One thing comedians run into a lot, whether that is from our upbringing, the other comedians we do standup with, or even just the people we see come to the shows is addiction. NYC comedian Alli Breen comes by to talk about just that, including the different types of addictions different drugs or actions can cause, the source of these addictions, and how each addiction can affect each person differently. While not as funny as most of the episodes of this podcast are, it was a fantastic conversation! Follow Alli @allibreen on all social media and listen to her every Wednesday on the Bob & Tom show. 【句子】So the flowers were just a ruse. Figures. 【Desperate Housewives S02E03】【发音】/səʊ/ /ðə/ /ˈflaʊ.ər(z)/ /wɜː(r)/ /dʒʌst/ /ə/ /ruːz/ /ˈfɪgjərz/ 【发音技巧】just a连读;【翻译】所以这些花就是一个幌子,跟我想的一样。【适用场合】今天我们学习一下这个关键句中出现的两个口语表达:1. ruse看起来非常简单的一个名词:可以理解成:a trick intended to deceive someone“诡计;招数;幌子”eg: He used a ruse to get past the sentry.他使了一招,越过了哨兵。eg: This was a ruse to divide them.这只是一个为了离间他们的诡计。eg: She tried to think of a ruse to get him out of the house.她想找到一招,把他哄出房子。2. Figures.很多同学看到这会有点懵,其实这是It figures. 或者是That figures.但是本期视频中省略了第一个词。这个短语是什么意思呢?可以理解成:“有道理;讲得通;跟我预期的一样;跟我之前猜的一样”或者“描述某件事情符合情理”;It makes sense.或者It is as I expected or might have guessed.或者看这条英文解释:It is used to say that you are not surprised by something unpleasant that has happened.eg: A: "Sally already broke up with that new boyfriend of hers."B: "Yeah, it figures. The dude looked like a total creep!"A:“莎莉和她的新男朋友分手了。”B:“哈,我早就知道会这样,那家伙看起来就让人讨厌。”eg: Fired from another job, huh? Well, it figures. You were showing up late most days of the week!又被开除了?哈,肯定了!上周大部分时间你都迟到了!eg: Bob: Tom was the one who broke the window.Bill: It figures. He's very careless.鲍勃:“是汤姆打碎了那扇窗户。”比尔:“不意外,他毛手毛脚的。”eg: Ann: Mary was the last one to arrive.Sally: It figures. Can an artist find happiness without finding success? Wanna Be Rock Star, Songwriter, and unwitting comedian Doug Robertson thinks so and shares his story with us on this episode. He got into the business because he liked the idea of girls screaming after him when he performed, an idea he got after seeing the Beatles perform on the Ed Sullivan Show when he was a young boy. At the age of nine, Robertson was ripping off and re-writing Beach Boy and Beatle songs. “That's how I learned how to structure songs,” Doug says. Upon moving to LA, his writing education continued under Oscar winner Al Kasha and songwriting guru John Braheny. His roots in '60's music led to the “New Vintage Acoustic Rock” style he presents today. Whether in bands or solo, Doug developed an engaging audience-centered performing style full of humorous stories and guitar-driven rhythms. If Doug has other performers with him you are going to hear some amazing harmonies. Doug enjoyed various solo and combo incarnations like 1975's formation of Christian band SHELTER, recording his tune "Bridge Builder” on the compilation album "Come Back Soon”. In 1996 Robertson recorded his first solo album "New Clothes”. When released, a radio personality introduced the title song saying “Here's something by a songuy named Doug Robertson”. The “Songuy” nickname stuck. The New Millennium saw Doug's Salute to the Woodstock era with his band “mAX YASGUR'S FARM” recording the ”Salute” CD in 2006. Performing credits include opening appearances for Johnny Rivers, Leonard Nimoy, Len Chandler, and Al Jarreau. He has been a featured act as a soloist and with his bands. Doug enjoyed 14 years as co-coordinator of Nashville Songwriters Association International's Reno, Nevada workshop. After founding his production company Nostrebor Music, he produced his own albums “New Clothes” and “Salute” and the self-titled debut CD for the band ZERO THEORY (With top 40 placement on national indie charts) Returning his focus as a Performing Songwriter, Doug has emerged from the studio with a new 6 song EP entitled “Epiphany” which is expected to be released in November 2020. Singles from “Epiphany included “Portola”- a '70's light rock tune about a lonesome railroad worker and “Why Are Armadillos In Nashville” - a Texas Swing explanation for the critters being found in Tennessee that is accompanied by an animated music video of cute armadillos. Robertson's new tunes are filled with delight and insight. “The Bla Bla Cafe” (60's Calif. Rock) portrays life in a gay cafe; “Like Don't Always Mean Love” (Joe Walsh Rocker) is about the only guy in the room who doesn't know he's falling in love. “And The Life (Ballad) is a tender look at a roadside memorial; “Hey Boss, You're Fired” (Bar-room Rock & Roll) tells off the boss. Taking your life back! Live appearances are jovial and engaging. Robertson has developed a live show entitled “Retrospective of a Western Hippie” where Doug and his band perform original and cover tunes that chronicle his life as a musical wannabe. “There are more people out there who tried and failed to become rock stars than the folks who actually made it.” Says Doug, “I relate to being the wannabe.” The Business Side of Music ™ © 2020 Beyond the Music Co-Produced & Hosted (by the guy who has a face for podcasting): Bob Bender Co-Producer, Creator & Technical Advisor (the man behind the curtain): Tom Sabella Director of Video & Continuity (the brains of the entire operation): Deborah Halle Editor (the “ums' and “aahs' removal guy who makes us sound good): Mark Sabella Marketing & Social Media: Kaitlin Fritts Executive Assistant to Bob & Tom, and editor for the Blog: Meagan Droke All Around Problem Solver: Connie Ribas Recorded at: The Bunker in Franklin, TN (except during the Covid 19 pandemic, then it's pretty much done VIA Skype or over the phone, with the exception for those fearless enough to come to Bob Bender's living room… and this is one of those episodes!). It's been a solid 12 years, packed with earned life experiences and songwriting since Chad Harvey has released a new studio album. 2008 saw the release of his Get Lit album which provided a platform to tour through 2011. Initially to Harvey, that was a good thing. “The live shows to me are what it's all about. That is where you connect with your fans and I lay it all out there on the line and don't hold anything back—whether we are playing for five people or 500 people.” The relentless schedule started to show its weight and while being nudged by the label (Indie 500 Records) to start tracking the follow-up album, Harvey admits: “I was getting to the point of burn out; playing several nights a week while having to still maintain a day job to survive in Nashville.” He knew some rejuvenation was needed and took a two-week trip to Australia. On his flight back to the States he met his future wife and now they share two children with a full life. . . Except for one thing, Harvey exclaims: “Music!” With his creative cannon loaded and idea book bursting with new song titles, Harvey tracked Run From the Sound in 2015 alongside his longtime GRAMMY®-nominated producer Marc Johnson. Every once in awhile a singer-songwriter comes along that moves people to action—not necessarily a message to politicians for peace in wartime but instead a holler to the wallflowers to grab a cold beer and cut the rug at the local honky-tonk, sometimes a call to an estranged lover to come home—Chad Harvey is a songwriter whose songs do all of these things and more. Chad Harvey is a true American original born in Evansville, and raised in nearby Lynnville—that's Southern Indiana to the uninformed—just down the highway from Indiana's most famous musical export, John Mellencamp. . . an artist to whom Harvey has been compared. However, Harvey is far from a knock-off, Harvey delivers his self-penned emotive stories with an inimitable whiskey-stained voice. “Heyburn,” inspired by the small town of Heyburn, Idaho, spotlights Harvey's ability to capture the voice of the many living in small towns across America and it's because he was one of them. “This song idea came from a friend of mine, Craig Smith. He was traveling through Idaho and stopped for the night in Heyburn. He called me that night and told me about the place and how there was not much going on in the town, and how he imagined that if he lived there, he would want to get out. This struck a chord with me as it reminded me exactly of my hometown of Lynnville, Indiana. A small town of about 500 people in Southwestern Indiana that was built in the middle of the coal mines. Growing up there, all I wanted to do is get out and see what else was out there in the world.” A gifted writer and performer equipped with a six-string Gibson and a Midwestern drawl, Harvey also sports rough and tumble good looks reminiscent of a young Elvis Presley and a cool swagger that calls to mind another Hoosier native named James Dean. Through his songs, he says what he means and means what he says. With aspirations greater than what Indiana had to offer, Chad fled to Nashville, TN where he enrolled at Belmont University to “learn about the record business;” however, he found himself learning more about the music business by meeting people, listening to classic records, and watching bands perform live in local clubs. On one cold winter night, a pivotal moment happened, Chad tuned in to Austin City Limits to watch John Prine perform; and on the same show, he discovered an artist who would help guide his musical direction: Todd Snider. Considering this a sign, Harvey picked up and moved to Austin to walk the same Texas soil as his heroes and to develop his own songwriting chops and performing skills. Through Snider, Harvey was introduced to the Texas music scene that included Jerry Jeff Walker, Jack Ingram, Guy Clark, Chris Knight, Billy Joe Shaver, Charlie Robison, Bruce Robison to name a few. Chad proceeded to play every honky-tonk, voodoo haunt, and BBQ joint with a makeshift stage on the same trail blazed by Steve Earle and Townes Van Zandt years earlier including being a regular at the prestigious Kent Finlay's open mic night at Cheatham Street Warehouse in San Marcos, TX. Chad Harvey eventually moved back to Indiana to record his first full-length effort, Get Lit, backed by an amazing cast of supporting musicians including Mellencamp-alum Dane Clark on drums, GRAMMY®-winner Lloyd Maines on steel, and three-time GRAMMY®-winner Larry Franklin on fiddle. The end result was an astonishingly cool slice of Americana. ‘Get Lit' was released in 2008 and broke into the Americana top 100 and Chad toured extensively throughout the southeast and Midwest supporting the release. “Run From The Sound,” the title track off the new album, brings an introspective Tom Petty lyrical approach with a Mike Campbell-style approach to the guitar tracks. “This song was somewhat of a surprise to me,” notes Harvey. “When I arrived at the Pop Machine Studio to start tracking the record, Marc Johnson (Producer) said that he wanted me to hear something. He played me the song and I was immediately drawn to it. After listening to it a few times, I realized what the song was about. He wrote it about a relationship I had been in several years before. The song captured everything about it. I added a few of my touches to the song and we cut it.” The vitality of Chad's live shows is captured in Run From the Sound standouts such as “Heyburn,” “Rescue Me,” “Run From The Sound” and “Nashville Intermezzo.” Get in your pick-up truck, turn up the speakers as loud as they can go, and listen to Chad Harvey tell the truth…or at least something close to it. Sarah Beth Perry is the Founder and CEO of With the Band, a fan engagement platform founded in 2017 that strives to develop a community for fans and artists to feel a part of something bigger than themselves. In only 3 years, Perry has grown With the Band from an idea in her dorm room to captivating packed out arenas with her creative and collaborative fan projects and meetups. Some of her most notable experiences include her fan engagement activations at the Jonas Brothers' highly-anticipated HAPPINESS BEGINS TOUR and Kacey Musgraves' OH WHAT A WORLD TOUR sold-out concert in Nashville, TN. After winning her first pitch competition in 2017, Perry saw the opportunity she had to further pursue her dream of kickstarting With the Band. Throughout college, she continued to win awards and grant money from multiple pitch competitions from organizations like Belmont University, Sigma Nu Tau, LaunchTN, and was a finalist for both AARP's Innovation Labs Pitch Competition and the Global Student EntrepreneurAwards. In October of 2019, less than a year after graduating from Belmont University with a double major in Entrepreneurship and Music Business, Perry was named one of Belmont's Top 100 Alumni Entrepreneurs. Upon seeing her concept come to fruition, Perry was encouraged to continue exploring other fan engagement avenues. Being a fangirl herself, she realized there was an opportunity to create better relationships between an artist and their fans. With the vision to be the premiere fan engagement company, With the Band will launch a new modern-day version of a fan called Fan Crews this fall. In 2004, as a musician, Ryan Kintz found that if you weren't signed to a label, or didn't have a booking agent, it difficult to book shows as an Indie Artist. He started renting out venues in the Portland OR area, having friends who had bands, play shows and wound up producing 6 to 10 shows per month. With that, Afton Shows was born. Ryan talks with us regarding his different platforms, including My Afton booking platform, Afton Tickets, and Afton Live Stream, which is designed to help showcase bands virtually, especially during this pandemic, creating a virtual space that is artist-focused. We also talk about how you can make money as a live stream artist. We touch on whether Facebook Live is the best route, or is there something better out there. With Afton, they help you design a virtual show that you can monetize off of. Ryan Kintz is the founder and CEO of Afton Tickets, MyAfton, and Afton LiveStream. Chris Schlichting makes people laugh for a living. Both on stage and in a high school classroom. However, sitting in a hospital for three months with one of this newborn twins clinging to life was anything but funny. In this episode I talk with Chris about bombing on stage, awkward talks with his father-in-law, and the one joke his wife won’t let him tell anymore. Described as “hilarious” by his mom and “not good at sports” by his dad, Chris Shlichting takes pride in his immature and lovable comedic style. He travels the country making people laugh, and has been heard on the Bob & Tom radio show (amongst other places). Chris’ act covers hard hitting issues like squirrels, sandwiches, and his twin boys.
The second hour of Wednesday's show, live at Top Golf in Fishers for the Bob & Tom Golf Outing features our betting expert Rafael Esparza and the legendary Chick McGee from Bob & Tom.
Comedian Brent Terhune joins me in the Lab to discuss his life of comedy! From Indianapolis, Brent describes himself as an OG and got started with comedy at the age of 18, and currently performs stand-up full time. (By the way, OG stands for “Original Ginger.”) He has education and experience in radio and is now making videos on YouTube! He is also a writer and frequent guest on the Bob & Tom show. We discuss complex issues regarding politics, satire, and government hypocrisy, much of which inspires his YouTube videos. Although his videos have satirical underpinnings, Brent describes himself and his comedy as “likeable”. We also talk about what it means to be successful for artists, what he does to get through tough times, and the importance of finding humor in the tragedy of life.
The Blues superfan and Bob & Tom personality talked about his beloved NHL team taking the Cup and overrated/underrated St. Louis food items.
Mo Alexander has played the comedy game for almost two decades and has headlined all over the country in top clubs and theaters. He has also opened for Keenan Ivory Wayans during his 1999 comedy tour where he was in the running with Wanda Sykes for the opening slot and Keenan chose Mo. He also had his own theater show, The Mo Funny show in Las Vegas with his partner in crime and comedy Matt Davis. In 2010 he participated in the San Francisco comedy competition where he missed making the semi finals by a .006 percent. Mo has also released 4 cd’s of original material (2000) The Mo Files, (2004) Evolution, and (2008) Nappy Headed Hoes and other Fcc Infractions, (2012) Just in Case the Mayans are Right and one compilation (2010) Teabaggin. In Feb 2012 he was featured on the nationally syndicated Bob & Tom radio program where he has been invited to return soon to earn the moniker of a Bob & Tom regular. Alexander's style is to offend those people and ideals that have offended him; ideals such as ignorance, narrow-mindedness and for that matter, the easily offended. Alexander's comedy in a fun contradictory social study. He's lovably evil; techno-geek with social skills; scooby doo after he ran away from the mystery machine gang and started hanging out with the old men scaring the children away. The only predictability from his shows is that laughter and thought will ensue. Check him out. Buy him a shot or ten of higher end Tequila (no Cuervo!) and watch the antics of a true entertainer push the limits of what you thought was possible in comedy... without ending up at your local police department. Demand this delightfully twisted, insightful and fun comic to come around to your town, because until you see him, y'all

On today's episode, the guys discuss Todd going on Bob & Tom, Pat's time on Get Up, and what some of their weekend plans are. They also chat about some news stories including artificial intelligence taking over the London police department, a blind man suing Playboy because their website isn't accessible, the entire crew gets into a debate about what is and what isn't an assist in basketball, and find themselves having a lengthy discussion about The Rock. Todd wants the guys to essentially write a movie around a couple of actors, they answer some listener questions including who they'd all choose to be with if they were deserted on an island where the natives where cannibals, and as always, send you into the weekend with a couple of Friday Bangerz. It's a good time. Come and join us. This episode features @PatMcAfeeShow, @toddmccomas, @Digz, @nickmaraldo, @tyschmit, @BostonConnr, @VivalaZito, @evanfoxy, and @baileymccomas.

If you grew up in Central Indiana in the 70’s and 80’s you probably listened to WNAP. Cris Connor and his band of rebel “djs” changed the radio landscape and left a mark on many a listener. I would be one. I was in high school when I first heard “the Wrath of the Buzzard”. It was in your face, loud, exciting, topical, and the music: free form. It sounded like their parents were gone for the weekend and they could get away with anything, and they did. I was fortunate to sit down in the Bob & Tom studios with a few of the major players recently: Cris Connor, Fast Freddy Fever, Bruce Munson, Ann Craig and Buster Bodine. Talk about stories. We find out how all of this madness started, how each player came to be a part of the station, the beginning of the legendary Raft Race, and some promotions that may not have been so successful. Also favorite memories from each of our guests. One involves death and another a carpet square (guess which jock carried his own carpet square). We also discuss other great jocks who honed their skills at the controls of 93.1 The Buzzard. This show was so much fun and a dream come true for this gal. I am proud to say I did join the ranks of the Buzzard in 1981 albeit part time. So now, not only can I say I was on the staff I can also call these talented folks my friends! Kristi has alluded to the fact that her mom has recently gone through a difficult time and that has meant an increase in her time away from the podcast. Plus we are honoring Morty's Comedy Joint, which always holds a special place in our heart because it hosted the first Kristi Lee Uninterrupted Live Show (and all the subsequent live shows). It is in forced relocation mode and has closed until the end to middle of Summer. So what better throwback episode than the time we went live with Jimmy 'Mad Dog' Matis and talked early Bob & Tom, the time he fought a bear, avoided his wife and more. -------------------------- Jimmy may be a funny guy but he is happy and content with his life after 25 years with Q95 and the Bob and Tom Show. He now works for the Indianapolis Colts securing sponsors and doing off-season radio. But most of all, he feels blessed with a wife of 30 years and five boys. He enjoys entertaining in his pool house and whiffle ball field. Jimmy Matis (aka Dog) joins Kristi Lee live at Morty’s Comedy Joint to reminisce about the old days of the Bob and Tom Show, along with the wild and crazy times...road trips, excursions in the Bahamas, singing backup, among many more. What happens when George Lopez, Chick McGee, and Jimmy ‘Mad Dog’ Matis hang out in Tijuana? Find out on this live version of Kristi Lee Uninterrupted. If you’re into Bob and Tom history, then you’ll love this show.
This week Jason talks to Dave Nelson, the Fake Advice for New Comics segment contributor and host of the podcast Comedy A-Go-Go, about the curse of the show crossing over into his podcast. There is a battle rap by Epic Rap Battles of History between Stephen King and Edgar Allan Poe. Then comedian Karen Rontowski joins the show. Karen has been a touring headlining comedian and has been on the Bob & Tom radio show, the Late Show with David Letterman, Ghosthunters and many other shows. In addition to stand up comedy, Karen is a professional tarot card reader. They talk about a very weird experience that happened in Jason's house over the weekend, if the show is cursed, what the future of the show is and much, much more. Wanna contact the show? Dave Dugan, probably best known as the voice Bart McAlister as well as many other characters from the Bob & Tom Show over the years, joins us in the studio. We talk how he began his radio career, what led him to LA for comedy and voiceover work, his entrance to the Bob & Tom Show, a couple of funny stories from some Bob & Tom trips and also his latest comedy tour "Dugan's Aren't Losers". We hope you enjoy the show. Update: New intro and close, as the Comedy Club Dave was going to headline this week (October 27 - 29) is closed. Crackers Comedy in Broad Ripple has been shut down... New intro and close have been added to the podcast to reflect this change
The Graham-Cassidy bill is yet another version of Obamacare repeal -- but is that what it does? We cover the ongoing debate, with plenty of the usual fun. Show notes for Ep. 105
Not safe for work, ya turkey. Hanging out at Peter Winsky’s house. Game of Thrones references we don’t understand. The guys take a shot of Jameson together. They’re also drinking water. LA Symphony as “the bad boys” of Christian rap. “In life you choose what you do and what you don’t do. We weren’t making good choices, we were letting it happen to us instead of saying, ‘No, we dictate who we are and how we present our brand.’” “The one rule we always obeyed as LA Symphony is basically, ‘Keep it real.’ So whatever we felt, we were allowed to talk about it. But there were rules, there were parameters…” Cookbook’s journey out of Christianity. “We’re all still on a journey. I don’t claim to know anything. Really.” “Like nobody knows, really knows, what happens after you die. Nobody knows that. You know who knows? My dad. You know why? Olivia Chug voices her opinion. On Islam, non-Christians, and hell? Religious faith in cultures. People who claim to know with certainly? Cookbook says you’re “arrogant and full of shit.” J “Blood Suckin’ Freaks” by Cookbook & Blu, featuring KRUM (formerly Playdough) from the Yes EP. Cookbook wants to know what’s up with denominations. Chunjay on the historical road of Eastern Orthodoxy. On Roman Catholicism. Cookbook pushes back on Biblical authority and Christian denominationalism. “The God of the Gaps.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_of_the_gaps “I live by Biblical principles. I feel like you can bank on that. ‘You reap what you sow.’ You can bank on that, that’s true. How you treat others, you know, and giving love and all those things, you know, serving people, those things’re important and you can live by those things.” “Little Shirts” (Remix) from the Cookbook & Uno Mas Stereo-Types LP. “Do you ever fear death?” “We all die, so it’s about how we live.” “Do you ever miss the Jesus story?” “What’s your favorite taco?” On mofongos and pasteles. Episode 10 begins with Henry Phillips and Craig Robinson (Darryl from The Office) singing an original song to Bob about his podcast. Henry Phillips is a guitar playing stand up comic who has been on Comedy Central, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Late Friday's, and is a favorite on the Bob & Tom radio show. Most recently he wrote and starred in the hilarious semi autobiographical film Punching the Clown (available on iTunes, Netflix, and Amazon). In this episode Henry discusses his start in comedy, his Dad's turn in Porky's 2, bagels, and life in Hollywood. CRAIG ROBINSON from the hit NBC sitcom The Office and Hot Tub Time Machine makes a surprise guest appearance in the first 20 minutes (in case you didn't read the first sentence).
