Give online therapy a try at betterhelp.com/BENEATH and get on your way to being your best self.” ** When THERESA HARRIS appears on screen, you cannot take your eyes off of her. Beautiful, talented, and a skilled singer and dancer, she lights up any scene she's in. Despite appearing in over 100 films, she rarely received screen credit and most often played a maid, waitress, or other types of domestic servant. Her parts were small, but her charisma and presence on screen were enormous! As a black woman in the early days of Hollywood, she was limited in the roles she could perform by the restrictive Hayes Code of 1934 and the horrible Jim Crow laws of the South. Still, she is a welcome presence in so many classic films. This week, we look at the extraordinary life and career of the talented THERESA HARRIS.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: “Theresa Harris, Credited and Uncredited in Over 100 Films,” March 28, 2024, by Herb Boyd, New York Amsterdam News; “Just a Maid in Movies, But Not Forgotten,” April 21, 2011, by Manohla Dargis, The New York Times; “The Underrated Charms of Theresa Harris,” July 11, 2020, by Constance Cherise, TCM.com; “Theresa Harris: Television and Film Actress of the 1930s,” August 18, 2023, by Jae Jones, BackThen.com; “Actress Theresa Harris Hollywood Vixen Turned Servant,”September 2, 2011, by Veronica Wells, Madamenoire; IMDBPro.com; Wikipedia.com; Movies Mentioned:  Thunderbolt (1929), starring Fay Wray and George Brent; Hold Your Man (1932), starring Jean Harlow and Clark Gable; Baby Face (1933), starring Barbara Stanwyck and George Brent; Professional Sweetheart (1933), starring Ginger Rogers, Norman Foster, and Zasu Pitts; Horse Feathers (1932), starring The Marx Brothers and Thelma Todd; Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933), starring Joan Blondell, Dick Powell, Ruby Keeler, and Ginger Rogers; Morning Glory (1933), starring Katharine Hepburn and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr; Flying Down to Rio (1933), starring Delores Del Rio, Gene Raymond, Ginger Rogers, and Fred Astaire; Broadway Melody of 1936 (1935), starring Jack Benny and Eleanor Powell; Banjo On My Knee (1936), starring Barbara Stanwyck and Joel McCrea; Bargain With Bullets (aka The Gangster's On The Loose) (1937), starring Ralph Cooper and Theresa Harris; Jezebel (1938), starring Bette Davis, Henry Fonda, and George Brent; Tell No Tales (1939), starring Melvyn Douglas and Louise Platt; Buck Benny Rides Again (1940), starring Jack Benny, Ellen Drew, Eddie “Rochester” Anderson, and Theresa Harris; What's Buzzin' Cousin? In James 1:27  we read:"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. "But the reality is that adoption usually doesn't involve “Annie” style storylines. All kids will struggle at points during their development, but children who have been through the foster care system often have nuanced challenges. In light of this, how can the church better come alongside and care for adoptive families? Most of us as moms are already pretty overwhelmed and sometimes the suggestions for how to assist adoptive families sounds even more overwhelming.Adoptive mom Christine Gordon  encourages us to "think smaller." Christine shares encouragement and practical suggestions for little ways we can come alongside one another regardless of our parenting situation. Christine is a wife to Michael and mother of three, co-founder of At His Feet Studies and a visiting instructor at Covenant Theological Seminary.  This is a longer podcast, but absolutely worth your time.

Unfortunately, experiencing a form of Dementia is common, and can often emerge as we progress in our retirements. The annual cost of dementia to the Canadian economy and healthcare system is over 10 Billion dollars, and it's affecting over half a million people in Canada alone. So we all need to have compassion. And to borrow a quote I came across “Those with dementia are still people and they still have stories and they still have character and they are all individuals and they are all unique. And they just need to be interacted with on a human level”. The goal of todays episode is to help teach us all about what dementia truly is, and the ways in which we can create and access support for it as a community. In this week's episode, we're throwing it back to a conversation we shared years ago with Christine Gordon about how a Journeywoman seeks to know and love God more. Christine Gordon (aka Chris) is the co-founder of At His Feet Bible Studies and a visiting instructor at Covenant Theological Seminary, where she also attended and earned her Master of Arts in Theological Studies. We hope you'll walk away from this conversation encouraged to know and love God more through his Word and that you'll press into your local body of believers to encourage and be encouraged by your brothers and sisters who are also striving to that end.  Our hope is that this episode encourages you to simply seek to know and love God more today than you did yesterday. That is what being a Journeywoman is all about, day by day, until we find ourselves at THE day when we get to be together with him, forever.  DISCUSSION QUESTIONS What are the primary ways that God reveals himself to us? How can you know God more? How does knowing and loving God change who you are and the way you live? What specific steps can you take to grow in your knowledge of and love for God? Today we're continuing our current series, Blind Spots, by talking about a particularly sneaky one—self-sufficiency. For many of us the desire to “do it ourselves” and be independent can be incredibly strong, but today our friends Hope Blanton and Christine Gordon of At His Feet Studies are going to help us understand the beauty of dependence. We pray this conversation encourages you to lift your eyes from yourself, to release your grip on all the things you strive to do, and to look instead to Christ, whose grace is enough to sufficiently meet your every need.  DISCUSSION QUESTIONS What does the pull of self-sufficiency look like in your life?  What are we essentially saying when we decide to rely on ourselves instead of fully relying on God? How might you come alongside someone else in their limits or encourage someone else to embrace their God-given limits for the glory of God? This episode I am joined by Christine Gordon, Programming Manager of one of Melbourne's favourite independent bookshops. Christine has been Programming Manager at Readings for over a decade and considers it the best job in Australia! She was one of the founding members of the Stella Prize, sits on the Readings Foundation board and has been a judge on various literary awards. She is passionate about Australian literature and ensuring that reading continues to allow endless possibilities for everyone. We discuss Chris's most delicious moment working at Readings, the founding story of the Stella prize, her top tip for recommending books and of course, we pair some fabulous books with tasty treats! The pairings: The Spill by Imbi Neeme Winner of the 2019 Penguin Literary Prize In 1982, a car overturns on a remote West Australian road. Nobody is hurt, but the impact is felt for decades. Nicole and Samantha Cooper both remember the summer day when their mother, Tina, lost control of their car – but not in quite the same way. It is only after Tina's death, almost four decades later, that the sisters are forced to reckon with the repercussions of the crash. Nicole, after years of aimless drifting, has finally found love, and yet can't quite commit. And Samantha is hiding something that might just tear apart the life she's worked so hard to build for herself. Chris suggested room temperature Chardonnay and a frozen ham would pair perfectly with this book ... and she thinks the author would agree! State Highway One by Sam Coley Winner of the 2017 Richell Prize for Emerging Writers It's been years since Alex was in New Zealand, and years since he spent any one-on-one time with his twin sister, Amy. When they lose their parents in a shock accident it seems like the perfect time to reconnect as siblings. To reconnect with this country they call 'home'. As they journey the length of State Highway One, they will scratch at wounds that have never healed - and Alex will be forced to reckon with what coming home really means. Room temp again but beer or vodka this time with a burger - no veggies in sight - is Chris's pairing with this heartbreaking novel. Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall Luc O'Donnell's rock star parents split when he was young, and the father he's never met spent the next twenty years cruising in and out of rehab. Now that his dad's making a comeback, Luc is in the public eye, and one compromising photo is enough to ruin everything. To clean up his image, Luc has to find a nice, normal relationship...and Oliver Blackwood is as nice and normal as they come. He's a barrister, an ethical vegetarian, and he's never inspired a moment of scandal in his life. In other words: perfect boyfriend material. Unfortunately apart from being gay, single, and really, really in need of a date for a big event, Luc and Oliver have nothing in common. So they strike a deal to be publicity-friendly (fake) boyfriends until the dust has settled. Then they can go their separate ways and pretend it never happened. But the thing about fake-dating is that it can feel a lot like real-dating. Justine thinks brunch and a peach Bellini would be the perfect pairing for this light, bright, fizzy romp of a tale!

Today’s episode is my conversation with the ladies who make up At His Feet studies, Hope Blanton and Christine Gordon. Hope and Chris are wives, Moms (to humans and pups), both work in the counseling world, and are wise women who love the Lord and deeply love His Word.  In this conversation Hope and Chris share their heart with me for why they feel called to their work of unpacking scripture in a way that is deep and rich, but accessible in a crazy world. Their motto is: "We help busy women study the word of God with nourishing, rich Bible studies that can be done in 20 minutes." In our conversation, Hope and  Chris share beautiful encouragement about how to come to the Lord as you are, where you are, as well as practical insights for how to combat the lies and stigmas we have around how to engage the Bible, the wrestle as believers with goals, and the desire to grow, but to do so from a place of grace and not shame. This conversation ministered to me when I was in it, and it has fallen fresh on me yet again and I can’t wait for you to hear it.  The Father’s table is set for YOU. You, friend. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never been there, or if you have not been there in a long time, your place at the family table is always waiting for you. Even if you aren’t hungry, there is NO shame. The Bible says there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, it also says we are His children, and the perfect, loving Father does not expect you to live perfectly or to accept on the scraps of His feast. He delights in encountering and nourishing His children.  I cannot say enough great things about these women, their mission and their Bible Studies. You can find links below for ways to purchase ANY of their studies. What will this deliverance look like? Like an ear that listens for his child’s voice in the midst of the crowd. Like answers in the form of practical help. Like immediate or evenutal rescue. It will look like God’s presence, like him being next to his children when they are stressed, scared, or otherwise in trouble. It means that whatever suffering is allowed into their lives, God will walk through it with them. And in the end he will rescue them in the ultimate way, giving them ‘long life,’ probably referring to eternal life. The final and most decisive danger, death itself, is not to be feared by the one who clings to the Almighty.” - Psalms / Study 8 / ““Because He Knows My Name (Psalm 91)” -MOPS -Downton Abbey -gathering of Levites at the Wailing Wall -“We’re all just walking each other home.” - Ram Dass -Eve is the crown of creation  Here is a list of their available studies: Luke Part 1 Luke Part 2 Philippians Psalms Romans 1 Samuel Connecting with Hope and Chris: Instagram Facebook Website *The amazon links listed are affiliate links. On today’s episode of the Journeywomen podcast, we’re talking about anxiety and depression. I asked my friends Hope Blanton and Christine Gordon to join me because Hope is a trained counselor and Christine has formal theological training. Together, they write At His Feet Bible studies, which I cannot recommend highly enough, and all that said, you might be surprised to learn that both of them actually have and still wrestle with either anxiety or depression.    Hope A. Blanton is wife to Ray and mother of three. She earned her master's in clinical social work at Temple University. Currently she works as a counselor in San Antonio. She loves good food, making people laugh, and being outside. And Christine B. Gordon, MATS, is wife to Michael and mother of three. A true force of musical nature whose freewheeling whirlwind of passion, energy and soul-deep artistic vision transcends genre limitations and the trends of the moment, Christine Gordon has done and been it all. She’s studied opera, sung jazz at NYC’s Blue Note and R&B at the Apollo, launched her songwriting career co-writing with legendary producer Nile Rodgers and held court for over a decade on in the French West Indies as the “StBarthRockStar.” She’s headlined festivals all over the Caribbean and France/Europe, opening for greats like Akon, Shaggy and Kool and the Gang. The multi-talented singer-songwriter, dubbed “The Lioness” for the feral way she dominates the stage, has long defined her self-styled genre as “Classical Pop Rock Neo-Classic Soul Jazz.” Now back in L.A, she’s gearing up to conquer the dance floor with the drop of “Tidal Wave,” an infectious, crazy powerful track that’s primed to become a premier inspirational anthem of our time, helping lift our spirits above the endless din of division and negativity. Set for release on the first day of Summer, Volume One features ten tracks with powerful productions and remixes from Steve Smooth/DirtyWerk (Ariana Grande, Janet Jackson, DJ Kue) Stonebridge (RobynS), Grammy Award Winning Dave Aude (Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez) and Liam Keegan (Sia, Usher, Enrique Iglesias, Usher, Carly Rae Jepsen). as well as the Original version along with a stunning acoustic rework. TIDALWAVE bursts forth with the high octane force its name implies, its intense musical pulse underscoring metaphor-rich lyrics of hope, survival and thriving against the constant undertow. The singer wrote the original version of “Tidal Wave” with “SupaDupa” Patou and Alex “Cobra” Piper, both founding members of the legendary St. Maarten based Afro-Caribbean band Youth Waves.
