Dave Hackett of Keeping Track interviewed Paul McDermott back in April 2023. Paul began his media career here on Cork Campus Radio. Paul McDermott has been described as a cultural historian documenting Cork's musical heritage. If you're a regular listener to Cork Campus Radio, you will have heard his documentaries on Microdisney, Stump, Andrew Weatherall, and Finbar Donnelly from Five Go Down To The Sea & Nun Attax. More recent offerings such as his documentary on the Sultans of Ping, which was released as the band celebrated 30 years of Casual Sex In The Cineplex, was aired on RTE's 2XM and his feature on the music of Sliabh Luachra, which aired on RTE's Lyric FM, was described by the Irish Times as 'an evocative reminder of the magical role music can play in our lives'. When not documenting Cork's musical heritage, he teaches radio production, journalism studies and media analysis in Rathmines College, he broadcasts Songs To Learn & Sing on Dublin City FM, and he also produces the NO.1 podcast, To Here Knows When - Great Irish Albums Revisited.

Dave Hackett presents Keeping Track on UCC98.3FM. He describes the show as: “an alternative music and interview show.” Dave presents a really great show and has had some really interesting guests on recently. Dave asked me all about how I got into producing radio documentaries, the ethos of community radio broadcasting, how To Here Knows When came about and a whole lot more. A growing need for more mid-market affordable housing, particularly in its targeted Sun Belt markets, has Elme Communities (NYSE: ELME), formerly WashREIT, anticipating its strongest growth in 20 years, says President and CEO Paul McDermott.“That mid-market renter is really the deepest part of the demand curve, and we only see that curve growing,” McDermott told the REIT Report. While acknowledging the current volatile interest rate climate, he added that it doesn't “erase the fact that there is a significant need for more affordable homes, especially in the markets that we're targeting, and in that particular rental band cohort that we're targeting also.”Elme has been fully focused on multifamily since completing the sale of retail and office assets in 2021, although the REIT started messaging its intent to focus on multifamily back in 2016.McDermott noted that households making between $35,000 and $75,000 comprise over a third of rental households in its targeted Sun Belt markets. However, the share of new product delivering into those markets since 2018 that's affordable to households making around $60,000 is 2% or less, he added.

They are seemingly the three hardest words to say in public life: “I was wrong”. The process of changing minds – individually, collectively and culturally – is made that much harder by a political landscape in which admitting uncertainty, confessing error or revealing a change of heart is actively discouraged. Hear from some of Australia's most respected holders of deep-seated beliefs – David Marr, Jane Caro, Paul McDermott and Marcia Langton – as they each present a short talk on a topic that deepened their learning, evolved their thinking or flat out changed their mind. A market crash is one of the scariest moments for a retiree. However, history shows that these moments, while scary, do not cause financial ruin. In our second episode, host Jason Siperstein and co-host Paul McDermott are joined by Justin Fitzpatrick. Justin is co-founder and chief innovation officer of Income Lab, the only firm that provides dynamic—not static—retirement income software. Before co-founding the firm, Justin worked for 10 years in financial services, leading teams in advanced financial planning and portfolio strategy, managing development of financial technology tools, and designing and executing strategies to enter new markets. Before that he spent seven years in academia, teaching at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT); Harvard University; Queen Mary, University of London; and the University of California, Los Angeles. Listen to Jason, Paul, and Justin as they discuss the importance of “dynamic” retirement planning. Key Takeaways: • Historically quick market crashes have not spelled catastrophe for retirees • Have a plan for change if markets do worse (or better) than expected • Retirement unfolds slowly allowing us time to adjust when needed

The story of a chance meeting in 2008 between Andrew Weatherall, the world-renowned DJ, producer and remixer, and Gerard Sheehy, a Co. Cork fisherman. How this meeting inspired Weatherall to use the phrase “Fail We May, Sail We Must” as a personal mantra and how the phrase, in turn, has become an inspiration for thousands of others. It details how in 2021, on the first anniversary of Weatherall's death, Sheehy was identified as the source of the phrase and tells how the two disparate worlds of the music and fishing industries collided. Produced by Paul McDermott for Learn and Sing Productions. Sound supervision by Kieran Hurley.
Welcome to the first episode of the “Worry Less, Retire More” podcast! Our goal is to provide relevant and practical tips on planning for and living in retirement. In each episode, we hope to achieve this by talking about a different retirement-related topic such as sustainable spending, tax reduction strategies, Social Security claiming, and more. In our premier episode, your host, Jason Siperstein, President of Eliot Rose Wealth Management, with his cohost, Paul McDermott, Director of Retirement, talks about the 4% rule in retirement. Let's face it; there are a lot of “rules” to follow when one retires. And it's no easy task to separate the ones worth following from the ones to ignore. Join Jason and Paul as they cover everything you need to know about the 4% rule – from its creation to what it aims to solve. Most importantly, they go deeper and discuss the right way to interpret this standard. Topics Discussed: What is the 4% rule? The (many) issues with the 4% rule What is static financial planning, and does it work? A preview of our Sustainable Spending Analyzer® (SSA) Closing Quote: “Everyone has a unique set of circumstances, a unique plan, and the market environment is constantly changing.” Links: Eliot Rose Wealth Management https://www.eliotrose.com/
Welcome to Season 2 of the podcast. In this episode, Paul Kildea speaks with artist, singer, comedian, actor and author, Paul McDermott.
Paul McDermott makes a mean cup of tea. But you probably know him better as a member of the Doug Anthony All Stars and the former host of Good News Week. This week, he catches up with Mia to talk about growing from a demon-free twin into an instrument-eschewing artist with a pretty voice; falling into Adelaide Fringe Award-winning DAAS through a chance encounter outside a food truck; being ocularly impaled on a Silverchair drumstick during a live television broadcast; and the many other sides of his increasingly public visual and sonic creativity. He also delivers a very special live performance of "Canberra (In the 70s)" from his new EP, 'I've Seen The Future And You're Not In It', accompanied by Glenn Moorhouse. This episode was produced by Tash Noore. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Everyone and their mothers know about the "classic albums". They're classic for a reason. But what about releases that never made their way to the public? Or the ones that never got the foothold they deserved? Music broadcaster and documentarian Paul McDermott is here to give us a rundown on some of the most iconic examples.
This episode focuses on Viva Dead Ponies by The Fatima Mansions. Viva Dead Ponies - the second album by The Fatima Mansions - was released in late 1990 on Kitchenware Records. Cathal Coughlan discusses the writing and recording of what many consider to be the band's greatest album. The conversation takes in: Microdisney ending and starting The Fatima Mansions; gigs the band played in Ireland and the US; circumnavigating American “meet + greet” events; kissing the runway at Knock Airport before handing out condoms at the Marian Shrine; and contemplating the songs on Viva Dead Ponies from a distance of 30 years. Produced by Paul McDermott for Learn & Sing Productions.

Audience Warning: This episode contains references to child sexual abuse. Released in 1992, Another Day, Another Riot was Toasted Heretic's third album. It was released by Liquid Records, a subsidiary of Solid Records. Toasted Heretic were from Galway and they preceded Another Day, Another Riot with two cassette-only albums, Songs For Swinging Celibates (1988) and Charm and Arrogance (1989). These albums were followed in 1990 by The SMUG EP, which included ‘They Didn't Teach Music In My School' a song about child sex abuse in Ireland. Toasted Heretic's cassettes were distributed through book and record shops and via mailorder – a cottage industry both physically and geographically outside the Irish Music Industry. Toasted Heretic were: Julian Gough on vocals, Declan Collins and Breffni O'Rourke on guitars, Neil Farrell on drums and Aengus McMahon on bass. Q magazine once declared them, “powerful articulate and original”, while Mother Records described them as - too original. In this episode I discuss the album with Toast Heretic's singer and lyricist Julian Gough. Our conversation includes a chat about all of Toasted Heretic's recordings, a discussion about the nature of fame, and the oddity of looking back and re-evaluating art. A novelist, Julian resides in Berlin and is also the author of the successful children's book series, Rabbit & Bear. Produced by Paul McDermott for Learn & Sing Productions.
Whipping boy's second album Heartworm was released on 23 October 1995. I first saw Whipping Boy in the early 90s in Cork. I loved the two Cheree EPs and their debut Submarine. Their gigs were always intense, explosive tinderbox affairs. Then we heard that they'd signed a record deal with Sony. Well this'll be interesting, we all thought. Heartworm was a revelation. In this episode I discuss the album with Paul Page, the band's guitarist. We talk about: the influence of seeing of Echo & the Bunnymen at Dublin's SFX in 1985; Whipping Boy's early days; passing off songs from Pop Will Eat Itself as their own demo tape to get a gig in Dublin's Underground; the early Cheree EPs; Submarine; signing to Sony; the writing and recording of Heartworm; touring with Lou Reed; and Heartworm's reissue. Produced by Paul McDermott for Learn & Sing Productions.
"In Ireland, on average, we listen to 4.2 hours of radio every day." On this Mediascope episode, Ellen Gunning sits down with Paul McDermott from Rathmines College to discuss the radio landscape in Ireland. McDermott elaborates on the idea that radio in Ireland is constantly passive and in the background of many homes and how Ireland likes to consume the closest neighbour's media (UK), but they don't consume Ireland's. All content is owned by Dublin City FM.
