"Elder Isolation" Family Life's "Inside Out" News Feature Nearly a quarter of adults 65 and older are socially isolated. In today's Inside Out podcast, author and speaker Jen Pollock Michel talks about some of the causes of elder isolation, and encourages Christians to help prevent elderly friends and loved ones from feeling alone.    Martha talks with Jen Pollock Michel about elder isolation Nearly a quarter of adults 65 and older are socially isolated, according to the Centers for Disease Control. And social isolation, studies show, increases the risk of hospitalization and a host of serious health conditions, including dementia and depression. “I think there are a lot of reasons why older people get isolated, and one thing I've really grown to appreciate is just how devastating it is,” says author and speaker Jen Pollock Michel, whose family moved to live closer to her aging mother. Michel points to a number of reasons elderly people can grow isolated. Michel's mother, for instance, became more isolated when her husband's Parkinson's Disease made it difficult for the couple to leave their apartment. Others find that the inability to drive isolates them, especially when there's no accessible public transportation to fill in the gap. People can also withdraw socially when hearing or memory loss make it hard to participate in conversation. “All of these capacities that enable us to get out of our house, or maybe invite people into our homes--when those diminish, isolation follows” Michel says. Michel offers encouragement to those who care for and regularly visit the elderly people in their lives.  “It is good work,” she says. “And I think if you know it's good, you know it's valuable, and most importantly, you know it's God-honoring, then that provides the motivation that you need to keep doing it when it's hard. And you have to lay hold of that.”  And it can be hard. So Michel suggests that caregivers ask for help. “Getting a network of support, I think, is one thing that I would say, because you can't do everything all alone,” she says. “I allow myself to just be very human in the task. Depending on God as much as I can. You know, abiding in Christ—the foundation of the Christian life.” God is the stamina giver and also the model. When we spend time with someone who has been isolated, we are imitating Jesus.  “God clothed Himself with flesh and took up the loving act of presence,” she reminds us. “That's where we discover God's heart for us and live out of His love for other people.” Learn more about Jen Pollock Michel at JenPollockMichel.com.   "Inside Out" --- and all of Family Life's podcasts and features are available --- to download, share or subscribe. Today we are going to be talking about “Productivity in the Perspective of God's Timing.” Time management today is a hot topic. We are all so busy trying to fit everything we can into our day, that time management has actually become a big industry. There are countless books, podcasts, and other resources that tell us how to get more done in less time which can sometimes cause us even more anxiety. But what if we view the idea of efficiency through God's perspective? Would we get the same answers to the dilemma of managing a fast-paced life with a mile-long to-do list? Do you derive your value and identity from productivity? Do you try to live beyond your limits? Do you try to live a super-human life rather than a human life that is Spirit-filled?Most of us are constantly asking how we can get more done in the 24 hours a day we each have. We read books, go to workshops, and download apps to help us manage our to-do lists and be as productive as possible. But if we're honest, I think we also suspect we're missing the point. Something is off. We work hard and run fast through our day, but we're usually exhausted and unsatisfied when we come to the end of it. This conversation with Jen Pollock Michel is so helpful in trying to understand work, productivity, and our limitations as humans. Jen Pollock Michel and I talk about: * How time management originated in factories with stop watches and how keeping time mechanically is altogether inhuman.* Whether or not productivity and time management are even for our good.* How women are often required to manage both shifts—the one at work and the one at home.* What God's time is like—he is from everlasting to everlasting, so how does he measure productivity?* How the posture of time management is really just about control.* How God is the maker and giver of time. As humans we must receive time in whatever ways God deems is for our good.* How to confront our own frenetic energy and our idolatrous urgency to produce.* Considering a practice of gratitude and receiving the limitations in our lives.* The idea of a Rule of Life—developing routines and habits and practices that will help us to love God and neighbor.Jen Pollock Michel: https://www.jenpollockmichel.com/In Good Time, by Jen Pollock Michell: https://us.10ofthose.com/product/9781540900548/in-good-time-paperbackA Habit called Faith by Jen Pollock Michel: https://us.10ofthose.com/product/9781540900531/a-habit-called-faith-paperback/?affiliate=jenoshmanThe Common Rule: Habits of Purpose for an Age of Distraction by Justin Whitmel Earley: https://us.10ofthose.com/product/9780830845606/the-common-rule-paperback?affiliate=jenoshman

Reading "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."  - Matthew 5:8 “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” - 2 Corinthians 12:9 “For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.” - Romans 8:13  “32 And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets— 33 who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, 34 quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, were made strong out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight.” - Hebrews 11:32-34 “At 4:1 the ‘open door' will provide John with privileged access to the heavenly throne-room, and with it to heavenly mysteries otherwise hidden from him. The same privileged access is offered to the faithful Philadelphians, and indeed all who heed the words of this message, enabling them to see their own difficult situation from God's perspective, and thus make sense of it. When one is privileged to glimpse through the opened door, what originally appeared to be a defeat is transformed into a glorious vision of victory.” - Ian Boxall “Will play the role of the heathen and acknowledge that the church is the Israel of God.”  - William Mounce “Some commentator have affirmed that the way in which Christ will protect believers from the coming tribulation of 3:10 is by physically “rapturing” then from earth into heaven. This is primarily argued on the basis that this best accords with the most logical and literal force of (“keep from”). However, Gundry has shown the improbability of this understanding by demonstrating parallels between Rev. 3:10 and John 17:15, which is the only other NT occurrence of (“keep” with “from”: there Christ prays, “I ask not that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one.” Thus Jesus denies a physical removal from tribulation and affirms a spiritual protection from the devil. In Prov. 7:5 and Jas 1:27 has the same idea of protection from evil for those living in the midst of evil.” - G.K. Beale “...Small, mostly overlooked things, over a long  period of time with Jesus."  - Zach Eswine Question: Where are we truly drawing our strength from? “What blazes up on Golgotha is God's embrace of contradiction: weakness as power, foolishness as wisdom.” - Jen Pollock Michel

Episode Summary: Have you ever imagined a life without hurry, relentless work, multitasking, or scarcity? In a world that tells us to do more, accomplish more, and be more, what is that doing to us and is that consistent with what God says?  Time management is an industry that capitalizes on time anxiety. We are told that we must be more productive, and we buy countless books and listen to innumerable podcasts—all telling us how to do just that. But time anxiety is not solved by doing more and doing it faster. We must recover a Christian vision of time and take up habits that allow us to inhabit the time God has given us. Join me with Jen Pollock Michel as we talk about Time Anxiety: How you can overcome it to reimagine productivity.   Quotables from the episode: I tried to “crack” the code of pandemic time anxiety. That's when I realized I had much more to learn about time-faith. Time anxiety is related to time scarcity, death, and mortality. But the time we have is never long enough. Productivity tells us how fast we get things done but not why we do things for. Peace comes when we are rightly oriented to God. God has enough time! Time pressure is usually self-imposed. Time management focuses on the self but often ignores our community or God. Living life well is a slow and steady process. The ideal isn't productivity but fruitfulness in the character of God. We can gain “more time” by reducing and eliminating distraction. You cannot manage your time but you can manage your attention. Remove the word “productive” from your self-assessment! Time is never a constraint for God. Scripture References: Psalm 90:12 “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Matthew 6:27 “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” James 4:13-15 “Now listen, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.' Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, ‘If it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that.'”   Recommended Resources: New Year Online Hope Prevails Bible Study In Good Time: 8 Habits for Reimagining Productivity, Resisting Hurry, and Practicing Peace by Jen Pollock Michel  Trusting God Through Cancer 1 Trusting God Through Cancer 2 Revive & Thrive Women's Conference Subdue Stress and Anxiety: Fifteen Experts Offer Comprehensive Tools in Ten Minutes a Day. So good but often so hard to live, am I right, friends?!  She reminds us of the importance of living not in our timing or the timing of others but in having the courage to live in God's timing for our lives.  So much wisdom is found in what Jen discovered while writing her most recent book titled, In Good Time: 8 Habits for Reimagining Productivity, Resisting Hurry, and Practicing Peace…. I promise you don't want to miss out on this eye-opening conversation! Jen Pollock Michele's legacy is about faith and the object of her faith; to stay close enough to Jesus— connected as a matter of habit—so that she knows His voice and obeys what she hears. Michele writes on faith in all her books and articles and the one we talk about today, A Habit of Faith--40 Days in the Bible to Find and Follow Jesus—is written for skeptics, seekers as well as old-timers like myself. She's offering a copy as a giveaway all week-long, so be sure to leave a comment to be entered by Sunday night. It's a Bible-reading experience for the convinced and the curious, in other words, everybody will benefit. I LOVED THIS BOOK! And, see where you can begin this habit journey on her website: A 5-Day Jumpstart to Your Habit Called Faith. About Jen in her own words: I've loved stories since childhood: the intrigue of my dad's boyhood adventures with his dog, Chief; the friendship of books when I was—yet again—the new kid in town. I followed stories into university, then graduate school where I studied literature. After I became a mom, I passed years with my children, crowded around picture books and reading good stories. As a Christian, it's always been the stories of Scripture that have interested me most. In the Bible, we come to discover that the events of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection are the climax of God's story. Though many turn to the Bible exclusively for instructions about what to believe and how to behave, I've come to think that it offers us something even more expansive and beautiful and imaginative. Jen the author of four books: A Habit Called Faith, Surprised by Paradox (winner of Christianity Today's 2020 Award of Merit for Beautiful Orthodoxy), Keeping Place, and Teach Us to Want (winner of Christianity Today's 2015 Book of the Year). She's currently living in Ohio with her husband and their five children. Some gems to contemplate while you figure out if today you'll begin your 40 days of reading, listening, talking to the God who is in pursuit of you: If sin has to do with habits of autonomy, faith has to do with habits of dependence. When meeting with God, have a plan so you don't need to "start again" each time you meet. At God's initiative, he has made his home in us, and invites us to make our home in and with him.  Jen's new book releases Decemeber in time for Christmas! But you can pre-order now: In Good Time: 8 Habits for Reimagining Productivity, Resisting Hurry, and Practicing Peace Whether we're trying to find time, save it, manage it, or make the most of it, one word defines our relationship with the clock: anxiety. Yet is productivity really the only grid for the good life? Have you ever imagined a life without hurry, relentless work, multitasking, or scarcity? A life that is characterized instead by presence, attention, rest, rootedness, fruitfulness, and generosity? This is the kind of life we are meant for, says Jen Pollock Michel. But if we want to experience freedom from time anxiety, we have to reimagine our relationship with time itself. In the pages of In Good Time, she invites you to disentangle your priorities from our modern assumptions and instead ground them in God's time. Then she shows you how to establish 8 life-giving habits that will release you from the false religion of productivity so you can develop a grounded, healthy, life-giving relationship with the clock.     _____   When asked, "What's the greatest commandment?" Jesus replied simply: "Love God, love your neighbor." I imagine He was thinking,"It's not rocket science" or "What's not to like?" or  "It's not complicated." He was right, it's not complicated. I make it complicated. I need to pray daily to uncomplicate what He says is best for me and best for others. So I wrote 31 Days of Uncomplicated Prayers, and once I pray them through, I start over again.  You can too. Sign up HERE to receive 31 Days of Uncomplicated Prayers to take the "complicated" out of the simple commands of Jesus. Love God. Love your neighbor. It's not complicated.

Usually, faith doesn't feel like fireworks or a mountaintop moment. Most of the time, faith is—as our guest, writer Jen Pollock Michel says—as ordinary as lacing up your running shoes. Jen shares why thinking of your spiritual walk as a daily habit instead of a to-do list removes so much pressure, and why cultivating relationships brings more reward than a checkmark ever could.   Quotes “Faith is as ordinary as just lacing up your shoes. And there can be years that you lace up your shoes and you're not even sure what race you're running. But some days you do put your feet down and you're like, ‘Nope, I know what this is all about.'” —Jen Pollock Michel  “I think it's encouraging for the believer to think about faith as a habit.”  —Jen Pollock Michel  “It's so often confused that faith is always a mountaintop experience, that somehow you must be doing it wrong if you don't feel it. Faith itself is a habit. It has to be nurtured by regular, consistent, daily efforts and practices. And it's okay if you don't always feel like doing it. It's okay if you don't always see its immediate benefit or reward.” —Jen Pollock Michel  “God asks us to be faithful to our work, and work means deadlines and responsibilities. But I think we can do those in a spirit of trust, not a spirit of hurry, and certainly not a spirit of worry.” —Jen Pollock Michel   Jen Pollock Michel's LinksJen Pollock Michel's website Jen Pollock Michel's Facebook Jen Pollock Michel's Twitter Jen Pollock Michel's Instagram   Resources Mentioned in This EpisodeIn Good Time by Jen Pollock Michel   Connect with Sally Lloyd-JonesJesus Storybook Bible Facebook Jesus Storybook Bible Instagram  Sally's website Sally's Facebook Sally's Instagram   *Episode produced by Four Eyes Media*

Jen Pollock Michel, writer and Mere Fidelity listener, sent in an important and challenging question by email: There are several passages in the Bible that deal with scenarios of sexual violence. What is the best way to preach these texts, without traumatizing or triggering the congregation? We decided to not only address this question on the show but bring her directly on as a guest to talk about it. Full show notes at www.merefidelity.com.
