MDJ Script/ Top Stories for May 2nd Publish Date: May 2nd Commercial: From the Ingles Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Thursday, May 2nd and Happy Birthday to Dwayne ‘The Rock' Johnson. ***05.02.24 – BIRTHDAY – DWAYNE JOHNSON*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Kennesaw State Students Hold 2nd Protest for Palestinians Amid Nationwide Demonstrations Man Gets Decade Behind Bars for Stalking West Cobb Woman Smyrna Resident Detained on Murder Charges Plus, Bruce Jenkins sits down with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets to discuss breakfast ideas instead of vending machines. All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Kennesaw State Students Hold Second Protest for Palestinians Amid Nationwide Demonstrations Kennesaw State University students conducted their second demonstration supporting Palestinian rights, amidst calls for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East and urging the university to divest from companies tied to Israel. This action is in coordination with the Party for Socialism and Liberation in Atlanta. Notably, the protests have adhered to peaceful standards, abiding by university guidelines for unregistered events. A significant march took place through the campus, with university police providing traffic control without direct intervention. The student organizers, while focusing current efforts on supporting their counterparts at Emory University facing arrest, hinted at possible encampments during KSU's upcoming commencement. University officials are yet to comment. This protest is part of a larger wave of campus demonstrations across the country, calling for educational institutions to sever financial connections with Israeli-linked entities. STORY 2: Man Gets Decade Behind Bars for Stalking West Cobb Woman Michael Lydon Strong, 43, from Dallas, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for stalking his former girlfriend and her 13-year-old son in late 2020 in west Cobb. Already serving six years for selling cocaine, Strong was found guilty of aggravated stalking and disorderly conduct. The victim and her son had sought a restraining order against Strong due to his violent behavior. He violated the order by breaking into their home while they slept. The son called 911, and officers arrived while Strong was still inside. Strong's earliest release date is Oct. 12, 2030. Cobb District Attorney Flynn Broady Jr. emphasized the office's commitment to protecting domestic violence victims. STORY 3: Smyrna Man Arrested for Murder Bobby Pegues, 40, of Smyrna, was arrested for allegedly shooting and killing Travis Johnson, 48, in Marietta. Pegues faces charges including aggravated assault and murder. The incident occurred on Lorene Drive around 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Johnson later succumbed to his injuries at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital. Pegues is held without bond at the county jail. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to contact Cobb County Police at 770-499-3945. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We'll be right back Break: DRAKE STORY 4: Annual GHC Youth Fishing Rodeo Returns This June Georgia Highlands College will host its Annual GHC Youth Fishing Rodeo on June 1 at Paris Lake in Rome. The event, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., is free for children under 15. Parents can assist, but not fish. Prizes will be awarded for the heaviest fish in each age category. Other free activities will be available. Loaner gear will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Food will be available for purchase, along with a cash-only raffle. The lake will be stocked with fish prior to the event. For more information, visit the college's website. STORY 5: Whataburger Seeks Approval for New East Cobb Location Whataburger, a fast-food chain expanding in Cobb County, is eyeing a fifth location at the former O'Charley's site in east Cobb. The proposed 7,000-square-foot building at Sandy Plains and Shallowford roads includes a two-lane drive-thru, which conflicts with land-use restrictions set in a 1999 settlement. These restrictions prohibit fast-food restaurants or drive-thru services. Whataburger's request for a site plan approval, not rezoning, will go before the Cobb Board of Commissioners on May 21. The chain already has two locations in Kennesaw and plans for another in Acworth, pending construction. We'll be back in a moment Break: INGLES 5 STORY 6: LEAH MCGRATH And now here is Bruce Jenkins' conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets to discuss breakfast ideas instead of vending machines. Today we are talking with Laura Tierney from ShopLoaner.com and discussing something that is gaining a lot of momentum in our industry – vehicle loaners in your shop. This doesn't mean that you have to give out free loaners to people. This means another revenue stream for you. It means that you could provide a value to your guests by having a vehicle on site or even providing a vehicle for less money per day to customers who don't have rental coverage. It also allows you to really provide for that guest at another level. Does a replacement vehicle cause you to have storage issues? How many would you want to have for your shop?Where would you get these vehicles?Would this break the bank trying to insure these vehicles? What happens if a customer gets into a wreck in your loaner?Does this create more admin tasks for your team and bog them down further? How much more per repair could you be making when adding on a rental vehicle?I had so many questions and Laura was great to answer them all and give us some great things to think about! This week we're doing some rapid-fire questions to get through a bunch of questions! Our first caller has just been offered a new job as a shop foreman and wants to know how to negotiate salary. Our recommendation is to use the following equation: Base + hours + CSI kicker. The next question: which customers should get loaners? We give him a little Loaner 101. Next up: How many tickets should your advisors write per day? With a ratio of 3 technicians to every 1 advisor, you'll want to make 10-11 appointments knowing that 2-3 walk-ins are going to come in. And lastly: how often should you update customers? Tune in to find out! Susie Martin, Project Manager with Professional Services at Censis Technologies, Inc., and Carrie Miller, Perioperative Enterprise Coordinator at The Ohio State University, spoke with ConCensis about best practices for loaner tray management. Miller said that in the case of Ohio State University's healthcare network, Censis' LoanerLink is a critical solution for efficient and safe loaner tray management.“We have five locations and a large vendor influx at our two main locations,” Miller said. “And we see, on average, about two hundred vendor trays a week, plus consignment. Using LoanerLink allows us to look ahead and forecast what's to be expected.”LoanerLink's cloud-based solution assists organizations and healthcare facilities in managing vendor surgical assets. This solution supports both the operating room (OR) and the sterile processing department (SPD) activities while enabling more efficient staffing procedures.Interested in learning more about Censis Technologies' surgical asset management platform? In this episode of Articles On-The-Go, Hank Balch reviews the common excuses SPD gets from vendors and what should be done about it -- "Our roles as medical device reprocessors is to uphold standards and best practices to ensure adequate time is available and compliant processes are followed as it relates to vendor instrumentation. The fact that Dr. Johnson forgot to tell you about a case should not mean we are now pressured to cut corners and ignore manufacturer instructions for use to expedite a loaner tray for patients under our care. One breakdown in the process should not lead to another." #sterileprocessing #wefightdirty

https://youtu.be/7hqClM0a1zM Tom Lambert, owner of Shadetree Automotive. Tom Lambert got his start right at home. His dad and uncles always had projects going on in the home garage. During the summer vacation, his dad would have Tom remove engines from the vehicles that were being sent to the local machine shop for rebuilding. In the past three and a half years, Tom and his dad have made strategic adjustments in the business. They are now a $2.5 million dollar a year shop with 10% annual growth and profitability. They continue to improve every day. Tom says he has the best team and a strong culture. In January 2017 Tom bought his dad completely out of the business. Tom struggled for many years because he had lost his passion for the auto industry. After receiving all the guidance and coaching over the past few years, he is rejuvenated and has more passion than ever and is currently doing everything he can to pay it forward to other local shop owners. He has a high average ticket 50% of his customers take a loaner. If they don’t need it they don’t take it They balance the workflow and loaner schedule Risk is an inherent part of providing loaner cars Customer needs to have full coverage insurance Tom puts a portion of the costs of the loaners into marketing against his marketing budget Tom doesn’t have a minimum ticket to give out a loaner car. Even if an oil change he will give a loaner. Some dealers have a plateau or conditions that base if a customer gets a loaner car Greg believes he will add to his fleet. He may even get a pick-up truck to help his commercial accounts At the counter your two biggest objectionsTime: I need my car and can’t leave it (loaner car is tool to close that objections Financing: Give them this tool to help close Look at your opportunity costs. Tom finds on average $2300 wrong with every car. He knows that a loaner car and financing helps shore up these sales opportunities Greg had his advisors take out the loaner car out for a drive to get them in the ‘driver’s seat’ (https://aapexshow.com/serviceawards/) Resources: A special thanks to Greg Buckley and Tom Lambert for their contribution to the aftermarket. Singer-songwriter/fiddler Lille Mae and her brother, Frank, played "Manzanita," "Loaner" and "These Days," at the Quad-City Times. The final two song were off of Lille Mae's full-length debut album, called "Forever and Then Some." When it was released last year by Jack White's label, Third Man Records, music critics quickly put Lille Mae on a bunch of those "Artists to Watch," lists. And I think everyone in the newsroom -- and the 10,000 people who watched the video on Facebook over the weekend -- could see why. Something lovely and special happened when Lille Mae started singing and when she turned the fiddle to play it like a guitar. They live in Nashville now, but they were born in Illinois, so Lille Mae and Frank say that, after this, they're going to go hang out with their father. Several members of their family were also due to show up at Lillie Mae's show at the Triple Crown Whiskey Bar & Raccoon Motel. They left with more smiles and directions to a nearby record store. They love playing in Davenport, Lille Mae said. To them, it feels close to home.

Welcome, friendos! The political landscape may have shifted, but TBTL continues, and that means LRB is here to break it down. In your weekly recap, Mike, Meredith, and Ann puzzle over exactly what it means that Andrew’s been meeting “old colleagues” for lunch, reflect on how Carey’s becoming a true Burbank, (although her desire to follow rules and regulations is driving her husband crazy), and dissect Luke’s trolling of the Canadian Border Patrol, which makes Carey, Andrew (and frankly all of us) extremely nervous. Additionally, Luke strives for an advantage in the parking ticket arms race, Andrew doesn’t understand why he can’t find eggnog for purchase in January, and we learn that TBTL has a new supervisor. Welcome, and we hope you’re not listening. Along with all this week’s hot takes, Meredith shares how her tiny fence experience was a little more than she bargained for, Ann wants a moratorium on the phrase “on the nose,” (unless it refers to Luke’s dermatological issues) and Mike explains the concept of “sheet nipples." Plus, Simpsons Watch is a go, plans for the LRB slanket are being finalized (not really), and we’re busy creating an LRB raffle prize box that’ll give you the true, authentic aroma of Kyle, TX. Oh, and sorry about that whole Putin/Seagal imagery thing... we can’t get it out of our heads, either.

June Scobee Rogers watched in horror on the morning of January 28, 1986, as her husband and his six crew members faced catastrophic results immediately after lift-off on the Space Shuttle Challenger. Even more disturbing, aboard the shuttle was the first teacher in space, Christa McAuliffe, and tens of thousands of children had been watching the launch in schools across the country and around world. June has faced many hardships as a child, including poverty and homelessness, but today she will tell us the inspiring story of her life and her faith; her marriage to her teenage sweetheart at just 16 years old, and how she has created The Challenger Center, which has benefited over 4 million children.
