ELLEN DREW: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH (069) Whether playing the sweet girl next door or the world-weary casino boss's moll, ELLEN DREW was an incredibly versatile leading lady who was a major star in the 1940s and 50s. She made a career of playing a wide range of roles in various genres — from Westerns to comedies to dramas to horror movies. She was nicknamed “The Candy Store Cinderella” because she was discovered scooping ice cream in a candy store on Hollywood Boulevard. And who do you think discovered her? You'll be quite surprised to find out. In this week's episode, we discuss our Star of the Month, ELLEN DREW. To wrap up the year, Have You Ever Seen episode #636 reviews our first Peter Sellers movie in over 10 years. He was flawlessly funny in Dr. Strangelove (which is the other film we reviewed) and he's note-perfect in Being There too. Hal Ashby had a very-underrated run of greatness in the '70s, directing powerful dramas like Coming Home, but also making truly funny-yet-cynical yuck-fests like Shampoo and this. In Being There, Sellers plays an illiterate gardener who supposedly-intelligent people believe is the wisest man they know. Melvyn Douglas won an Oscar playing a dupe who projects so much onto this blank slate, partly because he's a well-dressed, pleasant, older man. The film is also prescient about presidential politics, with Sellers spouting inoffensive platitudes...and then there's that infamous Jesus imagery at the end. It's quite a ride. So we hope you like to listen as much as Chance/Chauncey likes to watch as the Ellises bid you Happy New Year and present a gab about Being There. A terrible storm forces weary travelers to spend the night at an... old dark house, but they find the inhabitants there to be on the wrong side of trustworthy. The always-awesome Ryan joins us to talk about the 1932 classic The Old Dark House.
Illeana Douglas is an avid student of the movies who grew up, stepped onto a set and entered the big screen of her childhood dreams. Her deep interest and knowledge of film legend and lore provided her with rich opportunities to engage in meaningful conversations with the stars and directors she has imagined meeting and then encountered along her way, including Robert De Niro, Robert Redford, Marlon Brando, Martin Scorsese, Roddy McDowall and so many more. With a rare ability to manifest full circle moments, Illeana has worked with the two men who upended her childhood, Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda. Their film, Easy Rider had inspired her father to check out of suburbia and into a hippy commune, leaving the family financially destitute. That struggle is documented in her award winning book, I Blame Dennis Hopper. As a starving actress, Illeana went to work for a publicist in the Brill Building and years later, starred in Grace of My Heart, about songwriters in the Brill Building. Her fascination with her lost suburban childhood led her to write a new book called, Connecticut in the movies, WHILE she was restoring her own Connecticut dream home, a similar desperate effort to that of Mr. Blandings. Connecticut's role in American movies has evolved over the years from that of a metaphor for healthy, country living (Holiday Inn, Christmas In Connecticut) to a representation of our post-war suburban shift, the strain the work commute placed on marriages and the racism found in planned communities, (The Man In The Gray Flannel Suit, Gentleman's Agreement) to a depiction of dark suburbia and societal collapse (The Swimmer, The Ice Storm), to horror and dystopia. (The Stepford Wives, Let's Scare Jessica To Death.) Illeana, is a complete delight and she joins us for an in depth discussion about all things movie and many things Connecticut. Plus, elections are coming and Myra Page and Joan Bowman are here from Commit To Democracy to teach us how we can all do more than just vote this critical election season!Path Points of Interest:Illeana DouglasConnecticut in the Movies: From Dream Houses To Dark SuburbiaI Blame Dennis Hopper: And Other Stories Lived From In And Out Of The MoviesIlleana Douglas on WikipediaIlleana Douglas on IMDBIlleana Douglas on InstagramMedia Path PodcastGift of DemocracyCommit To DemocracyCommit To Democracy FacebookCommit To Democracy YoutubeCommit To Democracy Instagram

Give online therapy a try at betterhelp.com/BENEATH and get on your way to being your best self.” ** When THERESA HARRIS appears on screen, you cannot take your eyes off of her. Beautiful, talented, and a skilled singer and dancer, she lights up any scene she's in. Despite appearing in over 100 films, she rarely received screen credit and most often played a maid, waitress, or other types of domestic servant. Her parts were small, but her charisma and presence on screen were enormous! As a black woman in the early days of Hollywood, she was limited in the roles she could perform by the restrictive Hayes Code of 1934 and the horrible Jim Crow laws of the South. Still, she is a welcome presence in so many classic films. This week, we look at the extraordinary life and career of the talented THERESA HARRIS. We begin a new year of the show this week, and kick off the campaign by welcoming These Estates and Oiseaux musician and Briarpatch publisher John Cameron for an unseen selection from his collection, a prescient political satire that is now 52 years old but could release today with few alterations and still feel timely. It's 1972's The Candidate, directed by Michael Ritchie, and starring Robert Redford, Peter Boyle, Melvyn Douglas, Don Porter, Allen Garfield, Karen Carlson and Michael Lerner. It's a comedy without any jokes that still manages to be fairly funny, at least when its bleak political outlook doesn't feel equal parts harrowing and deadly accurate. Plus: J Mo's hooked on Pocket Card Jockey, while Hayley and John are willing to die for Casino Regina. Other works discussed on this episode include Oppenheimer, Dune: Part Two, Aquaman & The Last Kingdom, Beau Is Afraid, The Devils, Go, Ocean's Eleven, Bulworth, Fletch, Fletch Lives, season 6 of The West Wing, Parks & Recreation, The Thick of It, In The Loop, Death of Stalin, The Newsroom (CBC), The Ides of March, Our Brand Is Crisis, and Lions For Lambs among many more. If you'd like to watch The Candidate before listening to our discussion, some maniac has posted the entire movie for free on YouTube. And we thank them. We'll be back next week as Year 2 on the pod continues with a shot at redemption for two top stars who have recently wronged us on the pod by being in movies we watched that were not good. Yes, Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer can completely redeem themselves as we'll be back to watch 1994's Tombstone, a 90s VHS classic that somehow both hosts have never seen before. It's currently streaming on Disney+ if you want to watch it, and of course we're wrapping up the month the week after with our monthly canon submission, Christopher Nolan's TENET. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Illeana Douglas, Acclaimed Actress, Producer, Director, Author, “Connecticut in the Movies” About Harvey's guests: Today's guest, Illeana Douglas, is a highly acclaimed actress, writer, producer, and director, who's brought us some of the most memorable performances in classic films including “Goodfellas”, “Guilty By Suspicion”, “Cape Fear”, “Alive”, “Search and Destroy”, “To Die For”, “Happy, Texas”, “Message in a Bottle” and many more. And yes, all of those blood curdling screams in “The Last Temptation of Christ” are hers, and yes, she's the girl who got her face bitten off by Robert De Niro in “Cape Fear”. On television you've seen her in dozens of movies, miniseries and TV shows including “Weapons of Mass Distraction”, “Bella Mafia”, “Lansky”, “Action”, “Law & Order: SVU”, “The Skinny”, “Goliath” and “Six Feet Under”, for which she received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series. She also created, wrote and frequently directed the world's first-ever branded web series, “Easy to Assemble”. In addition to winning a whole slew of prestigious awards including 6 Webbies, our guest – in my opinion - also achieved the impossible: she actually made it COOL to shop at IKEA. Our guest is also a great lover of classic films, which comes as no surprise, given that she's the granddaughter of the legendary actor Melvyn Douglas. She can often be seen on the Turner Classic Movies network, interviewing cinematic giants and hosting the Spotlight Series, including “Funny Ladies”, “Second Looks”, and “Trailblazing Women”. She's participated in scores of documentaries about film history, and she produced and hosted the highly popular podcast, “The Film Scene”, in which she interviews celebrities about classic movies. Her first book, entitled, “I Blame Dennis Hopper, And Other Stories from a Life Lived In and Out of the Movies”, was named “one of the best books of 2015” by Entertainment Weekly. And her latest book is a real gem for film buffs. It's called “Connecticut in the Movies: From Dream Houses to Dark Suburbia”, and it explains how the cinematic perception of Connecticut, originally created in Hollywood movies like “Bringing Up Baby” and “Christmas in Connecticut”, has shifted in recent years. The book offers some surprising conclusions about just what it means to be a “Connecticut movie.” For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ To see more about Illeana Douglas, go to: https://www.illeanadouglas.com/https://www.facebook.com/Illeanaramahttps://www.instagram.com/illeanaramahttps://twitter.com/illeanarama #IlleanaDouglas #harveybrownstoneinterviews

Ernst Lubitsch is one of the directors of the classic era who hasn't stayed in people's minds as much as others have. He's not as revered as, say, Billy Wilder...who happens to be a co-writer of Ninotchka. But Ernst had the famous "Lubitsch Touch", where he was able to effortlessly blend jokes and romance with a good story as well as anybody ever has. The hook here is that the always-serious Greta Garbo gets to be funny ("Garbo Laughs"). And she's great in this. She's lovable when she softens, but playing it straight as a stern Russian was her route to comic gold. She and Melvyn Douglas are a wonderful rom-com couple. As for Ninotchka's story, it's all about how capitalism is fun while communism is a dreary, almost-cultlike oppression. Politics has rarely resulted in such mirth. So loosen up and put on your ugly hat as the 569th edition of Have You Ever Seen digs into a classic comedy that's---get this---actually funny. And Just To Be Clear: Sig Ruman is German and Alexander Granach was born in what is now Ukraine, while Felix Bressart was born in what was then East Prussia in Germany...but is now Russia. So you could argue that at least he really was Russian. We're sponsored by the capitalists at Sparkplug Coffee. They give our listeners a onetime 20% discount if they just use our "HYES" promo code. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Joel Thurm, Casting Director, Author, “Sex, Drugs and Pilot Season: Confessions of a Casting Director” About Harvey's guest: Today's guest, Joel Thurm, is a show business veteran whose name you may not know, but whose work you have most definitely seen and loved. For over 40 years, he was one of the most sought-after, powerful and respected casting directors in Hollywood. Starting in the early 70's, as a casting director at CBS, then casting TV shows for superstar producer Aaron Spelling, then becoming Senior Vice President of Talent and Casting at NBC for 10 years, and also serving as Vice President of Television Talent at Paramount Studios, our guest helped create entertainment that has brought countless hours of joy to millions of people around the world. On the big screen, he was responsible for casting 3 mega-hit movies: “Grease”, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” and “Airplane”. And in the world of television, he cast dozens of hugely popular TV series including “Taxi”, “Fantasy Island”, “The Bob Newhart Show”, “Starsky & Hutch”, “Charlie's Angels”, “Cheers”, “Miami Vice”, “The Golden Girls”, “Seinfeld”, “L.A. Law”, “Hill Street Blues”, “Night Court” and believe me, I'm just scratching the surface. He produced and cast the Emmy award winning TV movie, “The Boy in the Plastic Bubble” starring John Travolta, as well as the 5-time Emmy award winning miniseries, “The Lives of Benjamin Franklin”, starring Melvyn Douglas and Michael Learned, and the Emmy award winning TV movie “The Gathering” starring Ed Asner and Maureen Stapleton, as well as the 1988 TV remake of “Inherit the Wind” starring Kirk Douglas and Jason Robards, which won 3 Emmy awards. And my favourite of all his TV movies is “An Early Frost”, starring Gena Rowlands and Ben Gazzara, which was the first movie about AIDS, winning 4 Emmy awards. He was responsible for launching the careers of countless stars including Nick Nolte, John Ritter, David Hasselhoff, Amy Irving, James Woods, Lorenzo Lamas, Danny DeVito, Christina Hendricks and dozens more. And get this: HE was the one who cast Ted Danson in “Cheers”, and he was the one who cast the wonderful Georgia Engel to play Ted Baxter's wife in “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”. And now, he's written a fascinating, entertaining and insightful memoir entitled, “Sex, Drugs and Pilot Season: Confessions of a Casting Director”. This week we are reviewing one of Indy's childhood favourites, the Canadian cult classic horror movie The Changeling! We discuss the structure of haunted house movies, the clever direction, tension building, grief, and what we want done with our corpses. The Changeling on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zm4rZJozMJc&t=3007s&ab_channel=KingsofHorror The Changeling is a 1980 Canadian supernatural psychological horror film directed by Peter Medak and starring George C. Scott, Trish Van Devere, and Melvyn Douglas. Its plot follows an esteemed New York City composer who relocates to Seattle, Washington, where he moves into a mansion he comes to believe is haunted. The screenplay is based upon events that writer Russell Hunter claimed he experienced while he was living in the Henry Treat Rogers mansion in the Cheesman Park neighborhood of Denver, Colorado, in the late 1960s; Hunter served as a co-writer of the film. Legendary filmmaker and former playwright Martin Ritt directed this family drama set on a farm starring the late, great Paul Newman as the titular Hud who works with the ranch with his father (Melvyn Douglas) and younger brother (Brandon De Wilde) while also making their lives difficult. You see Hud is a scoundrel who drinks too much and he's not making things any better for his family as they experience a looming crisis which could destroy their farm - this could very well be the most irredeemable character Newman ever played and it did earn him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. He didn't win that year but others in the cast did including Douglas and Patricia Neal for Best Actress. This film received enormous acclaim upon release while also being a sizeable hit and.....it's about to turn 60. :) Host: Geoff Gershon Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

It's a stormy night somewhere in Wales, and three travelers are having a rough go of it: married couple Phillip and Margaret Waverton, and their passenger in the back seat, the dapper Penderel. That's when they come upon a house, which is, shockingly, old… and dark. They manage to gain entrance after convincing the mute, lumbering butler, Morgan, that they are indeed in distress, and are soon greeted by the house's main occupants, the elderly Femms, Horace and his hard of hearing sister Rebecca. The Femms offer the travelers supper, but as the sternly religious Rebecca finds it inappropriate, no beds. As they sit down to eat a meal of meat and potatoes, two more travelers burst in – the jolly Sir William Porterhouse and his personal companion, Gladys Duquesne. Or is it Perkins? As the evening wends from dinner to conversation to an interest in the rest of the house, things take a turn for the weird, and soon, all are ensnared in a trap – not just to make it through the storm, but to get out of the house alive. Four old men hold a dark secret, and the past is coming back to haunt them in this 1981 adaptation of the popular, labyrinthine Peter Straub novel. Grant is back to talk about Ghost Story, as our 13 Days of Halloween series continues.
For this MGM 1941 episode, we again pair a classic with a rarity: Cukor's A Woman's Face, starring Joan Crawford, Melvyn Douglas, and Conrad Veidt, and The Trial of Mary Dugan, directed by Norman Z. McLeod and starring Laraine Day, Robert Young, and Tom Conway (aka "The Nice George Sanders"). We discuss A Woman's Face as a proto-Warner Bros. Crawford noir, the persona of Robert Young, the uses of no-subtext acting, and the starkly different construction of these two women-on-trial movies. And in our Fear and Moviegoing in Toronto segment, we take a brief look at Buck and the Preacher, directed by and starring Sidney Poitier (and co-starring future acteurist spotlight subject Ruby Dee, although she doesn't get a lot of screen time in this one). After twenty years in front of a camera, Loretta Young walked out of her contract with Twentieth Century Fox and became a freelance star. Darryl Zanuck blackballed her as a result, which lead to months without any script offers. She began her independent film career in Columbia studio, because Harry Cohn was one filmmaker brazen enough to defy Zanuck. Loretta made two pictures: The Doctor Takes a Wife (with Ray Milland) and He Stayed for Breakfast (with Melvyn Douglas). Both pictures were critical and commercial successes and established her facility with light comedy.
