The story of Christmas is a true story, but one that too often becomes sentimentalised, sanitised, and/or secularised. The truth to be told is that that the Christmas story is both triumphant and tragic. It is a story of God breaking in to the darkness of a sin-cursed, and too often hopeless, world, but it is also a story filled with tragedy of suffering and persecution. Fundamentally, it is a story of God's faithfulness. We consider this story, from Matthew 1, under four broad headings: 1. The Christmas Story is a Marvellous (and Messy) Messianic Story (vv. 1–17) 2. The Christmas Story is a Majestically Mysterious Story, (v. 18) 3. The Christmas Story is a Mercifully Miraculous Story (vv. 19–21) 4. The Christmas Story Needs to Be a Personally Meaningful Story (vv. 22–25)

The Gospel of John profoundly presents Jesus as the Son of God (20:31), a theme that causes careful readers and expositors to feel overwhelmed and inadequate. The prologue (1:1–18) is a case in point. It is so profound, and yet John expected his Spirit-guided readers to get it: that God became man in order to save us from our sins. Yahweh, the great “I AM,” became a man to rescue us from spiritual and eternal darkness. To benefit from this rescue, we must believe that the Jesus of history is the God who precedes history. We must believe that Jesus is the I AM—that, on Christmas, the I AM was born and laid in a manger. We need to believe that, on Christmas, the I AM was born.

Tis the season to get stressed out, amiright? So many departments coming together. So many volunteers serving with all their heart. The standards are set high for this year's Christmas Services (happening on a Sunday this year BTW.) But how do you manage the creative tensions? How do you get people to work together. What does it look like to get people to focus towards an aligned direction, often meaning they would need to set aside their own desires? This is how it often feels working at a Church in Christmas (or Easter for that matter.) But it doesn't have to be. To this end we're bringing in Ben Stapley to the conversation. His 17th Christmas working for the church, Ben has navigated this tension for a while, and knows how to not only manage the tension but thrive in it. So jump in the podcast, and learn not just how to survive Christmas, but how to create a healthy culture that will help you survive all 52 weeks in the year! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thechurchdigital/message
