“Why I was different from all the other boys in my town I cannot tell you. I was simply born with the gift of vision.” – ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGERIs there any better example of the American Dream than Arnold Schwarzenegger? What does it take to make your vision a reality? How do you cultivate iron focus to overcome any obstacle and realize your dreams? On the publication of Arnold Schwarzenegger's limited edition two-volume book published by TASCHEN, we sat down with Senior Editor and Writer Dian Hansen to discuss Schwarzenegger's life, accomplishments, and history of unforgettable performances. The book has been a decade-long collaborative process and along with portraits by leading photographers Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz, Robert Mapplethorpe, Herb Ritts, Francesco Scavullo, and Andy Warhol, it is also filled with photos from Arnold's private archive and exclusive interviews. Dian's other works include The Art of Pin-up, Masterpieces of Fantasy Art, and The Fantastic Worlds of Frank Frazetta."As Arnold Schwarzenegger says, 'We don't have Republican air. We don't have Democrat water. We all breathe the same air. We all have the same water. It's happening to all of us, and it's happening all over the world. And if we just continue to ignore it so that we can put some money in our pockets, or we can get reelected, what are we leaving for the future?' And you know, his devotion to children and to helping children makes him look at it from a different perspective. He's not one of these heartless old politicians who's just like, well, as long as it doesn't happen while I'm alive, I'm going to get rich off of this. He is always thinking of the next generations. He is always thinking of what he is going to be able to hand down."www.taschen.com/en/limited-editions/film/03105/arnold-collector-s-editionwww.schwarzenegger.comwww.creativeprocess.infowww.oneplanetpodcast.orgIG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcastImages courtesy of Taschen. He was born on July 30th, 1947. And most of us today don't have any understanding or relationship to what Europe was like right after World War II. The winter of 1946/1947 in Austria was the most brutal in decades. The people already had too little food. They were in an occupied country. The summer potato crops failed. As Arnold has said, his mother had to go from farm to farm to farm, begging for food to be able to feed her children. His father, like all the men in the village, was defeated by the war. I mean, they were not just defeated by their side losing, but realizing what their side had stood for, that they were the bad guys. And he saw them all physically, emotionally, intellectually defeated and taking it out on their wives and children, that he was beaten and his mother was beaten. All the neighbor kids were beaten, and they were beaten into a kind of placid defeat. And he alone would not accept that. He could not see that life for himself. And he was, as a child, searching for ways to get out of that. And bodybuilding became that when he learned about bodybuilding as a very poor boy. They lived on the top floor of a house. They had no plumbing. They all bathed once a week in the same tub in the kitchen. And his brother and he had to bring the water in. His mother heated it, and they took baths one by one. Mother first, father second, older brother third, Arnold last in the tub of dirty water. And so he wanted out of that. And as a poor boy, he had nothing but his body to work with. That was it. There was not going to be any college. There was not going to be any of that. There was going to be some kind of menial job, or he could use what he had - his body - to get him out of there."www.taschen.com/en/limited-editions/film/03105/arnold-collector-s-editionwww.schwarzenegger.comwww.creativeprocess.infowww.oneplanetpodcast.orgIG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcastImages courtesy of Taschen. You don't get his humor. The first time I went to Arnold's house, I saw that this man is the greatest storyteller, the greatest entertainer ever.He is funny, he is witty, he is quick. He can tell a story like no one else, and not just tell it, he would act it out. He would get up and stomp around and make noises with his mouth. He told me a simple story about a woman in the gym who was not working out, who was just sitting on a bench and talking on the phone to her friend and eating a bag of potato chips. And he was able to replicate the sound of eating potato chips just with his mouth. He is underappreciated. I guess that's what it is. And as I started going through his archive, I saw that there are certain photographs that show him and his facial expressions like none other. And those photographs are always when he is interacting with children or interacting with animals and all pretense drops away. His face just lights up. It is real, it is genuine, it is open. And that's something that I tried to include as much as possible, particularly in the small book that is more personal, to show that human, affectionate, warm side of Arnold."www.taschen.com/en/limited-editions/film/03105/arnold-collector-s-editionwww.schwarzenegger.comwww.creativeprocess.infowww.oneplanetpodcast.orgIG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcastImages courtesy of Taschen. He told me that he had always been interested in the environment. He grew up being very cautious about everything. You don't waste water, you don't waste power, all these things as a poor child. "Benedikt Taschen, like myself, like Arnold, is a man without formal education. Benedikt started his business when he was 18 years old and opened a comic book store. He had been buying and selling trading comic books since the age of 15. He made the money himself to open a comic book store and then went into publishing right after that. And I said, 'Benedikt, when did you have time to go to college?' And he said, 'There was no time. I did not go.' And so people are tempted to call people like Benedikt, to call people like Arnold, to call people like me, self-made. But we are obviously not self-made. We are determined, and we use our determination to bring other people into our dream and our motivation to accomplish what we want. And so Taschen sees in Arnold himself and his own determination he sees in me, himself, and his determination. And so we all come together in that, you know, let's celebrate somebody that most people would not imagine was an art book subject. This has been Taschen all along. Oh, they make sex books. You know, that's not art. Well, Benedikt Taschen said to me at the time when he hired me, and he was trying to hire me since 1994, I said, 'Well, you know, I made porn magazines. Am I going to have to change everything I do to make art books?' And he said, no.He said, 'I'm hiring you because I like what you do. We make good books. We put good art in our books. We put good sex material in our books. We do not put bad art in our books. We do not put bad sex material in our books. We do it good, and then it's art. And that is what we have done all along.' News: In just a few days guests will be walking around on Buena Vista Street again! On November 19th, the front part of Disney California Adventure will be open and operate as an extended part of Downtown Disney. All of Buena Vista Street from the front gates to the Carthay Circle Theater, and from Award Wieners on Hollywood Boulevard to Smokejumpers Grill in Condor Flats will be open to guests. – https://twitter.com/Disneyland/status/1324416422664196096 The Carthay Circle Lounge will be open with Buena Vista Street and will offer a new menu. The new options include smaller plated featuring Mediterranean-California light types of food. Among the items are a Carthay shrimp roll, harissa-roasted lamb, soy-glazed salmon, and more. Pasta and chicken skewers are some of the options for kids. All dining will be outdoors. The full menu can be seen on the Disneyland App. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2020/11/05/carthay-circle-to-offer-new-menu-and-alfresco-dining-upon-reopening-at-disneyland-resort/ and https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2020/11/05/news-full-menu-for-carthay-circle-lounge-released-on-disneyland-app/ In a bit of a surprise, Award Wieners on Hollywood Boulevard in DCA will be reopening with Buena Vista Street on November 19th. The location, best known for hot dogs and corn dogs, will have a new menu. A hotdog and corn dog are still on the menu joined by a cheddar cheese stick and apple pie funnel cake fries! Some adult beverages will also be offered. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2020/11/09/award-wieners-to-reopen-with-buena-vista-street-at-disneys-california-adventure/ and https://dlnewstoday.com/2020/11/corn-dog-castle-corn-dogs-and-more-will-be-offered-at-award-wieners-for-the-reopening-of-buena-vista-street-at-disney-california-adventure/ The Red Car Trolley made an appearance on Buena Vista Street last week, and then disappeared again as work started on what is most likely the electric charging which is built into the street at the station. The Trolley is expected to return as a photo op when this section of the park opens on November 19th. – https://www.micechat.com/274668-disneyland-update-red-car-parking-and-partial-reopening/ Even with all the excitement of more things opening, Disney has announced another wave of furloughs. This time, it includes executive, salaried, and hourly workers. Ken Potrock, the President of the Disneyland Resort sent the letter to cast members explaining how difficult this decision is and they hope to get things open and cast members back to work as soon as possible. – https://www.ocregister.com/2020/11/09/disneyland-announces-additional-furloughs-as-state-guidelines-leave-theme-park-in-limbo/ The Orange County Register posed an interesting question to readers this week: would you be willing to take a rapid COVID-19 test to enter the theme parks? Universal Studios and Six Flags have asked this question in surveys to potential guests. They are trying to determine if a rapid test that could be completed in as little as 15 minutes would make potential guests feel safer in the parks, almost ruling out that any guest would have COVID-19 in the parks after the tests would be completed. – https://t.co/c0MGSWp9Me The face masks that Disney has been selling online and in the parks and shops have received a price increase from $6 each to $9.99 each. The price has not increased at Disneyland just yet, so if you have been eyeing up a Disney mask, now would be a good time to buy before the price could go up. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2020/11/04/mask-price-increases-have-not-reached-disneyland-resort-yet/ Holiday merchandise is coming in hot and heavy at the moment. New items like a gingerbread character ornament set, Christmas snack bracelets, beanies, spirit jerseys, and a new one – underwear! The underwear features Wreck-it-Ralph, Disneyland, Kevin from Up, and Disney emoji. Each pair is $19.99. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2020/11/05/whats-new-at-downtown-disney-red-trolley-sighting-snowman-candy-apples-and-so-many-christmas-pins/ and https://dlnewstoday.com/2020/11/photos-new-monsters-inc-scream-canister-water-bottles-roll-into-disneyland-resort/ One of the three Disneyland Hotels will have a partial re-opening on December 6th! The Disney Vacation Club Villas at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, announced in a letter sent to DVC members, will be open for booking. The rest of the hotel, along with the Disneyland Hotel and Paradise Pier Hotel, will remain closed for the foreseeable future. – https://www.ocregister.com/2020/11/09/disneyland-to-reopen-disney-vacation-club-villas-in-time-for-winter-holidays/ D23 is having a massive week of events from November 16th through the 20th, celebrating Fantastic Worlds. New seasonal and unique flavors were announced by the ice cream shop in Downtown Disney. These include a sweet potato casserole with maple pecans, a roasted peach and sage cornbread stuffing, a cranberry juniper sorbet, and finally a salted caramel thanksgiving turkey. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2020/11/06/say-what-theres-turkey-flavored-ice-cream-in-downtown-disney/ A very touching animated short was released online this week to celebrate the 40 year partnership with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Before we come back with a full fall slate of episodes, we want to share this episode of Your Attention Please from Hulu and IHeartRadio. In 2019, Tomi Adeyemi followed up her best-selling debut novel, Children of Blood and Bone, with another installment in the Legacy of Orïsha series, Children of Virtue and Vengeance. Readers have fallen in love with Adeyemi's stories, which are magical and transporting but also so resonant in today's world. In this episode, Kimberly chats with Tomi about believing your dreams are possible, having the right people on your team, and bad spinoffs. And, naturally, Tomi has all the best metaphors for life. It’s no secret that the AudioFile team loves author Philip Pullman and the worlds he built in the HIS DARK MATERIALS trilogy about Lyra Belaqua, the clever young protagonist we first met in THE GOLDEN COMPASS. Last year, we were fortunate enough to speak with the creative team behind the full-cast production of THE GOLDEN COMPASS, a landmark in the audiobook world. Host Jo Reed speaks with Orli Moscowitz, Penguin Random House executive producer; Garrick Hagon, the director of the first trilogy and the voice of Lee Scoresby; and Tim Ditlow, the publisher of Listening Library who produced the unabridged multicast recording of the original. This fall, THE SECRET COMMONWEALTH, the second book Pullman’s new BOOK OF DUST trilogy narrated by Michael Sheen, was published, and HBO debuted its new series based on HIS DARK MATERIALS, so we thought it was the perfect time to revisit Pullman’s worlds and our interview and share it with Behind the Mic listeners. CALLING ALPHA CONTROL: BILL HEDGES EPISODE SYNOPSIS: We welcome Lost in Space Prop & Miniature Replicator, Writer, Researcher & Independent Film Studio Owner; Mr. Bill Hedges. Bill is well known in the LIS fan community for his detailed & screen accurate recreations of classic LIS props & sets, many of which have been realized using original components & studio blueprints from the series. As a kid, Bill fell in love with LIS when it premiered in the Fall of 1965 during its prime-time broadcast run. He collected most all the merchandise that was available to a fan in those years, like the classic Aurora model kits, 'ViewMaster' disks & 'Topps' trading cards. After the show was canceled Bill lived in an area where it wasn’t available in syndication, but his interest in the LIS never wavered. It was only after the internet opened up & connected a whole world of LIS fandom that that Bill started realizing his childhood dream of recreating some of the Fantastic Worlds that Irwin Allen created over 50 years ago. What began with collecting a few pieces of control panels from the original sets, eventually led to building a realistic Jupiter 2 interior, buying an old downtown movie theater and renovating that into a working film studio, complete with partial J2 exterior & alien landscape. Thus, was born Cosmic Films Studio. BILL’S BIO: Mr. Hedges lives in Lyons, Nebraska, which is about 70 miles North of Omaha. He grew up on a farm and like a lot of kids in that era was fascinated with the Space Program, Astronomy, Electronics & Science Fiction. LIS checked off all those boxes & even though he loved the show’s stories, it was the hardware & Special Effects that really caught his imagination. For High School graduation his parents gave him a Super 8 movie camera, which he used to pursue the hobby of amateur filmmaking. Along the way, he managed to collect a slew of production materials from LIS including, blueprints, maps, storyboards & scripts. His research & knowledge allowed him to write several features for Flint Mitchell’s famous Lost in Space Encyclopedia, which is still considered an invaluable resource on the technical aspects of the series. After retiring from his career with the US Postal Service & establishing Cosmic Films Studio, he’s fully devoted himself to movie-making in all its aspects from fabricating sets, modeling, writing scripts, filming & post-production. His passion has blossomed into a remarkable story that includes his own series of sci-fi fantasy films about a ‘Cosmic Cat’ named Penny. We’re going to speak with Bill today about his love for & research about LIS, his remarkable recreations of sets, props & miniatures AND get a peek inside the world of Cosmic Films Studio, so sit back & enjoy this compelling interview with the amazing Mr. Bill Hedges. Today we're looking at that giant new theme park Universal Orlando doesn't want you to know they're building. It's located a few miles south of the current resort, near the Orange County Convention Center. We're calling it the 4th gate because Universal has called Volcano Bay their 3rd gate, so while this is technically their 3rd THEME PARK in Orlando, it's their 4th GATE. We're going over technical details like permits filed for new roads, parking lots and water drainage, but also exploring rumors for new ride systems and exciting properties to fill out this new theme park.
