In my time cruising around Substack, one of the more interesting personalities I've come across is a fellow named Wez, aka Obsidian Blackbird. who writes “Memories of a Post Grunge Drifter”, a sort of ongoing autobiographical project that winds its way across the end of Generation X and the turn of the new millennium through the eyes of a vagabond Kiwi. Along the way, Wez shows us how the adversity of his family situation was dealt with, or not, via running away from home and leading a life not unlike that lived by another friend and former guest of this show, A.M. Hickman. A journey that spans the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean while straddling cultural shifts of rural living in the British Empire's furthest flung outpost to the streets of early 2000s Sydney and Toronto, and onward into the weirdness of post Covid America, Wez's life has been lived with both hands firmly gripping the short and curlies. This interview is as entertaining as his writings, often accompanied by his own illustrations, which you ought to check out here -https://obsidianblackbird.substack.com/A brief selection of titles -The Cruise Ship as a Spiritual ExperienceOperation Finnish PrincessI Was a Gypsy Roadside Rug SalesmanEscaping From Bad Men that look out for Teen RunawaysSnow White and The Seven Starving BogansWez is nothing if not prolific; those five titles barely scratch the surface of his output - if you've got the time and inclination, there is so much more. And after all of that, he's going back to New Zealand to start a ‘Right Wing Hippie Commune'. Almost as if his story is just getting started at the ripe old age of 47.Thanks for listening, and remember to not pass judgement on the hitch-hikers.Questions, comments, suggestions, corrections and Hate Mail are welcomed and strongly encouraged - gordilocks@protonmail.com

Annie is back! She starts the show off by questioning if Joe Biden is a good person or not and how much that actually matters when he is the leader of our country. “IS IT POSSIBLE, THAT THERE ARE NO COINCIDENCES.“As the “family vs aliens" genre receives another entry in Jordan Peele's Nope, we at Retro Grade Podcast decided to talk about a similarly themed movie that recently celebrated it's 20th anniversary. We are talking about, M Night Shyamalan's Signs, starring Mel Gibson, Joaquin Phoenix, Rory Culkin and Abigail Breslin. We talk about how this movie left an impact on our childhoods, and it's unexpected relatability in a post-911, mid-COVID America of today. We talk about the scenes that scared us, the scenes that made us laugh, the scenes that made us want to cry, and how Shyamalan packs all of this into one emotional roller coaster of a movie, that still makes us feel all of the things. We gush about the strengths of the films cohesive structure and rant about how the current obsession over finding “plot holes“ is ruining our ability to enjoy movies. Seriously, stop trying to find plot holes. If you want to find them, you will find them in every single alien invasion movie, and perhaps any movie you want. Suspension of disbelief is something you need to have to appreciate storytelling, especially when it comes to movies. We talk about the writer-director's fall from grace, and whether or not he deserved the degree of criticism that he got. Shyamalan became known as the twist director, but how many of his films actually have twists? We talk about how widespread it became to ridicule Shyamalan and purposefully mispronounce his last name, and how he alone seemingly took the fall for the failure of the film adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender. During the late aughts we saw a lot of terrible adaptations of beloved franchises, but how many of them do we still hold a grudge against to the person that directed them? We discuss the different style of acting we see in this film. We don't see big emotional performances, but instead get these grounded characters in the quiet moments of an impending apocalypse. Performances that help make the film so incredibly personal and charming. Even Mel Gibson, despite his controversial statements, outbursts, wild conspiracy theories, questionable politics and hateful comments, makes us want to root for Graham Hess. The severity of the controversies is something we touch on in this episode. Some people should probably be in jail, or perhaps not be allowed to make films ever again, but how does Hollywood decide who gets a second chance? Music is from Triune Digital and audio clips pulled from movies we will be reviewing in other episodes.Artwork by @jannelle_o
Today, we're sharing the first episode of a new series from Futuro Media and PRX. We Imagine…Us is a powerfully crafted dual set of podcasts designed to inspire and elevate innovative ideas and solutions for some of the most pressing problems facing our communities as they confront decades of racial inequality. For the first time ever, Futuro Media is producing an original fiction podcast along with PRX, “We Imagine…Us: The Long Way Around,” starring Emmy-winner Karrueche Tran in her debut podcast performance. The compelling and audio-rich series takes us on a journey filled with twists and turns through the center of the country and explores themes of racial injustice, family and community healing and solidarity while telling the story of a father and daughter's journey to build a new life for themselves. This compelling audio drama holds up a mirror to the challenges of our contemporary world and was inspired by recent events and interviews with members of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation's Solidarity Council on Racial Equity (SCoRE) including John Legend, Ava DuVernay, Michelle Alexander, Heather McGhee and others. A companion factual podcast series, Re-Imagination Nation with Maria Hinojosa, features interviews with these thought-leaders about where we are and about how we can work together to create a more just and equitable world. In episode one of We Imagine…Us, after serving three years for a white-collar crime, Albert "Bumpy" Watkins is released into a post-Covid America, where he has to navigate his new status as a formerly incarcerated person and his new role as a single parent to teenager Mercy Watkins.
It was so interesting to revisit The Great Gatsby 100 years after the time it was set in. Was Fitzgerald's snapshot of America post Spanish flu jazz age that much different from post Covid America? Are rich couples still getting away with murder? Are lovesick people still doing things for the most bizarre of reasons? Are people still partying too much on Long Island? Yes and Yes and Yes. But it is a short and completely delicious read and Fitzgerald's ability to create so many vivid characters in so few pages is still so impressive and fun. I listened to the audio version read by Jake Gyllenhall and would highly recommend that. Shout outs to Decriminalize Nature petitioners out and about at Movement in Detroit all last weekend and thanks to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for having so much weed for the nearby states who don't. Thanks so so much to my guests-resident Gatsby obsessed expert Eleanor Hanley(first timer!), Moon Abbott(thanks for coming back!), and Paul Gordon(host of Diamond Dust-ups)for joining me!

Over the past ten years, the talk about a red America and a blue America had been growing. COVID-19 mandates and restrictions forced Americans to look at their locales and local governments and their own quality of life. This has prompted the greatest shift in blue and red cities to become more attractive to the local politics. So what does all of this meaning in a post-Covid America?

It tells the story of a Black American father and his Black Vietnamese American daughter who set out across the United States in hope of rebuilding their lives. Offering a clear-eyed look at real-world struggles many communities in our country face today, its core message is that through solidarity we can make change. [00:30] Killer SUVs (10 minutes)The Washington Post described Darrell Brooks's attack on paraders in Waukesha, Wisconsin, last week as a “tragedy caused by a SUV.” In this domestic terrorist attack, why won't the media report on the identity and motives of the man behind the wheel? As Victor Davis Hanson recently wrote, “[T]he media can turn from creation to suppression on a dime, given the common theme of ginning up racial strife and hatred.” [10:15] Biggest Public Policy Failure in History (15 minutes)Joe Biden said he would end the pandemic during his first 100 days in office. There have been 414,000 U.S. COVID-19 deaths in America so far this year. The virus has actually killed more people this year than it did in 2020—and hundreds of millions have been vaccinated this year. Between lockdowns, face masks, social distancing and now the triple dose of the vaccine, nothing is ending the pandemic. Meanwhile, the collateral damage inflicted by these draconian policies has caused more damage to our nations than the virus itself. [25:20] Vaccine Madness in Australia and Greece (10 minutes)There have been zero COVID-19 deaths in Australia's Northern Territory since the start of the pandemic. Still, state leader Michael Gunner says he will “never back down from supporting vaccines.” Gunner's lockdown in the Northern Territory prohibits the unvaccinated from leaving their homes even to buy food! In Greece, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis intends to fine those who refuse the jab $114 for each month they remain unvaccinated. “It is not a punishment,” Mitsotakis said. “I would say it is a health fee.” [35:40] Bible Study: True Biblical Manhood (18 minutes)True biblical manhood is a rarity in modern society. It's hard to find strong young men who pattern their lives after Jesus Christ, the perfect example of true manhood—men who seek to build their bodies and their minds to the glory of God. Yet this pursuit of biblical manhood is one of the noblest, most fulfilling and rewarding ventures a young man can embark upon!
After serving three years for a white-collar crime, Albert "Bumpy" Watkins is released into a post-Covid America, where he must navigate his new status as a formerly incarcerated person and his new role as a single parent to teenager Mercy Watkins. “The Long Way Around,” Futuro Media's first-ever audio fiction series, stars Emmy Award-winning actress Karrueche Tran and a diverse voice cast and was written by two-time Emmy and Peabody Award-winning novelist, screenwriter, and playwright Trey Ellis (The Tuskegee Airmen). “The Long Way Around,” is part of “We Imagine...Us”, a groundbreaking podcast and multimedia project that also includes “Re-Imagination Nation with Maria Hinojosa” a companion podcast series that delves into the issues raised in the fiction series with interviews from thought leaders, artists, and activists who are members of SCoRE (Solidarity Council on Racial Equity) including Michelle Alexander, Ava DuVernay, Saru Jayaraman, Heather McGhee, Linda Sarsour and others. We Imagine...Us is a production of Futuro Unidad Hinojosa a division of @Futuro Media.

This is Convo By Design with a conversation about aspirational change in design and architecture and ideas regarding the personal definition of success. We are going for a deep dive with an incredibly well qualified panel. Is it big, ultra-lux or perhaps there is something more? Social issues have caused a global refocus on what “home” means. Safety, security, comfort have become more often discussed topics than in years past. What defines aspirational architecture in a highly fractured, post-COVID America? This panel includes Paul McClean, Brian Pinkett, and Joe Dangaran. What is the value of architecture? How does one calculate the value where want intersects need? What is “need” now versus need in a year from now? I love this group of incredibly talented architects. The ideas espoused here are changing the nature of architecture and in the next 55 minutes, you will understand why. Please know this as well, the following conversation is absolutely packed with new idea and traditional ideas packaged in new ways. This topic was ideated and crafted for the sole purpose on making the participants, and you, think about architecture differently for the sole purpose of showcasing breakout ideas and planting the seeds for what's next. This is part of the Wellness & Design Thought Leadership Series presented by Thermasol. Defining what comes next is a challenge but it can be made far more predictable when experts check in and as I have said architects are futurists, these are the people making the projections become realities. Are you subscribing to the podcast, if not, please do so you get every episode automatically when they are published. You can find Convo By Design everywhere you find your favorite podcasts and now, you can find us on DesignNetwork dot Org, a destination dedicated to podcasts, all things design and architecture so make sure to check it out. Thank you, Joe, Paul and Brian. Thank you for your time, talent, vision and skill. It is always a joy speaking with you. Thank you Walker Zanger and ThermaSol for your partnership. And, thank you for listening and subscribing to the podcast. Keep those emails coming convo by design at Outlook dot com. Adding the word “pleasure” to our architectural aspirations will make life better for all who choose to embrace this idea. See if you can add this word to what you do every day and see what happens. I am looking forward to seeing you again in person at a design event near you very soon. Until then, be well and try to take today first.
On this week's episode, we've got a TON of all-star guest appearances, with Hanna the Stripper, Keith Richards, the Pillow Guy's biggest fan, and even the Devil himself! PLUS, there's a healthy dose of vax/antivax "wisdom" to talk about, lots of new music and life events, and of course, John Clay's one-of-a-kind, singular outlook on what it takes to run an ever-growing private business in (hopefully) post-COVID America. So mask up (or not!), and hang with the Wolfe Pack! We've got your first dose covered. This episode is dedicated to our dear departed friend and compatriot Matthew Nelson. Rest in peace, ol' buddy.

FRIENDS, Our second show back in the Green Mill was a baller birthday bash for a not-quite-but-maybe-almost post-COVID America. Despite the world literally burning, several of our old-school fave contributors still made a big splash, to everyone's delight. As we attempted to return ever-so-gradually to normalcy, the news gods blessed us with some true silliness—enjoy the tale of the man stopped by Belfast police who insisted the cocaine discovered between his buttcheeks must have been placed there by somewhere else—as well as challenging solemn occasions, like the passing of Donald Rumsfeld. In addition to freshly written current-events segments, swinging tunes by Chicago's great jazz singer Paul Marinaro, musical comedy by our own Bill Larkin, and standup comedy from visiting Houston-based funnyman Zahid Dewji round out an excellent audio magazine experience. In a few weeks this currently public podcast is going back to being an exclusive thank you, accessible only to our monthly donors. But we still wanted to thank you for sticking with us through so much by sharing it with everyone for a little while longer. For now feel free to alert a fellow Machete fan that this episode is available to all. Thanks, as ever, for the support that makes it happen. And dig this hot lineup: MASTHEAD Bill Larkin Zahid Dewji Atra Asdou and Gary Pascal Paul Marinaro Sorhab Forouzesh Mark Chrisler The Braided Janes

This week on the BOX... DJ has a lot to say about working in post-Covid America. He notes that companies are starting to charge more for everything as the world begins to step out of the woods, and while he understands that companies have a lot of ground to make up, the country still hasn't figured out that you can't keep raising prices on things if you refuse to raise wages that people can earn. And pricing people out of the ability to afford to live is stupid, shortsighted and not even remotely the only dumb thing that companies are doing. Our host shares a real-life story about his grandfather and how it was that employers and employees really excelled when both sides adhered to their social contract. But points out that neither side is holding up their end anymore and that's why everything always seems to suck at most day jobs. And he's worried that people are simply "not smart enough" to understand this stuff, and they really should be quite ashamed of themselves for that. Also the house lights are off at the BOX and DJ isn't entirely sure it's even Thursday. DJ talks a little about some REVEL 9 news, and a problem he's having trying to navigate things currently on the table in front of him. He truly doesn't know what to do and leans on the BOX chat (#teamuppity) for advice A Life of public service, being a hit in the amnesia community, potential deodorant stains and MORE! Today's Daily Download episode features an interview with HousingWire Lead Analyst, Logan Mohtashami. In this episode, Mohtashami provides an update on an article he wrote in April, which lists the five economic and/or social landmarks that we would need to pass that helps the industry better understand the recovery and how the housing market is performing.Mohtashami's article is part of our HW+ premium membership community. Use the code hwpluspodcast100 to get $100 off your annual membership. For some background on the story, here's a summary of the article: The fiscal calendar, a mainstay of marking economic activity has served little purpose in COVID America. Where it once provided a structure by which to analyze balance sheets and economic trends, in these virus-directed times, it has become a vestigial anomaly like the little toe or the appendix of the human body.In order to understand the economic performance of various sectors during these times, we need to abide by the dictates of the virus. For this reason, I divided 2020 into this economic-timeline into three phases: Before COVID (BC), After the onset of the Disease (AD), and America is Back (AB).In a previous article, I wrote about five economic and/or social landmarks that we would need to pass in order to determine that we had exited the AD phase and entered the AB recovery phase. This serves as a report card on that recovery with a final word about the U.S. housing market. The Daily Download examines the most compelling articles reported from the HousingWire newsroom. Each afternoon, we provide our listeners with a deeper look into the stories coming across our newsroom that are helping Move Markets Forward.
