The comedian Taylor Tomlinson grew up in a religious household, so her very first stand-up performances were on the Christian comedy circuit. But after she got fired from a church gig because of a joke she told, she started branching out her comedy. Now, she's one of the biggest comics in the world, the host of “After Midnight” on CBS, and she's just released her latest comedy special, “Have it All.” Taylor joins Tom Power to talk about her early stand-up days and what it's like being the only woman currently working in late-night television.

Rudy Moreno is a well known figure in the comedy world, especially in Los Angeles where he got his start and where he still headlines and produces shows for major comedy clubs.  Rudy crosses over to all audiences with his line of humor. When introduced to O'Shea Jackson Sr., the American rapper from N.W.A known professionally as Ice Cube, Moreno called him “Ice Cream” -- and that in a nutshell is "Rude," as he's nicknamed on the comedy circuit.  He's a national headliner comedian and musician with Voodoo Sindicate. As an actor, he has appeared on Criminal Minds, Everybody Loves Raymond, The Shield, Arrested Development and many others. He has recorded several comedy shows, including his last, entitled "Double Date," which featured George Lopez. Rudy also gives back to his community by holding toy drives in his native Lincoln Heights in Los Angeles.

Kim Chakanetsa is in the heart of Los Angeles' comedy district to meet two stand-up comedians who recently opened their own venues. Jiaoying Summers is a stand-up comedian, a social media star and the owner of The Hollywood Comedy Club and the Pasadena Comedy Club. Originally from China, she moved to the US when she was 18. She studied theatre and drama, but after director John Singleton failed her at an audition and suggested she should try comedy instead, she gave stand-up a go. She says comedy saved her life and helped her through her post-partum depression and her divorce. Nthenya Ndunda is an actor and comedian who, in 2021, opened The Comedy Nook, a venue promoting the work of black artists. She was born in Kenya and grew up in Canada, and decided to open her business after her best friend passed away. Nthenya draws inspiration for her jokes from her personal experience as a black woman living in the US and as the mother of a one-year-old. This week on Yes But Why, I present to you my interview with improviser, Katy Schutte. Katy Schutte has performed and taught improvisation in 20+ countries across five continents. She is a Head Teacher and Curriculum Writer for Hoopla, the UK's biggest improv school. Katy authored The Improviser's Way: A Longform Workbook, published by Nick Hern Books. She is also a commercial and voiceover actor. Katy is a contributing writer for Cards Against Humanity as well as an actor/writer on the web series, Sideliners. She was resident songwriter on Sean and Robot's Comedy Circuit podcast; she was co-writer on the AR immersive game Beth's Legacy in association with StoryFutures and CreativeXR; and she was a writer/improv director/performer on The Galaxicle Implosions, a multi-platform live virtual reality show with Fandco and Flipside.Katy is currently working on a play based on her experience as an artist in residence with The Arctic Circle Project 2022 and is a recipient of the Peggy Ramsay Foundation Grant. In my conversation with Katy, she told me all the ways she has attempted to find nerdy friends. She had some really good ideas. Once a tiny child sitting in a chair up in a tree reading a book, Katy Schutte is now a successful and often sought-after improv teacher from the UK. Katy has made a name for herself in the international improv community with her online improv and writing workshops! I am currently taking a zoom workshop with her called, “The Mythic Improv Journey”!Katy has been a tour de force in the improv scene long before the pandemic. In an effort to bolster her own improv scene in Brighton, Katy studied improv in the US and then soaked up as much improv education as she could from all around her.We had a great conversation about the hard work that goes into developing and being part of an improv scene. We talked about how to handle conflict and how to make career decisions. Katy spoke on using your own values to navigate big decisions. She made it sound really easy. Katy is such an inspiration to me. She is a stalwart educator in the international improv community and the effort she puts in to all of her theatrical endeavors is just plain awesome. In my time taking class with her, Katy has created a safe space and taught us some really amazing things about myth! I've enjoyed every bit of my time spent with her and I am happy she is out there for all of you to hopefully experience as well. Support Katy Schutte by joining her newsletter – you'll then receive information from her about all the workshops she is teaching and any shows she is participating in! British Podcast Awards nominations

If you enjoy this podcast, consider buying me a coffee: https://adamstoner.com/support I was buoyed to see several Fun Kids podcasts nominated at the British Podcast Awards earlier this month. The Santa Daily, presented by Father Christmas in the countdown to December 25th is up in two categories: Best Daily, against the likes of Monocle 24's The Globalist, which has been waking me up every morning in lockdown, and even Today in Focus from The Guardian. Best Radio Podcast against Chris Moyles' Radio X and two picks from BBC Radio 4. I'm most proud of The Week Junior Show, the news podcast for children, fully punching its weight in the Best Current Affairs Podcast category with players like the Economist, LBC's James O'Brien from Global, and the Guardian. The results are to be announced in a livestream on July 11th. Gunning for next years' nominations, I'm still producing and editing Fun Kids' lockdown podcast, Stuck at Home. We also launched a brand new podcast, Sean and Robot's Comedy Circuit, which I did the artwork for, and re-launched an older channel with a newer concept, Story Quest. Here's what else I've been up to in May: My local, independent coffee shop re-opened ahead of schedule. It felt good to have a barista-prepared coffee for the first time in two months! The barbers better be next. Fresh bouquets from Bloom & Wild elevate any at-home office. These flowers come through letterboxes and last an impressive amount of time considering they've trundled around the postal system. I've been reading: If you read a lot, I've found a great Amazon alternative: Hive. Buy online, have your book delivered, and an independent bookshop of your choosing gets a percentage of your sale. I read hilarious Q&A between ‘You and Coronavirus' from the New York Times at the start of May. I've been digging into sneak-peaks from Love People, Use Things, a book from Joshua Fields Milburn and Ryan Nicodemus, publishing in 2021. Edward Snowden's autobiography, Permanent Record, about his life and the process behind the 2013 NSA revelations is as eye-opening as the information he blew the whistle on. The Hunger Games' prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, is pretty good. I was worried at first about its length and subject matter but like the original books, which were an allegory for the Iraq War, there's lessons to be learned in this one too. Common Sense For The 21st Century: Only Nonviolent Rebellion Can Now Stop Climate Breakdown And Social Collapse by Extinction Rebellion co-founder Roger Hallam is worth picking up and a lot of the lessons can be applied to other social crises too. Paul Jarvis, founder of privacy-friendly analytics group Fathom, has a good archive of email newsletters on his website covering an array of subjects including digital rights and creativity. His delivers weekly on a Sunday. I've been writing about: All of my blog posts – including this one! – are available as podcast episodes. Just search for my name, Adam Ayrton Stoner, in your podcast app of choice, or just tap here. On Tuesday, I wrote about how the problems we experienced pre-coronavirus will continue to exist after it. Climate change and social justice, but this post paid particular attention to the Black Lives Matter movement. On Wednesday 10th June, and written before the reigniting of the Black Lives Matter movement in the US, I put down some radical ideas for a future post-coronavirus. It mainly focuses on governance but the ideas are definitely geared towards creating more equal and just societies. Subscribe in your podcast app of choice to hear me read it when it's released. Earlier in the month, I wrote about how one might use blockchain technology to build uncensorable social media platforms. I don't have the technical know-how to do that but I have been working on ways to mirror tweets to the Ethereum chain; a bit like an immutable version of Politwoops, which tracks tweets politicians delete. I've been enjoying: As a longterm holder of the granddaddy of cryptocurrency, celebs like JK Rowling talking about it fills me with a sense of pride. I've been lax with the security around my crypto holdings for quite some time so purchased a Trezor hardware wallet to store Bitcoin and Ethereum. Battling with poor upload and download speeds, I purchased Little Snitch, a programme for your Mac that reveals all the connections other programmes on it are making and lets you block them at at will. If you use Adobe Creative Cloud, your jaw will hit the floor at just how many times your computer pings their servers. Weirdly, blocking those connections doesn't even affect the functionality of the programmes. That's all for now. Until next time. Your friend, Adam.

Mike Boyle grew up "down the hill" in West Orange, a suburban New Jersey neighborhood with an eclectic group of moderately dysfunctional families. As somewhat of a chubby kid he was frequently picked on by the guys at school.  But somehow Mike always had the charisma that helped the girls gravitate toward him. It was during the time he spent with his posse of girls that he discovered that they not only were drawn to his charming personality but they actually loved hanging out with him.  Mike found it quite easy to make everyone around him laugh. After three attempts at marriage and 21 years running his own successful business, he decided that he needed more from life than satisfying his insatiable appetite, charming women and making buckets of money. Mike started his entertainment career in earnest.  He uses a lot of personal angst to tell stories that many people can relate to. Weaving his way back and forth between being hard nosed and not hesitating to expose his vulnerabilities, he knew he had finally discovered his calling. He grew up idolizing Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Sam Kinison, and Andrew Dice Clay, among others.  He loves his audience, and always manages to engage them during his performance. Mike Boyle who is quickly becoming known on the Comedy Circuit, is still on his first United States Tour which included playing shows in... Jacksonville, Ocala, Miami, Florida The Murray Hill Comedy Club in New York City MOCA in New York City With shows in Chicago...Texas..Louisiana... Los Angeles California...
