Recorded on 15 August 2024 for ICMDA Webinars. Dr Felicia Wong chairs a webinar with Dr Päivi Räsänen Finland has a good reputation regarding free speech internationally and long, historical roots in the Christian confession. It is paradoxical that in this country Päivi has been criminally charged for voicing her deeply held beliefs about marriage and gender that are based on classical Christianity. This means that the same is possible in any country. The legal process against Päivi started in 2019. She has been in court twice. The Helsinki District Court and last year the Appellate Court issued unanimous acquittals, but the Prosecutor General appealed that decision to the Supreme Court. She is ready to defend freedom of speech and faith, including the European court of Human rights if necessary. Päivi Räsänen is a medical doctor and has been a Member of the Finnish Parliament for 29 years. From 2004 to 2015, she was the chairwoman of the Finnish Christian Democrats. From June 2011 to May 2015, she was the Minister of the Interior of Finland. She lives in Riihimäki with her husband. They have 5 children and 12 grandchildren. She has written several books from a Christian perspective, for example on marriage, abortion and euthanasia. During this term, Päivi is a member of the Social Affairs and Health Committee and a deputy member of the Foreign Affairs Committee. To listen live to future ICMDA webinars visit https://icmda.net/resources/webinars/

Today we're joined by Päivi Räsänen, a member of Finnish Parliament, who is currently on trial in Finland for posting a Bible verse on X after a local church chose to support a "pride" event. Päivi was originally prosecuted for the crime of “agitation against a minority group”, under the section of “war crimes and crimes against humanity” in the Finnish criminal code, and was acquitted twice. Yet the prosecution continues to appeal the not guilty verdict, and Päivi finds herself yet again back in court. The prosecution claims that Päivi's real crime wasn't posting the Bible verse, but claiming that the Bible condemns homosexuality in that post. We're also joined by Kristen Waggoner, CEO of Alliance Defending Freedom, to discuss the legal specifics of this case and the greater implications of punishing free speech. The lawsuit against a member of the Finnish Parliament accused of violating a law prohibiting “War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity,” has been dismissed. Päivi Räsänen's crime was quoting Bible verses in support of traditional understandings of human nature and sexuality.   According to a state prosecutor, the problem wasn't citing the Bible, but “Räsänen's interpretation and opinion about the Bible verses that (were) criminal.” In other words, what Christians have always believed ...   In an Alliance Defending Freedom International press release, Räsänen said:  "It isn't a crime to tweet a Bible verse, or to engage in public discourse with a Christian perspective. The attempts made to prosecute me for expressing my beliefs have resulted in an immensely trying four years, but my hope is that the result will stand as a key precedent to protect the human right to free speech. I sincerely hope other innocent people will be spared the same ordeal for simply voicing their convictions."

Registration is free, but you must sign up at breakpoint.org/forum. __________ Päivi Räsänen, a member of the Finnish Parliament, is currently on trial, charged with hate crimes against a minority group. To be specific, Räsänen is being accused of violating a Finnish law that prohibits “War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity.” According to state prosecutors, Räsänen committed the crime by quoting the Bible in support of traditional understandings of human nature and sexuality.    While prosecutors claim that they're not attempting to restrict religion per se, only certain public expressions, they are attempting to decide what can and cannot be said and done in the name of religion. In fact, the prosecution openly admitted that “[t]he point” of their case “isn't whether [what Räsänen said] is true or not but that it is insulting” (emphasis added).  This important case will carry dangerous precedent for just how free the Free World remains. Christians and others concerned with liberty of conscience should support Räsänen and ADF International as they champion the first freedom in what is ostensibly a Christian nation. While everyone in Finland “technically” enjoys full religious freedom, it is only in the sense that no one is required to be a part of the state church. Both the dominant Lutheranism and the minority Eastern Orthodoxy there are privileged and receive tax funds from their members. However, this official faith has not kept Finns from drifting further into atheism and relativism, nor has it prevented the open hostility to religion evidenced in this egregious court case. As Dr. Andrew Walker tweeted about the trial, “The Christian Nationalist regime of Finland is currently persecuting and prosecuting a Christian Member of Parliament for daring to quote the Bible.”    Such is the problem when Christian is “in-name-only,” whether nations or individuals. Being “officially” Christian, in other words, isn't the same as actually being one. And this goes for “nationalism,” too.   We may appreciate a royal event that showcases the beauty of a deeply Christian liturgy to rest of the world and consider that a type of Christian nationalism, but other types are far more unsettling. For example, a Russian Orthodox priest recently blessed an image of notorious dictator and persecutor Joseph Stalin, saying that Christians should be grateful that Stalin “created” so many martyrs.   Whether we're talking about the Finns, the English, the Russians, or the Americans, the claim to be a Christian nation does not a Christian nation make. Even more important is defining the idea and determining if the idea of a Christian nation is even biblical, and in what sense. More than a few European nations remain Christian on paper, with laws that enshrine the Christian faith in a privileged position. However, many of these nations are among the most secular in the world, with church attendance falling consistently for the past few decades. At the same time, those voices that praise the demise of “Christendom” will soon realize just what the cultural rejection of Christianity entails.  The relationship between Church and state and culture is and has always been contentious. The recent cultural debate about the term “Christian nationalism” is confusing because participants in the debate tend to use mutually exclusive definitions of the term. For some, it's idolatry and a confusion of Gospel mission. For others, it's faithfulness– and the only thing remaining to prevent our children's co-option into an increasingly immoral culture. There are many questions that must be answered, for example:  With the culture and state so hostile to the Church, isn't it time to stand up for ourselves? Will nations exist in heaven? If God made the nations, then why have some disappeared? Even if Christian nationalism has its issues, is it the lesser of two evils? Why do critics of Christian nationalism only complain about partisanship when it's conservatives getting political? Is there a way we can be faithful in the public square without getting labeled “Christian nationalist”? Is longing for our nation to become more Christian the same as being a Christian nationalist? Weren't all Christians Christian nationalists until the American Revolution?  On September 26, the Colson Center is launching Breakpoint Forums, digital discussions about topics that matter. The first Breakpoint Forum will deal with this contentious idea of Christian nationalism. Joining me for this online discussion will be R.R. We delve into what social innovation is, and what role public policy and specific funding instruments play for the growth of the sector. Gorgi is an assistant professor of sustainability at ESCP Paris. He has conducted a study comparing and assessing approaches from 10 different countries to support social innovation. Dominik works for LMU's Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center. He has previously worked for a foundation and a family office and set-up his own social business. They discuss the rationale for factoring in the long-term benefits for society when investing into innovative solutions to societal problems, whether you are a policy maker or an investor. We also address jargon and how to bridge cultural differences between the private sector, the public sector, and civil society to jointly promote social innovation. Links Gorgi conducted the study “Financing Social Innovation” on behalf of SEND, the German Social Entrepreneurship Network. Examples mentioned by Gorgi and Dominik: Portugal Social Innovation is a government initiative aimed at stimulating the social investment market in Portugal. It mobilizes around EUR 150 million from the European Social Fund through 4 financing instruments: capacity building for social investment, partnerships for impact, social impact bonds, and the social innovation fund. Power Up Scotland develops early stage social businesses through investment, business support and cross-sector partnerships. It has been launched by Big Issue Invest in partnership with the Scottish Government and the University of Edinburgh. The Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra received an endowment capital fund of approximately 84 million euros from the Bank of Finland and the Finnish Parliament. Finland's government declared a “new era” is underway as it inches closer to seeking NATO membership, hours before Sweden's governing party on Sunday backed a plan to join the trans-Atlantic alliance amid Russia's war in Ukraine.Russia has long bristled about NATO moving closer to its borders, so the developments will be sure to further anger Moscow. President Vladimir Putin has already warned his Finnish counterpart on Saturday that relations would be “negatively affected.”NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Sunday the process for Finland and Sweden to join could be very quick. He also didn't expect Turkey to hold up the process.Speaking after top diplomats from the alliance's 30 member states met in Berlin, Stoltenberg also expressed his hope that Ukraine could win the war as Russian military advances appear to be faltering. In Finland, President Sauli Niinisto and Prime Minister Sanna Marin confirmed earlier statements that their country would seek membership in NATO during a joint news conference at the Presidential Palace in Helsinki. The Nordic country, which was nonaligned before changing its stance on NATO, shares a long border with Russia.“This is a historic day. A new era begins,” Niinisto said. The Finnish Parliament is expected to endorse the decision in the coming days. A formal membership application will then be submitted to NATO headquarters in Brussels, most likely at some point next week.Sweden, also nonaligned, moved a step closer to applying for NATO membership after the governing Social Democratic party met Sunday and backed joining the trans-Atlantic alliance. The plan to join the alliance will be discussed in Sweden's parliament on Monday, and Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson's Cabinet will make an announcement later that day.The decision by the Social Democrats breaks with the party's long-standing position that Sweden must remain nonaligned and means there's a clear majority for NATO membership in Parliament.Sweden has not been a member of a military alliance since the Napoleonic Wars. Finland adopted neutrality after being defeated by the Red Army in World War II and losing about 10% of its territory.“Our 200-year-long standing policy of military nonalignment has served Sweden well,” Andersson said during a news conference in Stockholm late Sunday. “But the issue at hand is whether military nonalignment will keep serving us well?”“We're now facing a fundamentally changed security environment in Europe.”Finland and Sweden abandoned traditional neutrality by joining the European Union in 1995.Public opinion in both countries was firmly against joining NATO until the Russian invasion on Ukraine on Feb. 24, when support for membership surged almost overnight, first in Finland and later in Sweden.NATO's secretary-general, meanwhile, sought to highlight Russian military setbacks.“Russia's war in Ukraine is not going as Moscow had planned,” Stoltenberg said by video link to the NATO meeting in Berlin as he recovers from a COVID-19 infection." “They failed to take Kyiv. They are pulling back from around Kharkiv. Their major offensive in Donbas has stalled. Russia is not achieving its strategic objectives.”“Ukraine can win this war," he said, adding that NATO must continue to step up its military support to the country. The ex-Soviet republic of Georgia's bid to join NATO is again being discussed despite dire warnings from Moscow about the consequences. Both countries fought a brief war in 2008 over Georgia's breakaway region of South Ossetia.Nordic NATO member Norway said it strongly welcomed Finland's decision to seek membership. Norwegian Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt described Helsinki's move as “a turning point” for the Nordic region's defense and security policies.Stoltenberg said he was confident the accession process for Finland and Sweden could be expedited. In the meantime, the alliance would increase its presence in the Baltic region to deter Russian threats,...

This week, closing arguments are scheduled in Finland at the trial of a Paivi Rasanen, a member of parliament, that may be a test case for whether quoting the Bible could be considered hate speech deserving of a crime. It all started in 2019 when Rasanen tweeted to her Lutheran minister questioning the church's support of the Gay Pride parade, quoting verses from the Bible as her reasoning. The exchange ignited a national debate where all of Rasanen's writings, including a 2004 pamphlet, became the focus behind five criminal complaints. She was eventually taken into custody where police questioned her for thirteen hours. Later she was charged with hate crimes against a minority. The real issue though has become, "How far can religious freedoms be protected?" And, "Whether or not people can be charged with a crime for what they believe?" On this episode of Lighthouse Faith podcast, Rasanen talks about her ordeal, her faith. This podcast is not a debate about what the Bible says or does not say about homosexuality. There's another podcast that debates that, between two evangelical ministers. Does sexual purity still matter in today's culture? We answer that and more on today's episode of Unapologetic where we defend truth without comprise with Dr Bobby Conway the One Minute Apologist, and Tim Hull. A Christian member of the Finnish Parliament is facing six years imprisonment for sharing her opinion on marriage and human sexuality on social media, on television, and in a pamphlet. The politician, who is a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland and former chair of the Christian Democrats, has been under police investigation since June 2019 for publicly voicing her opinion on marriage and human sexuality in a 2004 pamphlet, for comments made on a 2018 TV show, and a tweet directed at her church leadership. This is one of many issues. Others include Josh Duggar is being charged with possession of Child Porn, the United Methodist church installs a self-proclaimed drag queen as a pastor, and Hillsong Creative director resigns after an inappropriate photo was discovered. Louis Avallone and Stephen Parr discuss the conflict between the Democrats determination to control ALL Americans, forcing everyone to get the COVID-19 Vaccine an the Republicans who are determined to exercise their US Constitutional Right of Free Will to NOT take the shots. The Democrats are ignoring the data indicting those who are most likely to die are over 65, and most of that group probably will get the vaccine. The science also indicated that those who work outside in the sunlight are far let likely to get ill because of the benefits of Vitamin D from the sun.“Group Think” was first introduced as a problem in 1971 by “Psychology Today”. Because it puts substantial social pressure on conforming to what others are thinking or saying, rather than observing and reaching one’s own opinions from often obvious evidence, "Group Think" is very dangerous in a FREE SOCIETY! Louis Avallone and Stephen Parr are committed to helping you avoid the “Group Think Trap" here on American Ground Radio. Our American Mamas, Teri Netterville and Denise Arthur, have very high regard for those who voluntarily risk their lives every day to protect and to otherwise serve us. They have no tolerance for those who are teaching certain groups of people to engage in disrespectful, hateful, or dangerous behavior towards our police. It needs to stop. Someday, everyone of us may need to dial 911, and we will need someone to answer the phone!Obviously, they are friends, going back about 30 years; but does US House Republican Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy have a conflict of interest problem because of his friendship with Pollster Frank Luntz, who has represented a number of very liberal corporations? McCarthy said he rented a room from Luntz because of Pelosi’s COVID-19 Capitol Building use restrictions. Until then, he slept on his Capitol Office couch.Cancel Culture is pushing to destroy too much, including the Judeo-Christian religious faith. In the USA, the 1st Amendment is supposed to protect those rights to speak and worship as we wish. In the European Union, they are recognized as National Rights under the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. This includes Finland. However, Päivi Räsänen, a former Minister of the Finnish Interior and a current member of the Finnish Parliament, is facing up to 6 years in prison for Biblical writings in her criticism of homosexuality. This bully culture is becoming too common both in the European Union and in the USA. Päivi Räsänen is quoted as saying, “I will not be intimidated into hiding my faith. The more Christians keep silent on controversial themes, the narrower the space for freedom of speech gets.”What a mess! Did we really need this “Biden Chaos”? The Democrats, using Biden’s pen, are working very rapidly to make “America Normal Again”, and they are creating disaster and chaos in the process! Illegal southern border crossings are up 700%, and Press Secretary Jen Psaki says Biden is taking on the challenge at the southern border. How?The voters and parent in the Carroll ISD (Southlake, Texas) fought back against “Critical Race Theory” being put into their school system. It worked! A group called Southlake Families PAC came together, interviewed all the candidates for the local school board and city election positions on the ballot, made one recommendation for each, …. AND THEY WON, with about 70% of the vote in each race! The Democrats had worked hard to “brand” all five candidates endorsed by Southlake Families PAC as “racist”. Clearly, it did not work!
