Ernest P. Worrell is just a handyman on holiday in Hollywood... Until he's mistaken for a private eye and ends up chasing a missing fur coat tied to a long-lost starlet. With a plucky influencer by his side, Ernest bumbles through Tinseltown, dodging danger, stirring up trouble, and uncovering secrets. The tenth episode of our special retrospective 20th season looks back to the awesome movie year of 1987 with the third of Jason's three picks, family comedy Ernest Goes to Camp. Directed and co-written by John Cherry and starring Jim Varney, Victoria Racimo, Lyle Alzado, Iron Eyes Cody and John Vernon, Ernest Goes to Camp is the first of nine feature films based on Varney's popular Ernest P. Worrell character. The contemporary reviews quoted in this episode come from Caryn James in The New York Times (https://www.nytimes.com/1987/05/23/movies/film-ernest-goes-to-camp-a-comedy.html), Johanna Steinmetz in the Chicago Tribune (https://www.chicagotribune.com/1987/05/26/90-minutes-seems-like-life-sentence-at-ernests-camp/), and Hal Hinson in The Washington Post (https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/style/longterm/movies/videos/ernestgoestocamppghinson_a0c96a.htm).Visit https://www.awesomemovieyear.com for more info about the show.Make sure to like Awesome Movie Year on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/awesomemovieyear and follow us on Twitter @AwesomemoviepodYou can find Jason online at http://goforjason.com/, on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/JHarrisComedy/, on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/jasonharriscomedy/ and on Twitter @JHarrisComedyYou can find Josh online at http://joshbellhateseverything.com/, on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/joshbellhateseverything/ and on Twitter @signalbleedYou can find our producer David Rosen's Piecing It Together Podcast at https://www.piecingpod.com, on Twitter at

The final theatrical release revolving around Ernest P. Worrell, Ernest Rides Again (1993) sees Jim Varney's character go out with a whimper. In this film, Ernest rides around town on a loose cannon as he works with his uncharismatic friend to find the Crown Jewels! While the movie was a resounding failure following the successful themes of Camp, Christmas, Jail, and Halloween, this wouldn't be the end of Ernest, as he would have many more direct-to-video releases!
Hope everyone enjoyed their holiday break! Joe and Adam are back and ready to go to summer camp! Not really, but they are ready to discuss the "classic" movie, Ernest Goes to Camp (1987)! Jim Varney's first true Ernest P. Worrell film, this movie has a little bit of everything: snapping turtles, cultural appropriation (Iron Eyes Cody!), a mean businessman, and Jim Varney boxing a kangaroo! Okay, the last one doesn't really happen, but apparently A.I. can produce it...
Ernest Saves Christmas (1988) – A Hilarious Holiday Classic!Get ready for laughs, chaos, and heartwarming holiday cheer as we dive into Ernest Saves Christmas! Starring the iconic Jim Varney as the lovable and bumbling Ernest P. Worrell, this 1988 Christmas comedy is a must-watch for fans of slapstick humor and nostalgic family films. In this festive adventure, Ernest teams up with the real Santa Claus (Douglas Seale) to save Christmas. With Santa on a mission to find his successor, a children's TV host named Joe Carruthers, things take a wacky turn when Santa's magical sack is stolen! Add in a rebellious teen, Harmony Starr (Noelle Parker), and plenty of Ernest's hilarious antics, and you've got a holiday movie filled with fun and heart.✨ Why You Should Watch:Laugh-out-loud moments with Ernest's over-the-top disguises and slapstick comedy.A heartfelt story about belief, redemption, and the magic of Christmas.Perfect for fans of classic holiday movies and family-friendly comedies.
As Jim Varney once said, "This movie is weird!" Dr. Otto, a mysterious villain with a hand attached to the top of his head, uses his "gloom beam" to attack financial institutions all across the world! His arch nemesis, Lance Sterling, hopes to thwart his plan by solving the riddle! Along the way, Lance and his partner, Doris, must overcome Rudd Hardtack (leader of a child militia), Jack O'Cockney (pirate), Auntie Nelda (evil old woman), and Guy Dandy (wealthy playboy). Dr. Otto and the Riddle of the Gloom Beam (1985) stars Jim Varney, who portrays all of the evil characters in this movie!
Dan Delgado, host of The Industry podcast, and Allan sealed their fate on the last Christmas episode of Cinema Shame by admitting they hadn't seen Ernest Saves Christmas. So, we watched Ernest Saves Christmas, know what I mean? Follow us on Bsky @cinemashame.bsky.social and on Instagram @CinemaShamePodcast.
It's that most wonderful time of the year so it goes without saying that we might treat ourselves to a little bit of Christmas film comfort food from our childhoods. This movie might present the biggest challenge in maintaining objectivity outside of our fragile emotions because we're not just talking about any family comedy fare, we're talking about Ernest P. Worrell. We must confess that we are Jim Varney sickos. We are devout apologists for the late actor and we also happen to be from Nashville, TN where Jim Varney launched the Ernest character into national acclaim. Here in Purity country, we grew up watching Ernest make his funny expressions back when we didn't know what autism and ADHD truly were. So we're blasting backshots onto our past as we discuss one of Ernest's most lucrative projects, the 1988 Christmas comedy “ERNEST SAVES CHRISTMAS” also starring Douglas Seale, Noelle Parker, Gailard Sartain and Bill Byrge. Santa Claus needs a replacement, no it's not Ernest but Santa might need Ernest's help to save the future of Christmas. Of course Vern is in this movie. Vern is us. Vern is you. KnowwhatImean? I mean grotesque trolls take over the world? Is this movie funny to anyone who does not appreciate the subtle art of the fart joke? Where does it fall on the newly resurrected spooky scale? The character of Ernest P. Worrell finally made the leap from TV commercials to the silver screen in 1987 with Ernest Goes to Camp. Perhaps unsurprisingly, this movie found a bigger audience on home video than the box office. We're going back to a podcast favorite, as we watch yet another Ernest P. Worrell adventure. This time, we're watching the misguided, tone deaf, and lazy entry known as Ernest Goes to Africa. Join us as we discuss the lazy jokes, the fact that there's a death count in an Ernest movie, and the unfortunate stereotypes. We also pitch our own version of problematic Ernest movies. No one wanted to come back and watch the finale of The Muppets Mayhem with us. That doesn't mean anything, does it? It does. It means we lose our way into Two And A Half Men, The Fast And The Furious, directing extras, Morphine (the band), Snake Eyes (the G.I. Joe) and... Ernest P. Worrell? It also means this show is over and maybe that's not as much of a relief as you and all of our guests thought it would be.
On episode 17 on the podcast we talked about the 90's sketch comedy classic, In Living Color, Earthworm Jim, Aladdin's Castle, Ernest P. Wes and Nick review this classic Ernest P. Worrell tale of him messing crap up and helping a weird Santa Clause find a successor. Plot:Ernest P. Worell, a sweet but silly taxi driver who at times suffers delusions of grandeur, has just chauffeured a rather extraordinary fare: "His Great Red Oneness, the Claus" himself. It seems Santa hasn't got the magic for another Christmas season, and has come to Orlando, Florida for Joe Carruthers, the man he has chosen as his successor. But things quickly begin to unravel, thanks to Joe's meddling agent and Santa's increasingly unreliable memory. Incredibly, dimwitted Ernest soon becomes Santa's only hope! Joining forces with a young runaway named "Harmony Star", Ernest rushes to save the holidays as we know them.Support the show:

Ernest Scared Stupid is without a doubt easy to love on every level. Is it dumb? Yes. Is it childish? Of course. Are there plot holes? Sure. But even with all it's "faults" it's quite possibly the perfect gateway movie to get young cinephiles into the horror genre. Jim Varney as Ernest P. Worrell is a delightful living Loony Tune character, the world lost one of the good ones too soon and we miss him dearly. Do yourself a favor and start making this film a family holiday tradition. The boys dive into the oeuvre of writer Kevin Williamson, well, his non-Scream, non-TV, non-werewolf related oeuvre that is. 1997's ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer', is exactly what you'd expect from a 90's teen slasher, and the behind-the-scenes-at-Miramax grossness is also about what you'd expect. I guess the killer dressing in the vein of fishing Ernest P. Worrell was a new twist though…
Hey Vern, Ernest is back and believe it or not, he's local! Jim Varney's character of Ernest has been in movies, had his own television series, and was a spokesperson for several companies during tv spots. In Alex's hometown, "Ernest" made several appearances to make commercials for a local car dealership. These commercials have proven to be elusive. Thank to Alex's brother, Derek, finding a lot of them we now share our final "We'll Be Right Back" episode of the season featuring Ernest P Worrell.
