IT ALL COMES DOWN TO THIS. A WINDSWEPT FIELD. TWO SUN-BEATEN MEN IN WIDE-BRIMMED HATS. ITCHY TRIGGER FINGERS. THE MUSIC CRESCENDOS. THE FINAL SHOWDOWN. After a short break and some technical difficulties, Gabe and Patrick are back to finish what they started, looking back at 15 spaghetti westerns released in the year 1968. We saved some the greatest movies and the hottest takes for last – Sergio Corbucci's The Mercenary (Italian: Il mercenario), Enzo G. Castellari's Kill Them All and Come Back Alone (Italian: Ammazzali tutti e torna solo), Corbucci's The Great Silence (Italian: Il grande silenzio), and Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West (Italian: C'era una volta il West). Devin & James are back in the Den to bid a final "ciao" to the TOUR OF ITALY series with a look at the violent world of POLIZIOTTESCHI movies! (or Eurocrime, for the pronunciation challenged.) Italy had a special touch with crime thrillers during their politically tumultuous "Years of Lead," and we go over some of the genre's highest points, starting with Enzo G. Castellari's HIGH CRIME (1973), starring Franco Nero, and Franco Nero's mustache. We follow that with Lucio Fulci's only crime film, the gloriously bloody CONTRABAND (1980). Then we get into the sticky details around the release of Mario Bava's underseen and underrated RABID DOGS/KIDNAPPED, and why two different cuts of this movie were finally released over 20 years after the movie was shot and abandoned in 1974. We follow that with some fun in Umberto Lenzi's THE CYNIC, THE RAT, AND THE FIST (1977), which matched up 3 of the genre's most iconic stars (Milian, Merli, & Saxon). Finally, we cover the influential second entry of Fernando Di Leo's "Milieu Trilogy," THE ITALIAN CONNECTION (1972), where actor Mario Adorf outshines hitmen Henry Silva and Woody Strode to give the most heart-pounding and heartbreaking pimp performance we've ever seen. We're sad to finally be leaving Italy behind (for now), but we closed out with some of our favorite movies ever committed to celluloid. Buckle in and hold on for some off-the-wall Italian mayhem.

This week Bryan and Dave take a trip back to Rome to check in with Enzo G. Castellari and Mark Gregory on their sequel to the 1982 action movie that exploited the popularity of The Warriors. This time they're exploiting the popularity of John Carpenter's outstanding, Escape From New York. We get more Trash and more Bronx gangs but this time we're joined by the absolute massive screen presence of Antonio Sabato and the movie's appeal rests entirely on the outrageous shoot-y, burn-y, explode-y violence that ups the ante and cranks the volume. Escape From The Bronx has practically zero plot to speak of and is an incredibly dumb movie at heart but it's a lot of fun and some of the best action that Italy had to offer in the twilight of their once-great exploitation movie industry. Let us break it all down for you. PREPARE YOUR SIX-GUNS AND YOUR BOLOGNESE AS WE DIG INTO THE TWO-FISTED ITALIAN COWBOY TALES OF THE BIGGEST YEAR IN SPAGHETTI WESTERN HISTORY! Welcome to another multi-part exploration of a single year in genre filmmaking. Join Gabe and returning guest Patrick Ripoll as they follow up their series on the slasher films of 1981, the gialli of 1971, and the giant monster movies of 1957 with a look at the spaghetti westerns of 1968. Gabe, a superfan and massive nerd, narrowed down a list of seventy-seven (that's 77) films to the 15 he thinks best represent this jam-packed and particularly uneven year for the genre. In episode one of what will (probably) be three total episodes, we discuss Ferdinando Baldi's Django, Prepare a Coffin (Italian: Preparati la bara!), Giorgio Capitani's The Ruthless Four (Italian: Ognuno per sé), Lina Wertmüller & Piero Cristofani's The Belle Starr Story (Italian: Il mio corpo per un poker), Enzo G. Castellari's Johnny Hamlet (Italian: Quella sporca storia nel west), and Giorgio Stegani's Beyond the Law (Italian: Al di là della legge). Devin & James are back in the Den with their penultimate visit to Italy! This time we shift from focusing on one genre to examining a type of film that is not uniquely Italian, but they sure put their own style on: THE KNOCK-OFF. Low-budget films ripping off box office hits has always been a popular way for Producers to make a buck. Still, the filmmakers themselves can sometimes bring their own spin to a popular trope or trend and create works that rise above being called simply imitations. And then... there are the imitations. We make the case that there is plenty to enjoy about all the approaches, as long as you know what you're getting into. We start with the sharksploitation film that Universal Studios successfully took off the market for lifting the plot of Jaws in 1981, Enzo G. Castellari's THE LAST SHARK (with a bonus look at CRUEL JAWS). If imitation is flattery, then Bruno Mattei must be one of the most complimentary filmmakers ever to play the game, and we dive into his back-to-back sci-fi knocks-offs from 1989, ROBOWAR (Predator featuring a Robocop) and SHOCKING DARK (Aliens featuring a Terminator). We finish up with a couple of films that are inspired by the head-spinning, pea soup-spitting world of The Exorcist, but that build their unique plots and bizarre twists to create works that stand on their own, Alberto De Martino's THE ANTICHRIST, and Ovidio G Assonitis and Roberto D'Ettorre's BEYOND THE DOOR, both from 1974. Grab a can of Campbell's Pea Soup and a straw, and buckle in.

Sammy from the Gentlemen's Guide to Midnite Cinema is back to sing a love song to the Spaghetti Western with us. Well, not sing, exactly, but we sure do talk a lot about them. It's a bumper-length episode to cover this beloved genre for us, and we focus on a double feature of The Great Silence (1968), directed by Sergio Corbucci and Keoma (1976), directed by Enzo G. Castellari. We will be announcing a Spoiler Territory section for both films, so if you haven't seen them before you listen, you can nevertheless avoid spoilers for The Great Silence by skipping ahead to the 1:22:41 mark, and for Keoma by skipping ahead to 2:26:05. We're back! After a bit of a hiatus, we're back on the airwaves with a brand new episode of Cultpix Radio. It feels good to be back, and we've got a lot to catch up on. This episode is all about filling you in on what we've been up to during our break, the incredible events we've hosted, and the exciting content we've been adding to Cultpix.First up, we dive into the recently concluded Wickman Week. This was an event like no other—a celebration of exploitation and genre cinema that took place at a truly unique location in Sweden. We screened films on 35mm, welcomed guest speakers from around the globe, and even handed out our very first Torgny Award to the one and only Lisa Petrucci from Something Weird Video. Lisa's contributions to the world of exploitation cinema are unparalleled, and we were thrilled to honor her in this way. We also streamed all the non-film content live on Facebook and YouTube, and it's still available to watch on our YouTube channel, though we'll be moving it to Cultpix soon.Next we take you through the recent themed months on Cultpix. We wrapped up Amazonian August, where we dug deep into the Something Weird Video archives to unearth some truly bizarre new jungle films. There's also the ongoing Italian Genre Maestros week, featuring cult classics like "Massacre in Dinosaur Valley" (1985) and several works by Enzo G. Castellari. These films are quintessential examples of the Italian exploitation genre, and we're excited to showcase them, even if some are geo-blocked to Scandinavia.Speaking of what's coming up, we're especially excited about the impending arrival of Satanic September. This month, we'll delve into the dark and twisted world of satanic cults and rituals with a carefully curated selection of films from Something Weird Video and beyond. We've got everything from "My Tale Is Hot" to "To Hex with Sex," and it's going to be one hell of a month! We've also been hard at work on something many of you have been asking for—apps! Yes, we are finally developing apps so that you can enjoy Cultpix on more than just your web browser. First an app for the Amazon Fire TV Stick, which will make it easier for us to roll out apps for Android TV as well. Roku is also on our list, and after a few bumps in the road, we're optimistic about launching a Roku app by the end of the year. We're even eyeing smart TVs and Apple TV as future platforms. We wrap up the episode by reflecting on the films and events that have made the past few months so memorable. From our juvenile delinquency-themed June to the Swedish Sin celebration in July, we've been busy curating and bringing you the best of cult cinema. And don't worry—this episode isn't a one-off. We're committed to returning to more regular programming, with more episodes, more themed weeks, and more deep dives into the wild and wonderful world of cult films. So, sit back, relax, and let us take you on a journey through what's new, what's coming, and what's making Cultpix the ultimate destination for exploitation and genre cinema fans. We've missed you, and we can't wait to share all the exciting things we have in store. Also, enjoy the five-hour (!) Spotify playlist from our recent book launch - order the book HERE! This week we have a pair of supremely stylish post-apocalyptic films by Italian director Enzo G. Castellari and starring Fred Williamson. 1990: THE BRONX WARRIORS (1982) and THE NEW BARBARIANS (1983). 1990: I GUERRIERI DEL BRONX (1982) e I NUOVI BARBARI (1983).
The boys are back and this time they are taking a look at one of the most underrated directors to ever come out of Italy, Enzo G Castellari. They will be taking a look at Keoma, The Big Racket, and Inglorious Bastards.
Movie Meltdown - Episode 624 We're back to round out the Enzo G. Castellari trilogy as we discuss Escape From the Bronx. And while we carefully construct an exact miniature version of our future city, we also delve into… Dune 2, Sydney Sweeney, Jodorowsky's Dune, Poseidon, Emmy Rossum, Turkey Shoot, Henry Silva, Mark Gregory, the death truck rolls up and the guys pour out, George Miller, are they being exploded or electrocuted, Piranha 3D, animal safety in films, Wish stormtroopers, Antonio Sabato, goombas in suits, influencing science fiction, Wolfgang Petersen, Strike Jr, Three Thousand Years of Longing, The NeverEnding Story, Australian post-apocalyptic movies, setting up explosions, Escape from New York, a post-apocalyptic sewer, Australian exploitation cinema, so it's just these two dudes wandering through the sewer now, John Carpenter, The Adventures of Milo and Otis and the sexy popcorn bucket. Spoiler Alert: Full spoilers for “Escape From the Bronx”. I mean, if you can actually spoil that movie? “Nothing was really done here… we just killed time and people.”
Join hosts Nathan and Ryan in this gritty episode of Drive-In Double Feature Podcast as they delve into the world of "The Big Racket" (1976). Directed by Enzo G. Castellari, this Italian crime film takes us on a journey through the mean streets where corruption reigns and crime lords operate with impunity. Dive into the film's intense narrative, pulse-pounding action sequences, and the theme of vigilante justice that defines this '70s crime thriller. Explore Castellari's stylish direction and the impact of "The Big Racket" on the poliziotteschi genre. Get ready for a discussion that's both hard-hitting and thought-provoking as we unravel the layers of "The Big Racket."
Movie Meltdown - Episode 618 This episode we discuss Enzo G. Castellari's 1983 post-apocalyptic “classic” Warriors of the Wasteland aka The New Barbarians. And as we strap on our bubble armor, we also mention… As Above so Below, Skinamarink, Please Don't Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain, Once Upon a Deadpool, bad smoke effects, George Eastman, the unnecessary dome, George Miller, extra tubes n' stuff, A Fistful of Dollars, VHS, there's secretly a Matt Damon hiding somewhere in your movie, questionable theme music, the Starscream of the group, three different cameras shooting at three different film speeds, a weird creepy kid, the most awkward shadow sex, floppy shoulders, no backstory, a very hilly area outside of Rome, if Indiana Jones was a horror movie, Fred Savage, wearing camouflage in the 80s and the golf carts from hell. Spoiler Alert: Full spoilers for Warriors of the Wasteland, I mean if you can actually ruin this movie? “Again that's what I love about these movies. Like, half the time none of this shit makes sense… but you just kind of just keep going with it.”
On Episode 13, Pete and Seb discuss a spaghetti western double bill that played at the Lyric theater in September of 1970. FIRST, Lee Van Cleef stars as The Man With Gunsight Eyes in the Gianfranco Parolini classic SABATA. THEN Edd "Kookie" Byrnes sets out to find a lost Confederate treasure with a gang of maniacal marauders in Enzo G. Castellari's 1967 directorial debut PAYMENT IN BLOOD.
Movie Meltdown - Episode 601 Join us as we venture into the grindhouse world of 1990: The Bronx Warriors directed by Enzo G. Castellari. And while we mistakenly get off at the wrong stop on the subway, we also bring up… No Exit, Knock at the Cabin, John Wick: Chapter 4, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, The Long Kiss Goodnight, Italian genre cinema, Vic Morrow, loving Keanu Reeves, where did the horses come from, Sam Raimi, a fistful of funeral, Mark Gregory, a great moment for theater kids, Shane Black, Mad Max, Samuel L. Jackson, looks like a war zone, George Eastman, Ana de Armas, a giant elaborate birthday cake, Geena Davis, Ennio Girolami, action scenes in slo-mo, dark elves, The Warriors, Escape from New York and Fosse! Spoiler Alert: Full spoilers for 1990: The Bronx Warriors, so watch the movie before you listen. “He's definitely very Snake Plisskenny… without the charm.”
Dan and Brennan finally get around Escape from the Bronx, a sequel to episode 15's 1990: The Bronx Warriors. However, they completely confuse this with episode 8's Warriors of the Wasteland without even knowing. That's just what happens when you watch too many Enzo G. Castellari movies. Regardless, does Escape from the Bronx entertain these dongles? Listen to find out! MAD KILLERS! ANXIOUS WOMEN! TWISTED CRIMINAL PLOTS! CHIC INTERIOR DECORATING! PSYCHEDELIC FLASHBACKS! NEEDLESSLY LONG TITLES!! Giallo – plural gialli – so-named for the cover color of pulp crime novels in Italy is a stylish world of psychosis and murder that has existed in some capacity since the early 1960s, but it wasn't until Dario Argento's 1970 classic, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, became a worldwide hit that the giallo fad really took the country by storm. The following year, 1971, was arguably the biggest in the genre's history, with a total of more than 40 films, several of which would become classics. Join super-fan Gabe and relatively apathetic returning guest Patrick Ripoll of Tracks of the Damned and Uptown Song Club as they explore a total of 12 titles in a two-part series. Part one includes Sergio Martino's The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh (Italian: Lo strano vizio della Signora Wardh), Dario Argento's Cat O' Nine Tails (Italian: Il gatto a nove code), Lucio Fulci's Lizard in a Woman's Skin (Italian: Una lucertola con la pelle di donna), Enzo G. Castellari's Cold Eyes of Fear (Italian: Gli occhi freddi della paura), and José María Forqué's Eye of the Hurricane (Spanish: El ojo del huracán). The original plan was to do 6 per episode, but I have COVID-19 and ran out of energy. Noah's shark, Sharks of the corn, The Tingler, Food of the gods part 2 och mycket annan smörja. We're getting Wild in the Streets with Franco Nero in Enzo G. Castellari's 1975 revenge thriller STREET LAW! Starring Nero as an engineer who finds his safety (and masculinity) threatened by a post office robbery and decides to take the (street) law into his own hands. Badly! More nuanced than one might expect, and featuring a rocking soundtrack, there's still plenty of action and - of course - explicit violence. Check it out!

In this episode, we wrap up our series on Westerns. Dustin can't let the conversation close without casting some focus on Spaghetti Westerns which leads us to Enzo G. Castellari's Keoma from 1976. This brings up a podcast favorite topic once more: Franco Nero. Dustin comes out swinging with high praise suggesting the film deserves to be held in much higher regard among Spaghetti Westerns. Jason praises the film's cinematography, particularly focusing on its use of flashbacks. Michael tries to accurately articulate just how detrimental the score was to his experience. But before all that Dustin breaks reality as we know it by dropping some love for Netflix's new Texas Chainsaw Massacre. And so much more! Lee and Leah are joined by two special guests in this episode. Mike and Bobby from The Grindbin Podcast stop by to help dig into the late-period, existential Franco Nero Spaghetti Western "Keoma", directed by Enzo G. Castellari. Things brought up: Is this the last great pasta cowboy picture? "Coolman Keoma"; Why is Jared Leto in this?; Who is the worst Italian on the episode - Leah or Mike?; Lee is old; Italian Donald Sutherland; Keoma is kind of an asshole; and yes, the soundtrack is definitely talked about. The hosts also talk about what they've watched as of late. Come in and listen, and don't mind the folk singer narrating your life. "Keoma" IMDB Check out Mike and Bobby on The Grindbin Podcast.
