In the past, you may have heard Clark Vandeventer talk about adding steps to the process. The more you elongate the major gift process and slowly bring your donors along, the safer you'll be. Clark recently heard Amazon Founder Jeff Bezos share the same idea with the phrase, "Slow is smooth and smooth is fast." The phrase "slow is smooth and smooth is fast" is a military saying that emphasizes the importance of taking time to do things carefully and methodically, rather than rushing and risking mistakes. It can also be thought of as the power of strategic thinking and deliberate action. Clark also shared in this episode that We are giving away FREE ACCESS to MasterClass! Clark shares an incredible mental test he picked up from Robin for you to use whenever you hear yourself saying, "I don't have time." Her JOY METRIC also inspired a twist on a mental exercise Clark has been doing for 20+ years. Great quotes from Robin: "The pursuit of movement unlocks endorphins but the pursuit of movement also enables us to have a relationship with discomfort and discomfort becomes less scary. so when things get real like when a capital r in our lives we have these smaller less intense, hopefully less stress inducing moments where we rose above.  I believe that willpower and resiliency are also muscles worth exercising and they really go hand in hand so when you are willing to get uncomfortable physically you become tenacious mentally and I talk about ritualizing discomfort because we create a ritual around I'm going to go this distance today or I'm going to push this intensity today." "Pain will become power." ONE INTERESTING THING IN THIS INTERVIEW --> There's some pretty serious division and polarization in the USA today, but nothing compared to what Sierra Leone has faced in the past. Jo Anne talked about how she admires Sierra Leone's ABILITY TO RECOVER FROM A BRUTAL WAR WITH TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION. Additional observations on Sierra Leone being a country where Christians and Muslims peacefully co-exist. As the founder and previous CEO of World Hope International, Jo Anne directed the faith-based relief and development organization into over 30 countries to alleviate suffering and injustice. During her time as CEO, she was involved with several countries experiencing fragility, conflict and violence with a strong focus on the role of faith. Her previous 30 years of pastoral ministry contributed to the effectiveness of the work. Following 12 years of service to World Hope International she was elected as the General Superintendent of The Wesleyan Church worldwide. She served in that position for eight years. At the close of her tenure, she was invited to serve as the Ambassador for The Wesleyan Church for the following four years by action of the General Board to retain the considerable connections and influence she has had to extend the influence of the Church. Jo Anne serves on the board of directors of many organizations such as Bread for the World, Vice-Chair of the Board of National Association of Evangelicals, National Religious Partnership for the Environment, Council on Faith of the World Economic Forum, previously President Obama's Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships and others. She holds a master's degree in Counseling Psychology, continued graduate studies in Historical Theology and has been granted five honorary doctorates. She is an ordained minister of the Wesleyan Church. "Travel is one of the best personal development tools. You voluntarily insert yourself into situations where you don't understand everything, where the culture and thinking is different, and you maneuver through the frustration, the celebration and the new experiences. " - Sabina King You've got to hear Sabina King talk about Bali! Nyepi is a Balinese "Day of Silence" and her description and analysis in this episode is fascinating! In this episode Clark Vandeventer interviews Sabina King. Sabina and her family were based in Bali -- or used Bali as a homebase -- for 5 years -- and she still has Airbnbs in Bali. In this interview we talk about her family's move from Chicago to Denver -- and Denver to Costa Rica -- and then Costa Rica to Bali. Clark became acquainted with Sabina and her family around 2010 or 11 when he and his wife had crashed and burned and were trying to re-invent their life. At that time, blogs were a big thing -- and they got connected with so many cool people around the world. Sabina was one of those people. Sabina is someone who knows how to build a life around the things that she values. Born in Poland. Her family immigrated to America when she was 5 years old. Sabina has been around the world -- lots of travel -- all over Central America, Western Europe, New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Korea, Mexico, Canada -- to name a few. Asheland, Oregon has been their base over the past few years. In fact, I WANT it to look and be different! But my home country, the United States, is a country of immigrants, and one thing that's great about America is that we've taken the best stuff from all over the world and made it ours. So when I travel and find something cool in another country, I ask the question, "Why don't we do that?" 11:22 - "If you have a donor who you think could give a million dollars, don't spend two years cultivating them for a million dollar gift." In this episode, Clark Vandeventer emphasizes the importance of balancing relationship-building and asking for gifts in fundraising. While it's crucial to cultivate relationships with potential donors and avoid coming across as someone who is always asking for money, it's also necessary to let people know that you are a fundraiser. Timing is also crucial, as it's recommended to ask for smaller gifts early on in the relationship to gauge a donor's interest and willingness to give, rather than spending a lot of time cultivating them for a larger gift. Clark suggests that fundraisers should identify potential donors who can give early gifts without much cultivation. These early gifts can help fundraisers determine the level of giving that a donor is capable of and can lead to larger donations in the future. Clark advises that fundraisers need to become known as fundraisers at some point in order to ask for donations effectively. However, they should also be mindful of not getting a reputation of always asking for money in every conversation. Clark also discusses the question of how long one should cultivate a donor before asking for a gift. Clark explains that there is no set timeline for this and that fundraising is not a science. Clark gives examples of meeting with a donor 19 times before asking for a major gift and also meeting with donors and asking for a gift on the first meeting. The timeline for cultivating donors can vary based on the type of gift being asked for. For example, for a major gift, it may take longer to cultivate the donor, while for a smaller gift, the cultivation process may be shorter Overall, the episode emphasizes the importance of cultivating donors, but also highlights the need for flexibility and adapting to each individual donor and situation. Fundraisers need to find a balance between building relationships and making asks, as both are crucial for successful fundraising. By identifying potential donors and strategically asking for early gifts to determine their level of giving, fundraisers can increase their chances of success. In this episode Clark Vandeventer introduces the Dealing with 40 Project. In short, Clark's had a really hard time dealing with 40. And he's spent a lot of time processing where he is and how he has not lived up to his own expectations. He's wanted to talk to people. To go back to old mentors and talk with them. To talk to some of the men and women who knew him when he was 20 years old. And they're 60 or 80 now. Talk with other people he looks up to who are a little older and a little wiser and talk with them about life. And ask questions like, "Did you feel this way when you were 40?" Dealing with 40 is a series of interviews where Clark asks deep questions about life. From Clark: This a declaration, a plea, and an invitation. A declaration to live and to seek my destiny. A declaration to become the very best version of myself and to do great things. A plea that you would be patient with me, and with others. I have issues and I'm insecure. Please give me grace and know that even if I say something foolish or do something wrong that my heart is in the right place. Remember this of others too. Be kind. I'm guessing that you have your issues too. So please, please, let us affirm one another. I think we all probably spend enough time condemning ourselves. An invitation to join me on this journey. Lean in with me. Share the lessons that you have learned and the perspective you have gained. Listen to the wisdom shared by the people I interview as a part of this project. Commit to being the best version of yourself.
