I'm your host, Brett Gilliland. Today I've got Karen Phelps Moyer with me. Karen, how you doing? Karen Phelps Moyer: I'm great, Brett. Thanks for having me on. Brett Gilliland: It's, uh, good to be with you and, uh, you know, by the looks, people can probably see up there. You got the Notre Dame football, you got the Notre Dame helmet and you're setting where. Karen Phelps Moyer: I'm in my home in South Bend. It does look like I'm a big fan, but I, I have a house here that I, I visit, um, My parents, and then I rent this house out, uh, during the season. Brett Gilliland: Yes. Karen Phelps Moyer: So I just happen to be right now, uh, working on a few things in, in my new business, so. Brett Gilliland: Yes, I love it. Which we will talk about soon. You are the, uh, founder and CEO of Golden Minds and Good Morning Gorgeous. And the founder of Eluna Network, the foundation that you're involved in, do amazing work and so excited to spend time talking about all those, but. If you can, um, Karen, let's just kinda start with what I do on every podcast of what's made you, the woman you are today. I know that's a pretty bold and, or not bold, but kind of an open question, right? That could go a million different directions. But really what's made you, the woman you are today to, to wake up and be involved in some amazing companies in the work and the impact that you're making in the world? Karen Phelps Moyer: Well, I grew up here in South Bend. I, the family came here when I was five years old, so I was influenced by an incredible university. Uh, For the character and personality that we develop in, in, in those youthful years. So I could walk to campus and be around some really great people. Learned to give back at a very young age. Um, was very determined in my career. I was gonna do television and, uh, married a professional baseball player at a very young age. And then supported his journey for about the next 30 years. Along the way, did some philanthropy and created our own foundation. And so therein lies, you know, my work and what I do, uh, to this day. Brett Gilliland: Awesome. And, uh, your dad is, uh, is a legendary basketball coach there at the University of Notre Dame. Uh, Digger Phelps. He's a hell of a guy. And how's Digger doing? Karen Phelps Moyer: He's well, thank you. Uh, he is active in his own way. He's definitely slowed down in the sense of what's on his agenda and in his calendar. He is been doing some world traveling, uh, since Covids been over and he, um, is healthy and that's always... Brett Gilliland: Yeah. That's good. That's awesome. That's awesome. So what did you learn in that role? Obviously in, in the environment you grew up in, you, you grew up around sports, you grew up around competition, uh, grit, uh, you know, all the stuff you gotta do, right? I mean, to coach at that level and the success he had, obviously I would think that would sprinkle down to kids. And, and so what did you learn watching that from the front row? Karen Phelps Moyer: Well, there was always a giving back component, and so whatever your blessings are to be able to pay that forward, to support others in the community with different organizations. Both of my parents were always demonstrating that,

University of Miami head men's basketball coach Jim Larrañaga announced Thursday the hiring of Preston Greene as the program's new strength & conditioning coach. Greene possesses 27 years of experience, including working with men's basketball programs at Power Five institutions for the last 14. He most recently spent 11 seasons at the University of Florida. “First and foremost, I want to thank Jim Larrañaga for the opportunity to come work at such a prestigious institution with a top-notch basketball program,” Greene said. “I'm grateful to him for his confidence in my abilities and I'm so excited to be here at the University of Miami. I look forward to working with our players to help get them in the best possible shape to perform at the absolute highest level. My goal is to put them in prime position to succeed every single time they take the court and will do everything in my power to make that happen.” From August 2011 until his hire at Miami, Greene served as the director of strength and conditioning at Florida, primarily working with men's basketball, while overseeing the men's golf and men's tennis strength efforts. The first five years came under the direction of two-time NCAA champion head coach Billy Donovan. Over Greene's 11 years in Gainesville, Fla., the Gators went 249-127, averaging over 22 wins per season. Florida made the NCAA Tournament seven times, winning at least one game in each appearance and advancing to four Elite Eights in a six-year span. That stretch included a spot in the 2014 Final Four during a tremendous 36-3 (18-0 SEC) campaign. Greene aided the Gators to the SEC regular season crown in 2013 and 2014, as well as the SEC Tournament trophy in 2014. He coached multiple future NBA players including Bradley Beal, a three-time All-Star, and Dorian Finney-Smith. Greene also heavily advised the design efforts of Florida's 2015 basketball weight room renovation. Before going to Florida, Greene worked as the head basketball strength & conditioning coach at Clemson University for two years. Serving under a different coach each season, Greene aided the Tigers to a pair of 20-win campaigns, a 43-23 overall record and two NCAA Tournament bids. “Preston Greene is one of the most well-regarded individuals in the strength & conditioning industry. His resume, quite simply, speaks for itself,” Larrañaga said. “Preston is an expert in his craft with decades of experience working with high-level collegiate basketball players, leading them to myriad successes. He is also already familiar with both the state of Florida and the ACC from his past stops. We're thrilled to have Preston join our program and know he will have a significant impact on our players.” In 2008-09, Greene was the head men's basketball performance coach at Stanford University. The Cardinal went 20-14 and reached the CBI semifinals in Johnny Dawkins' first year at the helm. Greene got his start in men's basketball during a five-year stint, 2003-08, at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he also aided the men's golf team. During his time in the Queen City, the 49ers logged four postseason berths, three 20-win seasons, two NCAA Tournament trips, one Conference USA regular season title and an overall record of 95-60. In January 2001, Greene got his first full-time job at the University of Arizona, where he worked for two-and-a-half years as an assistant strength, speed and conditioning coach. Primarily responsible for women's basketball and women's soccer, Greene also aided with football, as well as directed the department's nutrition and supplementation program. Greene got his master's degree in applied kinesiology and sports management from the University of Minnesota, where he worked as a graduate assistant in 1999-2000, assisting with the Gophers' football and men's hockey programs. A 1999 graduate of Clemson with a degree in health science, Greene served as student and graduate assistant coach with the Tigers. He spent time there with the football, men's golf, women's soccer, men's tennis and women's volleyball programs. Greene has contributed to multiple publications, including Digger Phelps' third edition of “Basketball for Dummies” and Stanford's “The Effects of Sleep Extension on the Athletic Performance of Collegiate Basketball Players” study. In addition, his first-year work with the Gators was featured on the cover of Bigger, Faster, Stronger magazine, while his 2019 efforts were profiled on ESPN's “Gymratts” show. A native of Peachtree City, Ga., Greene holds numerous certifications, including from the National Strength & Conditioning Association and the National Association of Sports Medicine. A co-founder of the Eleiko Strength Summit, he is also certified in AED/CPR, brain performance, facial abrasion technique, flexibility specialization and neuromuscular facilitated stretching. After many months, we kickstart the OFD Bookcast to finally finish "Notre Dame's Greatest Coaches" by Stephen Singular and Moose Krause. Seeing as how there has been a giant stretch of time between the last Bookcast episode and this one, a couple of things to keep in mind: Maybe go back and listen to the 6 previous installments if this is new to you. My dog (Bo Bowower) made things a little difficult at times. It's been almost as lo since I did a solo recording, and there are a few pauses to get my ducks in a row. So now that we have that out of the way, here's some of the things discussed from Chapters 15 and 16: Moose was comically giddy to see practice after a loss. Joe Moore was talked about quite a bit - but not nearly enough. A brief clapback at Joseph Campbell's "The Power of Myth" and Singular's usage of it in this book. The end of Ara. The physical toll of coaching the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. How Ara just forced Johnny Ray to coach in South Bend. A Frank Leahy impression just for Brendan's sweet ears. Ara's obsession with detail. Messing with Digger Phelps. Dave Casper just wanted Ara to leave him alone. And plenty more weaved in and out of the show... and Bo trying to bust out of the office. On the October 10th, 2020 edition of Notre Dame Federal Credit Union's Irish Sports Saturdays, host Angelo Di Carlo chats with Father Joe Carey, CSC, in our Focus on Faith interview. Fr. Joe has loved Notre Dame his entire life. It's the only college he applied to. He is now 80-years-old and is a 1962 graduate of Notre Dame. He was ordained a Holy Cross Priest in 1969 and has spent nearly his entire life on campus. His family history dates back even further with his dad being a 1932 Notre Dame graduate. Fr. Joe tells a great story of his dad's interactions with Knute Rockne. Plus, Fr. Joe has seen so much himself from Montana's rise in 77 to Catholics vs Convicts in 1988. And what a unique role Fr. Joe played with the Catholics vs Convicts T-Shirts. He also has some great stories about Digger Phelps. Fr. Joe remains active on campus as chaplain for the Alliance of Catholic Eduation (ACE) and chaplain for the women's lacrosse team. The name Drazen Petrovic might not be familiar to many of today’s NBA fans. But for those who recall the early 1990s and the sudden rise of the then New Jersey Nets, Drazen Petrovic is a name that brings up memories of a sharpshooting guard, a star on the rise, and man whose life was tragically cut short in a head-on collision along the famed autobahn. Petrovic, born in Croatia, had a passion for basketball matched by few. Every waking second, every chance he had, he was practicing the game. Gym rat? That was Drazen Petrovic. And he didn’t just practice shooting. He practiced and drilled virtually every aspect of the game as often as possible from the time he was a young schoolboy. Drazen had a goal, he wanted to play in the NBA. And he worked hard. He played for his local Sibenik, Croatia team. He also played for Cibona and Rea Madrid. He olayed on the international stage. He caught the eye of Notre Dame’s Digger Phelps. He caught the eye of the Portland Trailblazers too and they made him a 3rd round selection in the 1986 NBA Draft. After legal battles, jumping through hurdles, and gaining his release from Real Madrid, Drazen finally made it to the NBA. At first, though it was quite disappointing. Drazen saw little playing time as the Blazers were a title contender. In fact, in Drazen’s first year, Portland made it to the NBA Finals against the Bad Boy Detroit Pistons. Drazen’s second year was even more disappointing as he slid further down the bench and he demanded a trade. Portland obliged and sent Drazen to the Nets. Drazen adapted to the Nets style of play, worked hard and ultimately became the team’s leader. Drazen had an electric personality and knew how to get a rise out of the crowd, could shoot the ball from virtually anywhere on the court, and gained the respects of his fellow players and coaches. He led the Nets to the playoffs. But that’s when tragedy struck. Author Todd Spehr, who wrote the book, “The Mozart of Basketball; The Remarkable Life and Legacy of Drazen Petrovic,” joins the podcast from Australia to talk about the man voted by his fellow players as the greatest European Basketball Player in history.
