Performing since the age of 9, singer/songwriter/performer Doug Robertson knows a thing or two on how to craft a song. He learned at a very young age writing songs by taking a Beatles tune, and changing the lyrics, or vice versa, keeping the lyrics, and changing the song, to get a better grasp as to how a piece of music was structured. That experimentation helped develop his songwriting skills. As an adult, he fed his career by performing in Reno Nevada at local sandwich shops, and even wrote a commercial jingle for Schlotzsky's Sandwiches. Now residing in Nashville TN, Doug continues to write, record, and perform, but along his journey, has learned that an old dog must continue to learn new tricks, and adjust in one's application of their career, in order to have continued success. Robertson shares his work ethic, what he's learned on his musical path, and the epiphanies he's discovered along the way. www.songuy.com © 2023 Lotta Dogs Productions LLC Showrunner and Executive Producer Emeritus: Tom Sabella Producer and Host (the guy who has a face for podcasting): Bob Bender Management Representation: Chuck Thompson for Thompson Entertainment Group, LLC Co-Producer - Audio/Video Editor (the man behind the curtain): Mark Sabella Director of Video and Continuity (the brains of the entire operation): Deborah Halle Marketing and Social Media (all knowing): Sarah Fleshner for 362 Entertainment All Around Problem Solver (and Mental Health Therapist for us): Connie Ribas Recorded inside what could be an old beat up Airstream Trailer located somewhere on what's left of Music Row in Nashville TN (Man we sure do miss Noshville, and the Longhorn Steakhouse) Mixed and Mastered at Music Dog Studios in Nashville, TN Editing and Post at Midnight Express Studio located in Olian, NY Production Sound Design: Keith Stark Voice Over and Promo: Lisa Fuson Special Thanks to the creator and founder of the podcast, Tom Sabella, along with Traci Snow for producing and hosting over 100 episodes of the original "Business Side of Music" podcast and trusting us to carry on their legacy. Taking hard communication skills and helping people practice them in a safe and effective way can boost on the job performance by up to 50%. Want to know how to sustain sales, communication, and DEI training with experiential learning? At Practica Learning, where today's guest Doug Robertson is the AVP of business development, they do this. There, the learning doesn't stop after the knowledge has been transferred in an individual training session. They've created a reality providing opportunity for people to practice the skills either before they go back to their workplaces, or just after they get to the workplace. Wouldn't that make a difference to their ability to take the knowledge that they had learned and transfer it to the workplace; put learning into practice and change their behaviors? We talk about the unique way in which Practica Learning does this. It's their incredible ability to create a safe learning environment that makes all the difference for learning retention. Listen and take note of how to create this safe learning environment for your programs. Every coach, consultant, and learning professional should be embedding experiential learning whenever skill development is a desired outcome. In this episode, we also talk about the way COVID-19 has changed the world of virtual selling, how this requires a new skill set for your sales force. And, what can be done through training to foster inclusive and equitable behaviours in leaders through role play and direct feedback. These topics and much more make this a must-listen episode. One of the impediments older adults face with aging at home is the restrictions and obstacles created by the physical aspects of their home. Unless older adults live in a designated community, residential dwellings often become hazardous to them, as the dwellings can contain multiple flights of stairs, steps, and trip and fall hazards. Residential homes also need interior and exterior maintenance, which often requires the ability to carry objects and balance on ladders. In this episode of the Home Care Leadership Series, Doug Robertson talks to Sean Fitzgerald, President of TruBlue Total House Care. The company recently entered into a partnership with Right at Home locations nationwide. TruBlue caters to the needs of older adults seeking to age in their current homes by providing handyman services, home modifications, and extensive interior and exterior fall risk assessments by a Senior Safety Specialist.
The Medicare open enrollment period closes December 7 and is always a busy season for Medicare brokers and often a confusing time for seniors wading through benefit packages from multiple carriers. In this episode of the Home Care Leadership Series, Doug Robertson talks to Pete Blasi founder and President of My Senior Health Plan about the current trends he and his broker consultants are seeing in Medicare plans. The consultants at My Senior Health Plan are independent of all carriers and focus on the seniors as their customers, advising them on the best plan that meets their specific health needs.
Can an artist find happiness without finding success? Wanna Be Rock Star, Songwriter, and unwitting comedian Doug Robertson thinks so and shares his story with us on this episode. He got into the business because he liked the idea of girls screaming after him when he performed, an idea he got after seeing the Beatles perform on the Ed Sullivan Show when he was a young boy. At the age of nine, Robertson was ripping off and re-writing Beach Boy and Beatle songs. “That's how I learned how to structure songs,” Doug says. Upon moving to LA, his writing education continued under Oscar winner Al Kasha and songwriting guru John Braheny. His roots in '60's music led to the “New Vintage Acoustic Rock” style he presents today. Whether in bands or solo, Doug developed an engaging audience-centered performing style full of humorous stories and guitar-driven rhythms. If Doug has other performers with him you are going to hear some amazing harmonies. Doug enjoyed various solo and combo incarnations like 1975's formation of Christian band SHELTER, recording his tune "Bridge Builder” on the compilation album "Come Back Soon”. In 1996 Robertson recorded his first solo album "New Clothes”. When released, a radio personality introduced the title song saying “Here's something by a songuy named Doug Robertson”. The “Songuy” nickname stuck. The New Millennium saw Doug's Salute to the Woodstock era with his band “mAX YASGUR'S FARM” recording the ”Salute” CD in 2006. Performing credits include opening appearances for Johnny Rivers, Leonard Nimoy, Len Chandler, and Al Jarreau. He has been a featured act as a soloist and with his bands. Doug enjoyed 14 years as co-coordinator of Nashville Songwriters Association International's Reno, Nevada workshop. After founding his production company Nostrebor Music, he produced his own albums “New Clothes” and “Salute” and the self-titled debut CD for the band ZERO THEORY (With top 40 placement on national indie charts) Returning his focus as a Performing Songwriter, Doug has emerged from the studio with a new 6 song EP entitled “Epiphany” which is expected to be released in November 2020. Singles from “Epiphany included “Portola”- a '70's light rock tune about a lonesome railroad worker and “Why Are Armadillos In Nashville” - a Texas Swing explanation for the critters being found in Tennessee that is accompanied by an animated music video of cute armadillos. Robertson's new tunes are filled with delight and insight. “The Bla Bla Cafe” (60's Calif. Rock) portrays life in a gay cafe; “Like Don't Always Mean Love” (Joe Walsh Rocker) is about the only guy in the room who doesn't know he's falling in love. “And The Life (Ballad) is a tender look at a roadside memorial; “Hey Boss, You're Fired” (Bar-room Rock & Roll) tells off the boss. Taking your life back! Live appearances are jovial and engaging. Robertson has developed a live show entitled “Retrospective of a Western Hippie” where Doug and his band perform original and cover tunes that chronicle his life as a musical wannabe. “There are more people out there who tried and failed to become rock stars than the folks who actually made it.” Says Doug, “I relate to being the wannabe.” The Business Side of Music ™ © 2020 Beyond the Music Co-Produced & Hosted (by the guy who has a face for podcasting): Bob Bender Co-Producer, Creator & Technical Advisor (the man behind the curtain): Tom Sabella Director of Video & Continuity (the brains of the entire operation): Deborah Halle Editor (the “ums' and “aahs' removal guy who makes us sound good): Mark Sabella Marketing & Social Media: Kaitlin Fritts Executive Assistant to Bob & Tom, and editor for the Blog: Meagan Droke All Around Problem Solver: Connie Ribas Recorded at: The Bunker in Franklin, TN (except during the Covid 19 pandemic, then it's pretty much done VIA Skype or over the phone, with the exception for those fearless enough to come to Bob Bender's living room… and this is one of those episodes!). Insurance carriers have begun publicizing their 2021 Medicare Advantage plans, as seniors can start enrolling in the plans October 15. According to a recent announcement from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), carriers are including more supplemental benefits with each plan year cycle to address social determinants of health and chronic conditions, and to enable beneficiaries to age at home. Tyler Overstreet Cromer at ATI Advisory is a leading expert on supplemental benefits that began in 2019 after the CMS changed some of the rules surrounding plan development. In this episode of the Home Leadership Series, Doug Robertson and Tyler chat about the supplemental benefit changes and what they mean for home care. Tyler gained more than a decade of experience in federal health policy and budget at the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). She now advises ATI clients on innovative financing and delivery models. Most recently, Tyler served as a senior executive at the OMB providing oversight and expertise for budget development and execution across the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. She is particularly interested in payment policy and healthcare delivery system reform and in providing insights to ATI clients from her years of experience shaping federal policy on these topics. Tyler was in on the ground floor of many of the reforms to traditional Medicare, having led efforts at the OMB related to the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation since its inception until her arrival at ATI. Tyler also worked on the initial design and regulations implementing the Medicare Shared Savings Program. She has provided oversight of and guidance for various other health programs and agencies, including the Older Americans Act programs administered by the Administration for Community Living, federal policy related to electronic medical records, and the administrative budget of the CMS.

Our guest today, Doug Robertson, is one of the best teachers on the planet. He teaches 4th grade at Powell Valley Elementary School outside Portland, Oregon, and you might know him from his multiple interviews and podcasts, his books, his YouTube channel, or maybe his incredibly entertaining Twitter stream. While we usually focus on higher ed on the show, we had a great conversation with Doug about how we apply the fundamental principles of teaching in our respective classrooms.
In today’s episode we are talking about Doug Robertson’s 1991 film HauntedWeen starring Brien Blakely, Blake Pickett, Bently Tittle & Brad Hanks! It’s a fun, goofy little slasher that we both really love. We talk about The Haunting of Hill House(Spoiler free), drink St-Ambroise Pumpkin Ale from McAuslan Brewing Inc. Then we dive into this regional comedy/horror that, we think, was way ahead of its time in terms of its kills!

Bill and Brian are joined by educator and author Doug Robertson (aka the Weird Teacher, @theweirdteacher) to talk about what makes Metallica's Master of Puppets (1986, Elektra) great. Metallica, forebears of thrash metal and icons within the metal genre, spent a few years in the underground building a rabid fanbase before finally breaking through with their major label debut (which did so without the help of radio airplay or any music videos). Doug shares how listening to Metallica for the first time forced his body to experience puberty within a matter of seconds as a high school freshman. He then became a ravenous fan, taking in their back catalog and falling in love with each album in turn. Brian, Bill, and Doug discuss Nu metal, growing with fast and loud music, Metallica's musicality, Winger, Lars Ulrich's drumming skills (and maybe lack thereof), how Hetfield's lyrics are smarter than you may think, a whole bunch of really cool guitar things, Dave Mustaine, which song on the album is actually a sonata, a bunch about Cliff Burton's life (and death), and much more as we make our way through the album track by track!

I have learned that not everyone teaches the same way (DUH!). But, also, our own life experiences have taught us and shaped us into the people we are today. To be a great teacher, you don’t need to be like [Enter Great Teacher’s Name]. Doug and every excellent “popular” or famous or movie teacher have two things in common: A strong desire to be your own person, regardless of the status quo or anybody else’s judgments. A passion to help kids learn. As part of this podcast, I want to start interviewing master teachers who are really great at what they do. I am especially interested in teachers that are great at making their kids enjoy class and learn life lessons, not just making sure they are acing the tests. ;) Notes from my conversation with Doug: He used to teach in Hawaii, so we talked a little about that before the official interview started, but it was fascinating, so I included it. Teaching is a performance art Acting vs. Teaching. Importance of trust in teaching. What happens in my classroom happens because I want it to. Why you can’t keep complaining without doing something to fix it. It is OK to vent about kids. “But, my kids don’t give me much to complain about.” (That is because if they did, he would take responsibility for it!) “My classroom is noisy because it has to be noisy.” “My students are weird, what am I doing to make them weird.” I give two cents on why I like a noisy cafeteria. Some discussion on the term “digital native”. We should call what we do “Practicing Education” just like lawyers practice law and doctors practice medicine. How being a good teacher and establishing the basics allows us to know how we can change things up as we go along. What kind of an environment does Doug need to thrive? Trust! How trusting students is an extension of the trust from administration. Teach Like Your Hair is on Fire by Rafe Esquith How to have your own style. Don’t teach like someone else. Teach like yourself. Some kids don’t respond well to the style of Doug’s teaching.
Extinction at the K-Pg boundary CU professor Doug Robertson and a multidisciplinary team argue afresh that a global firestorm swept the planet in the hours after a mountain-sized asteroid vaporized above the Yucatan, 66 million years ago. When the blown-out rock missiled back to earth, Robertson says the atmosphere became so hot the whole world burned. Almost every organism above ground and in the air perished. We talk to Dr. Robertson about that terrible day and how some species reemerged. His team just published their research in the Journal of Geophysical Research-Biogeosciences.
