After a couple weeks off due to illnesses running through our houses, we're back and better than ever. Youth sports, politics, and home maintenance are on the agenda this week. We also discuss our new nemesis, Shakira. Murder Party: Some loser knob shows up at a "Murder Party" that he knows nothing about with people he's never met, but the guy is a lonely sad-sack who just wants a friend. Turns out, the party is put on by a bunch of artist douchebags who are actually looking to murder someone in an "artistic" manner. Who dies? Unfortunately not the entire cast, only most of them. CarousHell final grade: Steve This one is on the bottom end of meh. I could watch it again. I won't, but I could. There is humor there, if you're paying attention. Costume effects were good. A very average movie, exceeding the below average budget. 2.17/5.0 Brandon To quote the movie, "Banal. Jejune. The artistic representation of a dial tone." Not enough humor or action in the first 85% of the movie to make it worth working through to get to the end bit. Steve says there is some humor there, but I don't want to pay close enough attention to get it. 1.47/5.0 1.5/5.0 Cocktail of the Week: Skeleton Key 1 1/4 oz Bourbon 3/4 oz Elderflower Liqueur 1/2 oz Fresh-Squeezed Lemon Juice 1 TBSP Angostura Bitters Ginger Beer Angostura Bitters Comebine all non-ginger beer ingredients in a cocktail shaker. Shake to chill and combine. Serve over rocks in a Collins glass. Drizzle bitters over the top to create dripping blood effect. Cocktail Grade: Not a bad cocktail, but nothing to write home about. Adding a little more lemon juice to subsequent rounds and stirring the bitters in before drinking made it more palatable. Overall, a straight sour or Mule cocktail is probably preferable to combining the two. 3.5/5 ------------------ Contact us with feedback or cocktail/movie recommendations to: boozeandbmovies@gmail.com X: @boozeandbmovies Instagram: @boozeandbmovies Threads: @boozeandbmovies www.facebook.com/boozeandbmovies --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/boozeandbmovies/support

For the entire interview transcript, please click here. In this episode of Successful Musicians, we are joined by Will and Brooke Blair, a brother duo known for their work in the world of film and TV scoring. They share their journey, offer practical advice for musicians, and discuss how they've adapted to the fast-paced demands of the industry. They are long-term collaborators with director Jeremy Saulnier, scoring his first feature, “Murder Party,” which won the Slamdance 2007 Audience Award. Brooke and Will Blair's music enhances the emotional and narrative depth of the projects they work on, making them a sought-after duo in the industry. What You'll Learn The Blair brothers' unique journey into the film and TV scoring world. How scoring for different genres pushes them creatively and keeps their work fresh. The importance of collaboration and building strong relationships in the industry. Practical advice for musicians working under tight deadlines. Things We Discussed Will and Brooke emphasize the importance of mastering your tools when working in film and television scoring. Deadlines are tight, and musicians need to be fast, efficient, and decisive. Brooke advises musicians to get better at their tools, whether it's recording, mixing, or any other technical aspect of music production. In addition, the brothers share valuable advice on maintaining a healthy work-life balance. After years of experience, they've learned the importance of setting boundaries and making time for family, even in a demanding field like film composition. Will and Brooke emphasize that it's not about working long hours—it's about making the hours you work count. Whether it's taking a break to hike with family or simply stepping away from the project for a while, this balance can help keep creativity flowing. Often, solutions to creative problems come when you're not actively thinking about them. On this episode, the last film in my September Sleeper series is Murder Party (2007). This horror comedy is the directorial debut from Jeremy Saulnier (Blue Ruin, Green Room, Rebel Ridge) that has an lonely guy attending a Halloween murder party and unbeknownst to him, he is the intended murder victim for real. Full of gore, full of laughs and one that should be a must watch every Halloween. Come with me to the party, I'll keep it short and spoiler free with some candy corn if you like that treat. The artist on my podcast playlist is Misfits. Game Over! tee in profile pic by Dethink Tees. https://dethink.bigcartel.com/product/game-over-man-game-over
Against all better judgment, David refuses to give up on Ian!Yes, the guys are back to review another new movie that the persistent and persuasive Mr. Fowlie hopes will make a believer out of our resident sourpuss.Unfortunately, the film at hand is the latest Netflix actioner, Rebel Ridge! Aaron Pierre stars as a stoic martial arts badass whose bike trip through Redneckville becomes a week-long gauntlet of extortion, corruption, revenge, and more tough-guy glowering than a thousand furrowed brows. It's not surprising that Ian didn't respond to this one; what is shocking is that Rebel Ridge was directed by one of his favorite filmmakers, Jeremy Saulnier Blue Ruin, Green Room). The new movie represents a departure for the indie visionary, whose blood-drenched, off-the-wall crime operas made him one of the new century's most exciting young voices. Comparatively squeaky clean in its presentation, Rebel Ridge is so lacking in Saulnier's hallmarks as to be more of a dare than a sensical film.Watch as the guys talk Rambo, rural Internet, "factoid screenwriting", and the inherent magical properties of coconut water!Subscribe, like, and comment to the Kicking the Seat YouTube channel, and check out kickseat.com for multiple movie podcasts each week!Show LinksWatch the Rebel Ridge trailer.Follow David Fowlie's film criticism at Keeping It Reel.Plus! From the warehouse of burnt werewolves comes the performance art atrocity that would make Andy Warhol squeamish. That's right, we are talking about the low budget lovely that is 2007's Murder Party! When a lonely man on Halloween finds an invitation to a murder party little did he know he would be the dismember of honor, to his own death! Lewis, Cecilia and Rachele jump behind the microphones for an hour of screen entertainment with Nope, Edward and Isabella (which was filmed in Albany, Western Australia during the pandemic), The Forgiven and Murder Party. Lewis squeezed in a quick look at The Sandman before we disappear for another week.
Settle in for another Screen Watching with the usual smart nonsense re: all things watching and screen. There are a batch of interesting TV and movies to review this week, but stick around for our MIDDLE BIT this week where Dan and SImon engage in the 2022 Screen Watching Movie Remake Pitch session. Each try to get the other to greenlight their idea for movie remakes. It's a ridiculous, fun chat.
Le film Murder Party sort en Australie prochainement. Voici l'interview de son réalisateur, Nicolas Pleskof.

In this week's episode, it's an EMT pick! Thank you so much to listener Derek who won the contest in our "Firestarter" episode and chose a real doozy of a film-- the 1988 Satanic cult movie "Hack-O-Lantern." Believe me when I say that this movie has it all: heavy metal, boobs, Satanism, a bathroom with carpet in it which is inherently also very evil, horny adult teens, weird stuff at the rec center, boobs, terrible fake guitar playing in the world's saddest jerkoff fantasy, Levi's cords, creepy grandpas, Coors Light, inept police work, barn-based occult rituals, did we mention boobs? There are a ton of them. Halloween is THE BEST. You may enjoy Episode 52- Halloween III: Season of the Witch," Episode 68- "Trick r Treat," Episode 105- "Murder Party," Episode 192- "Night of the Demons," Episode 197- "Terrifier," Episode 200- "Trick or Treat," Episode 366- "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" and really so many more. Welcome to Goddard in the World's Season One Finale! We are so excited to end the season with an incredible writer and guest Sam Rebelein. Sam Rebelein is a graduate of the MFA in Creative Writing program at Goddard College. His work has previously appeared in Bourbon Penn, Planet Scumm, Shimmer, Ellen Datlow's Best Horror of the Year, and elsewhere. He lives in Poughkeepsie, NY and will be starting a PhD at Texas Tech University in 2021 focusing in English Literature and Film, specifically Horror and Trauma Studies. As an only child, Sam grew up playing by himself and making up stories. We talked to him about how his childhood homes from Minnesota to Ohio to the Hudson Valley influenced his storytelling interests, from landscapes where you can see the weather coming three days away, to woods which are full of power, mystery, and claustrophobia. Reflecting upon why interest in the horror genre demands an explanation, Sam talks about horror as a safe environment to experience fear and address it, and how horror reflects anxieties that are already present in the storytellers and audience, “Horror felt like the one area where stories would be honest about there being something out there or people being terrible…there's something familiar and cozy about it if you already have it in your head.” Sam started out writing comedy, sketch and theater at Vassar and then pivoted to horror, “both genres depend on catharsis, build up and tension…you're geared up to have some kind of release whether it's a laugh or startling.” At Goddard, Sam wrote a collection of short horror stories which is currently being represented and shopped around for publication. “Goddard helped me develop my taste and vibe, I found my voice.” Sam will be starting a PhD program at Texas Tech University in fall 2021, where he hopes to study grief and trauma in horror, how it's manifested and how it can be utilized. We talk about some movies that illustrate these concepts (spoiler warning for The Babadook!). Check out (and buy!) all of Sam's current and forthcoming publications at: https://www.srebelein.com/work Follow Sam on Twitter: @HillaryScruff Recommendations: Books: R.L.
