Website: https://www.bizcatalyst360.com   Unsheltered - None of Us Are Home Until All of Us Are Home:  What's your first question or thought when encountering a homeless person? Do you wonder: Is it their choice to be on the street? Are they just lazy and don't want to work? Are they all mentally ill, alcoholics, or addicted to drugs? Are they dangerous? The list of questions and assumptions goes on and is shared by many. Many homeless people work but, without a permanent address or transportation, often have difficulty finding and keeping jobs. While some homeless people have mental health issues or substance abuse problems, most do not. Dangerous? Homeless people are more likely to be victims of crime than perpetrators. They are often targets of violence and theft, and they live in constant fear for their safety. It is important to remember that many homeless people are just like you and me but have fallen on hard times. They are human beings who deserve our compassion and understanding versus being harshly judged based on their circumstances or appearance. This Book had to be written! It's time for us to change the narrative, starting with changing the label. The word "homeless" is stigmatizing, immediately conjuring up the many misconceptions mentioned above. "Unsheltered" is more neutral and casts a much wider net beyond unhoused, including those whose primary nighttime residence is unsuitable for human habitation (for example, a city sidewalk, vehicle, abandoned building, or park). Before you ignore another homeless person on the street, remember? That could be someone's father or mother. They have a story - perhaps like the real ones you will discover here - each destined to change the narrative, one human being, one voice at a time. Time to take in a view. A panorama that changes with the wind and the tide. It's about six o'clock in the morning, and the Lento box has been recording through the night, tied to a windswept tree facing directly out towards Looe Island and the English channel.   The scene has an aural horizon formed of disapated ocean breakers, crashing against rocks far below. Blended layers of panoramic undulating natural white, grey and brown noise. Close by, newly sprouted leaves flutter around the microphone box in fast currents of blustery air. As the gusts subside, a softer, calmer view of the headland is revealed.  There's a fresh bracing feel to this place. Spring birds sing and call. Land birds such as chaffinches, wrens, robins, chiffchaffs and wood pigeons. Some sea birds too, herring gulls and possibly some oyster catchers. It's an exposed location. Unsheltered from the elements blowing in from the vast and empty sea. Unsheltered, and so thoroughly enlivening.

Unsheltered: Voices from the Street- Recognizing “Homelessness” is a condition often Misunderstood and Stigmatized  Dennis Pitocco: In my capacity as CEO of GoodWorks 360° and 360° Nation, and in partnership with Peggy Willms, Founder of All Things Wellness, we are now reaching out to media outlets worldwide to help us with a very special endeavor we have undertaken to amplify the voices of the homeless worldwide. Our endeavor (further defined below) is strictly a “for good” versus for-profit initiative. Any loss from this endeavor will be absorbed by us. Any potential surplus will be distributed to worthy nonprofits whose mission is focused on serving the homeless. From our perspective, the time is long overdue to give a voice to those unfortunate and often mischaracterized and misunderstood souls living on the street. It's time to dismantle the harmful, false narrative that homelessness is by choice. The most common misconception about people experiencing homelessness is that they want to live on the street. This myth enables apathy and maintains the status quo of too many people experiencing homelessness. We intend to change that narrative. Period. We plan to publish our Anthology Book: Unsheltered: Voices from the Street in early Spring next year – as a means of changing the narrative of such a complex and pressing issue affecting millions of people worldwide, starting by moving beyond the negative stigma and limitations attached to the word “homeless” by adopting “Unsheltered” – intended to include not only those unhoused, but those whose primary nighttime residence is a place not suitable for human habitation (for example, a city sidewalk, vehicle, abandoned building, or park). We recognize that “homelessness” is a condition that is often misunderstood and stigmatized and is often seen as a personal failing rather than a systemic problem. It's time for their stories to be told by the unsheltered and by those who can speak about and for them. Our Unsheltered Series will look upon the issue & challenges of homelessness worldwide, by capturing real stories from real people. Our Mission Our quest is to rally our collective talent and resources to materially amplify the voices and visibility of the unsheltered population while breaking down the stigma associated with homelessness. We listen, gather, and share their stories. We change the world by changing the narrative, one person, one story, one day at a time. Our Vision It's time to open our minds and our hearts by doing MORE and doing BETTER, as together, we educate, raise awareness of, and dismantle the misconceptions about the many misunderstood souls living on the street, empowering each of us individually, and collectively to create change for good. Our Approach We formally launched this endeavor several months ago, with a special article published on our award-winning Site (BizCatalyst 360°), including a call for submissions and our global Press Release. See below: SPECIAL ARTICLE: HOMELESSNESS: TIME TO DEBUNK THE MYTHS? PRESS RELEASE: Breakthrough Unsheltered Anthology Book Series Announced OUR LANDING PAGE: UNSHELTERED: VOICES FROM THE STREET Everyone associated with this endeavor will be donating their time, talent, and/or treasure. This includes our storytellers, our administrative team, and our marketing/publicity team. We're very excited to have captured the support of David Berenbaum, a distinguished affordable & fair housing advocate to author our Book Foreword, coupled with photography donated by Renato (Ron) Rampolla, a Tampa-based, world-class photographer. My personal commitment to “giving back” includes; service on the  Board of Navicore Solutions for circa 10 years  (serving 2 years as Chairman), and; service as former Chairman of the Board of Meals On Wheels of Tampa, having served on the Board for over a decade. Our Ask of You / Prospective Collaboration We will individually and together make ourselves available for interviews in any format to discuss the plight of the ‘unsheltered” while amplifying our need for real stories from real people who: are currently unsheltered/homeless have been unsheltered/homeless in the past have been affected indirectly/a degree removed from being unsheltered/homeless (family members, friends, co-workers, etc.) are familiar with the personal and global effects of” the unsheltered/homeless population are organizations and causes on the ground facing daily struggles with those who are unsheltered/homeless All of the above is intended to educate our readers, changing their preconceived notions of the homeless population. Dennis Pitocco believes that “enthusiasm opens the door, but vision grabs hearts and minds and pulls everyone to the other side.” He carries a vivid image in his head of what our future could be. The friction between “what is” and “what could be” burns him, stirs him up, and propels him forward. When our team is facing insurmountable challenges or the prospect of defeat, he radiates hope, confidence, and possibility. His unshakable optimism and overwhelming confidence in the 360° Nation vision is palpable, day in and day out. In all of his endeavors, Dennis champions integrity, connection, and radical positivity. Police evicted residents of a homeless encampment in south Minneapolis Thursday for the second time in a few days. The encampment was the fourth iteration of Camp Nenookaasi, which was shut down Tuesday by the City of Minneapolis due to “imminent public safety concerns.“A city hearing on the encampments Wednesday night ended in a shouting match, with council members divided over how to approach the encampments. The city's operations officer, Margaret Anderson Kelliher, reiterated the city's stated core values — that every unsheltered person deserves dignity and respectful treatment.“Every effort has to be made to connect people to housing, shelter, and services,” Kelliher said. “Encampments are a serious public health risk to safety, including and centering on people staying in the encampment itself. They are not a dignified form of shelter.”The city has offered shelter for the residents, but people in the camp say they would rather be at Camp Nenookaasi. Josh Leopold, a Senior Advisor on Health, Homelessness and Housing at the Minnesota Department of Health joined MPR News host Cathy Wurzer for more perspective.Editor's note: This story has been updated to correctly state the number of times Camp Nenookaasi has moved to a new location.Use the audio player above to listen to the full conversation. Subscribe to the Minnesota Now podcast on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.   We attempt to make transcripts for Minnesota Now available the next business day after a broadcast. Barbara Kingsolver says that she's “drawn to characters who don't feel they have a place at the table. They've heard too many conversations that begin: You poor backward soul, living in the middle of nowhere.” It's that impulse that animates her 2022 episodic novel “Demon Copperhead,” which won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction this year. It's the story of Demon, an orphan in Appalachia who's beset by crushing poverty and neglect but whose hardships are structural, introduced to his community by the mining and pain pill industries and made worse by urban prejudice and disdain. We talk to Kingsolver about how she brought “Demon Copperhead” to life and the power of art – both her protagonist's and her own – to give voice and change minds. Guests: Barbara Kingsolver, author, "Demon Copperhead," which won the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for fiction. Her other books include "Unsheltered," "The Poisonwood Bible," and "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle."

When Barbara Kingsolver set out to write her latest novel, “Demon Copperhead,” she was already considered one of the most accomplished writers of our time. She had won awards including the Women's Prize for Fiction and a National Humanities Medal, and had a track record of best-selling books, including “The Poisonwood Bible” and “Unsheltered.” But she felt there was one giant stone left unturned: to write “the great Appalachian novel.”Kingsolver grew up in rural Kentucky and lives in southwestern Virginia. Appalachia is her home. So when national coverage of her region started increasing in the years since 2016, with a focus on the region's problems — like deep rural poverty and the opioid epidemic — she felt something was missing. She wanted to write a novel about Appalachia from the inside, as someone who is a part of it and who grew up in it. “The story I wanted to tell was not about the big guys, but about the little people,” she told me.And if major awards are any indication, Kingsolver succeeded. “Demon Copperhead” won the 2023 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and has been widely acclaimed for the nuanced portrait it paints of life in rural America. So I asked Kingsolver to talk about her background and the book, and to explore the often chasmic dissonance between how many of us city-dwellers think about Appalachia and the reality of living there.Mentioned:Shiloh and Other Stories by Bobbie Ann MasonBook Recommendations:Landings by Arwen DonahueRaising Lazarus by Beth MacyPod by Laline PaullThoughts?
