In this episode of The Remarkable Project Jay speaks with Ted Molter, a seasoned marketing and PR pro formerly CMO of San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, about why taking a strategic approach to authenticity is something more businesses should consider, how online experience can help contend with changes in offline behaviour, and the positive worth-of-mouth effects of intentional complaint handling. Ted Molter has been deploying marketing and PR skills in the attractions industry to advance the mission of zoos, aquariums, and family-oriented experiences for over 30 years. With a deep love for animals, Ted has enjoyed a long career that included key leadership roles at SeaWorld Ohio and the CMO position for San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, where he led a rebranding program that drove revenues, donations and awareness. Now, as a marketing consultant and collaborator, he advocates the practical skills of using and understanding data, media training to communicate key messages, and effective marketing strategy to engage audiences in mission and brand devotion. Ted describes himself as a “return on mission” specialist, and considers it his responsibility to find the intersection of passion and ration, ensuring that revenue growth provides a maximum benefit to mission, people and the organizations he works with and supports. He is an active member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums; past education and marketing committee chair, board member and the founding foundation board chair for the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions; past chair of San Diego Tourism Authority; and board member and past chairman of the California Travel Association. With the opportunity to reach families around the world with the mission of conservation, education and family fun, Ted has continued to find ways to combine his passion for animals with an endless desire to share the wonders of nature through innovative marketing and communications programs in Southern California and beyond. Three Remarkable Quotes"Really, what we were trying to capture was hearts and minds, not wallets.""I'm hoping for the collaboration economy quite honestly. If we're as connected as we all are, imagine how powerful things could be if we were more collaborative with the tools that are there.""Just make people feel valid. If you do that, you get the other things. It's when you treat them like numbers…they know it, they feel it and it effects their experience with you. Connect with TedFind him on LinkedinLearn more about San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance via their website

Sometimes being green means charging ahead even when everyone else is applying the brakes. Robin Chase is a serial transportation entrepreneur, but she had no idea what she was getting into with her first project — and that’s how she pushed the market forward.Robin is the co-founder and former CEO of Zipcar, the car sharing service that connects members to available cars nearby, which they can use for an hourly or daily fee. It’s a recognizable model today, but being first came with unseen obstacles.First, Robin hadn’t realized that the software that would link the internet to the car for the customer didn’t exist. “We had to build that and it was incredibly challenging,” she says. In the meantime, everything was done manually. In addition to being time-consuming, this led to a potentially disastrous mistake. While closing Zipcar’s Series A round, Robin suddenly realized her original revenue calculations were way off. According to her new calculations, Zipcar needed to raise the fee for daily rentals.Because she believes that honesty and empathy are integral to customer service, Robin personally dealt with angry customer phone calls to explain the situation.“If you've built yourself to be a responsive and thoughtful and consumer-centric company, then missteps or errors get put into a larger track record of how you address issues,” she says. The Zipcar sharing model is commonplace today, whether you’re renting an ebike or scooter, or using a rideshare app. But Robin thinks that some new companies in this space are unstable.“Investors that have way too much money and no knowledge are throwing gigantic sums of money at companies that are too young and have not yet figured out the business model or the operating model,” she says. That said, Robin is a fan of modes of transport that replace personally owned cars, which have long been prioritized even though not everyone can afford them. On that note, she also wants to see local governments set legislation that makes it easier for these companies to operate safely and responsibly. “I would love us to build what I'm calling a freedom network: a network for pedestrians and unlicensed vehicles that enable all of us to regain the freedom of mobility that we once had so that for the 50% of your trips that are less than three miles, you could go without a car without putting your life in danger.”Featured Entrepreneur

With technology changing at blinding speeds, businesses often struggle to understand what is real and what is hype. Blockchain, which is the technology behind BitCoin and other cryptocurrencies - is one of such technologies that offer a lot of promise but rarely understood. 5G is yet another great technology that claims to revolutionize how we connect and communicate. But do these two innovations have anything in common? Together can they provide a better economic value to businesses? Our guest, David Walsh, is one of the finest technologists, investors, and business leaders. Over the past 30+ years, he has successfully disrupted and innovated technology across a wide range of markets including Automated Trading Systems, Financial Extranet, and Embedded Cloud Communications. He has built, scaled, and sold companies from start-ups to global enterprises, generating over $3B of cumulative gains. I enjoyed working with David on several initiatives, and I was always amazed by his ability to connect the dots across the entire value chain of technology. My motive in today’s discussion is to hear this great visionary investor bring reality to blockchain in the context of 5G by understanding the challenges that leaders might face when applying these technologies.

Panzura's CEO Patrick Harr joins George Crump on this episode of Storage Intensity to discuss how to design storage infrastructures for the global collaborative economy so organizations can tap into the best talent. IT needs to bring the data to those workers. At the same time, IT needs to supply distributed applications with the most up to date data instances. In the past, organizations used to replicate data between locations, but that leads to out of control storage costs, impossible data protection, and not being 100% sure that the right data is in the right place at the right time. During the podcast, we discuss the importance of establishing a single source of truth and how to accomplish that goal.

Cities need to move forward and embrace these models.” Owyang’s company helps larger companies incorporate aspects of the collaborative economy into their businesses. Albert Cañigueral, the OuiShare Connector for Spain and Latin America, is a Barcelona-based sharing economy expert helping to organize the fifth edition of OuiShare Fest, which takes place this July in Paris. Cañigueral describes himself as passionate about, but also critical of, the burgeoning sharing economy. Cañigueral acknowledged that sometimes tensions arise between global, American-based corporations and smaller, local startups. Global companies like Uber face regulatory challenges abroad similar to those they face in the United States. In Spain, only professional, licensed drivers can drive with Uber, and Uber was banned from the country for over a year, returning in March 2016. According to Cañigueral, the primary source of tension around the sharing economy in Barcelona is related to rental prices and housing shortages. Barcelona’s City Hall is focusing on growing and building the “commons-oriented collaborative economy,” and is particularly interested in promoting open source software.

The CMO Show
Rachel Botsman on the collaborative economy and why trust is not a tagline

Trust: it's a lucrative and aspirational factor in any brand story, but all too often we fail to understand its true meaning – or value. When it comes to making informed decisions, consumers are increasingly driven by the same value – trust – which strikes at the very core of how products and services are being accessed, delivered and evaluated. In this episode of The CMO Show, Rachel Botsman drops by to shed light on the role of trust in building your brand, and how the collaborative economy is driving this. An author, teacher, speaker and recognised authority on the role of trust in the collaborative economy, Botsman has a passion for understanding human behaviour and the reasons we trust companies, ideas, and each other, as much as we do. “I can tell you the one thing not to do, which is to say, ‘You should trust this bank'. Although that is a tagline believe it or not,” says Botsman. “There's this notion that if you say it, people will believe you and there is something really important in that.” “Now, with platforms where you have a producer and consumer, you can no longer control that relationship. So getting millions of people that this company doesn't employ and doesn't control behaving on brand, or delivering a quality product or service, involves a whole new way of thinking about marketing and design.” Tune in as Mark Jones and JV Douglas chat to Botsman about the future of the collaborative economy, building a trusted brand, and thinking about the bigger picture.

The collaborative (or sharing) economy is heating up, with dramatic increases in both the number of startups that employ the model and the number of consumers who use them. In its annual survey on the collaborative economy, Crowd Companies has crunched the data to identify (among other things) key opportunities for traditional companies to compete as collaborative-economy companies increasingly threaten to take market share away from them. In this FIR Interview, Shel Holtz talks with Crowd Companies founder and CEO Jeremiah Owyang about the results of the study, with a focus on the three primary ways businesses can remain competitive as the collaborative economy continues to heat up. Jeremiah and Shel also digress into related topics, including the impact autonomous vehicles will have on both traditional and collaborative companies.Continue Reading → The post FIR Interview: Jeremiah Owyang on competing in the collaborative economy appeared first on FIR Podcast Network.

You may have heard of the sharing or collaborative economy where consumers are getting what they want from each other isntead of through corporations. But what is driving this new model, how does it impact businesses, and what does the future of the sharing economy look like? These are some of the questions we explore with my guest this week, Jeremiah Owyang, the founder of Crowd Companies.   (Music by Ronald Jenkees)

Welcome to episode #427 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. It's not just the marketing of a business that fascinates me. It's everything about the future of work. This includes the actual physical office spaces that we use (and, yes, that could be at home, Starbucks or even in the tallest building of the financial district). How will teams be structured? What will the leaders of the future look like? Is Mark Zuckerberg the prototype of the CEO? It's these same thoughts that consume Jacob Morgan. So much so, that he recently published a business book titled, The Future Of Work - Attract New Talent, Build Better Leaders And Create A Competitive Organization. Jacob also wrote The Collaborative Organization in 2012 and advises many Fortune 1000 businesses on innovation and the future of work. So, if we live in a world where more and more people can start a business in their garage and sell a seven-person startup for billions of dollars, what does the future of work look and feel like? Welcome to episode #372 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast. Jeremiah Owyang is paying less attention to social business and much more to what has been called, The Collaborative Economy. He believes that the time is rip and that the collaborative economy is going to change everything (again). He's currently Partner of Customer Strategy at Altimeter Group, a research based advisory firm started by Charlene Li (Groundswell and Open Leadership). I've been following Jeremiah (and admiring him) since his days at Forrester Research and was one of the earlier readers/fans of his blog, Web Strategist. In June of this year, he launched his latest research report called, The Collaborative Economy. This is how Owyang explains it: "Right now, customers are sharing media and ideas on social technologies, in the near future, they'll use similar technologies to share products and services, which will cause a ripple of impacts far more disruptive than what we've seen before." Think about Uber, AirBnB and even Netflix. A world where we share stuff... not own it (a space that has been blossoming since the social Web was first introduced). I spent an afternoon with Owyang a few weeks back in Menlo Park (but we recorded this conversation prior to that). He's got a great mind for business, technology and marketing. Enjoy the conversation... Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Twist Image Podcast - Episode #372 - Host: Mitch Joel. Running time: 49:12.
