Robby has a chat with Colin Campbell, the Director of Engineering at Tucows. Colin delves into the professional ethos of software development, emphasizing that the caliber of an engineer's work is a reflection of their daily habits. He stressed the importance of humility for software engineers, arguing that it is crucial for continuous improvement and effective teamwork. He also talked about the strategic approach of doing nothing during Sprint Zero, suggesting that thorough planning and groundwork are essential before diving into actual code deployment. The conversation transitions to the practical aspects of the craft, sharing insights from his experience of refactoring the OpenSRS platform at Tucows. Colin expresses a strong stance against total rewrites of systems, except when transitioning to new platforms, advocating for the incremental and strategic improvements using the Strangler Fig pattern. He also describes the satisfaction derived from identifying and rectifying “code smells” through refactoring, underscoring this practice as a source of professional fulfillment. Moreover, he provides a glimpse into the life of platform engineers, detailing the intricacies of supporting application developers and the necessity of being decisively focused when addressing specific programming tasks, hence being “ruthless” to the ticket at hand to ensure quality and efficiency. “We need to cultivate a growth mindset”. It sounds motivating and uplifting, but what exactly does it mean, and just how aware are we of open and fixed mindsets? Research carried out by American psychologist, Carol Dweck, suggests that when organisations embrace and nurture an organisational culture which enables a growth mindset, employees feel more empowered and committed, while simultaneously offering far greater support for collaboration and innovation. So how can organisations shift their whole culture to support and cultivate a growth mindset? Join Nigel Cassidy and this month's guests – Helen Deavin, Managing Director at Mathew Syed Consulting, and Isabel Duarte, Head of Leadership Development at Tucows – as we explore the science, benefits and pillars of nurturing a growth mindset in your organisation.

Each episode covers the technical ground on some aspect of the low-carbon transition – but it also delves into the nature of leadership in the climate transition: whether to be optimistic or pessimistic; how to communicate in order to inspire change; personal credos; and so on. Joseph “Yossi” Vardi is an Israeli entrepreneur and investor. He is one of Israel's first high-tech entrepreneurs and for over 50 years, he has founded and helped build over 100 high tech companies in various fields. In 1996, he became the founding investor of Mirabilis, the creators of ICQ which was the first instant messaging application that was released to the web; AOL eventually bought it for $400 million. Yossi has invested in or helped companies which have either gone public or has since been sold. These companies include Answers.com, Gteko, Airlink, Tivella, Scopus, Foxytunes, Tucows, and many more. In this episode… The secret to creating a software that succeeds and breaks records is simple: create a tremendous user experience and not just a product. According to the lifetime investor and founder of multiple software companies, Yossi Vardi, a software product is about satisfying people's curiosity for a new experience before solving their problems. And that's one of the three things that Yossi looks out for in a company that he might potentially invest in. Want to know what the other two are and how you can get to your first 100 million users? Listen to this episode of Inspired Insider as Dr. Jeremy Weisz talks with serial investor and entrepreneur, Yossi Vardi, about his journey as a long-standing investor in software companies. Yossi shares with Dr. Weisz the things that he learned could help bring a company to 100 million users, and he also reveals some big exits he missed investing in, the lessons he has learned along the way, and more. Stay tuned.

In this episode of PM Hub Podcast Series, I will talk about changing product roadmaps during covid_19; there is pandemic going around the world and lots of businesses on the shutting down, pivoting to help the community, etc. Having a customer-centric approach requires us to constantly assess our understanding of their needs to make sure we are building something useful. To help us better understand how to go about changing roadmaps, I had talk with Kim Phelan. Kim’s been in Product Management for the last 18 years. She’s lead products at a number of startups in Toronto including Achievers, Tucows, Clearfit, ChefHero and TouchBistro. Kim is currently Senior director of product management at Loblaw Digital working specifically on the Marketplace and Online Grocery products. Intro music by Peter Boros of The Nameless Citizens
The long awaited CRTC review into wireless services kicks off this week with virtually every key stakeholder – the big carriers, regional carriers, independent carriers, consumer groups, and many others – making their way to Gatineau to set out their vision for the future of wireless services in Canada. Elliot Noss, the CEO of Tucows, owns Ting, an MVNO that has carved out a niche in the U.S. market, but does not offer service in Canada as the big carriers won’t play ball. Elliot joins the podcast in advance of the CRTC hearing to discuss the state of Canadian wireless market, the role of MVNOs, and what he thinks needs to happen in Canada to make pricing more competitive.
Joey landed his first programming job in the '90s with a HyperCard (remember that?) resume and by going out for beer with the managers of the company where he wanted to work until they caved and hired him. Since then, he's worked at a San Francisco startup during the dot-com bubble, done tech evangelism for Tucows, Microsoft, and Shopify, valiantly tried to make Windows Phone happen, and once had a very short stint as an accordion-playing go-go dancer at a Toronto nightclub. He's currently a mobile developer at Lilypad. Joey lives, works, and engages in nincompoopery in Tampa, Florida, where he runs Tampa iOS Meetup (and helps out at the Android and Xamarin Meetups, too!), plays unlikely rock and pop tunes on his accordion, and generally does what he can to avoid becoming a "Florida Man" news story. From selling domain registrations to media buying & planning to building & managing advertising trading desks, Tessa Ohlendorf has quite the expansive resume. But if you look back at the early part of her life, you’d be hard pressed to find a direct path to the ad tech world. Born & raised in Toronto, Tessa’s early passions were rooted in photography and art. But it was philosophy that captured her mind and would become the cornerstone of her university education. After university, Tessa entered the world of internet marketing- holding positions Tucows & HostCompare. Tessa would eventually pack a suitcase for New York City and the life of a Madison Avenue media executive. While in New York, she held senior roles at CrossMedia and Convergence Point, all while starting her own agency— Online Media Management. The great recession of 2008 brought Tessa back home to Toronto where she went on to senior roles at Mindshare. She’s the founding employee of Cadreon’s Canadian office, and is now leading MightHive’s expansion into Canada.
Once again, due to the large volume of questions, we picked two stocks to look at: The first, Tucows Inc. (TC:TSX), and the the second, Atlas Engineered Products (AEP:TSX-V). Tucows provides network access, domain names, and other internet services. The stock has been a true under-the-radar story, jumping from the $9 range just over five years ago, to today closing in the $75 range. Is it a BUY, SELL, or HOLD? Atlas Engineered Products is a supplier of trusses and engineered wood products. Is it a BUY, SELL, or HOLD? Our star of the week is Enercare Inc. (ECI:TSX), a provider of essential home and commercial services and energy solutions. The stock jumped 53% this Wednesday from the $18.90 range to around $28.85 after it had been announced it would be acquired by Brookfield Infrastructure in a $4.3 billion transaction. Enercare has been a long time recommendation in our Canadian Income Stock research, originally recommended in $9 range.
In our 220th episode of The Cyberlaw Podcast, Stewart Baker, Maury Shenk, Gus Hurwitz (@GusHurwitz), and Megan Reiss (@MegReiss) discuss: GDPR disruptions: Some US sites just exclude Europeans; GDPR yields new Schrems lawsuits against Big Tech; But it may also boost the giants’ cloud business and close the door on adtech rivals; Wilbur Ross, having caved on GDPR, whines about it and asks for exactly the wrong kind of relief; ICANN sues Tucows for dropping PII collection – and loses, tout suite; And the ePrivacy Regulation is on deck. Kaspersky loses both its lawsuits in one blow. This week in government cybersecurity reports offering ineffectual responses to attacks the Iranians have already shown they will use: Iranians ready retaliation attack on US industrial controls; DOE/DHS offer soothing words about grid resilience in the face of cyberattack, but little real support for the emollient; Commerce and DHS release botnet response report – full of visions of the future without the guts to say how we will get there.

Under Elliot Noss, Tucows challenged how software was distributed in the 1990s and how domain names were offered and managed in the 2000s and is challenging how mobile phone service and fixed Internet are provided today. For nearly twenty years, Elliot has loved and championed the Internet as the greatest agent of positive change the world has ever seen. Through his role at Tucows, his involvement in ICANN and his personal efforts, he has lobbied, agitated and educated to promote this vision and protect an Open Internet around the world.
Noss explains the evolution of Tucows. Tucows (NADSAQ: TCX) started in the early 90s as a software download site, but is now one of the world’s largest domain name registrars and has a market cap of about $250 million. CEO Elliot Noss explains a common thread in Tucows’ transition from downloads to domains, and now […] Post link: Tucows CEO Elliot Noss – DNW Podcast #63 © DomainNameWire.com 2020.
