We've all done it: judged others, compared our body to someone else's body, and beat ourselves up for the way we look.In this episode we invite two sisters, Emma and Carla, to the convo - and they've been through it all: diets, plastic surgery, and more. Together we chat openly about the struggles all of us have gone through with self-acceptance.Points Discussed in this Episode Why are we trapped in this cycle of believing there's actually an “ideal” body type? How awareness plays such a huge role in self-acceptance The trickle down effect; change one thing, and you change everything Comparing yourself to others and judgment Do women have to deal with body complex issues way more than men? Fitness and diet culture is centered around changing your appearance and restricting yourself. But what if it doesn't have to be that way? Their MerryBody Method for exercise combines physical movement with the mindset work of self-belief, body confidence, and self-acceptance. Join host Whitney Lauritsen as she chats with the pair about their health and fitness journey, where they discuss body image, unhealthy dieting, and body comparison. Under the influence of toxic diet culture, it's hard, even impossible to have any measure of self-acceptance. The meaning of life becomes how much we weigh, not about using the powerful voices we have for anything other than derogatory statements towards ourselves. The MerryMaker Sisters experienced the pain that comes with subscribing to a harmful model of fitness, and they created a program to combat it. Why do we have to stop using dieting as a way to demean ourselves? How do we take care of our bodies from a loving place? In this episode, Carla and Emma Papas share how they built their membership on self-acceptance and joy. Three Things You'll Learn In This Episode The story of MerryBody How do we apply a test-test-test approach to building our programs and infuse it with real feedback from the people we want to help? How to use exercise to celebrate your body, not punish it Why is diet culture so destructive to our self-acceptance, belief and ability to tap into our magic? The power of mindset and meditation How do we turn our minds into our greatest cheerleader instead of our most unkind critic? Guest Bio Emma and Carla Papas are the Founders of The Merrymaker Sisters and Merrybody Studio. They started The Merrymaker Sisters as a hobby in 2013, and it began as a blog to simply share their favorite healthy recipes, thoughts on mindset, dieting, fitness and life in general. Through their journey with Yoga, Pilates and Meditation Emma and Carla realized the only thing that truly matters is how we feel about ourselves right NOW, not when we lose a specific number of kgs or fit into that dress. Yoga, Pilates and Meditation was the key to realizing that right here, right now…you are absolutely, 100% enough. Their goal is simple: they want you to come on over to their site, read, watch, move with them, cook with them and feel more self-acceptance, self-respect and more joy. This is a very important fitness topic for anyone who struggles with feeling like you always need to do more, or you're comparing yourself to others, or always looking for something to fix yourself. About Our Guests Emma and Carla Papas are known as The Merrymaker Sisters. Their work involves finding love, integrity, and compassion during the journey to health and well-being. After quitting their desk jobs, Emma and Carla went on a journey of self-discovery to find magic and follow the bliss. They’re the founders of MerryBody Online Studio, which provides unlimited access to yoga, pilates, and meditation classes. Their website also gives free healthy recipes that nourish your body. The Merrymaker Way of Life The Sisters’ Journey To Self-Care Emma and Carla talk about their self-loathing, self-hate, and unhealthy relationship with food. Making the decision to follow their bliss. They took a break and got training for yoga and pilates. They started their MerryBody studio and changed their mindset to feeling good and letting go. Acknowledging The Negative Feelings You have the right to feel the way you feel. Remember that you are not alone in this. Moving physically allows Emma and Carla to move through their emotions. Movement allows them to let go of the responsibility of carrying the world on their shoulders. Moving Through This Bad Time The easiest thing to do is to constantly come back to the breath and breathe deeper. Falling into the anxiety and stress will allow you to find your anchor. Utilize the power of mediation. Dancing like a crazy person and going wild will help you from being stuck in your head. Breathing Exercises For Listeners The first step is a kind of grounding or sinking into your bodies for one minute. The grounding exercise involves using three breathing techniques. There’s usually resistance when starting out, so it’s best to pick one breathing technique and focus on that. It’s important to check in with yourself and always come back to your practice. You can get so caught up in the news nowadays that you can forget to do what makes you feel okay. The experience of deep breathing fires neural signals up in your brain and triggers calmness. The disruption to your daily routines makes you more vulnerable to stress. Breathing exercises can help you reclaim some sense of power. The language in your head can be a pathway to doing self-care first aid to yourself. Doing Self-Care Remember to always fill your cup, so you can give better to the people around. Practice yoga or pilates at home and eat nourishing food to take care of yourself. Avoid dehydration by having a big bottle of water at your desk. Create a sense of safety by staying connected with family and friends through voice messages or video calls. Get creative and do the things you’ve always wanted to do but never had the time. Create bumpers around the information you digest to avoid exhaustion. The Beginning Of A New Opportunity There is an opportunity to create something good for the community and practice altruism. Emma and Carla opened up MerryBody for free to get everyone moving while at home. Why listening to this episode is a must We cover: the formula for alignment is and how to apply it in your life how to recover from decisions you made that you totally regret making the exact strategy for how to KNOW what decisions are aligned with your values why questioning commonly accepted beliefs about the "right" and "wrong" of life is a must all in all - what creates a fulfilling life (and business) why "any press is good press" is wrong. a toolkit for checking in with small decisions that create a big impact and ripple effect how to just be you The Merrymaker sisters are a life force of love and abundance. They're living examples of those who have learned to trust their intuition and practically make decisions around money, business, 'fame', and life in general, and can appreciate both the difficulty of this at times, but most of all the importance of it. With a reach of hundreds of thousands of followers a month with their Merry Recipes, Blog, Masterminds, Podcasts, and Challenges - these girls have a breadth and depth of skill and experience in how to run a business and live a life from the heart and be incredibly successful at it.
Watch the video of this podcast here. Emma and Carla are so much fun that we highly recommend you listen or watch the podcast to get the most out of this episode! Their enthusiasm is infectious, and Gin had to make an extra special effort to stay on-topic and not get carried away. The girls begin by telling us about their journey to becoming successful businesswomen. It started in 2012 when they changed their lifestyle habits and Carla began posting on her personal Instagram account about it. There was huge interest in their content, so they began blogging about their story. They loved what they were doing, so started attending blogging conferences and learning everything they could about making it a full-time gig. The sisters eventually quit their government jobs and started making eBooks, courses, and even an app. Instagram They started their Instagram domination by sharing photos and hashtags, but are the first to admit that these days, so much content gets lost in the online noise that a more in-depth strategy is needed to grow. Carla explains that Instagram is a useful platform for connecting with people with similar interests. The sisters use Instagram to: Raise awareness Entertain Inspire Educate But be warned, it’s not a quick route to success. People may be followers for six months or more before even clicking through to your site. Their recommendation for WordPress consultants is to use social media differently. If your content is a little dry, “Give them the option to fall in love with the whole story.” Be authentic and it will resonate with your followers. They also use Facebook a lot, which has now taken over from Instagram for the number of click-throughs to their website. Emma explains that MeetEdgar has been a game changer for them in terms of ease of promoting evergreen content like their most loved recipes. “This has tripled our traffic from Facebook to the blog.” The girls usually publish around four Facebook posts a day and four Instagram posts a day, but are quick to add that there is no magic number and that the main thing is to be consistent with whatever you are posting. Final words to the wise: It takes time and needs momentum. Like blogging, seeing results from social media requires a long-term strategy. FaceBook Ads The Merrymaker Sisters use Facebook ads in two ways... When they launch a product, they use the old ‘pixel on sales page’ strategy for re-targeting. They use it as part of their Opt-In funnel. For example, they offer a free 7-day meal plan that then goes to a trip-wire product. If the person doesn’t buy the trip-wire, they are then targeted for something else. Gin asked the girls how they pinpoint exactly what their audience likes. As well as using surveys, they also ask questions directly on Facebook, finding that people love to feel as though they are contributing. Build Trust Through Connection “We build trust by personally responding to all emails and posts on Facebook. People then get to know us. It feels so good to connect one on one and help someone. It’s why we’re here in the first place - to help people. Sometimes you can forget this because you’re stuck in the numbers and the measurements, but it’s the reason why we do what we do!” Blogging When the business first started, the girls were blogging every day because they loved it so much. They’ve experimented over the years and now post about three times a week. The key is knowing what your target audience are searching for online, and then tailoring that to an article that gives away engaging, good quality information for free. For the girls, that content topic is easy - free recipes! From there, they focus on optimising the page and getting people into funnels. “Every Business should be prioritising blogging” Merrymaker Sisters on the WPE Podcast “Whenever anyone asks me what I can do to market their brand, I always tell them by blogging,” says Carla. And here’s why… You can do it for free You are letting people into the business and they are getting to know you and the business You’re helping people and building trust which means they are more likely to come back and then eventually buy something. The girls give a fantastic example of Bronnie Ware, who wrote a blog post about what she knew and felt strongly. Her post, “Regrets of the Dying” resonated with so many people that she went on to write a best-selling book based on the article. The link is below - you HAVE to check it out; it's a great example of how writing about something that resonates with you might just strike a chord with more people than you think. Merry Tip: - Remember that it’s about consistency and quality over volume. Write about something that you want to write about; something that resonates with you; something that is authentic and real to you or your business. Living a Stress-Free and Fun Life Continuing from Mental Health Month, Gin knew the Merrymaker sisters were the perfect entrepreneurs to ask for tips on how we can prioritize mental health. Carla’s advice was to always come back to the present moment. Emma explained that it’s impossible to live a totally stress-free life and that you need to find the thing that helps you get rid of that stress and do it! Do what makes you feel happy, calm or gives you joy every day.
In 2012, The Merrymaker Sisters - also known as Emma and Carla Papas - discovered a different way of living... They were fed up with counting calories and sick of the guilt they felt after eating, with low self-esteem and super confused by all the information that was being thrown at them. They were in this obsessive whirlwind of fad diets, quick fixes and negative body image. 'Health' used to mean: losing weight, eating less and more exercise. And then they found another way, a better way, a much more fun and delish-filled way to live, and wanted to share it with everyone. Their philosophy is less stress is best, in every possible way. ESPECIALLY when it comes to food. They believe that people have better things to do than feel guilty about past meals and anxious about what you're going to eat next. Life doesn't have to be controlled around the food you eat. When you live a Merrymaker Lifestyle, you eat real food. And real food rocks. They don't care if you're paleo, vegan, vegetarian, LCHF, raw, etc. The Merrymaker Lifestyle is about adding more GOOD to your life (and your plate!). It’s a real thing… FEAR of being online – False Evidence (of) Appearing Real or a gut feeling pointing you in the right direction, but what about thinking “what’s the BEST that would happen, getting your business online?” ? You don’t need to put yourself online, if you feel comfortable sharing your personal your journey great, but it’s really about showcasing your salon. One of the objections I hear often, which stops salon owners getting more social-media-active or building an online profile for themselves is the ever-present fear of putting yourself out there – publicly. Earlier this year I met Emma and Carla, aka The Merrymaker Sisters, two awesomely fun sisters who have built a strong & loyal Instagram following of over 60 thousand for their health and lifestyle business! I’m always inspired by and learn a lot from those outside the salon industry, and these girls are more than inspiring because they not only take action but they have energy to-boot! Not to mention there is a lot to be learnt from their Instagram tips and their attitude to building engaged communities online, and translating them into loyal customers on or off line.

This episode is brought to you by Sitelock If I could bottle up the energy of the Merrymaker Sisters I would do it in a heartbeat. I first discovered Emma & Carla Papas (aka, The Merrymaker Sisters), through Dan Norris. I had a feeling based on their name that they were going to be a blast to talk to (which they were) and I loved what they were doing. I loved their story of getting out of dieting and how it changed their lives. They made a conscious choice to get off the merry-go-round and eat whole foods, stop pushing themselves at the gym and start enjoying their lives more. Novel idea, right? Their story into finding what was right for them (from a health perspective) really helped them shape their business in the process. Their story truly represents the saying "ignorance is bliss". They simply kept going with what was working and continued to share it. Their business continues to grow (cookbooks... a new book coming out in October! and a private membership). Emma & Carla are a huge inspiration and I know you're going to love the interview. Questions I Asked Carla & Emma Before we get into your business today, can you share what you guys were both doing before launching The Merrymaker Sisters? I'd love to hear more about your story of getting fed up counting calories & fad diets (amen!)... where did you go to start changing things? When did you decide to take your business online? Explain what your business is all about? Your blog & content seems to be a mix of lifestyle, health and business (which I love). How has that worked with your audience? You also launched a podcast... how's that going? What are some of the ways people can work with you? What's on the horizon for The MerryMaker Sisters? What You're Going to Learn How they went from government jobs to their dream business How they came up with the brand (the name took 5 minutes) but the brand took time to grow. What Merrymaker actually means How they've allowed their interests to evolve and shift their business in the process Why they let their audience change and grow with them What allowed them to stop dieting (stepping into Paleo), feel great and start shifting into a whole food diet How they found a new way of living... and how it created a business Where to connect with The Merrymaker Sisters Website | Twitter | Instagram | Facebook
"You'll see it when you believe it." - Wayne Dyer This week we jumped into the podcast studio to chat all things self-publishing! As you probably know, we launched pre-orders for our SECOND hard copy cookbook this week. Both books we've gone down the self-publishing road. And it's a pretty cool road. It was a totally unknown road for us 1 year ago when we decided to create our first book. We learnt OH. SO. MUCH and it has been totally amazing being able to actually implement the things we learnt last time round... this time round! Look at some of the deliciousness inside our new book! If you've been thinking about writing a book... then episode 55 is for you! We cover all the lessons (aka blessings in disguises), why creating physical products is good for your business (even if your audience knows you from the online world), the exact steps to create a book and get it to launch stage as well as our launch strategy (yes, it involves an epic giveaway!). Oh! We also get into the mindset and blocks that might pop up when creating products and exactly how to deal with these struggles (the Wayne Dyer quote above gives you a clue!). Nothing will be able to stop you once you get our mindset flip tips! There's going to be plenty more to share on this journey once we have the final product in October later this year, so count this as part 1! We really are SO excited about this book, if you haven't had a chance to check out the epic launch giveaway you can enter! You just have to pre-order our epic book! Alright! Put aside 52 moments this week to listen to our episode all about publishing books! Yay! Always merrymaking, Emma + Carla See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Thrilled to be joined today by Emma and Carla Pappas, of The Merrymaker Sisters. These two are super energetic, fun and refreshing and I know that hearing their story will absolutely inspire others to take action, make changes in their lives and do the things they're passionate about. When The Merrymaker Sisters created their online business, I learned that they never really thought about the perfect avatar that they were trying to attract. (Something we're often told to do as business owners). Instead, they just created the brand and business that they knew people would find value in, and learned and made changes along the way. Their inspiring and health conscious brand, attracts mostly women of all ages, and these women have realized that there's a different way of living that fits each individual. Emma and Carla have honed in on how to help each woman discover exactly what is right for them. Born DOERS, Emma and Carla know that the best way to make changes in your life is just to take action. Their best advice for new entrepreneurs: Get started now and put yourself out there. Just do the best you can do right now and make tweaks and improvement as you go. Equally important is to not get so tied up in what other people are posting – compare and despair gets you nowhere. Everyone's content (from Marie Forleo to Gary Vaynerchuck) had room for improvement when they were first starting out. “Compare to yourself, don't compare to others because that's paralyzing.” You may just end up hating what you're doing and sucking all the joy out of it. An integral lesson they learned along the way is the idea that “what you focus on grows.” At the time they worked horrible jobs with toxic people and constant negative thoughts swirling in their heads. Realizing that spending 8 hours per day in this situation was getting them nowhere, this gave them the courage to leave their jobs as soon as possible to devote more time to their brand. Making the business their priority, spending extra time on it and jumping into action led to incredible growth and success. Momentum is everything. It's obvious from this interview that Emma and Carla are full of energy and are super positive people. But, like all of us there can be times when they fall back into a negative space in moments of sadness, sensitivity or being overwhelmed. “It's okay that we do fall back, it's just how fast we come back to where want to be in our mindset that matters.” Yoga, meditation, walks outside or expressing gratitude are some of the ways that the sisters get out of this type of funk. The girls are big fans of practicing gratitude and say, “It's such a simple thing, but it's magical.” To grow their business from a simple idea to a strong brand, Emma and Carla have had to do many scary things; quitting their jobs, putting themselves out there, public speaking and writing their first cook book just to name a few. They know first-hand that as you do more, things become more normal to you and you don't realize how big and bold you're actually being. Speaking of putting yourself out there, One of the things I ask Emma about is her public relationship with fellow entrepreneur, Dan Norris. She shared that deciding to this was all part of putting forth her real, authentic self on social media. Some people put up a front and pretend to be somebody else on social media, but that's pretty hard to keep up. “Being you is so easy and way more fun.” Emma and Carla were so much fun to talk to and I'm thrilled that they've shared their brand and incredible relationship with the Bold Life Movement audience. SOME QUESTIONS I ASK: What did the evolution of their brand look like? How do the sisters bounce back when they're not feeling exceptionally positive or energetic? How do they decide what to share on social media? Is there such a thing as being too authentic? What were some of the big takeaways they've gotten from the guests on their podcast, MerryBiz? IN THIS EPISODE, YOU WILL LEARN: Why taking action trumps all. How the name of your brand might not be as important as some claim it is. How our thoughts attract and decide what we're going to do in the future. How training your brain through meditation and yoga can get you back to a positive mindset more quickly. Welcome back to another edition of Youpreneur FM! This is our special monthly chat with a member of the Youpreneur community, and today's episode is made extra special because you get to hear two members for the price of one: Carla and Emma Merrymaker! When they catapulted their business from a hobby to six-figures a year one of the primary reasons was joining the Youpreneur community: they surrounded themselves with people on the same path and took action to create incredible results. On today's episode of Youpreneur FM, I chat with them about what it's been like to go from a hobby to a personal brand impacting thousands of fans, where they were before attending back-to-back Tropical Think Tanks and joining the Youpreneur community, what has happened since then, and where they are headed in the future. They're a true delight to have in the community and I'm so happy to highlight them on today's show. Sit back and enjoy episode 166 of Youpreneur FM. Essential Learning Points From This Episode:Why Tropical Think Tank was so powerful for them. What helped them make the leap from hobby bloggers to real business owners? How that leap resulted in a six-figure a year business. What was a really big "ah ha" moment for them? Who is publishing their next book and what is the goal for the book? Much, much more! In episode 19 on #MerryBiz we take you through the exact steps we take to set and SMASH our business goals. We use real life examples and we set some goals LIVE on the show. Download your FREE guide: How to Set and Smash Your Goals and listen to this brand new episode right... NOW! "Everyone has the potential to do something amazing. All it takes is small step after small step. Action after action." We started setting goals for our business in mid 2015. Before that we were all about going with the flow and knowing that the universe had our backs. Which is 100% true! We honestly believe that when you're following your bliss (or passion or purpose), good stuff comes your way. But we have some pretty big visions for our business and as much as the universe is there, we also have to be there for ourselves. As Pablo Picasso said "Our goals can only be reached through a vehicle of a plan, in which we must fervently believe, and upon which we must vigorously act. There is no other route to success." Makes sense, right? As soon as we started to set goals, everything already flowing started to flow even better. Everything gained momentum. Instead of having our vision in our heads and hoping we remember what we need to do to achieve it... we write our BIG VISION on paper, on our white board and in trello. We know exactly what we need to tick off, by when, to get to where we wanna be. We're now on top of our revenue (holey moley!) and we have monthly goals for social media and website growth (this shows us that all that dicking around on Instagram is worth it... or not!). So yes, it's official like a referee's whistle, goals rock our merry socks. Goals have brought even more excitement to our business journey. They've brought more money to our business. They've allowed us to spread our merry message to more people all over the world. They've taken away the stress and unknown of running a business. Whether you've just started a business, you've had your biz for a while, or even if it's just a distant dream. NOW is the time to get goal setting and goal smashing. We are proof in your chia pudding that it will help you build your business in epic ways. Be sure to download your FREE goals guide HERE! Always merrymaking, Emma + Carla p.s you've got this! Welcome to today’s show! My guests are Emma and Carla Papas, also known as “The Merrymaker Sisters.” They are health and happiness advocates and passionate health coaches from Australia. Their website will inspire you with paleo recipes and tips for healthy lifestyles. Join us for more! Their journey really began in 2012 when Emma discovered her gluten intolerance. Carla joined her in her endeavor to improve her health by changing to a paleo diet. They embraced the new diet together. Carla posted photos of the new foods and recipes they created, which led to their blog and then their website. They wanted to learn how food can become our medicine and then share those findings with others. The sisters share the following about their journey: Their diets today include lots of vegetables, chicken, and fish, with very little red meat. They don’t always eat three set meals every day. They advocate listening to your body as to what it needs. They shop farmers’ markets for fresh, seasonal produce. They eat NO refined sugars, gluten, dairy (except butter!), grains, or beans. They encourage “intuitive eating,” which is all about listening to your body and how it reacts to certain food, and being open to change and new ideas. They actually schedule their meal-prep time in their calendar. As much as possible, they prep ahead on Sunday for the week by preparing large amounts of protein and vegetables. One tip is to prepare extras for dinner and package them up for tomorrow’s lunch. The key is to be organized and confident about healthy eating. A positive mindset is important. The sisters use affirmations daily to focus on positivity, gratefulness, and accountability. The sisters each share a favorite recipe that you don’t want to miss! You WILL be encouraged by listening to Emma and Carla. Their fun-loving attitude about food and life is contagious, so don’t miss our conversation! How to Reach Emma and Carla and more: Make it Merry is their cookbook with over 70 recipes that are delicious, healthy, and quick. They even have a healthy, sweet treat section! www.themerrymakersisters.com Now it’s your turn! WHAT changes have you made in your diet? HOW have those changes affected your health?
