Hive Digital Technologies Executive Chairman Frank Holmes joined Steve Darling from Proactive to share significant operational milestones for HIVE Digital Technologies, including surpassing 10 Exahash per second (EH/s) in global Bitcoin mining hashrate and achieving key benchmarks in its high-performance computing (HPC) expansion. Holmes reported that HIVE has added 1 EH/s of mining capacity per week over the last month, bringing its current total to over 10 EH/s. The company is now ahead of schedule in reaching its Phase 1 objective of 11.5 EH/s by the end of June 2025. With a fleet efficiency of 20 Joules per Terahash, HIVE is demonstrating both speed and sustainability in its mining operations. Importantly, Holmes emphasized that this rapid growth is fully funded, giving the company confidence as it continues to scale toward its long-term target of 25 EH/s by the fourth quarter of 2025. This expansion positions HIVE as a serious contender in the global Bitcoin mining sector. Beyond mining, HIVE's HPC subsidiary, Buzz HPC, is also exceeding expectations. The company announced that Buzz HPC has reached a $20 million annualized revenue run-rate from its GPU cloud services—a full month ahead of its original June 2025 target. This milestone reflects the growing demand for GPU-based infrastructure and the effectiveness of HIVE's strategy in building a complementary business beyond crypto. Buzz HPC now operates with a fleet of over 5,000 high-performance GPUs, enabling the company to serve clients in AI, machine learning, and cloud rendering. The success of Buzz HPC further validates HIVE's diversified growth model and positions it as a rising player in the cloud infrastructure and AI computing space. #proactiveinvestors #hivedigitaltechnologies # #tsxv #hive #nasdaq #hive #CryptoMining #GreenEnergy #BitcoinMining #ParaguayMining #DataCenter #Exahash #S21Miners #DigitalAssets #ProactiveInvestors

Hive Digital Technologies Executive Chairman Frank Holmes joined Steve Darling from Proactive to discuss the company's unaudited Bitcoin production results for February 2025. HIVE mined 89 BTC during the month, bringing its total Bitcoin holdings to 2,620 BTC, valued at approximately $220 million as of February 28, based on a BTC price of $84,000. Holmes highlighted that HIVE's Bitcoin holdings have grown by 23% year-over-year. However, on a month-over-month basis, BTC reserves declined as the company strategically sold a portion of its holdings to reinvest in capital assets, including acquiring Bitfarms' 200 MW hydro-powered Bitcoin mining facilities in Paraguay. Despite the asset reallocation, HIVE maintained a strong mining capacity, averaging 5.6 Exahash per Second (EH/s) with fleet efficiency at 20.9 Joules per Terahash. The company achieved a peak BTC-only hashrate of 6.2 EH/s and a peak BTC-equivalent hashrate of 6.4 EH/s, with an average daily production rate of 3.2 BTC—equivalent to 16 BTC per Exahash. Looking ahead, HIVE is targeting significant growth in 2025, with plans to quadruple its hashrate from 6 EH/s to 25 EH/s by September. The company's 300 MW expansion in Paraguay is a key part of this strategy, with phased energization of miners set for calendar Q2 2025. The first 100 MW will be deployed at Yguazú, followed by another 100 MW at Valenzuela, positioning HIVE for substantial scale-up in the competitive Bitcoin mining landscape. #proactiveinvestors #hivedigitaltechnologieslet #tsxv #hive #nasdaq #hive
Hive Digital Technologies Chief Financial Officer Darcy Daubaras joined Steve Darling from Proactive to share the company's unaudited production results for January 2025. HIVE mined 102 BTC, bringing its HODL portfolio to 2,657 BTC, valued at $271 million as of January 31, 2025, based on a Bitcoin price of approximately $102,000. The company's BTC holdings grew 34% year-over-year, though month-over-month holdings declined due to strategic BTC sales to fund capital investments, including the acquisition of Bitfarms' 200 MW hydro-powered Bitcoin mining assets in Paraguay. Daubaras highlighted that HIVE maintained an average mining capacity of 5.7 Exahash per Second (EH/s), with fleet efficiency at 22 Joules per Terahash (J/TH). The company achieved a peak BTC-only hashrate of 6 EH/s and a peak BTC-equivalent hashrate of 6.4 EH/s, producing an average of 3.3 BTC per day or 18 BTC per Exahash. A key development in January was HIVE's acquisition of a 200 MW hydro-powered mining facility in Paraguay from Bitfarms Ltd. The acquisition is expected to significantly boost HIVE's global Bitcoin mining hashrate to an anticipated 25 EH/s by September 2025, marking a 317% increase from the current 6 EH/s. HIVE estimates a total net cost of $400,000 per MW to complete the Bitfarms site, which, alongside existing operations in Canada and Sweden, will increase the company's total operational capacity to approximately 430 MW by Q3 2025. #proactiveinvestors #hivedigitaltechnologieslet #tsxv #hive #nasdaq #hive #BitcoinMining #CryptoExpansion #GreenEnergy #Paraguay #BTC #CryptoInvesting #BitcoinETFs #Blockchain #MiningTechnology
Hive Digital Technologies Executive Chairman Frank Holmes joined Steve Darling from Proactive to announce a major strategic milestone with the release of the company's unaudited December 2024 production results. During the month, HIVE successfully mined 103 Bitcoin, bringing its HODL portfolio to 2,805 BTC, reflecting an impressive 64.6% year-over-year increase and surpassing a key operational target. HIVE maintained an average mining capacity of 5.5 Exahash per Second (EH/s) during the month, with its fleet achieving an efficiency of 22 Joules per Terahash (J/TH). The company also reached a peak Bitcoin-only hashrate of 6.0 EH/s and a peak Bitcoin-equivalent hashrate of 6.3 EH/s, further solidifying its position as a leader in sustainable crypto mining. Holmes highlighted that as of December 31, 2024, HIVE's Bitcoin holdings were valued at over $261.9 million, based on Bitcoin's closing price of approximately $93,400. Looking ahead to 2025, HIVE is poised for significant growth. The company is targeting a global hashrate capacity of 15.0 EH/s by the end of 2025, with a blended fleet efficiency of 17.0 J/TH. A key driver of this expansion will be the deployment of its 100 MW hydroelectric-powered strategic facility in Paraguay, which emphasizes HIVE's commitment to sustainability and renewable energy. By the close of the second calendar quarter of 2025, HIVE aims to achieve 13.0 EH/s of global hashrate with the completion of the initial 100 MW phase in Paraguay. Subsequent site expansions are expected to help HIVE achieve its ambitious 15.0 EH/s target by year-end. This dual focus on scaling operations and enhancing efficiency positions HIVE as a key player in the Bitcoin mining industry, leveraging sustainable energy solutions to drive long-term growth and value creation. #proactiveinvestors #hivedigitaltechnologieslet #tsxv #hive #nasdaq #hive HiveDigitalTechnologies #Cryptocurrency #FrankHolmes #BitcoinMining #ParaguayExpansion #AIGrowth #FinancialMarkets #Blockchain #DigitalAssets #CryptoInvestments #ProactiveInvestors
Hive Digital Technologies Executive Chairman Frank Holmes joined Steve Darling from Proactive to announce the company's unaudited production results for November 2024, showcasing significant milestones. The company mined 103 Bitcoin during the month, increasing its HODL portfolio to 2,713 BTC—a 67% year-over-year growth. Holmes highlighted that Hive maintained an average mining capacity of 5.3 Exahash per Second (EH/s) with fleet efficiency of 22.3 Joules per Terahash, reaching a peak hashrate of 5.7 EH/s. This performance enabled an average daily production of 3.42 BTC, or 19.3 Bitcoin per Exahash. As of November 30, 2024, the company's Bitcoin holdings are valued at over $261 million, based on a BTC price of approximately $96,400. In a move to solidify its position as a leading Bitcoin miner, Hive announced the purchase of 11,500 next-generation Avalon ASIC miners from Canaan Inc. and 8.6 EH/s of Bitmain's S21+ Hydro machines. With these acquisitions, Hive is targeting a total Bitcoin mining capacity of 15 EH/s by summer 2025. Holmes emphasized that these achievements reflect Hive's commitment to scaling its operations and delivering exceptional results in the competitive cryptocurrency mining sector. #proactiveinvestors #hivedigitaltechnologieslet #tsxv #hive #nasdaq #hive #BitcoinMining #CryptoInvesting #GreenMining #BlockchainTechnology #FrankHolmes #DigitalAssets #CryptoGrowth #ParaguayMining #BitcoinReserves#invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews

Hive Digital Technologies Executive Chairman Frank Holmes joined Steve Darling from Proactive to reported unaudited production results for October 2024, showcasing solid performance and steady expansion in its Bitcoin mining operations. The company mined 117 BTC in October, a 1% increase from September, bringing Hive's total Bitcoin holdings to 2,624 BTC, up 51% year-over-year. Hive achieved an average mining capacity of 5.3 Exahashes per second (EH/s), reaching a peak hashrate of 5.6 EH/s with fleet efficiency at 22.3 Joules per Terahash (J/TH). This translated to an average daily production rate of 3.77 BTC, or 22.1 BTC per Exahash. In alignment with its expansion strategy, Hive Executive Chairman Frank Holmes announced the construction of a new 100 MW facility in Paraguay, near the capital, Asunción. The facility is part of Hive's goal to capture 2% of global Bitcoin mining capacity, using sustainable energy sources to support its growth. Additionally, Holmes expressed optimism about recent U.S. election outcomes, predicting favorable policies for the digital asset space under President Trump's administration and a Republican Congress. He also highlighted the influence of prominent figures like Elon Musk, whom Hive recognizes as an innovation leader, reinforcing Hive's positive outlook on the future of Bitcoin and digital transformation globally. #proactiveinvestors #hivedigitaltechnologieslet #tsxv #hive #nasdaq #hive #BitcoinMining #CryptoGrowth #GreenEnergy #BitcoinHODL #FrankHolmes #ProactiveInvestors #Blockchain #USPolitics #SustainableMining #invest #investing #investment #investor #stockmarket #stocks #stock #stockmarketnews

The Resale Edit: What Brands Should Consider When Building A Resale ProgramThe only place to start this week is the Charnard's decision to give 100% of Patagonia to a trust and holding company charged with manifesting Patagonia's mission: to save our home planet. There are few leaders that live their values with the willingness to discard and invent new structures for the times–Patagnoia's IronClad Guarantee, 1% for the planet, the Footprint Chronicles, Benefit Corporation, “Don't Buy This Jacket” and of course Worn Wear. Consistent with the past 50 years, Yvon and Patagonia are still willing to do so, with this recent move. Leadership can be elusive but we certainly know it when we see it. Thank you, Yvon, Milinda, Ryan, and the Patagonia team for continuing to lead.As NYFW wrapped up last week and climate week kicked off this week, Fortune points out the disagreeable truth that climate goals and big fashion business models simply do not align. Although brands and retailers are taking steps to be more sustainable, there is still a disconnect on how many goods a company can make to reach environmental goals. We are not going to address this within our current linear model. And it's one of the reasons so many fashion brands are launching resale programs. But with all these new programs how can one distinguish between business innovation and marketing? One way is to look at the business model behind the effort. Innovative business models are set up to be profit centers for the business, they address core activities such as buying and selling pre-owned items. Marketing programs have an ROI that drives traffic but are not set up to become core for the business. Saks Off 5th, who expanded their resale efforts this week with LXR and Reflaunt is aiming to make money by buying and selling pre-loved items. This is business model innovation given the ability to scale a profit center. Whereas UK fashion provider, Joules, who also announced a resale program is essentially awarding gift cards to get you back in the store, more akin to smart marketing. Marketing efforts can evolve into business innovation, but approaching resale as a business innovation certainly improves the odds of capturing the customer shift underway.Saks Off 5th initially partnered with LXR back in 2020 selling pre-owned handbags in-store. Their program has now expanded with Rent the Runway and Reflaunt to offer roughly 1,000 items online. Many of the resold items are not typically sold via the Off 5th banner including Hermes, Fendi, Prada, and Tom Ford. This makes sense for a discount retailer who can now buy back and resell higher-end pieces to their value-oriented customer base. This is a business that has the potential to continue to grow, not a marketing program. We will see more of these programs across value-oriented retailers such as Walmart, Target, JCP, and Macy's as they find new ways to attract and maintain value-oriented customers. As a not-so-small footnote, brands should beware these programs have significant brand risk in the new supply, discounting and merchandising of branded items outside the brand's purview. As compared to traditional wholesale relationships where brands share in revenue, these programs both buy from and sell to customers, bypassing the brands altogether.@James Reinhart wrote a fantastic article in Fast Company comparing fast fashion to big tobacco. James' points included the social pressures of the newest look and price point with cigarettes in the media and affordability at the time. It's possible there will be class action lawsuits or the government will regulate fast fashion but even if this does occur it won't be soon. For now, this article serves more as a billboard highlighting the need for new business models as fashion considers the sustainability implications of the industry.WWD covered lululemon's annual sustainability reporting which highlighted the challenges of our current commerce model from a CO2 perspective. Lulu shared an 82% absolute reduction, ahead of plan on direct emissions (scope 1 and 2) while indirect emissions (scope 3) increased 4%. Given lululemons growth, 4% would still be commendable by some and it also highlights the innovation needed from new business models such as lululemon's Like New. Other brands were in the news for sustainability press releases including Puma's new recycled shoe, others implementing ‘more sustainable' logistics and packing materials, and Macy's circularity program. While these make good marketing, many of these efforts, such as the process of producing a shoe from recycled content, is not addressing the systemic problem a growing fashion CO2 footprint–an exception may be Macy's move to digital samples which can scale and does address core operations. Saks Off 5th and lululemon's Like New program are examples of business innovation that can ultimately scale where business growth isn't directly tied to growing CO2 emissions. The So WhatFashion brands who are serious about climate goals will need to innovate profitable circular models. If your resale program doesn't make money buying and reselling pre-owned items, question if it's really just a marketing program and won't address your innovation agenda.Premium and luxury brands get ready for a very different retail landscape where more of your products are repurchased and resold in channels and stores you would disapprove of, bypassing you entirely. In order to control your brand, you will need ways to track and control your items beyond the first sale, owning the resale channel for your items.Week of September 23:Saks Off 5th on Resale: A Golden OpportunityWomen's Wear DailySaks Off 5th is ready to join resale. Throughout the last several months, Saks Off 5th has been partnering with companies like LXR & Co. and Rent The Runway to start building a network of pre-loved sources. Most recently, Saks Off Fifth launched with Reflaunt introducing menswear, men's accessories, footwear, and sunglasses into its roster of pre-loved merchandise. What is Driving Luxury Resale's Push into Physical Retail? The Fashion LawConsumer goods brands benefit from brick-and-mortar stores as physical retail drives higher spending, lower return rate, and acts as a better vehicle for new customer acquisitions. It's time for resale to get with the “old” way of shopping- in-store. The RealReal, Rebag, and Privè Porter plan to expand their physical store locations to achieve profitability and create the ultimate luxury experience for shoppers. Big fashion can't align its climate goals with its business modelFortuneAs the crossroads of NYFW and Climate Week meet, so does the disagreeable truth that climate goals and big fashion business models simply do not align. Although brands and retailers are taking steps to be more sustainable, there is still a disconnect on how many goods a company can make to reach environmental goals. Lululemon's Latest Impact Report Puts Pressure on Decarbonization Women's Wear Daily Lululemon has already captured the hearts of billions, $1.9 billion in quarterly revenues to be exact. The brand has made amazing strides towards becoming more sustinable, the brand still saw a 4% increase in Scope3 emissions from last year. Lululemon is now putting all of its efforts to focusing on transitioning to renewable, efficient energy. Macy's rolls out circular servicesEcotextile NewsFor the last 18 months, Macy's has started integrating new solutions to help conquer its sustainability improvement goals. It's efforts focus on offering ethically produced products and brands to its customer base, while simultaneously reducing its environment mental impact through logistics. As fast fashion continues to go unchallenged, the more and more it starting to sing the same tune as Big Tobacco, especially when targeting Gen Z. Fashion brands are launching partnerships with sustainable logistics providersGlossyIn effort to support authenticity around new initiatives, retailers like Rebecca Minkoff, EB Denim and Rent the Runway are taping more sustainable shipping and packaging solutions, like Route and Olive. In this podcast episode, MRS Bulletin's Sophia Chen interviews Bin Ouyang of Florida State University about making a better cathode for lithium ion batteries. The current use of cobalt and nickel in their cathodes causes Li-ion batteries to contract in volume and degrade. Ouyang and his colleagues simulated and then fabricated new cathode materials that do not use cobalt or nickel and also degrade less after being charged and discharged. To achieve this, they found that they needed to design a material with disorder in its crystal structure. They found that replacing cobalt and nickel with vanadium and niobium leads to a battery with a small change of volume. The results provide a model for the further search of viable cathode materials to design lithium-ion batteries that are entirely made of solids. This study is published in Joules (doi:10.1016/j.joule.2022.05.018).

The Barca Breakdown discussed another landmark transfer in the summer window. Joules Kounde has signed with FC Barcelona, a deal including €50 million transfer fee + €10 million in variables over 4 years. Despite Chelsea offering over €60 million, it was clear the Frenchman didn't want to go to the Premier League. Barca now have a reinforced defense that will help them make it further into the Champions League and stop the comebacks that Barca fell victim to. But it matters no longer, Barcelona have Gerard Pique, Joules Kounde, Eric Garcia, Ronald Araujo, Andres Christenesen, Sergio Roberto, Sergino Dest, and Jordi Alba. This will allow Xavi to rotate players much more effectively as well as mitigate the impact felt when a defender becomes injured. With so many options will Barca play a 4-3-3 or a 3-4-3? A 3-4-3 has seen much of Barca fall victim to assault from the wings, many times having players backtracking during a counter. It is likely that Xavi will stick with a 4-3-4 especially when trying out different lineups and their effectiveness. The last thing to consider is what will Xavi's preferred lineup be? Players to get the most time in as center backs will most likely be Kounde and Araujo, but there will be plenty of time for Christensen. We believe Eric Garcia will lose some minutes/starts and dest in certain situations may have to compete with Roberto or Araujo. Whatever Xavi leans towards, Barca definitely have some great potential and will be facing Juventus tomorrow in the USA.

Episode 98: Apretude and code blue. Apretude is a new injectable medication for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), Dr. Yomi presents how to use it. Then, Mandeep, Jon, and. Introduction: Apretude, a new injectable for HIV PrEP. By Timiiye Yomi, MD. Moderated by Jennifer Thoene, MD. What is HIV PrEP? Pre-exposure prophylaxis (or PrEP) consists of taking medication when a patient has a high risk of contracting HIV to lower their chances of getting infected. Who can take HIV PrEP? Individuals who may benefit from PrEP include but are not limited to: Male who have sex with male (MSM), people with multiple sexual partners with no consistent use of condoms, or people who have been diagnosed with an STD in the past 6 months, IV drug users who share needles, syringes, or other injection equipment. History of HIV PrEP: In 2012, the first medication for HIV PrEP was approved—Truvada® (tenofovir-emtricitabine). Truvada is a once-daily oral prescription drug. Seven years later, in 2019, the next medication for HIV PrEP was approved— Descovy® (tenofovir alafenamide and emtricitabine). It is also a daily PO medication. But today we want to introduce you to the newest medication for HIV PrEP—Apretude® (cabotegravir). On Dec 20, 2021, FDA approved Apretude (cabotegravir), an extended-release injectable for HIV-1 pre-exposure prophylaxis for at-risk adolescents and adults who weigh at least 35 kg (77 lbs). Mechanism of action: Apretude is a long-acting integrase inhibitor that works by binding to the HIV integrase active site and blocking the strand transfer step of retroviral DNA integration. How is it given? Comes as a 600-mg (3-mL) injection. Patients receive 2 initiation injections administered 1 month apart, thereafter every 2 months. Patients can start medication immediately or first take the oral formulation for 4 weeks to assess how well they tolerate the medication before beginning the injection. Trials: The safety and efficacy of Apretude in reducing the risk of contracting HIV-1 were evaluated in two randomized double-blind trials comparing Apretude and Truvada (once-daily oral medication).Trial 1: Participants who took Apretude had a 69% less risk of contracting HIV compared to Truvada.Trial 2: Participants who took Apretude had a 90% less risk of contracting HIV compared to Truvada. Common side effects: Fever, malaise, fatigue, sleep problems, myalgias and arthralgias, headache, rash, red and swollen eyes, edema of face, lips, mouth, tongue; GI discomfort, hepatotoxicity, and depression. Note: Some drug-resistant HIV variants have been identified in people with undiagnosed HIV prior to beginning Apretude. People who test positive for HIV while on Apretude must transition to a complete HIV treatment regimen as Apretude is not approved for HIV treatment. Requirements to receive Apretude: -Patient must be HIV-1 negative-Patient must remain negative to continue receiving Apretude-Patient must not miss any injections as this increases their risk of contracting the virus Apretude does not protect against other sexually transmitted infections. Patients must be sexually responsible and use other forms of protection such as condoms during sexual intercourse. Ross University School of Medicine. What is a code blue?Arreaza: Today we will present to you a case to remind you about some principles of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The term “code blue” in the United States refers to a situation where a patient is in cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, unresponsive, or experiencing another medical emergency that requires immediate attention. “Code blue” is commonly used in hospitals and clinics to call a rapid response team to arrive immediately to evaluate the patient. We hope you can benefit from this brief review and feel ready for your next code blue. Of course, you will need more than we provide during these few minutes, but we hope it triggers your curiosity to keep learning or practicing. By the way, “code blue” is not standard for medical emergency in the whole world. For example, in the United Kingdom, they call it “code red”. Case presentation: Mr. DD 56-year-old man with a past medical history of coronary artery disease, recent MI, DM2, and CHF presents today to our clinic for hospital follow. He had an MI 2 weeks ago. He reports that when he was at home working in the yard, he suddenly had 8/10 retrosternal chest pain, pressure-like, accompanied by shortness of breath and diaphoresis. The pain radiated to the left side of his neck/jaw and down his left shoulder and arm. Jon: Nitroglycerin was taken by Mr. DD 3 times without resolution of symptoms. The patient was taken by EMS to Kern Medical ER. In the hospital, there was a 4mm ST elevation on ECG on leads II, III, and aVF. Q waves were also seen in anterior leads V4-V6. Patient was taken to cath lab and stent was placed in the RCA. ECHO showed decreased left ventricle wall motion and dilated left ventricle with an ejection fraction of 28%. Mr. DD was discharged after 5 days in the hospital.M: He is currently on lisinopril, carvedilol, atorvastatin, aspirin, clopidogrel, metformin, and digoxin. He states he is not compliant with all the medications because he forgets to get refills at times. He has a 35-pack year history of smoking and drinks 3-4 4oz drinks every day after work. He states he has used methamphetamine and cocaine intermittently within the last 6 months.J: Today, he lets the MA know that he is having some chest pain at night, shortness of breath with minimal activity for the last week, and at times he feels his heart is beating too fast. He has a follow-up appointment with cardiology in 2 weeks. The MA tells you that the patient vitals today are BP:195/105, HR: 108, RR: 28, and O2% 89% on room air. M: You are reviewing the patient's chart when you hear a loud thud coming from the room, you rush into the room and find the patient on the ground. The patient is unresponsive and is not moving. What is your next action? A. Try to lift the patient off the ground and back onto the chair or bed B. Give the patient nitroglycerin sublingually C. Call and wait for the EMS before proceeding D. Obtain IV accessE. See if the patient is arousable and check pulse and breathing E is the correct answer to this question because before initiating any type of treatment, first, you must assess the patient for alert response and their basic vitals such as their pulse and breathing.J: We do this because we need to know if the cardiopulmonary systems are intact. When they are not intact, regardless of the level of medical training, we must start CPR protocol. M: This patient most likely suffered a tachyarrhythmia, a very common post-MI-complication that causes the highest mortality rates. The most common cause of death are ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia. J: These are the steps we must take in order to start resuscitation of the cardiopulmonary system in any environment before the patient can be taken to a higher level of care. In this situation, Doctor Holter and Doctor Singh will perform 2-patient CPR. This is only an introduction of basic life support and advanced cardiac life support. You will need additional training to get the BLS and ACLS certificates. M: First, assure your environment is safe before preceding to render care. You want to be able to give the best uninterrupted care to your patient without becoming a patient yourself. Jon: Doctor Holter. Mandeep: Doctor Singh.J - Doctor Holter: I will reach down and check the patient. “Sir, Sir, are you okay” – I am assessing for reactions from visual or verbal cues given by me. When the patient is unresponsive to verbal and visual cues, I will give a painful stimulus to the patient such as a nail bed pinch or sternal rub. Next, it is necessary to assess the pulse and breathing of the patient. Narrator: The reason we check if the patient is alert is to assess the neurologic activity. The lack of response to painful stimuli indicates there is no self-protect response. To assess the carotid pulse, you must palpate the carotid artery by placing the index and middle fingers near the upper neck between the sternomastoid and trachea roughly at the level of the cricoid cartilage. Assess breathing by checking the rise and fall of the chest. Lack of responsiveness, pulse, and breathing indicates that immediate Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) needs to be initiated. J - Doctor Holter: Please call 911 and get an AED.M - Doctor Singh: I will call 911 and get an AED.J- Doctor Holter: I will place the person on their back and start single-person CPR until Doctor Singh comes back. Narrator: CPR is performed by placing the patient flat on their back on an even surface. Place the heel of your hand on the center of the person's chest (on the mid sternum) then place the palm of your other hand on top. Press down 5-6 cm (2-2.5 inches) at a rate of 100-120 beats per minute. Compressions should not be interrupted because they serve as an artificial way of contracting the heart and circulating the blood to maintain blood perfusion. For 1 or 2 person CPR on an adult: Give 5 cycles of 30 compressions to 2 breaths. For 1 person CPR on a child: Give 5 cycles of 30 compressions to 2 breaths. For 2 person CPR on a child: Give 5 cycles of 15 compressions to 2 breaths.M - Doctor Singh : Doctor Holter, continue the compressions and I will give rescue breaths and start to place the AED pads on the patient. Let me know if you are tired and we can switch to give high-quality CPR with adequate depth and rate. Narrator: The AED comes with a diagram made on the pads to instruct where to place the pads. Once an AED is positioned correctly on the patient's chest, let it detect if a shockable rhythm is present. Shockable rhythms include ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia. If there is not a shockable rhythm detected, then continue with CPR until a higher level of care is reached. If a shockable rhythm is detected, the AED will advise the users to step back and verbalize “clear” in order to ensure that everyone is clear of the patient. It will then administer a shock to the patient in the range of 120-200 Joules, based on the device manufacturer's recommendation.M - Doctor Singh: Doctor Holter, stay clear of the patient. The AED advises shocking the patient. I will press the button to administer the shock now.Narrator: After administration of the first shock, ACLS guidelines recommend continuing CPR for 2 minutes without checking for a pulse, as effective cardiac contractility lags behind the restoration of an organized electrical rhythm. After the next 2-minute cycle of CPR, the AED will reanalyze the patient's rhythm to determine if the rhythm is once again shockable. J - Doctor Holter: Doctor Singh , continue high-quality CPR while I initiate ACLS protocol. I will get an IV and start epinephrine. M- Doctor Singh: I will continue CPR in the meantime. Narrator: ACLS starts with again CPR, AED rhythm reading, and shock administration but with a higher level of care (ACLS). You must obtain IV or IO access. Epinephrine is administered every 3-5 minutes during the cycle in doses of 1 mg at a time. After each dose of epinephrine and CPR for 2 minutes the AED should reassess if the rhythm is shockable, and then continue CPR for another 2 minutes. At this time, it is recommended to use amiodarone or lidocaine. CPR will continue but at this time patient will likely be in the ambulance on the way to the hospital, and EMS will be managing the cycles. The cycles will continue until return of spontaneous circulation is obtained.J: Myocardial infarction is the most common cause of shock-refractory ventricular fibrillation, along with coronary artery disease. If CPR does not resume spontaneous circulation within 40-50 minutes, there is a decreased chance of recovery. Spontaneous circulation may be achieved in patients with refractory Vfib with coronary revascularization. Therefore, in addition to traditional CPR, venoarterial ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) can be used as an adjunct and can result in much better systemic perfusion. Essentially, this is a technique in which blood is drained from the body and circulated outside through an oxygen and heat exchanger and is then reintroduced into the body. This technique can be used if preparing for coronary revascularization. M: Vfib is a great risk in the acute phase after MI, up to 72 hours after revascularization, due to the recent ischemia and reperfusion. After the first 72 hours and up to a month following, Vfib remains a risk due to the continued remodeling of the heart. This newly remodeled tissue can cause interruptions in the normal electrical signaling of the heart leading to dissociated contractions and subsequent lack of perfusion through the body, which can quickly lead to death within minutes if not recognized and managed immediately with CPR and defibrillation as described.J: Clinicians should be aware of their patients who would be more susceptible to serious events such as this and be on top of their training about management. This may not be a common occurrence in clinics, but it is a very serious event and requires a prompt and appropriate response. Conclusion: Now we conclude our episode number 98 “Apretude and code blue.” Dr. Yomi concisely explained how to use the new injectable medication for HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP). Then, Manpreet, Jon, and Sheinnera presented a case that can actually happen in clinic and anywhere. CPR is a life-saving skill that needs to be learned and practiced over and over so we are not taken by surprise. Remember that heart disease continues to be the number 1 killer in the United States. So, make sure you know where your AED is and be ready to use it when needed. Even without trying, every night you go to bed being a little wiser. This week we thank Hector Arreaza, Timiiye Yomi, Jennifer Thoene, Manpreet Singh, Jon-Ade Holter, and Sheinnera Gerongay. Thanks for listening to Rio Bravo qWeek Podcast. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: P(utopia) is more important than P(doom) and this could have important strategic implications, published by Joshua Clymer on May 2, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Edit: I'm assuming total utilitarian values and the basic ideas behind longtermism without providing any justification for them. If you do not have these values or disagree with longtermism, these arguments probably won't apply to you. I am concerned that the longtermist community is too down-side focused and this could result in people not thinking enough about increasing the probability of utilitarian utopia. Claim 1: the probability that superintelligent AGI has utilitarian values dominates EV calculations. There are roughly three ways I can see superintelligence going down: The superintelligence is misaligned and we all die. The superintelligence is aligned to non-utilitarian values (probably normal human values). Perhaps humans end up colonizing other solar systems. Or maybe they all decide to enter some kind of simulation – but they don't use every joule and kilogram available to produce utility. The superintelligence is aligned to utilitarian values – i.e. every Joule in every reachable galaxy is used to produce happy, meaningful lives. Imagine Dyson spheres surrounding every star to support countless brains in vats or simulated minds. Evaluating outcome 1: I'll ignore the moral relevance of the superintelligence itself since it is present in all three outcomes. If the superintelligence is unaligned, I don't see any reason to expect it to do anything particularly utilitarian (or anti-utilitarian), so I will value this outcome at 0. Evaluating outcome 2: I'll be generous and say that humans will populate all reachable galaxies and there will be 10 billion happy humans per star. Evaluating outcome 3: I'll be pessimistic and assume that the hard problem of consciousness can't be solved and the superintelligence must construct biological brains to ensure that real experiences are being produced. A brain consumes 20 joules per second and a star produces something like 10^26 joules per second, so a single star can support 10^25 brains. 10^25 brains would require a lot of matter, but energy can be converted into matter. There are 10^16 Joules in a kg and a brain weighs ~ 1 kg which means it would take 10^9 seconds = 32 years for a star to produce enough matter to support its full brain capacity, which is no time at all in the scheme of things. So, outcome three produces something like 10^25 happy humans per star (or many more). So, the expected utility of the universe should look something like: Utopia is where almost all of the value is. Claim 2: It is not obvious that reducing the probability of extinction is the best way to increase the probability of utopia. According to the previous section, almost all of the value in reducing x-risk comes from indirectly increasing the probability of utopia. Imagine a scale that represents the probabilities of the three outcomes with two handles: the doom handle, and the utopia handle: When you pull either handle, the rest of the chart scales proportionally. Some interventions that mostly just pull the doom handle: The majority of AI alignment research agendas: interpretability, inner-alignment, learning from human feedback, etc. Increasing awareness about the alignment problem. Some interventions that pull the utopia handle: Directing EA community-building efforts at people who could have influence over AGI. Most longtermist governance research. Investing in capabilities at companies where there is more EA influence (e.g. anthropic) Trying to get EAs into positions of influence in AI companies or the government. Comparing scale Note that the value of pulling the doom handle depends a lot on the ratio between the blue and yellow areas. x = p(normal values)/p(ut...
Hello Ungovernable Misfits I hope are ready for something electrifying… like …electricity. There are a plenty of heady concepts and analogies to convey the process of mining and proof of work, like the transmutation of energy, storing energy in time, or how Bitcoin is money as stored energy, I'll leave those metaphors to the thinkbois. Here, we'll cover some basic concepts and terminology related to electricity to gain a better understanding of the process of mining. Because with out electricity, we're left to hashing with pencil and paper. In this iteration of Bitesize Bitcoin, we'll define Voltage, Current, and Power and how we can solve for them using Joule's Law. We will define Work… Watts, and Joules …and the first Law of Thermodynamics. Our guest today @JonPDiGiacomo is here with his daughters to explain in plain language. Jon has been on the show previously and become a good friend. Listen out for more episodes to come. Bitesize Bitcoin is a new show with short sharp audio clips to help listeners learn about the more technical aspects of bitcoin. It still is. I don't want to give an overly simplified take on the history of particle physics - but it's fair to say that physicists will study high energy particles WHEREVER they can find them. And it just so happens that a large number of really high energy particles are constantly bombarding us from space. In our prior series on the ALPHA PARTICLE, we learned about the solar wind and how the Earth's magnetic field catches much of that ionizing radiation, which we occasionally see displayed as the Aurora.Well. That magnetic field is no match for these cosmic rays, which come flying at us from deeper in space with much higher velocities than anything in the solar wind. These particles smash right though the magnetosphere and into the molecules of the upper atmosphere. From our perspective on Earth, these cosmic rays appear as showers of debris left over from those high altitude collisions. But they're happening all the time. There's so much debris out there that hundreds of particles - particles of that debris - have passed through you since you first hit play on this episode.### Cosmic RaysOn the 15th of October, 1991, a particle with enormous energy entered our upper atmosphere.A particle with this much energy had never been seen before on Earth. At least by humans. It had tens of millions of times more energy than anything produced at the Large Hadron Collider or FermiLab. All told. It had the kinetic energy of a baseball moving at around 60 miles per hour. All Packed. Into. A single. Particle. And it was heading right for us.The first thing it found upon arrival at Earth was the magnetic field. Traveling at such a high speed, it barely noticed the deflecting force and smashed through through into the atmosphere.Even in the rarified air of our upper atmosphere, tens of kilometers above the Earth's surface, there are plenty of molecules to go around. Way more than you'd find in outer space. And what do particles from space with a lot of energy do when suddenly surrounded by a bunch of molecules? They spend it.That poor first molecule it encountered didn't stand a chance. Whether it simply lost an electron or got completely blown apart is hard to say, but that incident cosmic ray quickly broke apart into a shower of particles high above the Earth. Pions were certainly created, but with that much energy - 50ish Joules of energy - all kinds of particles - from Lambda Zero to Kaons to the Cascades and Sigma baryons - could have been present. And all of them decayed as they usually do.The resulting shower of decays grew wider and wider, until the final, resultant charged pions decayed into muons. And the neutral pions decayed into photons. And any high energy photons decayed into electron-positron pairs who would in turn radiate the rest of the energy away. That final blast of radiation filled a circle kilometers wide that slammed into the US Army's Dugway Proving ground in Utah desert and - as luck would have it - right into the detectors of a physics experiment. The detectors measured resultant spray and were able to back-calculate the energy of the original, impinging particle from space. This aptly-named Oh-my-god particle was far and away the highest energy particle ever detected. To date, it's not entirely clear what could accelerate a particle to such outrageous speeds. And the current candidates are, frankly, terrifying.## The Power LawIn some respects, cosmic rays are kind of like earthquakes. There's a lot more little ones than there are big ones. For earthquakes, big ones with lots of shaking - magnitude 7 or 8 - are, mercifully, fairly uncommon around the world. Small ones, like magnitude 1's or 2's happen almost every day.Cosmic rays follow a similar law.Cosmic rays with an energies around 1000 MeV arrive almost continuously, from every direction, where as cosmic rays with energies a million times that might strike near you a few times per year. Those ultra high energy cosmic rays, a bit like the oh my god particle, whose energies can be measured macroscopic units like Joules? They might strike your whole TOWN maybe once a year, if that.As scientists would say, the frequency depends inversely on energy.More precisely, the frequency is derived from a POWER LAW. A power law for cosmic rays implies that the relative likelihood of two events, with energy E1 and E2 is proportional to their ratio, raised to some exponent. Power laws are simple enough to understand, but difficult to explain. Bigger cosmic rays are less common, sure. But what's difficult to explain about a power laws is that little number. The scaling exponent. Where does it come from? It's a collective effect. All the things inside and outside our galaxy that throw cosmic rays at us contribute to that effect. Other stars and planets sometimes get in the way and capture some of them. Cosmic rays in interstellar space sometimes decay or interact en route, turning into other particles with somewhat lower energy, muddying things a bit. Magnetic fields in space - like the one surrounding our Earth - deflect cosmic rays ever so slightly. It's a bit like studying Earthquakes. There are just so many moving parts and we don't know all the details.## The AnkleDespite all this complexity, the shape of the cosmic ray power law can tell us a LOT about the nature of cosmic rays. For example. At the highest end, for those particles coming in with the HIGHEST energies, the power law for cosmic rays actually changes a bit. It flattens out. It becomes slightly less sensitive to Energy. Ultra high energy Cosmic Rays aficionados call this change the “ankle”.The ankle represents a cut in the cosmic ray spectrum at about half a joule of kinetic energy. There's a pretty good plot physicists who study these things have made. I'll include links to a picture in the show notes. It's a small effect on a small fraction of the total number cosmic rays we see on Earth. But to astrophysicists who study these things, it says a lot.Namely, this “kink” or “ankle” in the power law suggests a possible change in where those cosmic rays are coming form. The leading explanation is that those ultra high energy cosmic rays - those cosmic rays with kinetic energy greater than half a Joule or so - are coming from OUTSIDE our galaxy.Which is just as well. Because it's hard to imagine anything inside our own galaxy capable of accelerating individual, microscopic particles up to macroscopic energies. The possibilities are just… too frightening.Next time, we'll explore what kinds of objects in space serve as particle accelerators millions of times more powerful than anything humans ever built on Earth.
