VYS0029 | If There's Something Strange In Your Neighbourhood - Vayse to Face to Face with Field Lines Cartographer and Bob Freeman: Halloween 2023 - Show Notes Four middle-aged men bravely join forces to confront ancient evils, spooks, spectres and ghosts - ok, so, Vayse did Ghostbusters last Halloween but instead, this year, Hine and Buckley welcome back master of the liminal soundscape, Field Lines Cartographer and the Occult Detective himself, Bob Freeman to sit around the virtual camp fire as they each tell a ghost story from their home towns. FLC tells a tale of Warwickshire plague pits and feelings of stalking dread in the dark, Hine recounts a gruesome murder in Preston which led to bloody revenge from beyond the grave, Bob spins a classic American yarn of haunted houses in the deep, dark woods of rural Indiana and Buckley tells of the spirit of a young boy who haunts the picturesque town of Great Corby bringing those who encounter him great fortune followed by certain death. The conversation also turns to whether ghosts are actually, really all that scary, the differences between ghost stories in the UK and the US, the nature of reality itself (of course, this is Vayse)... and digitally transported flies... (Recorded 10 October 2023) Thanks again to Keith for the show notes and thanks to everyone for listening - please tell a friend (or benignly neutral acquaintance) and ask them to do the same! Tom Wood is a Fantasy Art Illustrator who is among the best-selling poster artists in the US and Canada. The “Tom Wood Fantasy Art” brand has sold millions of products since 2005. He is also the Owner and Art Director of Meridian Design Works, which creates artwork for well-know properties such as the NFL, Disney, and Warner Bros. Tom credits his parents, for instilling in him the confidence and character to become the artist he is today. Growing up on a rural farm in Arkansas, Tom was self taught and from the age of five. From his first glimpse of Frazetta's “Death Dealer”, Tom's passion for creating some of the most iconic fantasy works, began. His formal education began at the University of Arkansas (Fayetteville), where he was accepted on full academic scholarship. His first professional work was in the screen-printing industry, art directing many sports designs. This early work education propelled him to an extensive freelance career that he maintains 20 years later w/his Meridian Design Works Corp. Tom Wood's creations of Dragons and Medieval, Death-defying Warriors, have become iconic images of Fantasy Culture across America, Europe and Asia. Leading Manufacturers and publishers have licensed the Tom Wood Fantasy Art property for books, posters, figurines and home décor items (more than 100 different products!) accumulating over 8 million in Retail Sales, at well known retailers in countries such as the U.K., Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand, and China. In addition, in Tom's work as a commercial artist, his clients have included well-known companies like Warner Brothers, Disney, NBA, NFL, MLS, Reebok, Gatorade and the NCAA. When Tom is not in his studio, he is spending time mentoring young artists, at one of his many appearances at Comic Cons across the country, or running the backroads of his farm with his wife, Kim and daughter, Emily. He lives in Mammoth Spring, Arkansas. https://tomwoodfantasyart.com/

Episode #169. Welcome back to a very special episode of Better Than Fiction! On April 30th during Planet Comic Con in Kansas City, DLNelson and Scott Sackett had the pleasure of interviewing Sara Frazetta of the Frazetta Girls (granddaughter of legend Frank Frazetta) and award-winning author-historian J. David Spurlock of Vanguard Productions, official publisher of Frank Frazetta. Our interview covers a variety of subjects about not only Frank Frazetta's work but also the Frazetta Girls mission to keep his memory alive through his art. J. David Spurlock includes some classic Frank Frazetta stories and talks about his publishing relationship with the Frazetta family. We thank both Sara and David for taking time out of their very busy con schedule to make time for this interview.
Aaron Kai is an outstanding fine artist and film poster designer who specializes in hyper-realistic paintings in oils and acrylics. The celebrity collectors of his artwork include Clint Eastwood, Ridley Scott, Harrison Ford, Sean Young, and the RZA from Wu-Tang Clan. Aaron is also an expert on pinball (The Who's Tommy), album cover artwork (Frank Frazetta for Molly Hatchet), and movie art (The Thing)—what's more, his rock & roll nightmare involves The Eagles. Lastly, Staci reads from the Rock & Roll Nightmares: True Stories edition, about the terrible car crash in which a drunken Vince Neil killed an up-and-coming rock star.

Come with us listeners, back to the mist-shrouded 1980s, when hair was big and the Walkman was king, and sword and sorcery films were abundant. Why were there so many sword and sorcery films in that decade? Perhaps it was the lucky convergence of a number of things: the rise in popularity of Dungeons and Dragons, the prevalence of fantasy art such as the Hildebrandt Brothers, Boris Vallejo, and of course, Frazetta, the Marvel Conan comics, and other factors. While there were a number of terrible movies produced in the genre during this period, there were also some excellent or at least entertaining ones. Your crew will be discussing six of their favorites.Excalibur (1981) is a John Boorman film, and it looks absolutely beautiful. A retelling of the Arthurian legend, it has a dreamlike feeling, in an England that is moving from a magical realm to one ruled by Christianity. Highlights include Nichol Williamson as a very otherworldly Merlin, and a fantastic soundtrack that features classical music including Wagner. It is well worth seeing if you haven't!Highlander (1986) is something that started as a good idea, but suffered in the execution. Immortals scattered across the globe must battle until there is only one left -"There can be only one." When an immortal kills another immortal they gain the energies of that person and all the people they have killed. It had nice production design and an interesting cast that included Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery, and Clancy Brown, but the story is lacking in parts. Still, it has its high points.Krull (1983) is an odd mix of science fiction and fantasy, with a Prince on a quest to save a Princess from an invading alien known as The Beast. He gathers a rag tag band of thugs, sorcerers and even a cyclops to help him on his rescue mission. He also acquires a magical weapon called the Glaive, which is essentially a large throwing star that always returns to his hand. Clearly influenced by Star Wars as well as fantasy films, Krull is definitely cheesy, but fun.Dragonslayer (1981) has what is still one of the best-looking dragons in all of cinema history, Vermithrax Pejorative. The film follows a young sorcerer's apprentice who tries to rid a village of a terrible dragon. This was a Disney production and featured work by ILM and Phil Tippett. The dragon was animated with Tippett's Go Motions process, and full-size pieces were also used (and a World War II flamethrower was used for the dragon's breath!). This is a cool and unique film well worth seeing.Conan the Barbarian (1982) is probably the premiere sword and sorcery film of the 80s. Nothing quite says sword and sorcery like Conan. Directed by John Milius and with a story from Oliver Stone, this film has a very hard, almost nihilistic edge. Conan sees his parents and village slaughtered in front of him as a child, is chained to the "wheel of pain" from adolescence into young adulthood, forced to become a gladiator, and freed to find his own way, in which he seeks revenge. It's hard to imagine anyone other than Arnold Schwarzenegger playing the Cimmerian. He was perfect for the role. The film also has terrific production values. It just looks like a fully realized world. The battles are exciting and most of the time it actually is Arnold in those scenes -they couldn't find a stunt man to double for him! If you haven't seen it, or it's been a while, check this out.Conan the Destroyer (1984) was the follow up to the first film and unlike the first film, this one was PG. It's obvious they wanted to reach a younger audience, but Conan loses some grit because of this. The production design also suffers some in this film. Still, there's much to enjoy, as this is a more straight-forward adventure where Conan builds a band of adventurers to obtain a magical item for a queen who offers to bring back his lost love, Valeria. Go into this one with reduced expectations and you'll probably get a kick out of it.We know there are many other sword and sorcery films from the 80s and we have certainly left out one of your favorites. Feel free to let us know what movie you would include on your list of favorites. For our Sensor Sweep, we have a completely unrelated item that Engineer Bob is excited about: the Godzilla pinball machine! Stern Pinball has partnered with Toho International to produce a line of Godzilla pinball machines. Godzilla and his kaiju allies fight off invading monsters like Ghidorah, Gigan, and Megalon. Players can also interact with the machine using a QR code reader. There will be three versions -pro, premium, and limited edition - and they will range from $6,899 to $10,499. This go 'round we review the Bakshi/Frezetta joint Fire and Ice from 1983. For its time, a solid outing by the sorta like 'em/hate 'em Bakshi (Cool World anyone?). Crutching heavily on Frazetta's muscular fantasy exotica, the look of the film and its rotoscoping bring to life the static comic book "je ne sais quoi." Matt laments the luke warm relationship with adult themes and animation while bemoaning the silly look of today's live-action comic book fair. We both take a nostalgic journey into the sci-fi book cover art of yor, discussing our favs. While not to be left out, the mall standard Thomas Kincaid (painter of light) is given his due credit for his pre-historic matte work on F&I. Sadly, his fantasy contributions never usurped his twee cottage themes beloved by grandmothers in middle-America.Download: 295 Fire and Ice

Ray Finkle here reporting on Day 67 of the HWIDG shutdown. Tab still refuses to budge on his wall issue. As you know, he is demanding a wall between the hosts. He still claims it will keep the "bad dudes" away from his "handles". In the other side of the debate is Tim, who is a proponent for the freedom of handlebreakers everywhere. He insists a wall would be useless, and that handlebreakers would find a way through even if the wall was established. But what about the people on the sidelines? Like HWIDG worker Todd. As much as I love artists like Rauschenberg, deKooning and even Boucher, the first artist I knew by name was Frank Frazetta. He painted worlds I had never seen before, filled with warriors being pulled by a team of polar bears, red eyed demons on horseback and beautiful scantily clad maidens. I poured over his books, meticulously copying my favorite characters. While it was great drawing practice, I wasn't doing anything original. I had sketchbooks filled with Frazetta drawings, but not one that was a Saddoris.Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Pocket Casts | Overcast | RSSI'm loving the work of Canadian illustrator Terry Edward Elkins. Conan (Lancer Books, 1967) by Robert E. Howard, L. Sprague de Camp, and Lin Carter was part of first comprehensive paperback edition of the Conan saga. Conan was the fifth volume published, although it is first in the internal chronology--later printings of the series numbered the books in chronological order. When Lancer when out of business in 1973, Ace Books picked up and completed the series, keeping it in print until the mid 1990s. In a now controversial move, series editors de Camp and Carter filled in gaps in Conan’s timeline by expanding Howard’s unpublished notes and fragments, re-writing non-Conan stories, and writing entirely new stories, thus jump-starting the Conan pastiche era. For the purist, the Howard-only stories in this collection are “The Hyborian Age, Part 1” (1936), “The Tower of the Elephant” (1933), “The God in the Bowl” (1952, Howard’s original version first published 1975), and “Rogues in the House” (1934). Regardless of the editorial controversies, the Lancer/Ace series was the only widely available source of Howard-penned Conan stories for nearly three decades, sustaining the sword and sorcery boom from the late ‘60s to the mid ‘90s. Robert E. Howard’s furious prose and the now-iconic Frank Frazetta cover illustrations on many of the volumes have cemented Conan the Cimmerian in popular culture. Frazetta had clearly read and internalized the dynamism of the Conan stories, as shown by his cover painting of Conan’s epic struggle with Thak the apeman from “Rogues in the House”. As Dungeons & Dragons was created in the era of peak Conan, it is natural that Conan’s presence would be felt, starting with a write-up in Robert Kuntz and James M. Ward’s OD&D supplement Gods, Demi-Gods & Heroes (1976). Gary Gygax himself would write up Conan as he appeared in various stages of his career in Dragon magazine issue 36 (1980)--a treatment that presaged the eventual AD&D Barbarian class in Dragon issue 62 (1982) and Unearthed Arcana (1985). Conan the Cimmerian has since remained a perennial roleplaying game property, both with TSR and other publishers, but that’s a story for another day….
The New Teen Titans gear up for their final (for now) confrontation with that deer headed demonic despot, Trigon. The teens politely avoid looking at Raven's mom's butt, we meet a Giant space Marmaduke, and the word "Bozo" makes a triumphant return. All this, plus way more digressions than usual. And that's really saying something. Oh, and in case you were planning on writing us about it, we are now aware that both Vallejo and Frazetta did Molly Hatchet album covers and that Cycle 12 was indeed a reference to a brand of dog food. Thanks!
