainer’s expertise, and the skill of the jockey, but bookies sometimes get it wrong. They just need to get it right more often than not and they win. And bookies always win over the long run, just like the house always wins in Vegas, otherwise, they wouldn’t be there. So when they talk about odds, what they’re really talking about is the pattern. They are up close to the phenomenon and they are familiar with how the pattern plays out. As such, they know how prominent aspects replicate over time. They can’t know the entire pattern, no more than the rest of us can, but they are so close to it, so attentive to it, that they see more than the rest of us. There are aspects they cannot see, and there are aspects that don’t grab their attention for very long because they don’t replicate as often as others. And it is here that our winning of the bet lies. Now, if you spend the necessary time becoming familiar with the pattern, the bet is not a bet; it’s a measured, scientific assessment that occurs almost below the line of sight. It’s what we call intuition and this is so with all areas of life. If we don’t take the time to immerse ourselves in it, then the bet is just a bet. It lacks intuition, and the pursuit of the win becomes hoping and wishing. In extreme cases, it becomes almost pathological. As it is with all addictions, it is the seeking of the self in external stimulation when what we really want is the feeling that comes from already being there. As such, the only way to get it is to not chase it. You could say it’s there already, the winning of it I mean, and we don’t know that. We go after it in all kinds of places where it’s not.A Quote“Casting themselves as good actors, corporations cajole governments to free them from regulations designed to protect public interests and citizens’ wellbeing, claiming they can be trusted to regulate themselves. They take over public services like schools, water systems, and social service provision saying they will run them better and more efficiently than governments, and they push for tax cuts with promises of job and other social benefits. The result? Governments retreat from governing, corporations take greater control…” –Joel Bakan, Professor of Law at the University of British ColumbiaA BookTwo books for you this week. The first is The Corporation by the above mentioned Joel Bakan. The second, The New Corporation, is also his. As you might have guessed, the second is a sequel to the 2004 release and revisits his earlier finding that a corporation, being as it is a legal entity with the same rights as you and I, is pathological. Both books come with documentaries and you can watch the first one here. The second is on-demand and I haven’t found a screening for myself yet. If you’re not already cynical about the role corporations play in the conditions under which we live and the health of the planet, you will be after reading these books. Once you know you can’t unknow. So get ready for a healthy dose of reality. Books available here.An AlbumThe old grey Sony radio from the late 70s was always on at home growing up. It came back to Dublin with us from the Middle East and sat on the counter providing the backdrop to my youth. Phyllis always had it on, so as it comes to mind, it comes with her. If I remember right, I once blew the shit out of it attempting to cut through the black flex with a bread knife while it was still plugged in. Not sure what I was trying to do, but I survived. The bread knife and the radio didn’t. Neither did she. We had a turntable with a cassette deck that lived in the corner of the front room but it was hardly ever used. It was the kitchen radio that played the soundtrack to all those events I remember. Unremarkable events like coming in the door from school on a winter’s evening and The Petshop Boys, West End Girls playing in the background. Her peeling spuds and getting the dinner on, and Barry Lang giving it loads on Radio 2. Always good memories, never bad.So music means a lot to me, and sometimes a tune comes along and it grabs me like nothing else. This week, I want to share some new music with you. Two Irish artists came together during the lockdown and created something I think is special. Here’s an extract;Building a house or making a table is real. Making something with your hands is real. Talking with another human being and understanding their experience is real. Saving someone’s life is real. Marketing is not real — it’s an elaborate abstract game of hide-and-seek, of determining how much lies ordinary people are willing to swallow then producing it ad nauseam until they buy shit they never really wanted in the first place let alone needed. The Perversion of Work EthicThanks for taking the time to read the midweek read. Listen to sisters Ella and Amy. They're behind Kids Against Plastic and talk to us about the world's reliance on plastic, especially single use plastic, and the way we just dump it. On Wednesday they're part of the online climate change forum called ‘Race Against Climate Change’. We go to Ireland to hear about a tampon TV ad which has caused a stir, so much so it's been taken off air. Some people have been offended by it due to its straightforward description of how you use them. Two Irish women defend the ad. They're Alexandra Ryan and Ciara Kelly. After Ireland we go to India to learn about a petition which urges the Indian Prime Minister to encourage men to do their fair share of housework. So far the petition has 70,000 signatures. And we go to the jazz and soul singer, Zara McFarlane who talks about her album Songs of An Unknown Tongue. She says that her latest single called Black Treasure is a "declaration, proclamation and celebration of black Britishness and womanhood."

Welcome back to episode 14 of The Wall Podcast! Thank you for continuing to listen and if you're new here; welcome. On this one, I got to spend a few hours with Dr. Vanessa Creaven co-founder of Spotlight Oral Care which is an Irish oral care company that made its name after their Spotlight Teeth Whitening Kit took the Irish cosmetic market by storm. Vanessa and her sister, Lisa Creaven, are both dentists from Galway in Ireland. They've truly found an untouched area of the global oral care market and have developed a collection of clean, non-toxic, environmentally friendly products that make us look good on the outside, but are also good to our teeth and gums too. in this podcast, Vanessa takes us back in time to the launch of their well-known teeth whitening kit, which became a social media sensation. This product started out as something they wanted to offer their patients, but the demand began to snowball, more and more retailers have requested their product. Fast forward three years later and Vanessa - still only twenty-eight years old - announced that she and Lisa just signed with 1,000 Ulta stores across America. A coveted move for any cosmetic company and a true pinch-me moment for a brand that has come from Galway. This is not only an intriguing success story from two very smart sisters, but Vanessa also shines a light on some truth about popular oral care products on the market and the harsh reality of what many consumers are putting in their mouths. It was a real eye-opener for me! The story of Spotlight Oral Care is the epitome of what this podcast means to me; true success that stemmed from pure resilience and passion. Title: The Betrayal of Unborn Children in Northern Ireland Host: Kathy Sinnott with guests, Fr. Patrick McCafferty, Bernadette Smyth, Dr Trevor Hayes, Bishop John Keenan, Paul Kyle and Joyce Higgins In Northern Ireland the population continues to reject the culture of death - but the local government has been suspended for over 2 years. This has left the province in a vacuum which is being exploited in a move by the great majority of British MP’s in Westminster. This move has been made in cooperation of Sinn Fein, a self identified Irish republican party, who have collaborated with British MP’s to attempt to impose liberalised abortion and a “same sex marriage” regime on Northern Ireland. Such a blatant betrayal of Irish people by Irish republicans is unprecedented in Irish history. If the Northern Ireland government is not restored by 21st October, this imposition will become law. Kathy has a full report and takes a particular look at the spiritual side of this latest and most deadly attack on the unborn in Ireland. Guests include pro-life commentator Belfast priest Fr. Patrick McCafferty, Bernadette Smyth of Precious Life, Obstetrician Gynaecologist Dr. Trevor Hayes and Bishop John Keenan. Two Irish singer songwriters also share their songs on the subject, Paul Kyle and Joyce Higgins.

Two Irish farmers, Anthony and Rosemary, are deeply tied to the land. Because they grew up as neighbors, they also have deep ties to one another, but their personal connections are not all positive. Brian F. O’Byrne and Debra Messing are the two farmers in John Patrick Shanley’s play “Outside Mullingar.” Family events put the two on a collision course – and since this is a romantic comedy written by the author of the film “Moonstruck,” the outcome isn’t much in question. But is that resolution of romantic tension worth the journey? New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood tells us more about the play – and answers that question.
