This annual wrap-up celebrates the biggest songs in dance and club music across all genres, showcasing the tracks that defined the dance floor in 2024. Among the highlights, the newest trend to capture the scene—Afro House—has sparked discussion. However, let's set the record straight: Afro House is neither new nor always true to its roots. While one standout track in this year's lineup genuinely fits the genre, much of what is labeled Afro House has been stripped of its African origins, replaced with slowed-down beats (120 BPM) and polished for mainstream appeal. This critique isn't about quality—many of these tracks are excellent—but longtime House aficionados will recognize the percussive elements as familiar territory. Like Nu Disco before it, Afro House is having its moment. Yet with so many producers relying on the same loops and software, the genre risks burnout before it can truly solidify. Credit is due to Rivo, whose rework of Disclosure's “You and Me” ignited the trend earlier this year. This stellar remix skyrocketed to become one of the biggest electronic tracks of 2024. John Summit: A Living Legend John Summit continued his meteoric rise this year with the much-hyped “Shiver.” The track showcases his ability to explore new genres while maintaining his signature dark, ethereal, and moody style. At this point, Summit is reaching Avicii-level stardom, but his continued output of bangers suggests he's handling the pressure with grace. Here's hoping he finds the balance between delivering hits and taking time for himself. PAWSA: From Underground to Mainstream One of the year's most unexpected breakthroughs was the massive success of PAWSA. Though the London-based DJ has been active since 2014, 2024 was his breakout year. With “Too Cool to Be Careless” and “That Phone Track” dominating the Beatport Top 100 for months, PAWSA's stripped-down House style became a dancefloor staple. Closing the year with a rework of Adventures of Stevie V's 1990 classic “Dirty Cash,” he solidified his position at the forefront of modern House music. Viral Revival: Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Mason vs. Princess Superstar Two early-2000s tracks found new life in 2024 thanks to their inclusion in the streaming hit Saltburn. Sophie Ellis-Bextor's “Murder on the Dance Floor” and Mason vs. Princess Superstar's “Perfect (Exceeder)” went viral on TikTok, sparking interest from a new generation of fans. Ellis-Bextor's 2001 hit and the 2007 mashup both surged in popularity, proving the timelessness of their dance-floor appeal. Pop Meets Dance: Sabrina Carpenter's Moment

When gunmen ambushed a Mexican-Chinese businessman outside his Guatemala City casino in 2016, few outside the DEA paid much attention. But the shootout presaged the downfall of a man who, feds would later say, hadn't just made a tidy living out of money laundering, but pioneered it. But Xizhi Li, who grew up in the border town of Mexicali, was just one of a new army of Chinese money launderers who, tooled with millennia of underground banking skills, and China's own economic policies, have become the go-to guys for Latin American cartels looking to wash their dirty cash. And with fentanyl flooding America's streets, their work is becoming deadlier by the day. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We kick off the week with some hardgroove techno from Izotope boss man JON10 as a free download. The Limerick based DJ & producer leans on hip-house style vocals as he intertwines them with shuffling drum grooves and and funk driven brass samples. Jon10 is best known for his work with Limerick-based party Izotope, a key cog in the emergence of 90's inspired techno parties in Limerick. The young DJ, producer and promoter has established himself as an interdisciplinary artist who is not afraid to venture beyond the cliche of advertising and operating a label. This desire has earned him the distinction as one of the driving factors behind the post-pandemic resurgence of rave culture in the southwest of Ireland. Jon10's groove-infused style of mixing and producing has caught the attention of many, which has landed him slots at renowned clubs and festivals across Ireland and Berlin, sharing the stage with some of the best artists within the realms of groove laced techno. The young producers music has been popping up on labels across Europe including Deadline records, Sonic Intel, Aktivv Berlin, and most recently, his debut EP Groove Assassination on his own imprint Izotope. His music has gained him a fierce reputation and the respect of many such as TRYM, Anetha, VTSS, Cravo, D.Dan and KI/KI. ‘Dirty Cash' see's the Limerick based producer lean on catchy vocals similar to those of the hip-house movement in the USA in the late 80's and early 90's which has been given a new lease of life within the techno sphere as of late. Shuffling 90's inspired hardgroove loops play off rolling bass & fluttering funk samples. This is a jerking groove for the early hours of the morning. "Dirty Cash" was sung by Melody Washington,[1] composed/played by Mick Walsh, produced by Stevie Vincent and released on the Mercury Record Label. "Dirty Cash" was first released in 1989 on Mercury Record Label, then again in 1990 both on 7" vinyl, where it went to number one on the US dance chart. Dirty Cash was then re-released as a remastered '97 remix in 1997. In June 2014, "Dirty Cash" was once again remixed, this time by Alan Fitzpatrick. Billboard wrote about the song: "Huge U.K. track is finally unleashed stateside sporting some new mixes. Seductive house track with an underground sensibility sports a tasty vocal hook and top of the chart potential." The Gavin Report wrote about the song: "British-based writer/producer Stevie Vincent spent six weeks Top Ten in the U.K. with this track, selling a quarter million copies in the process—no easy task in that market. Vocalist Melody Washington, a music teacher from Georgia living in England and teaching for the U.S. Air Force, met Stevie while she was playing in a local club near his home. A fortunate meeting for them and for us, who get to ride the rhythm of this exceptional entry." Network 40 wrote: "Almost a mood piece, "Dirty Cash" has a soulful vocal approach backed by a Euro-dance production somewhat reminiscent of the Pet Shop Boys."
You’ve probably heard of money laundering, but how does it actually work? How did billions of dollars of dirty gold from South America become clean cash in Florida and Ohio? How do crooks launder money using video games? Why are journalists getting killed for exposing money laundering? And what in the world is “cuckoo smurfing”? ---- Power Corrupts is written and narrated by Brian Klaas. The executive producer and sound editor is George McDonagh.
