In this episode of Persistence U, Maggie Parr joins us to explore the often overlooked topic of self-harm in adulthood. A celebrated artist and longtime Disney Imagineer, Maggie shares her deeply personal journey from childhood trauma and relapse in midlife to recovery through art, therapy, and self-love. Maggie's message is clear: healing is possible at any age, and creativity can be a vital tool on that path. News: We are still almost a year away from the Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend 2026, but there are some new details that were released this week. The weekend will take place during the 70th anniversary celebration “Celebrate Happy” and will be called the “Celebrate Happy” Half Marathon Weekend. The dates are January 29th through February 1st, 2026. The 5k “Celebrate Joy” race will take place on January 30th, the 10k “Celebrate Imagination” race will take place January 31st, and the “Celebrate Togetherness” half-marathon will round out the weekend on February 1st. Racers who complete the 10k and half-marathon will get the “Celebrate Achievement” medal. Finally, there is the “Celebrate Laughter” race on January 31st for kids 9 and under. “Celebrate Smiles” will feature yoga in front of Sleeping Beauty Castle on January 29th. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2025/04/12/new-details-just-announced-for-2026-disneyland-half-marathon-weekend/ https://www.rundisney.com/events/disneyland/ The next Disneyland After Dark Nite tickets are about to go on sale! Pride Nite – in our opinion one of the best after hours events – tickets will go on sale April 16th for Magic Key Holders, and April 17th for general admission. This year, Pride Nite itself takes place on June 16th and 18th. – https://mickeyblog.com/2025/04/10/disneyland-after-dark-pride-nite-tickets-go-on-sale-soon/ Weeklyteers who aren't a fan of a headband style create your own headwear now have an alternative! Guests can now create their own HAT instead! The hat is black with the D resort logo on the front, also in black. All the existing plushes that you can add to the headbands can be added to the hat as well. The hat itself is $14.99 and can be purchased at the Mad Hatter on Main Street, or at World of Disney in Downtown Disney. – https://mickeyblog.com/2025/04/13/get-a-new-create-your-own-hat-at-the-disneyland-resort/ One of our favorite Imagineers will be featured in an upcoming documentary about their life and legacy. “Bob Gurr: Living by Design” will premiere at the Alex Theatre in Glendale on April 26th to a red carpet arrival with celebrity guests, and a Q&A after with Bob himself! Doors open at 5:30pm and the film begins at 7pm. The event is scheduled to last 2 hours and 40 minutes, including the intermission and Q&A. Visit the link in the show notes to get tickets! – https://www.micechat.com/413124-bob-gurr-disney-legend-movie-premiere/ A small thing at Disneyland that we have been following is the sign at the Jolly Holiday on Main Street. When the location reopened recently from its refurbishment, there was a temporary sign covering the popcorn lights underneath. The temporary sign has been removed, and the decorative elements have returned, but the popcorn lights are still problematic. – https://www.micechat.com/413111-disneyland-news-crowds-construction-bob-gurr-star-wars-nite/ For the past 66 years, the Ernest S Marsh locomotive has taken guests around Walt Disney's Magic Kingdom. What you may not know is that it is much older than that! For 100 years the locomotive has been in operation and Disneyland has commemorated this with green 100 year celebration flags on the front of the locomotive. – https://www.micechat.com/413111-disneyland-news-crowds-construction-bob-gurr-star-wars-nite/ There are some small things happening around the resort that we wanted to mention. “it's a small world's” return has been delayed until May 9th. A new permit for Porto's includes the removal of two of the ticket booths in the esplanade to make room for the expanded location. Also, there was some testing on Lightning Lane removal from Pirates this week. Send us a textWhat happens when Disney Imagineers lose their minds completely? We explore this hilarious premise while enjoying a dangerously delicious Jungle Bird cocktail from Skipper Canteen. This rum and pineapple concoction ($15.50) proves to be the perfect companion as we dive into creating the most absurd, impractical, and downright terrible Disney park additions imaginable. Our comedic journey takes us through attractions like Hannah Montana's Wrecking Ball ride, where guests swing on actual wrecking balls to the infamous song, and a Walk-Through Flea Farm at Animal Kingdom with real fleas and the potential for itchy souvenirs. We design the ultimate anti-attraction with our Waiting in Line Adventure – a three-hour queue that ultimately leads to a closed ride, perfectly capturing every Disney fan's worst nightmare. From the boring political debates of our Jedi Council Ride to Goofy's How-To Do Laundry experience (where guests actually wash cast member uniforms), our terrible ideas span every Disney park. We imagine the perfect waste of time with Test Track Traffic Stop, where the ride moves just ten feet before stopping in traffic for ten minutes, and a Parent Trap Mega Ferris Wheel featuring arguing parents who reconcile as "Let's Get Together" blares at painful volumes. The absurdity continues with unconventional shopping experiences like Duke Wessleton's Toupee and Uniform Ye Olde Shoppe and a Lost and Found Emporium selling items abandoned by previous guests. We even propose a Yemen Pavilion at EPCOT and a Therapy Carousel of Progress showcasing dysfunctional family therapy throughout the decades.Whether you're a Disney fan looking for a good laugh or someone who enjoys creative satire of theme park experiences, this episode offers a thoroughly entertaining journey through attractions that would make even the most desperate parent flee the parks. Which of our terrible ideas would you avoid at all costs? Here's who we are and what is in store for you

He was an Imagineer over a forty-year span, from 1980 to 2023. In those years, Bob worked at every Disney Park and resort around the world. He was president of Walt Disney Imagineering from 2016 to 2022, and a Disney Global Imagineering Ambassador after that. His passion for storytelling and creative collaboration, new technologies, and for the vibrancy of the guest experience has driven him through projects from Tokyo Disneyland (and later its accompanying park, Tokyo DisneySea) and Disney Hollywood Studios to the reinvention of Disney California Adventure and on to Shanghai Disneyland. Weis also led the creative development of the new Triton class of cruise ships, the first of which was the critically acclaimed Disney Wish. Outside of Disney, Weis has served as a consultant to the Kennedy Space Center, Smithsonian, New York City's Rockefeller Center, U. S. Navy, and Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry. I don't claim to speak for anyone but myself, and maybe it's a generational thing, but America, to my way of thinking, is less of a place and more of a belief system; a way of looking at the world and the people in it.Americans believe in opportunity and equality.Americans believe, “Treat others as you would like others to treat you.”Americans believe in defending the weak from the strong who would abuse them.Americans believe in lifting people up, dusting them off, giving them a big smile and telling them to try again.Americans don't scare easily, and we don't leave anyone behind.Shortly after the Mayflower arrived at Plymouth Rock in 1620, men and women from every corner of the world began meeting here, mingling here, and producing mixed-race children here. We've been doing it for 400 years. This place has gathered people from every nation that has ever flown a flag. Some of these people came voluntarily. Others were brought here against their will. But none of that matters because children do not get to choose their parents.Americans are not purebred showdogs. We are mixed-breed puppies born in a howling wilderness.Alexander Hamilton was born out of wedlock on the island of Nevis in the Caribbean, but he came to this country and became one of its Founding Fathers. We have printed that man's face on 27 billion ten-dollar bills and the Broadway play about his life was a stunning success. That play, by the way, was written by an American whose DNA is Puerto Rican, Mexican, English, and African. His parents named him “Lin-Manuel” after a poem about the Vietnam War.Is America portable? I believe it is. America is kindness and generosity. If you believe in opportunity and equality, defending the weak, lifting people up, dusting them off, smiling and telling them to try again, you are an American. If you don't scare easily and don't leave anyone behind, you are an American. If you believe in love with its sleeves rolled up, you are an American.Take America with you wherever you go.Be an American today, okay?Roy H. WilliamsPS – Do you live outside the U.S.? Not one of the virtues I mentioned today is exclusive to America. Most people-groups believe in exactly these same things. I wrote directly to the people of America today – calling them out by name – because we have been fighting about some really stupid things for a long time. The virtues I wrote about today live in the hearts of the people of your nation, too, and of every other nation on earth. Wouldn't it be great if we focused on our similarities instead of our differences?*At any given time, there are about 2.5 billion ten-dollar-bills in circulation, but the average ten-dollar-bill is replaced by the Treasury Department every 5.3 years. We have been using Hamilton's portrait on the ten since 1928 (96 years).96 years/5.3 years = 1818 x 2.5 billion = 27 billion portraits of good brother AlexanderHow would Walt Disney run your company? Even though he died in 1966, his company and his disciples continue to spread his beliefs. Among these disciples is Brian Collins, a former Disney Imagineer who helped create the magic for many of the world's most beloved theme parks and is today teaching brainstorming and innovation and the cross-pollinization of technology to large and small companies around the world. Roving reporter Rotbart tells us that Brian Collins is a living example Walt Disney's statement, “It's kind of fun to do the impossible.” Put on your Mouse Ears and get ready for a Disney

He'll admit, Shawn Nason is a lot. He's looking for leaders who are mavericks. He's the founder and CEO of MOFI, a maverick-minded, human-obsessed boutique consulting firm that uses ethnographic research, journey mapping, human-centered design, experienced-based training, and design sprints to transform organizations. Shawn believes the only way to build a sustainable and thriving business is to put people first. As an experienced evangelist and experienced ecosystem designer, he unapologetically challenges leaders to blow up outdated, siloed systems and rebuild them with an aligned, human-first approach. He states, “If you put the human experience first in business you will get the numbers you need.” He helps companies realize the tangible benefits of this commitment: employee retention staying relevant in business significant revenue growth regaining hope for what the business experience could be He and Priscilla talk about the state of leadership and how our culture creates the expectation that it will be lonely at the top. But being lonely at the top is a choice. Shawn notes that leaders are struggling to authentically be themselves and still make a difference at work. Everyone talks about things like having a growth mindset and the like, but there is not much talk about a heart mindset. At MOFI, they help leaders take that short but seemingly long journey from their head to their heart. They help leaders discover that you can be a CEO of a company and have wonderful relationships. You can be supported and understood. You can create an environment where people can be respected AND loved. As a former Disney Imagineer, he remembers how this insistence on the right environment and attitude at Disney was not an optional part of working there. In fact, this absolute drew a line in the sand - you're either with us or not. When leaders take this stance the reality is that not everyone will follow and that is ok. When leaders let people go who cannot love their co-workers, they create a place where magic can be made and real growth is not thwarted. Give a listen to his thoughts on his most recently co-authored book, Kiss Your Dragons: Radical Relationships, Bold Heartsets & Changing the World. (link: https://www.amazon.com/Kiss-Your-Dragons-Relationships-Heartsets/dp/1944027866 ) In the end, they agree the secret to success means being transparent, building radical relationships and loving people.
