E dopo il primo, vuoi non trattare anche l'ultimo squalo? Questa volta, però, siamo in acque tutte italiane, grazie alla regia del bravo Castellari che, pur basandosi dichiaratamente sul capolavoro di Spielberg, realizza un'opera più semplice, a tratti banalotta, ma di mestiere e con personaggi interessanti, anche se un pochino tagliati con l'accetta. L'ultimo squalo va però visto, perché é un titolo con tantissimo cuore, che sfrutta benissimo il basso budget, aguzzando l'ingegno e l'artigianalità che faceva forte l'identità del nostro cinema. Non mancano le scene di tensione e momenti decisamente truculenti. Lo squalo fa paura e il finale non è così consolante come si vorrebbe. Da recuperare, per i nostalgici certamente...ma anche per coloro che si appassionano per il cinema di genere italiano, che ha insegnato e ancora è fonte di ispirazione.

Un cinema che non si fa più, ma non per questo dimenticato. Enzo G. Castellari conosceva bene il suo mestiere e qui lo dimostra ampiamente. Pochi mezzi, ma tante idee e genialità per questa pellicola che, nonostante ora faccia un pochino sorridere, al tempo era un vero e proprio must del cinema di genere. Memorabile Trash, il duro dal cuore d'oro, che combatte in un Bronx apocalittico, dove gangs rivali si fronteggiano e si uccidono senza pietà. Ma forse una scintilla di pace ancora può esserci. Fantastico il cattivissimo Hammer, interpretato da Vic Morrow, il papà di Jennifer Jason Leigh. Quando il lontano futuro è ormai il lontano passato. Un cinema che ha copiato ma anche ispirato gli americani ed i loro blockbuster.

Other Broadway original cast credits include The First, Baby and Stardust. On the West Coast, she was the original Grizabella in Cats, singing “Memory” at the Shubert Theatre in Los Angeles, and also appeared as Lalume in Kismet for Opera Pacific.  She starred in the original West End productions of Elegies for Angels, Punks and Raging Queens and The Slow Drag, as well as  the revival of Dames At Sea, and as the Mother Abbess in the acclaimed production of The Sound of Music at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. Critically acclaimed for playing Annie Oakley in Annie Get Your Gun at London’s Prince of Wales Theatre, for which she earned an Olivier Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical, and for her role as The Old Lady in Robert Carsen’s productions of Candide at La Scala and the Théâtre du Châtelet, she has also won a Helen Hayes Award for her work in Side by Side by Sondheim. She was most recently seen in the US starring as Sally Adams in Call Me Madam at the Goodspeed Opera House, singing the role of The Old Lady in Candide at Chicago’s Ravinia Festival, and co-starring with Joseph Fiennes and Charles Edwards in Happy Days in the Art World at NYU’s Skirball Center in New York. Recently, she played the Italian opera singer Mrs. Castellari in the feature film Hysteria (2013) opposite Maggie Gyllenhaal, Hugh Dancy, and Jonathan Pryce. Continuing our year-long theme covering the history of cinema, today's episode covers films from the 1970s! Following the civil unrest of the 60s, cinema in the 70s took a much more cynical view of the world, exposing the rough edges of humanity with the "gritty realism" that defined movies from that decade. While not every movie from the 70s hated the world in which it was born, the increase in original horror movies that were more grounded in "reality" than reliance on classic monsters, the popularization of disaster movies, and an abundance of vigilantes and rogue cops "cleaning up the streets" was clearly holding up a mirror to reflect the disillusionment of humanity at the time. While a pretty solid chunk of the episode is discussing the representation of vigilantes (as well as the potential impact it continues to have on modern society), we do also spend some time talking about some brighter spots of the decade that don't center around rogue "justice." We also spend some time (not nearly enough time, honestly) discussing a hidden gem that might honestly be one of our favorite films of the decade, Keoma!! As a reminder, these History of Cinema episodes will not be a comprehensive coverage of every single movie that was released that decade. It isn't even necessarily going to be the "top" movies from the decade. Instead, it will be more of a broad discussion of some of the advancements, themes, and highlights from each decade, with the various movies that we watched as examples. This series is also serving as an opportunity for us to fill in some gaps in our own personal film viewings (this series was also inspired, in part, by our Horror Movie Blindspots series we did last year). Genre Grinder is back and focusing on actual genres, following the three part best of 2010s. Well, sort of. This month, Gabe and first-time guest Anne-Marie Taylor chat about shark movies or, more precisely, BAD shark movies. Honestly, it was just easier this way. Not only does Anne-Marie pride herself on knowing all the best in shitty selachimorpha flicks, but the subgenre has become its own little cottage industry on home video and television over the last two decades.    The discussion begins with arguably the quintessential Italian Jaws rip-off, Enzo G. Castellari’s The Last Shark (Italian: L'ultimo squalo; aka: Great White, 1981), then moves on to the silliest official entry in the Jaws canon, Joe Alves’ Jaws 3-D (1983), an early entry in the modern STV shark lottery, David Worth’s meme-tastic Shark Attack 3: Megalodon (2002), and end things with a perfect sampling of the Syfy network’s Z-grade output, Keith Shaw’s Avalanche Sharks (2014). Endzeit – das hat nichts mit irgendwelchen Baumwesen aus Herr der Ringe zu tun! Und Mutant kommt bekanntlich vom lateinischen Begriff „mutare“, was übersetzt „ändern, verwandeln“ bedeutet. Und wo sprach man bekanntlich das schönste Latein? Richtig – im alten Rom und heutigen Italien. Und wo fühlen sich Mutanten am aller-aller-wohlsten? Richtig- in der Endzeit. Ihr seht also, die Logik lässt sich nicht bestechen: Italien und Endzeit gehören zusammen, wie Butter und Brot, Popeye und Spinat, Mad Max und die Donnerkuppel. Diesem Naturgesetz mussten sich letzten Endes auch die Protagonisten von Trash-O-Meter beugen und haben sich über mehrere Tage eine erlesene Auswahl an italienischen Endzeitfilmen aus den 80er Jahren einverleibt. Vermutlich sind dabei auch Teile Ihrer Gehirne mutiert, aber damit wären sie ja gut auf ein zukünftiges Leben in der Endzeit vorbereitet. First-up, they look at the mostly forgotten slow-burn from Romolo Guerrieri, "The Police Serve the Citizens?" (1973). Then they check out the action-packed Enzo G. Castellari film, "The Heroin Busters" (1977). Much of the talk of the latter surrounds Fabio Testi's amazing wardrobe and how the British have sex. Also: does your motorcycle have airbags? This week, we discuss two men who started off as prominent assistant directors (and in the case of the latter, onscreen bit player), later to move on to carve a niche all their own in the annals of Italian cult cinema! Michele Soavi worked his way through the Italian film industry, first as an onscreen actor in minor roles for the likes of Fulci, Castellari, Deodato, Cozzi, D'Amato and even Lamberto Bava himself, before becoming AD on several Argento, Bava and D'Amato affairs.  But it was a documentary on Dario Argento that brought him into the directorial seat, from which he'd go on to create four of the most distinctive and visual horror films of the late 80's and early 90's! Lamberto Bava would cut his teeth directing second unit and serving as AD on his famed father's productions for over a decade, also putting in time under the likes of Dario Argento and Ruggero Deodato along the way before graduating to the director's chair on Shock (alongside his father), Macabre and the justly feted Blade in the Dark.   Working in tandem with Dario Argento, Bava would make his name with the Demons films, putting out a few more notably odd efforts like Delirium, Blastfighter and Monster Shark before moving into telefilms such as the excellent Brivido Giallo series and the Alta Tensione series.  And let's not forget Body Puzzle... Pasta-pocalypse time on The Bloody Pit! I am joined once again by Troy and Jeff to talk about a piece of Italian sleaze and this time we finally delve into the world of MAD MAX/THE ROAD WARRIOR rip offs. Director Enzo Castellari was a veteran of low budget genre cinema by the early 80's and he knew how to stretch a dollar to make things work. When he made this film he was in the middle of a string of such sci-fi adventures that owed as much to the dystopian worlds of Miller's Mad Max as they did to Carpenter's dark future from ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK. All these influences swirl around mixed with a standard Western plot, silly hair styles, ridiculous cars, silly weapons and dangerous stunt work to create a fun, bizarre and occasionally sadistic ride. The fact that the amazing Fred Williamson is on hand to keep the grins flowing is only part of the entertainment on view. After all - we have to find a way to survive the end of civilization and start over again, right? Or are we just looking for victory? Don't ask Nadir. After a brief discussion of the media that we've been checking out lately, your Three Stooges dive into a detailed breakdown of THE NEW BARBARIANS. We examine the odd design and talk about how the western story template makes for a good jumping off point for an action tale. We discuss the cast, the clever ways the production dealt with budgetary issues and the nepotism that shows up in every Castellari film. We spend some time on the mighty George Eastman (a.k.a. Luigi Montefiori) and his impressive career and marvel at the talents of Williamson as he brightens the movie in ways only he can manage. We get a kick out of analyzing the strange sexual politics of the story as Troy points out a way that this film is unique among it's post-apocalyptic brethren. And of course, we smile and laugh at the insane gunfights, slow motion car crashes and exploding dummies along the way. Man - I Love exploding dummies! Truly, a good time was had by all. Marked by extreme violence, gorgeous women, corrupt politicians and police and stylish if dangerous mobsters with a code of ethics all their own, the Italian crime film surpassed its Stateside, UK and French forebears by amping up the action, the body count, the speed and explosiveness of it all.  Packed to the gills with wild car chases, stunt-filled shootouts on crowded streets and abandoned industrial complexes and backroom double dealings, there is quite literally nothing else like them in cinema! With directors (Lenzi, Damiani, DiLeo, Massi, Castellari, Sollima) and stars specializing in and rising to fame mainly based on their efforts herein (Maurizio Merli, Thomas Milian, Gian Maria Volante, Luc Merenda, Fabio Testi) and others establishing deep roots in the genre (Martin Balsam, Adolfo Celi, John Saxon, Telly Savalas, Henry Silva), the Italian crime film has finally achieved reappraisal late in the DVD era, with many of its key efforts only now making their way to domestic shores. It's comics meets the post apocalypse as we welcome creator/writer Ed Brisson (Sheltered, Cluster, The Violent) to the show to talk about his career, influences and determination to get into the world of comic books. We discuss his beginnings as an indie filmmaker, writing a "Sons of Anarchy" spin-off, getting to live every comics fan dream of scripting Batman, and so much more! Take a journey with us into the futuristic 1990(!) world of New York where gangs roam the wasteland that is the Bronx as "Trash" (Mark Gregory) and his gang have to protect a misplaced heiress from other gangs and the malicious cop sent to bring her back to the safety of Manhattan.
