In this episode of Talkin' Schmitt, we welcome the old homie from up North, Mr. Willis Kimbel. Willis checks in from his new skateshop in Portland, Oregon Rip's Co which was inspired by Bad Co. He shares his journey in skateboarding, the establishment of his skate shop, and the influence of his family and skate culture on his life. Family support played a crucial role in Willis's skateboarding journey. Listen as we deep dive in the wayback maching where a young Willis experiences the early stokes of skateboarding at the Encinitas YMCA. Willis ponders the question of the potential revival of the iconic Thrasher Magazine skateboarding show 'King of the Road', and the importance of good company during travels One thing seems to be clear, the boys can chat it up and have plenty of history and stories together. Im guessing this is only part one of many more Willis episodes to come. What the Riff?!?
1979 - June: Journey “Evolution”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 11, 2024 36:17

We've already covered a couple of Journey albums.  Episode 250 profiled "Infinity," the introduction of Steve Perry to the group.  And episode 26 delved into arguably the high water mark for Journey, the album "Escape."  Here we take a look at the band as they are in their transition into one of the world's biggest rock bands. The appropriately-titled album Evolution is Journey's fifth studio album.  Here we find Steve Perry settling in as front man while still sharing lead vocal duties with keybaordist Gregg Rolie.  They have also replaced drummer Aynsley Dunbar with Steve Smith, previously with Ronnie Montrose's band.  The band is continuing to explore a more radio-friendly sound.  The lineup for this band includes Perry, Rolie, and Dunbar, along with Neil Schon on guitar, and Ross Valory on bass.At the time, "Evolution" was the band's most successful album, and it reached number 20 on the Billboard 200 chart.  It also featured their first single to enter the top 20.  The album was actually released in March of 1979, but was recorded in the fall of 1978.  We're featuring it in January of 1979 because - well - that's where we were able to fit it in.Brian rejoins us in todays podcast to sub for an absent Wayne, and to profile this album. Too LateA deeper cut written by Perry and Schon, this song was written about a friend from Steve Perry's hometown who was wrestling with addiction to drugs.  It was a plea to get out of town and the surroundings that fed his addiction before it was too late to break the chains of addiction.Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'The biggest hit from the album is a slow rocker with a shuffle beat.  It hit number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 in November of 1979, the group's first foray into the top 20.  The song is based on a true story about a cheating woman who finds out that turnabout is fair play - and that cheating on a songwriter can result in your being memorialized in a song.City of the AngelsWhile they were known as a San Francisco band, this album track pays homage to Los Angeles.  It was written by Perry, Schon and Rolie.  On the album, "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'" immediately leads into this track, and you will occasionally hear these played together on album-oriented stations and satellite radio.Just the Same WayThis single finds Gregg Rolie taking turns with Perry on lead vocals.  It was written by Rolie, Schon, and Ross Valory, making it the only song on the album not written or co-written by Steve Perry.  It is an infatuation song, with a great call-and-answer in the chorus between Rolie and Perry. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The Pink Panther Theme by Henry ManciniThe Saturday morning cartoon show with a silent protagonist, "The Pink Panther," ended its run after 10 years. STAFF PICKS:Gold by John StewartLynch's staff pick is a top 5 hit from John Stewart's album "Bombs Away Dream Babies," his first solo top 40 hit.  Both Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks contributed to the album, and Nicks provides backing vocals on this song.  The vocals describe the dark, cynical side of the recording industry.Planet Claire by The B-52'sRob brings us a musical interpretation of a B-rated sci-fi movie.  Once the instrumental and sound-effects - with a Peter Gunn-inspired beat - give way to Fred Schneider's vocals, we find that the girl is from Planet Claire, drives a Plymouth Satellite, and "some say she's from Mars, or one of the seven stars that shine after 3:30 in the morning.  Well, she isn't!"Dance the Night Away by Van Halen Bruce features the first US top 20 hit by Van Halen.  This song is unusual because it is the only song on the "Van Halen II" album that originated in the studio rather than as a song the group had honed on tour for a long time.  It also downplays Eddie Van Halen's guitar virtuosity and brings up the vocal harmonies.  Fleetwood Mac's "Go Your Own Way" was an inspiration for this single.Rock n Roll Fantasy by Bad CompanyBrian's staff pick was written by Bad Co. front man Paul Rogers, and reflects the truth that Rock music is escapism, a fantasy to take you away from the stress of the everyday world for a bit.  It was the lead single from the album "Desolation Angels."  While not their highest charting single, it is their best selling single. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Main Theme from the motion picture "Alien"The disturbing soundtrack was one element of what made this sci-fi horror film so creepy. Molly Godfrey ,is a mom, business owner, and wife. In this video, I'm going to talk about how she balances it all. I know that many of you are also juggling multiple roles, so we wanted to share some of the tips that have helped her. First, it's important to set priorities. What are the most important things to you? Once you know your priorities, you can start to make decisions about how to allocate your time. Another important thing is to delegate. Don't be afraid to ask for help from your spouse, family, or friends. They can help you with things like childcare, cooking, or cleaning. Finally, it's important to take care of yourself. Make sure you're getting enough sleep, eating healthy foods, and exercising. When you're taking care of yourself, you're better able to take care of others. I know that balancing multiple roles can be challenging, but it's definitely possible. If you're feeling overwhelmed, just remember that you're not alone. There are many other women out there who are doing it too. In this video, Molly Godfrey will share some specific tips that have worked for her, as well as some of the challenges she has faced. I hope you'll find it helpful! What the Riff?!?
1976 - March: Bad Company “Run with the Pack”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 1, 2020 38:34

English supergroup Bad Company continued their successful streak with their third studio album, Run with the Pack.  Frontman/guitarist/panist Paul Rodgers and drummer Simon Kirke came out of the band Free, guitarist/keyboardist Mick Ralph came out of Mott the Hoople, and bassist Boz Burrell was originally with King Crimson.  Paul Rodgers' voice is quite distinctive, and you can tell a “Bad Co.” song just from that voice. The name of the group came from a book of Victorian morals.  It showed a picture depicting a child looking up at a ruffian leaning against a lamp post.  The caption under the picture read, “Beware of bad company.”  The band would continue until 1982 when Paul Rodgers disbanded the group and left to join another supergroup, The Firm.  Bad Co. would reform in 1986 with new personnel, including new frontman Brian Howe (formerly vocalist for Ted Nugent).  Rodgers would return to the band in 1998 and Bad Co. would tour off and on until today.Let's see what happens when we spend some time in Bad Company, shall we? Live for the MusicMick Ralphs wrote this track that leads off the album, and was released as a single, though it would be considered a deeper cut. “Live for the music you know you're gonna find a lot to ease my mind.”Run with the PackThe album takes its name from this song written by Paul Rodgers, which finishes off side 1.  It was also released as a single, and may be familiar to some, especially the introductory piano riff.  Rodgers was a primary songwriter for the group.  It finishes off with a long outro with a symphonic sound that may remind you of the Moody Blues.Silver, Blue & GoldAlthough this track may be the best known song on the album, it actually was not released as a single at the time.  It is a breakup song, but with a beautiful melody and an ultimately positive outlook.  “My rainbow is overdue.”  Paul Rodgers wrote this one, which leads off side 2.Young BloodThis cover of The Coasters classic song hit the top 20.  It tells the tragic tale of a boy who meets a girl, then meets her father, who causes her to lose the girl.  “You'd better leave my daughter alone!” ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The theme from the television series “The Bionic Woman” After a tragic parachute accident, tennis pro Jamie Sommers becomes The Bionic Woman following in the footsteps of her former boyfriend, Steve Austin STAFF PICKS:“Money Honey” by The Bay City RollersWayne's staff pick features an early boy band from Scotland with their follow-up to "Saturday Night."  They got their name by throwing a dart at a map of the United States, and taking the name from Bay City, Michigan.  The dart landed on Arkansas first, but ...they felt that it wouldn’t work out with Kansas already in full swing!  “Love Is the Drug” by Roxy MusicRob brings us the lead single from Roxy Music's album Siren.  Bryan Ferry lends vocals to this song written by Andy Mackay.  The album cover features Jerry Hall as a blue mermaid (siren). “I say go, she say yes, dim the lights, you can guess the rest.”“Something for Nothing” by RushBruce's staff pick comes off Rush's concept album 2112.  It has a libertarian message, based off graffiti that Neil Peart spotted in Los Angeles that read "Freedom isn't for free."“Fooled Around and Fell in Love” by Elvin BishopBrian rolls around to a soft rock hit from guitarist Elvin Bishop, featuring Mickey Thomas on vocals.  The song tells the story of a guy who wants to play the field, and accidentally falls in love.  Thomas would go on to join Jefferson Starship and have several hits as front man for that group. COMEDY TRACK:"Junk Food Junkie" by Larry GroceThe struggle is real, folks!  "But at night I'm a junk food junkie.  Good Lord, have pity on me!"

How Do I Fire My Podcast's Co-host?

Podcasting with Aaron

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 15, 2016 18:57

This question came from a listener named Brandon. He asked, “What is the best way to ask a friend to leave a podcast and still remain friends?” This is a great question, although a really hard one. What should you do when your co-host just isn't working out? How should you handle it? Key Takeaways: Have a conversation with your co-host, don’t discuss the problems or fire them through text or email. If you’re at the point of wanting to kick someone off your podcast, it means you’ve already made the mistake of not setting clear expectations up front. Work to help your co-host improve; don’t kick them out the door before you’ve exhausted every option. No one is perfect. No one gets everything right the first time. Be willing to work with your co-host to help them improve their weak points. First: Why do you want to fire your co-host? What are the reasons? You need to identify the issues and write them down. Make sure you fully understand what your frustrations are and what you’d like them to do differently. Talk it over with a few trusted friends. Make sure that you’re thinking straight and that your arguments make sense. When you’re ready to discuss the problems with your co-host, have an informal chat instead of just sending them the list of things they’re doing wrong. Have a conversation with your co-host, don’t discuss the problems or fire them through text or email. When you do have the conversation, start by talking about your goals for the show. Are they still aligned? Does your friend or co-host remember the reason they wanted to do the podcast in the first place? Set Expectations In the Very Beginning Setting expectations before you start is key. Have conversations about everything; length of shows, the focus of podcast, goals, expectations, sponsors, audience interaction, brand, commitment, consistency, and so on. Have in-depth conversations about all these things before you start to make sure you and your co-host are on the same page. If you’re at the point of wanting to kick someone off your podcast, it means you’ve already made the mistake of not setting clear expectations up front. Get all of these things in writing. That way, you have a document (even if it’s just an email) that you can refer back to later if there are any questions about expectations that were set and agreed to in the beginning. Who Runs This Podcast? Who’s the Boss? Podcasts rarely have truly equal partners. Someone usually holds more power or authority. If you are in a situation where you are trying to be equal partners, maybe you should consider talking about who should have that 51% power (either you or your co-host). If you aren’t sure who is in charge, think about who is taking the lead. Who handles the admin work? Who runs the website? Who’s in charge? If it’s you, then you can fire your co-host or ask them to leave. If it’s not you, then you might be put in a position where you’ll have to leave the podcast. Maybe Try to Fix the Problems First? Approach your co-host with respect and an open mind. Highlight the good things they bring to the show. Talk about the ways that they are contributing, then talk about what you’d like them to do differently. Discuss the problems with them and give them a chance to change. Work to help your co-host improve; don’t kick them out the door before you’ve exhausted every option. Remember, this probably isn’t going to be a pleasant experience for your co-host. No one likes being told they are doing something wrong or being a disappointment in some way. What are the Qualities of a Bad Co-host? So what are some bad qualities to have as a podcast co-host? Here are a few examples: Their views and values are different than the stated values of the show They’re rude to you or audience members They’re inconsistent (they don’t show up on time for recordings) They won’t help prepare for episodes (being unprepared) They don’t really care about doing a good show, they’re un-interested in success They’re really bad at talking (tons of umms, stammers, and other bad verbal ticks) and they don't seem to care about improving They aren’t interested in providing value to the audience, they’re not focused on what the audience needs or wants What are the Qualities of a Good Co-host? The qualities of a good co-host are pretty much the opposite of the bad qualities: They helps with the workload They show up on time They are excited about the show, they promote the show They invest time preparing for episodes They stay true to the intended purpose of the podcast; they don’t get off track or discuss things the audience wouldn’t be interested in Your Audience Will Notice How You Handle Firing a Co-host You might think when it comes to firing your co-host that it’s not a big deal, but your actions are going to impact your audience too, and how they perceive you. Your audience will notice the change and the way you handle the situation. I mentioned at the beginning of the show that I left a podcast once. I was the original co-host of the seanwes podcast, but I stepped down after 21 episodes. Sean McCabe recorded episode 22 after we had the discussion about my role in the seanwes podcast which led to me deciding to leave the show. I re-listened to that episode this morning and it still stands as a fantastic example of how to explain to your audience that a co-host is leaving the show. In episode 22, Sean revisited the original stated purpose of the show, and explains how I was consistently taking the show off track by conflating all the topics to my career in music, rather than staying focused on the stated purpose of the show, which was business as it relates to design. I have to give Sean props for the way he handled the situation. He got me to agree that my goals weren’t aligned with the goals of the show, and that even though there was nothing wrong with my goals, I wasn’t going to be a good fit for the show moving forward unless I was willing to put aside my needs to better serve the audience’s needs. I wasn’t, so I agreed that it would be better for me to step down. In a way, he was able to get me to talk myself into leaving, which worked out best for everyone. To this day, I still have a lot of respect for Sean and how he approached that situation. He didn’t come to me and say, “Hey, some of the listeners are complaining, and you suck at podcasting”. He said, “Would you be willing to make this change in order to better serve the needs of our audience?” He handled the situation with kindness and grace, and we remain great friends to this day even though I chose to leave the show. Focus on Making the Show Better If you’re thinking about asking your co-host to leave, I urge you to keep the focus on doing whatever it takes to make the show better. Be brave enough to present the problem to your co-host and ask them if they’re willing to work on it. Be patient enough to help them and work with them to make the podcast better for both of you as well as the audience. No one is perfect. No one gets everything right the first time. Be willing to work with your co-host to help them improve their weak points. Q&A: Anonymous asks: What if your co-host is your wife? Ahah, I see what you did there. It comes back to why. Do they seem disinterested? Is their heart not in it? Are they just doing it to make you happy? Does it seem like they aren’t really enjoying it anymore? If you suspect these things, you need to sit down and have a conversation. Maybe there’s something she’d rather be doing with her time. Ask her.
