Stemning. Det er det det handler om ... ALLTID!

Karen Odden returns to talk about how we can make our secondary and side characters memorable to readers. Secondary characters help give our stories shape and our often the characters who readers fall in love with. Think Ron and Hermione from Harry Potter. Han Solo from Star Wars. They add depth and color. And if writers don't keep their side characters in check, they can try to take over.
Landing an agent to advocate for your work is no mean feat. In Episode 15 of The Write Approach, Karen Odden tells us the research and effort she put into finding the right literary agent for her Victorian-era historical novels. We talk about the benefits of writing to a niche market and the significant role the research plays in her writing (and the joy she derives from that research). Finally, we talk about how about Karen's academic career has dovetailed with the novels she writes. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/autismpodden/message
Today I talked to Karen Odden about her new book Under a Veiled Moon (Crooked Lane Books, 2022). When the Princess Alice pleasure boat collides with a huge iron-hulled cargo ship on the Thames River, it's split in half, and only 130 of the 650 passengers and crew members survive. It's 1878, and clues point to sabotage by the Irish Republican Brotherhood, which has already used violence in hopes of restoring Home Rule. Inspector Michael Corravan, who was born in Ireland, orphaned, and raised in London by an Irish family, knows that the British will never allow Home Rule in Ireland if the IRB is to blame for the disaster. Meanwhile, violence is rising in his old neighborhood, and Colin Doyle, the youngest of his adopted family, has joined one of the violent Irish gangs. He refuses Corravan's offer of help, which puts the entire family in danger. With support from colleagues, his good friends Mr. Gordon Stiles and Mrs. Belinda Gale, Inspector Corravan presses on to uncover the truth. KAREN ODDEN received her Ph.D. in English literature from New York University, writing her dissertation on Victorian railway disasters and the origins of PTSD. She has taught at UW-Milwaukee, written essays for numerous books and journals, and edited for the journal Victorian Literature and Culture (Cambridge UP). She freely admits she might be more at home in Victorian London than today, especially when she tries to do anything complicated on her iPhone. All of her mysteries are set in 1870s London. Her first novel, A LADY IN THE SMOKE, about a young woman in a 1874 railway crash, was a USA Today bestseller. In A DANGEROUS DUET, Nell Hallam, an ambitious young pianist stumbles on a notorious crime ring while playing in a Soho music hall. In A TRACE OF DECEIT, Annabel Rowe, a young painter at the Slade School of Art, must delve below the glitter of the art and auction world to uncover the truth about her brother's murder. A member of Mystery Writers of America and Sisters in Crime, Karen was awarded a 2021 Grant from Arizona Commission on the Arts. Under a Veiled Moon is the second novel in her Inspector Corravan series, following Down a Dark River. Down a Dark River - Inspector Corravan #1 by Karen OddenLondon, 1878. One April morning, a small boat bearing a young woman's corpse floats down the murky waters of the Thames. When the victim is identified as Rose Albert, daughter of a prominent judge, the Scotland Yard director gives the case to Michael Corravan, one of the only Senior Inspectors remaining after a corruption scandal the previous autumn left the division in ruins. Reluctantly, Corravan abandons his ongoing case, a search for the missing wife of a shipping magnate, handing it over to his young colleague, Mr. Stiles. An Irish former bare-knuckles boxer and dockworker from London's seedy East End, Corravan has good street sense and an inspector's knack for digging up clues. But he's confounded when, a week later, a second woman is found dead in a rowboat, and then a third. The dead women seem to have no connection whatsoever. Meanwhile, Mr. Stiles makes an alarming discovery: the shipping magnate's missing wife, Mrs. Beckford, may not have fled her house because she was insane, as her husband claims, and Mr. Beckford may not be the successful man of business that he appears to be.Slowly, it becomes clear that the river murders and the case of Mrs. Beckford may be linked through some terrible act of injustice in the past—for which someone has vowed a brutal vengeance. Now, with the newspapers once again trumpeting the Yard's failures, Corravan must dredge up the truth—before London devolves into a state of panic and before the killer claims another innocent victim.Karen received her Ph.D. in English literature from New York University and subsequently taught at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Her first novel, A Lady in the Smoke, was a USA Today bestseller and A Dangerous Duet and A Trace of Deceit have won awards for historical mystery and historical fiction. Her fourth mystery, Down a Dark River, is available in hardcover, e-book, and audio book. The sequel, Under a Veiled Moon, will be available in November 2022.

This week I turned to 5 of my previous 204 guests, who all share a very specific theme in common: health and fitness. There’s guest #1 on CoronaTV, Sharon Jaffe (also my sister), who owns a spinning studio in London, Iron Man and Peloton machine, Peter Shankman, Spartan Warrior, Justin Levy, Ultra Virtual Marathoner, David Rendall and the Norse Titan, Lee Odden. Each of my 5 guests will introduce the topic of their choice (which may or may not be about health, fitness or wellness) and then collectively, we’ll discuss over egg-timed 5 minutes. I don’t know the topics in advance; nor do I necessarily want to know them. Plus I’ll show you the best of the week that was in the form of my 1-minute CoronaByte highlights. This week you’ll hear from Karen Freberg, Michael Farmer, George Tannenbaum and David Burkus. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

S****y Idea Time: a celebration of bold business experiments
Since he was a child John Odden has been fascinated with improving his health, fitness and athleticism. He was a tall, skinny, awkward kid growing up who always lacked confidence, especially in the gym. So after begging his parents to get some home equipment for some time, he got his first set of plastic-covered cement weights from Target at age 12. He's since gone on to become #1 World Ranked in the Scottish Highland Games and is a kettlebell Beast Tamer and all around strongman. He's the owner of Empowered Strength and Sanctuary of Strength in Bend OR. In this episode we talk about how being a generalist can serve your business and how lifting heavy things can make you a better entrepreneur.
On today’s episode of Vital Metabolic, hosts James Wheeler and John Parker speak with John Odden from Kettlebell Gains Apparel. They discuss John’s experience competing in the Highland Games, setting multiple world records. John shares information about how he trains, what he tracks (or doesn’t), the importance of understanding your body, and more. Episode Highlights: 8:30 – John lives in Bend, Oregon, with a lot of blue collar folks who he considers “industrial athletes” with physically demanding jobs. 10:20 – John did some winter training prep work for all the outdoor sports in Oregon, and he does a little bit of everything and treats it as time to play rather than treating all activity as formal training. 13:48 – There’s a stigma around lifting weights, but in outdoor sports, building muscle is like building armor that helps to buffer you from breaking a bone in a fall. 16:29 – John asks people to commit to him for just 90 days to try lifting to see the results and how it transforms their experience of their favorite outdoor sports. 19:20 – They recommend a book called What Doesn’t Kill Us by Scott Carney, which talks about the Wim Hof method. 19:53 – Overcoming physical objects like lifting stones creates a lot of resilience. 20:36 – John has been participating in the Highland Games since 2004 and is a world record holder. 21:00 – What inspired John to participate in the Highland Games and what is his training like? 24:42 – As John grew in the sport, he broke through the misconceptions that you had to look a certain way to be able to throw certain numbers. 26:26 – There are different stones used in the event, some about 22-30lbs, open stones weighing about 16-20lbs, two weight throws at 28lbs and 56lbs, and hammer throws at 22lbs and 15lbs, and the weight over bar event. 28:35 – John formerly held the record for the standing shot over bar, and then one of his students broke it. 28:55 – There are weight classes within the sport. 29:51 – The last two events are the sheith toss (a larger medicine ball in burlap thrown with a pitchfork) and the caber toss (a massive telephone pole-like object). 32:16 – Watch the Highland Games documentary episode called Home Game on Netflix. 33:12 – John has not tracked his body fat or food in years. 38:25 – The Dinnie Stones was featured in a documentary about old-time strongmen, and these stones weigh a combined 734lbs. 39:50 – They have ring handles to lift, and today the challenge is less about whether you can lift them at all, but how long you can hold them. 42:18 – John is particularly proud of how he trained for the Dinnie Stones, including getting ring handles to simulate the lift. 44:14 – John feels like he’s made for the battlefield more than the gym, and likes that he looks more athletic than like a giant bodybuilder. 46:25 – It’s important to understand what your physiology, genetics, and natural proclivities are. 47:42 – It can be a challenge to find a balance between maintaining your fitness and deadlift weight while also pushing yourself, without hurting yourself as you age. 48:55 – Successful coaches will still often have their own coaches to tell them whether they should do more or do less. 50:12 – What is “strong enough”? It depends. 51:00 – John has owned his own facility for about 5 years but has been coaching for 20 years. 51:51 – To get started, you need a mentor to learn from someone who knows more about training than you. 53:01 – One of John’s mentors has set the goal to fail three times this week. 53:25 – John called around to about 15 different facilities and asked them what was working for them and what wasn’t before he decided to open his own. 3 Key Points: Understanding your body is more important than looking a certain way or fulfilling certain stereotypes about lifting. People’s bodies are built to excel at different movements, exercises, and skills. Working with a trainer can help you avoid training yourself into injury and pain. Tweetable Quotes: “So many times, we’re often stuck in our limitations.” –John Parker “I would break down. I thought I was way too small, all those things… I just kept going with it. I just kept building my momentum in the sport and realized that I can break past that, what that looks like to throw xyz distance in any event.” –John Odden “I’m so mindful and I’ve been such a big follower of precision nutrition principles for a long time, and I’ve tracked it for so long that I just know when I’m in the range that I need to be in.” –John Odden “I’m not gonna suffer for my sport. If I didn’t feel as good or better than ever right now, going into competition, I just wouldn’t be doing it anymore.” –John Odden “If you are training yourself into the ground, you will eventually be in the ground.” “Coaches make the best students.” “You gotta fail. You gotta fail forward fast.” –John Odden Resources Mentioned: James: Facebook Instagram Twitter John: Facebook Instagram Twitter Email: questions@vitalmetabolic.com Sponsor: Kettlebell Gains Apparel Sponsor: Great Lakes Giriya Sponsor: Vivo Barefoot What Doesn’t Kill Us by Scott Carney Home Game on Netflix The Dinnie Stones John Odden Instagram Empowered Strength training Instagram www.Empoweredstrength.com Sanctuary of Strength Instagram

Lee Odden Show Notes Lee Odden is a digital marketing strategist, author, international speaker and CEO of TopRank Marketing. His work integrating search, social, content, and influencer market-ing has been recognized by the Wall Street Journal, The Economist and Forbes. By combining a “best answer marketing strategy” together with “do well by doing good” values, he’s attracted top industry talent and clients including SAP, 3M, Dell, LinkedIn, Oracle and GE Digital. Odden is a prolific writer as the author of the book Optimize and as editor of TopRankBlog.com where he has published over 1 million words on digital marketing topics. Most passionate about It’s funny; I didn’t start out to create an agency necessarily. It’s my passion for marketing and the chase of solving difficult problems is really what got me into the role I have now. Obviously, I’ve had to learn to be a CEO, but technology plays a role in all of that. You can’t be efficient, or effective, especially these days, without being aware of and mastering the tools. There is an expression I use, ‘A tool is only as effective as the expertise of the person using it.’ I think there are a lot of tools that solve 50 problems, but a lot of people only have 5 of those problems. That’s part of the decision making process, especially with an organization that is trying to allocate funds for it’s technology and reconciling that against their needs, the capabilities of their staff, and that sort of thing. On an individual basis, or a small business basis, it’s a lot easier. Lee’s best advice about approaching customers Obviously, you’ve got to know your customer. I think a lot of entrepreneurs are focused on the product or solution they have to offer and their own reasons for starting the company; their passion behind the technology, their passion behind the solution that they have invested so much into, and sometimes they don’t express that same passion for investigating or empathizing with why their customer would want to buy that product or service. I think really knowing and understanding your customers is the most key thing you can do; you need to understand, it’s an ongoing activity, it’s not just something you do when you start the company and write a business plan. The other thing is, and this is from my own experiences, it’s possible to create the kind of momentum, to create a kind of gravity, if you will, so your customers come to you instead of you relying on chasing them. In our agency, we don’t rely on salespeople. We’ve not relied on advertising at all. Biggest failure with a customer A client engaged us for branding and awareness level campaign and said, ‘this is not about lead gen, this isn’t about conversions, this is just about increasing market affinity about our brand and our solution. All we’re trying to do is increase the amount of conversation about the main topic and our brand, that’s all we want.’ Okay, great! So, we built a program, we have an agreement, we have a project plan, all lined up towards that objective and we execute. Then a quarter into the engagement, the client says, ‘my upstream executive is really worried since we haven’t dramatically increased the number of leads.’ Of course, there weren’t even landing pages or conversation pages involved in the campaign! So, we scrambled to create a demand gen program with leads. That was a bit of a disaster and expectations were not managed properly and we had to swallow a jagged pill. We ate a lot of cost. But that was a lesson learned. It’s a matter of defining scope and setting expectations upfront for how we will deal with requests that fall outside of that scope. There are always special circumstances that will arise. It’s inevitable. So, we treat that as normal, not as an exception. So, when those requests outside of scope come up, we can decide if this is something we can exchange for another deliverable or is this

A sought after public speaker, Odden has keynoted numerous digital marketing industry conferences and has given nearly 200 presentations in 13 different countries over the past 10 years. Episode Highlights The trouble with strategy. I'm a huge fan of Lee's book Optimize. The first part focuses on developing a marketing strategy. While most marketers acknowledge the importance of strategy, few devote appropriate time and resources. "Strategy is like the Loch Ness Monster of Marketing. There are sightings but it's hard to find!" Where to start with strategy? With Q4 on the horizon and a strategy deficit, many may be wondering where to start for the new year ahead. "Start by getting some clarity around your organizational goals and your customer needs. Then you can think about how to develop marketing that solves your business problems." How do you know when influencer marketing is a good fit? Lee is also an expert on the topic of influencer marketing. Like strategy, many like the idea of influencer marketing but few know where to begin. "Start with 'why.' Why does it make sense to partner and co-create content? Especially if it's for free?" With the right influencer relations in place, you can find the right people to help you create content that is the "best answer" for your community. What's next in marketing? Lee pointed to Scott Brinker's infographic featuring over 3,800 martech solutions! (Below.) In short, marketers today are overwhelmed but help could be getting closer as Lee points to increases in participatory marketing. "Participation makes marketing more scalable — more efficient and effective." What brand has made Lee smile recently? While in Cleveland, Lee had an amazing Uber experience riding in a BMW 7 series. "It was like getting in a spaceship. That made me smile!" To learn more, go to the Top Rank Marketing website. You can also connect with him on Twitter and LinkedIn. As We Wrap … Before we go, I want to flip the microphone around to our community … This week Lee and I will both be speaking at the Social Media Rockstar Event in Willmar, Minnesota. The week we get all serious, digging into the facts, non-facts and numbers around the consultation report for the re-introduction of Eurasian Lynx to the U.K. A species absent for 1300 years there are a number of potential benefits and of course consequences to the re-introduction of an apex predator. We explore every angle, in what has to be one of the most in depth interviews of the consultation process to date. In the studio we have Dr Paul O'Donoghue from Lynx Trust and Pete Myles from the British Wool Marketing Board.
