“Harness builds software for teams that build software,” says Scott Sanchez, CMO of Harness. Scott and his team recognize that software developers at larger companies spend an increasing amount of time doing everything but coding. Harness provides a series of end to end products which ensure that that coding is high quality and delivered quickly and securely. He explains the importance of positioning and individuating in an industry in which an increasing number of people are selling a similar product. A large part of setting your business apart is providing thoughtful, valuable content.  Scott explains what such content looks like across all aspects of the business, some of which might be surprising. He particularly focuses on organic social content, what this looks like and why many marketers get it wrong. Letting the audience see the human face of your company is a great way to connect, he explains. This is good news for those just starting out who can't afford to pay for glossy marketing productions. It is also the best way to engage with software developers who are inherently marketing averse and skeptical of anything too polished. Scott also considers the difference between sales and marketing, and how models like ChatGPT will affect his and other industries. He warns against the short-term thinking that many marketers (often inevitably) fall into. Learn why he declares Justin Welsh and Daniel Vassallo are two entrepreneurs to watch. Quotes: “Marketing's job, if done well, is to not be marketing. We are trying to help our customers get from point A to point B, whatever that is for them. And the more you can express that in terms of outcomes and value, the better job you're doing.” (3:36-3:56 | Scott) “A year from now, 18 months from now, what do you want your ideal customer to say this company, this product is the best in the world at?” (16:18-16:29 | Scott)  “I think authentic, valuable content, not marketing content, the way a lot of people would think about it, but truly authentic and valuable content is worth 100x its weight.” (27:35-27:48 | Scott)  “I do think too many marketers, not by choice…are forced into short term thinking…I think you get into that hamster wheel of catch up, on on goals. And you end up making poor choices as a result of not having options.” (40:40-41:29 | Scott) Connect with Brendan Dell: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brendandell/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/BrendanDell Instagram: @thebrendandell TikTok: @brendandell39 Buy a copy of Brendan's Book, The 12 Immutable Laws of High-Impact Messaging: https://www.indiebound.org/book/9780578210926    Connect with Scott Sanchez: LinkedIn: @scottsanchez Twitter:@scottsanchez Facebook:@scottsanchez Instagram:@scottsanchez TikTok: @:scottsanchez Harness.io Please don't forget to rate, comment, and subscribe to Billion Dollar Tech on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts! It's not really like harder or easier for any one of them. I think the product is kind of the crux there. I love the example of Daniel Vassallo on Twitter. He's a really good thinker. And creator and maker. He shares openly. He is like all his revenue from the products that he creates. The vast majority of his income comes from info products ebooks and courses and things like that. And then he does some consulting for Gumroad and like I think actually one of his first projects. But the tiniest amount of revenue, I think only does like $1,000 a month is his sass called Userbase.I think one because it's just inherently harder to find product-market fit with software you can kind of like get lucky and strike gold and like build something that's like very new and needed and just people are clamoring for most of the time. You kind of has to like feel your way around and make a couple of changes and pivots and get up to feature parity in order to start competing with an incumbent or start being attractive for people to you.Brian:It's true. It's so hard because it literally has to be solving a problem that people are ready to buy and get their problem solved. Whereas with a course, I found that like, yes, it really, really benefits a lot of people who buy it and watch every lesson and implement it and use it to grow their business. And that's great. But then there's always other a lot of other buyers, you know, they don't necessarily go through it all. They don't necessarily implement it all, but it's sort of exploratory. Like they'll buy they'll make the purchase just to go down that rabbit hole for a little bit to see what it's like. And maybe they'll learn like, you know what, that's not for me. And in that case, it's still sort of they still got value out of learning that path is not for me. Right.Clip 2Corey:The tension there is that -  what am I working on today? Am I working on a product or am I working on marketing? And I have to do both. You know, and it usually involves. But like I'm either answering emails that are marketing-related or I'm in between GitHub issues. Yeah. And it's I mean, one of the.Brian:One of the best pieces of advice I've seen a lot of actors give to each other is to do a week on week off for a product or marketing is to spend one weekCorey:on the product. When I come to like whatever they are you're moving half as fast. That's true. You are moving definitely half as fast. I do a lot of that too, but it's never that clean. It's never like you know, literally Monday to Friday product time and then next Monday to Friday, it's marketing time. I mean, it's never that clean, you know, because opportunities are going to come into your inbox at any time. And that's when I have to just like flip into marketing mode and go do this podcast, you know.

It was hard to understand, time-consuming to use, and worse, it exploited visitor data for big tech to profit. I've spent countless hours in Google Analytics dashboards trying to figure even out the most basic metrics. This is exactly why I signed up for Fathom as soon as I heard Paul Jarvis and Jack Ellis were building it.Fathom is simple website analytics that doesn't suck. It's easy to use and respectful of privacy laws, with no cookies following your users around the web. They're also a bootstrapped, sustainable business so I love supporting them. Yes, it might feel strange paying for analytics at first, but once you realise the real cost of free Google Analytics and realising how easy to use Fathom is, you won't go back. Daniel Vassallo used to work for Amazon. By every measuring standard, he should have been happy & content. He was successful, making a high salary, getting promotions, working with great coworkers - all while working for one of the biggest companies in the world. However, over time, Daniel's motivation to work there decreased, and after a lot of internal deliberations, he decided to quit his high 6 figure job at Amazon to pursue the unknown. He didn't want to live on someone else's terms so he decided to take his independence into his own hands. What happened next was completely unexpected... Daniel and I discussed: Why he left his cushy Amazon job Crossing $400K in sales on Gumroad (from 3 info products) in 1.5 yrs. What his plan (or lack of one) was when he left Amazon The info product space Why he chose Gumroad as his preferred platform Why you don't need to be an "expert" to sell info products The importance of transparency The democratization of content on the internet How he drives traffic to his courses And much more... Daniel Vassallo My take: I love risk-takers - I love when a person decides to bet on themselves, and lead the life they desire to live. Not every risk pays off - sometimes things don't work out - but there's really only one way to find out, and that's through action. The internet offers everyone a fair chance to pursue their passion or their ideas - and make a living from it. Support The Podcast

AWS has over 150 different services. Databases, log management, edge computing, and lots of others. Instead of being overwhelmed by all of these products, an engineering team can simplify their workflow by focusing on a small subset of AWS services–the defaults.Daniel Vassalo is the author of The Good Parts of AWS. An excerpt from the book: “The cost of acquiring new information is high and the consequence of deviating from a default choice is low, so sticking with the default will likely be the optimal choice. A default choice is any option that gives you very high confidence that it will work.” Having confidence in your workflow–even if it is a simple workflow–has advantages.S3, EC2, Elastic Load Balancers: for simple web applications, this is really all you need to build your business. Daniel Vassallo worked at AWS for more than 8 years before leaving to become an entrepreneur and author. He joins the show to talk about what the good parts of AWS are, and his strategy for building applications with that subset of services.
